The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus #5)

by Rick Riordan (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen—all of them—and they’re stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood—the blood of Olympus—in order to wake. The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it “might” be able to stop a war between the two camps. The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea’s army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

Quote 1:

“He forced his fists to unclench. “Look, lady, we’re not going to go all Hunger Games on each other. Isn’t going to happen.”

Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus

Quote 2:

“That is correct,” Zeus said. “The blood of Olympus was spilled. She is fully conscious.”
“Oh, come on!” Percy complained. “I get a little nosebleed and I wake up the entire earth? That’s not fair!”

Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus

Quote 3:

“What if we promoted, like, Adidas shoes?’ Percy wondered. ‘Would that make Nike mad enough to show up?” Leo smiled nervously. Maybe he and Percy did share something else – a stupid sense of humour. “Yeah, I bet that would totally be against her sponsorship deal. THOSE ARE NOT THE OFFICIAL SHOES OF THE OLYMPICS! YOU WILL DIE NOW!”

Quote 1:

“When was the last time you were kissed?” he went on easily.
“And I’m not talking about the dry, noncommittal, meaningless kiss you forget about as soon as it’s over.” I scrambled out of my stupor long enough to quip, “Like last night’s kiss?”
He cocked an eyebrow.
“That so? I wonder, then, why you moaned my name after you drifted to sleep.”
“I did not!”
“If only I’d had a video recorder. When was the last time you were really kissed?” he repeated.”You seriously think I’m going to tell you?” “Your ex?” he guessed. “And if he was?”
“Was it your ex who taught you to be ashamed and uncomfortable with intimacy? He took from you what he wanted, but never seemed to be around when you wanted something back, isn’t that right? What do you want, Britt?” he asked me point-blank.
“Do you really want to pretend like last night never happened?”
“Whatever happened between me and Calvin isn’t your business,” I fired back.
“For your information, he was a really great boyfriend. I-I wish I was with him right now!” I exclaimed untruthfully.
My careless comment made him flinch, but he recovered quickly.
“Does he love you?”
“What?” I said, flustered.
“If you know him so well, it shouldn’t be a hard question. Is he in love with you? Was he ever in love with you?”
I tossed my head back haughtily. “I know what you’re doing. You’re trying to cut him down because you’re-you’re jealous of him!”
“You’re damn right I’m jealous,” he growled. “When I kiss a girl, I like to know she’s thinking about me, not the fool who gave her up.”
Becca Fitzpatrick, Black Ice

Quote 2:

“They say that when you’re about to die, your life flashes before your eyes. They never tell you that when you watch someone you once loved dying, hovering between this life and the next, it’s twice as painful, because you’re reliving two lives that traveled one road together.”
Becca Fitzpatrick, Black Ice

Book Quotes:

“I decided to deflect her attitude by giving a long, Southern answer. I come from people who know how to draw things out. Annoy a Southerner, and we will drain away the moments of your life with our slow, detailed replies until you are nothing but a husk of your former self and that much closer to death.”
Maureen Johnson, The Name of the Star

“Fear can’t hurt you,” she said. “When it washes over you, give it no power. It’s a snake with no venom. Remember that. That knowledge can save you.”
Maureen Johnson, The Name of the Star

My Thoughts:

It’s been awhile since I’ve read The Name of the Star. This book is amazing though. It’s perfect for those interested in a ghost story with some cutesy sideline romance. It’s intense, action packed, and very creative. The sequel is entitled The Madness Underneath and the third installment comes out February 10th (squeal!!!!) entitled The Shadow Cabinet. I’ve been DYING for the third installment since The Madness Underneath came out almost a year ago. I’ve been anxiously waiting to find out what all exactly is going on with a particular handsome character (Stephen). If anyone is looking for a good ghostly read I highly recommend this book!

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen.

Quote 1:

“There are moments that you’ll remember for the rest of your life and there are moments that you think you’ll remember for the rest of your life, and it’s not often they turn out to be the same moment.”
Maggie Stiefvater, The Scorpio Races

Quote 2:

“Sean reaches between us and slides a thin bracelet of red ribbons over my free hand. Lifting my arm, he presses his lips against the inside of my wrist. I’m utterly still; I feel my pulse tap several times against his lips, and then he releases my hand.
“For luck,” he says. He takes Dove’s lead from me.
“Sean,” I say, and he turns. I take his chin and kiss his lips, hard. I’m reminded, all of a sudden, of that first day on the beach, when I pulled his head from the water.
“For luck,” I say to his startled face.”

