Talon (Talon #1)

by Julie Kagawa (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they’re positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon’s newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember’s bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

Quote 1:

“My twin chuckled.  “I wouldn’t go that far,” he murmured, gently tugging a strand of my short red hair.  “Remember, we’re here to blend in, to study the humans and assimilate into the community.  This is just another phase of training.  Don’t forget, at the end of the summer, we start our sophomore year of high school.  But more Important, our real instructors will show up, and they’ll decide where we fit into the organization.  This is a brief respite, at most, so enjoy it while you can.”
I made a face at him.  “I intend to.”
And I did.  He had no idea how much.  I was tired of rules and isolation, of watching the world go by without me.  I was tired of Talon and their endless string of Policies, laws and restrictions.  No more of that.  The summer was mine and I had big Plans, things I wanted to do, before it ended and we’d be forced back into the system.  This summer, I was going to live.”

—-Talon by Julie Kagawa

Quote 2:

“I turned in my seat, scanning the parking lot, but I didn’t see anything unusual.  A pair of girls walking back to their Camaro, drinks in hand.  A Family with two tiddlers heading to the door.  None of them were staring at me.  But that tingle rippling across my neck hadn’t gone away.
And then, a dragon pulled up on a motorcycle.
Not in its real form, obviously.  The art of Shifting–changing into human form–was so widespread it was common dragon knowledge now.  All our kind knew how to do it.  And those that couldn’t were either taught very quickly, or they were hunted down by the Order of St. George, the terrible cult of dragonslayers whose only purpose was our destruction.  Shifting into human form was our best defense against genocidal dragon killers and a world of unsuspecting mortals; one did not just wander about in full reptile form unless one had a death wish.  So, the dragon who cruised casually to the edge of the lot appeared human, and a fine specimen of humanity, too.  He was slightly older than us, lean and tall, with a tousled mess of black hair and a leather jacket over his broad shoulders.  He didn’t kill the engine, but sat there staring at me, a smirk stretching his full lips, and even in human form, there was an air of danger about him, in his eyes that were so light a brown they were almost gold.  My blood heated at the sight of him, and a flush rose to my skin–instant reactions to another of our kind, and a stranger at that.”

—–Talon by Julie Kagawa

Quote 3:

“Clicking the send button, I closed the laptop and leaned back in the chair, thinking of the encounter this afternoon.  My mind kept drifting back to the red-haired girl, Ember.  The other two girls I’d nearly forgotten, though I knew I shouldn’t write them off so quickly.  But Ember was the one that mattered.  When She’d first looked at me on the beach, my entire body had seized up for a moment, something I’d never experienced before.  I couldn’t catch my breath; I couldn’t do anything except stare at her.  And for a split second, I’d wondered if she knew who I was, why I was there.
Fortunately, Tristan had appeared, and the fight with the college students had cleared my head, though I was still fairly annoyed with myself for losing focus.  I was a soldier.  What had happened between me and the girl, whatever that was…it was a fluke, something that wouldn’t happen again.  I knew my mission.  I was here to find and kill a dragon.  Nothing else mattered.
I had to stay focused.  I would not let myself be distracted by thoughts of a red-haired girl with bright green eyes, even though she’d surprised me today and made me laugh.  Even though I admired her fierceness in standing up for herself and her friend.
Even though, hours later, I could not seem to get her out of my head.”

“What is it like?”

“What is what like?”

“Death. What is death like?”

“He is quiet and still, and oh, so peaceful. Fear will no longer hold any sway over you, nor will worry or sadness. Can you think of a time when you were especially tired? Perhaps after a long day of travel? Do you remember how lovely it was to climb into your feather bed that night? How grateful your tired limbs were? How welcoming it felt? How delicious to close your eyes and finally rest?”

“Yes.”

“It is just like that.”

Book Excerpt:

Two sets of footsteps clipped across on the cobblestone. Before they rounded the bend to the stable door, Raven’s fingers twitched over her knife. When she saw Gorman and the younger baron, she relaxed and continued attaching her weapons.

“Can I trust you?” Baron Darius’s voice rose hesitantly as he approached.

She smiled. “I’ve saved your life once and promise to do it as many times as necessary.”

“Why?”

“It’s the reaper’s way. A life for a life.”

“How many have you killed?”

Raven clinched her jaw. “Too many.” Her gaze met the butler’s. “Will he have his own horse?”

“No. The young master’s condition makes him subject to untimely fits. He would be in danger of falling.” His ice blue eyes held a fire unmatched by his frozen features.

“Right. I expected as much.” She placed her boot in the stirrup and mounted. “Hand him to me then.

The butler lifted him to the front of her saddle. She knew it would be an uncomfortable place to ride for a long period of time, but he’d only have to make it to Gregory’s house. On a horse, it should only be about four hours if they took it slow, less than three if needed.

A horn sounded, and the butler paled. “It’s him. The duke approaches.”

“Father is early.” The boy sounded happy but tentative.

Gorman gripped the horse’s rein and turned it toward the other stable exit. “We must leave by the north gate. The duke approaches from the south. You may have as much as an hour’s head start before he commands a pursuit.”

Raven swallowed hard. “That’s not enough time.”

“Follow me.” He released the rein and jogged forward.

The horse trotted in response. Even in the jarring up and down motion of the trot, the young baron remained silent. He gripped the chestnut mare’s mane with both hands. His knuckles glowed white under the lamps. Raven pulled gently on the reins to slow the horse to a more tolerable speed but followed the butler closely.

“Guards!” Gorman reached the gates, speaking in breathless tones. “Baron Solomon orders passage for this woman and the young baron.”

Raven recognized Grant’s red band before he turned around. He narrowed his eyes at her and barked the order to open the gate. Before she could urge her horse forward, Grant gripped the bridle by the cheek piece. He called back toward the butler, “Will she need guard?”

“That will not be necessary. She is capable of caring for the young baron on his errand.”

Even in the half-light, Raven could see the guard’s jaw tighten and nostrils flare in indecision. “Baron Solomon trusts this woman?”

The butler frowned and stiffened in disapproval. Still he answered softly, “Yes, with his brother’s life.”

The Lotus Effect Review

The Lotus Effect (Rise of the Ardent #1)

by Bridget Ladd (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

An improbable partnership. An unforgettable love.

Lily Emerson, daughter of the Head of Council and Mistress of Science, has lived a privileged life. It’s Lily’s 18th nameday, the day she is to follow in her mother’s footsteps, becoming the next Mistress of Science—the most powerful woman in all of City Prosper. The Architect and designer of Prosper’s future.

During the night of her Coronation, the corruption of the Council spreads before her . . . opening her eyes to the cruelty that resides in the Council, even within her own parents. Lily realizes now the title of Mistress only comes with superficial power, that to truly save the citizens—she has to fight.

Fight in the Barrage—the mechanical gladiatorial tournament in which one chosen pair of volunteers from each Sector fights, armor-clad and as a team, utilizing unique weapon specialties: the Gatling gun, the Cestus, Klaives, Crescent Knives, mechanically engineered beasts—in the hope to win the right to change the Law. A law that has remained unchanged since its creation almost eighty years ago.

The tournament that Xander, Engineering Blacksmith and Lily’s partner, believes she has no business being in.

But Lily’s different. And she sets out to prove just that.

If you’re a fan of adventure, fighting for survival, unlikely female heroines, and romance—then grab your copy today!

Quote 1:

“Time–an empty existence.  Knowing only the bite of steel, the stretch of muscle to conceal the despair of loss, the barren hours, years, sitting alone.  Watching.  Waiting. Learning. Knowing what I know and yet cannot move forward.

These are the absolute thoughts that plague my every second.  I have been patient to my word.  Declarations of my own making.  And now that I have grown: I have proven ready.

The Council–shaded and driven by their own desire, fabrications, and hidden evil–had stripped away my only life.  My time has run out–and so too, has theirs.”

—-Xander, The Lotus Effect by Bridget Ladd

Quote 2:

“A sudden and rash idea formulated itself into the forefront of my mind.  I took a deep breath, steadying my tone.

“Your Feelings regarding my capabilities matter not,” I said evenly.  “For I, Lily Emerson, as governed by the Laws of Prosper, renounce the title of Mistress.”

A mixture of shock and dumb confusion filled the faces of all those watching me.

The locket that I had wrapped around my wrist suddenly fell into my palm.  Its smooth contours gave me courage . . . and an idea.

Nothing beneficial would come of me not accepting the title.  The council would still operate as they always had, and nothing would change for the citizens who were suffering at the hands of the unjust.

If I did nothing after tonight, I would only be looked upon as the unruly, childish girl, who revoked her responsibility.

To change the system, I needed something more.  Something brave.  Something . . . stupid.

Staring openly into the crowd, I stood as tall and proud as I could, secretly palming the locket for strength–the memory of the broken automaton driving me forward.

“I Lily Emerson, shall instead volunteer my name into the Drawing for Sector 8.  I will participate in the Barrage Tournament and, in doing so, shall wager my life to have the opportunity as victor to change the Law.”

I had said the words.  The words that were now binding.

Silence ensued.”

—-The Lotus Effect by Bridget Ladd

My Review:

4/5 Stars

Xander has suffered great hardship in his life and Lily’s hardships are just beginning.  Lily renounces her title as Mistress of Science.  She declares her intention to fight in the Barrage Tournament for her sector.  The Tournament is a mixture of old fashioned fighting and science.  When it comes time to announce her partner, she discovers that Xander has volunteered. She knows very little about him, having only met him once.  They only have one month to train and Xander is a hard task master.  He  pushes Lily to her limits.  Along the way, Xander and Lily become friends and maybe something more.  Both of them would do just about anything to keep the other one safe.  The future of their world is in their hands.  They must win the Tournament in order to change things for the better.