The Infinite Sea Teaser

The Infinite Sea (The Fifth Wave #2)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

Quote 1:

“And, for one– ten thousandth of a second, all of it fell away, the despair and grief and anger and pain and hunger, and the old Ben Parish rose from the dead. The eyes that impaled. The smile that slayed. In another moment, he would fade, slide back into the new Ben, the one called Zombie, and I understood something I hadn’t before: He was dead, the object of my schoolgirl desires, just as the schoolgirl who desired him was dead.”
Rick Yancey, The Infinite Sea

Quote 2:

“The beautiful wooden board on a stand in my father’s study. The gleaming ivory pieces. The stern king. The haughty queen. The noble knight. The pious bishop. And the game itself, the way each piece contributed its individual power to the whole. It was simple. It was complex. It was savage; it was elegant. It was a dance; it was a war. It was finite and eternal. It was life.”
Rick Yancey, The Infinite Sea

Book Summary (Goodreads):

The road to power…is paved with blood and magic.

Cleo is now a prisoner in her own palace, forced to be an ambassador for Mytica as the evil King Gaius lies to her people.
Magnus stands to eventually inherit the new kingdom but is still obsessed with his feelings for his adopted sister, Lucia.
Lucia is haunted by the outcome of the breathtaking display of magic that allowed her father to capture the kingdoms.
Jonas watched at the palace gates a troop of rebels behind him, waiting for him to tell them how he plans to overtake King Gaius.

After a bloody siege, Auranos has been defeated, its young queen orphaned and dethroned. The three kingdoms—Auranos, Limeros, and Paelsia—are now unwillingly united as one country called Mytica. But the allure of ancient, dangerous magic beckons still, and with it the chance to rule not just Mytica, but the whole world over….

At the heart of the fray are four brave young people grappling for that magic and the power it promises. For Cleo, the magic would enable her to reclaim her royal seat. In Jonas’s hands, it frees his nation, and in Lucia’s, it fulfills the ancient prophecy of her destiny. And if the magic were Magnus’s, he would finally prove his worth in the eyes of his cruel and scheming father, King Gaius, who rules Mytica with a punishing hand.

When Gaius begins to build a road into the Forbidden Mountains to physically link all of Mytica, he sparks a long-smoking fire in the hearts of the people that will forever change the face of this land. For Gaius’s road is paved with blood, and its construction will have cosmic consequences.

Book Quotes:

“Evil is a choice one makes, not a natural state of being.”
Morgan Rhodes, Rebel Spring

“A KISS! A KISS!” the crowd chanted.
(…)
“I dont know,” Cleo began, sickened by the thought of it. How far was she willing to go to appear agreeable? “Quite honestly, it seems like a bad–”

Magnus took a tight hold of her arm and turned her around. Before she could say another word, he put his hand behind her neck, drew her closer to him, and kissed her.

Every muscle in her body stiffened. It was the sensation of being a bird caught in a hinter’s trap. Her wings screamed out for her to fly away as fast and as far as possible. But he held her firmly in place, his mouth against hers, soft but demanding a response.

She gripped the front of his shirt. It was all too much–she wasn’t sure if she was pushing him away or pulling him closer. Much like diving into deep water, she had no idea which way would find her air to breathe or which way would drag her down deeper into the depths where she would surely drown.

And for a moment, just a moment, she found it didn’t seem to matter.

The warmth of his body against hers on such a cold day, his now-familiar scent of sandalwood, the heat of his mouth against hers…it all made her head spin, and logic fell away.
Morgan Rhodes, Rebel Spring

My Thoughts:

I’m anxiously awaiting for Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms #3) which is due to release on December 9th! I’ve read Rebel Spring and simply loved it! It’s an amazing fantasy novel and I simply cannot wait to see what happens next! Morgan Rhodes as crafted quite a transpiring world that is complex and filled with both goodness and darkness. I’m most interested in see more about Magnus because I LOVED Magnus in Rebel Spring. And what I love about Magnus is that I really have no idea if he’s going to end up as a good person or a bad person. But there is so much he has to offer as a character! Definitely check out Falling Kingdoms and Rebel Springs and get caught up before book three is released!

Quote 1:
“But if I’m it, the last of my kind, the last page of human history, like hell I’m going to let the story end this way. I may be the last one, but I am the one still standing. I am the one turning to face the faceless hunter in the woods on an abandoned highway. I am the one not running but facing. Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity’s last war, then I am the battlefield.”
Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave
Quote 2:
“I am a shark, Cassie,” he says slowly, drawing the words out, as if he might be speaking to me for the last time. Looking into my eyes with tears in his, as if he’s seeing me for the last time. “A shark who dreamed he was a man.”

by Julie Kagawa

Book Synopsis (Goodreads):

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Book Quotes:

“Me? Die? Didn’t they tell you, princess? I’m Robin Goodfellow.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

War?” Something cold touched my cheek, and I glanched up to see snowflakes swirling in a lightning-riddled sky. It was eerily beautiful, and I shivered. “What will happen then?”
Ash stepped closer. His fingers came up to brush the hair from my face, sending an electric shock through me from my spine to my toes. His cool breath tickled my ear as he leaned in.
“I’ll kill you.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

“Careful, human.” Grimalkin appeared on the corner of the stage, overshadowed by the dead chimera. “Do not lose your heart to a faery prince. It never ends well.”
“Who asked you?” I glared at him. “And why do you always pop up when you’re not wanted? You got your payment. Why are you still following me?”
“You are amusing,” purred Grimalkin.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

My Thoughts:

This entire series is amazing! The story continues with Meghan in The Iron Daughter (book 2), The Iron Queen (book 3), and from Ash’s point of view in The Iron Knight (book 4). Each book just get’s better and better. Each of them are entirely epic andfantastic and the last book is my all time favorite of the entire series. If you like fantasy, fae, adventure, and a love story that’d doomed from the start, then be sure to check this book out! The first book always made me think of the movie the Labrinth since Meghan goes through the land of fae in order to find her brother, only with a few technological twists. And if you like the Iron Fey, be sure to check out Evan’s point of view in the Call of the Forgotten Series!  Check out The Iron King on Goodreads!

“You are the biggest fool of a boy I’ve ever known,” Mott said. Then his tone softened. “But you will serve Carthya well.”
“I wish I felt ready to do this,” I said. “The closer we come to the moment, the more I see every defect in my character that caused my parents to send me away in the first place.”
“From all I’m told, the prince they sent away was selfish, mischievous, and destructive. The king who returns is courageous, noble, and strong.”
“And a fool,” I added
Mott chuckled. “You are that too.”

Trial by Fire (The Worldwalker Trilogy #1)

by Josephine Angelini (Goodreads Author)

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily’s other self in this alternate universe.

What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can’t hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.

Quote 1:

“Sorry about today,” he said sincerely.  “I didn’t mean to drag you into it.”
“That was some slap.  How’s your face?”
He sighed dramatically.  “Unfortunately, the nurse said that slap was loaded with cooties.”
Lily sucked in a pained breath.  “Cooties.  You know what that means?”
“They’ll have to amputate.”
“Girls across the tri-state area will be inconsolable.  A national day of mourning is sure to follow.”
He smiled at her lazily, his mouth inches away, eyes locked with hers.  Lily desperately wanted to forget the whole thing and kiss his cootie-infested face, but something held her back.

—Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini

Quote 2:

She was on the floor, her fever eating her up inside, and then it all shifted.
She saw herself lying there, teeth clacking together, spine bowing and arching as her muscles pulled her bones and joints to their limits.  She hovered there, above herself, watching her body tear itself apart.  Then–she didn’t hear a girl’s voice, not exactly.  It was fainter than that, like it was coming from far away, and the words were being placed inside her head.
You are sick in this world.
Lily wondered if she was talking to herself.
Come to me and be the most powerful person in the world.
But … I don’t want to go, Lily thought.  The faint voice went away,
and Lily fell back into her body.