I really liked this book and I loved the main characters.  Xander and Lily are wonderful together.  I would have liked a little more love story between the two, but that is just my opinion.  The story and characters were well developed.  There were a few places, in the story, that dragged a little, but not enough to keep me from reading to the end.  There was plenty of action and still many unanswered questions.  The sequel, Ardent Ascension, is out now and I will definitely read it.  The author is working on the third book in this series.  It is called Soul Arbor.  The Lotus Effect is a great first book in this series.  I would recommend it to anyone who likes steampunk fiction, dystopian societies, and just plan old science fiction.  I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

About the Author(Goodreads):

Bridget Ladd never quite grew up. She’s most likely to be caught carrying a pocketful of souvenir rocks and shells (to the washer’s dismay) and gets excited over trivial things like colorful ponies and raiding tombs alongside her longtime favorite video game pal, Lara Croft. The smell of freshly turned dirt and the sea air are her favorites, and she isn’t above doing twirling spins barefoot in the grass on a beautiful day in her yard. Her books are her shields and she will admit to having her head in the clouds more times than she probably should . . . but she doesn’t let any of this bother her too much, remembering her favorite quote by Le Guin, and knowing that the creative adult is indeed the child who survived.

She graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 3D Computer Animation/Interactive Design and minored in Art History at East Carolina University. Living her life solely as an artist and illustrator after school was not enough–knowing that a picture was only worth a thousand words–she felt she needed more. She had to get the trapped stories, the vivid, sometimes adventurous, sometimes terrifying dreams, out of her head. Like the authors, artists, musicians, scientists, peaceful warriors who inspire her, she too wishes to share her worlds with others, let them escape into the unknown. Let them know that like her, it’s okay to be different.

My Review:

4/5 Stars

Eventide is about a girl named Devon who was a driver in a tragic car accident that killed her best friend. Soon after the accident she starts seeing Rachael everywhere, and begins to believe that her hallucinations are real. Devon, so desperate for answers and clinging on to any hope that her friend may still be alive, begins searching for answers, for reasons to explain all the crazy things she starts to see. And the more she searches, the darker the world around her becomes. I absolutely adored this book. I’m a huge fan of stories about the Sidhe and Eventide does not disappoint! It’s action packed filled with mystery, darkness, and everlasting friendship. It’s intense, and a unique addition to stories of the fae world. It is unlike any book I have ever read. Not often do you hear about faes that practically suck the life out of people and thrive on the energy their souls give until they blink out of existence. One reason I loved this story so much is because of Devon’s unyielding devotion to her friend Rachael. Once she starts to believe that she’s really seeing Rachael, and once she discovers that Rachael needs her help, Devon doesn’t give up. She is loyal to her friend to the very end of the book. Another thing I enjoyed about Devon is that Devon doesn’t have any supernatural powers and yet she lives in a supernatural world. Devon is your average, normal teenage girl that is thrown into difficult situations. She’s courageous and determined, a wonderful heroine in the YA genre. The love story in the book was super adorable. I loved Jonah right from the beginning. He’s so kind, and so sensible. He’s her anchor to the world and they help balance each other as they uncover more about what happened to Rachael and how to save her. I also really enjoyed Devon’s interactions with her four year old sister Lucy. She’s so stinkin cute. This book is a must read and I can’t wait to read more books from Chrstine Allen-Riley! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery, adventure, fantasy, and stories about the Sidhe.

Book Quote:

“Are you my sister’s boyfriend, now?”
My hands were still on his waist, and I felt a chuckle vibrate through him. He nodded at Lucy then he turned to me and added, “well, I am if she wants me to be.”
My little sister cocked her head to the side and looked at me. “Do you want him to?”
A flush warmed my face, and I nodded.
“Okay. wanna play barbies with me?”
Reaching out, I ruffled her hair. “Maybe after we eat. Right now I’m going to say goodbye to Jonah. Why don’t you go inside and see if you can help with supper?”
“All right. Bye, Boyfriend.”

Book Quote:

Maggie’s bloodshot eyes hardened. “If you don’t find a way to save her, no one will. You have to do it. You’re the only one.”
“I don’t know how. I don’t know what to do.”
Maggie grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me. Hard. “figure it out, girl. If you don’t she has no chance.”

The Blood of Olympus Teaser

The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus #5)

by Rick Riordan (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they’re stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake. The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it “might” be able to stop a war between the two camps. The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea’s army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

Quote 1:

“He forced his fists to unclench. “Look, lady, we’re not going to go all Hunger Games on each other. Isn’t going to happen.”

Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus

Quote 2:

“That is correct,” Zeus said. “The blood of Olympus was spilled. She is fully conscious.”
“Oh, come on!” Percy complained. “I get a little nosebleed and I wake up the entire earth? That’s not fair!”

Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus

Quote 3:

“What if we promoted, like, Adidas shoes?’ Percy wondered. ‘Would that make Nike mad enough to show up?” Leo smiled nervously. Maybe he and Percy did share something else – a stupid sense of humour. “Yeah, I bet that would totally be against her sponsorship deal. THOSE ARE NOT THE OFFICIAL SHOES OF THE OLYMPICS! YOU WILL DIE NOW!”
