Shawn Smucker will capture readers’ imaginations with this masterfully written debut novel that combines elements of mystery and magical realism.

It was the summer of storms, strays, and strangers. The summer that lightning struck the big oak tree in the front yard. The summer his mother died in a tragic accident.

Twelve-year-old Samuel Chambers would do anything to turn back time. Prompted by three strange carnival fortune-tellers and the surfacing of his mysterious and reclusive neighbor, Samuel begins his search for the Tree of Life—the only thing that could possibly bring his mother back. His quest to defeat death entangles him and his best friend, Abra, in an ancient conflict and forces Samuel to grapple with an unwelcome question: could it be possible that death is a gift?

Haunting and hypnotic, The Day the Angels Fell is a story that explores the difficult questions of life in a voice that is fresh, friendly, and unafraid. With this powerful novel, Shawn Smucker has carved out a spot for himself in the tradition of authors Madeleine L’Engle and Lois Lowry.

Samuel is the main character in The Day the Angels Fell. Here, I ask him a few questions that unearth some information you don’t get in the book:

Samuel, what did you like about growing up on a farm?

You know, I was a quiet kid. And we lived outside of town so I didn’t have any friends besides Abra who I saw on a regular basis apart from school. But I liked that. I liked being close to the river and the church and having all of those barns to run around and play in. I wasn’t crazy about the chores, but Dad would usually throw baseball with me afterwards. Those were good days. It’s a good place to live as a family, on a farm.

How about your grandparents?

Not that much, actually. I know my father’s parents were both gone by the time I was born. And I heard rumors about my mother, how she grew up in that old lady’s house on the edge of town, the old lady who took in kids who didn’t have parents. But she never told us about her parents, or where she came from. That whole side of my family was a blank space.

Do you know anything about your parents’ childhoods?

My dad seemed to have a happy childhood. He often spoke about playing baseball, and the stories he told me usually revolved around this farm where he grew up, or the surrounding area. But my mom didn’t say much at all. If I asked her anything about her growing-up years, she’d just shake her head with a sad smile and say something like, “Oh, Sam, that’s so long ago. I can’t even remember.”

What have you done for all these years?

All these years? You mean since the angels fell? I guess I’ve just lived a quiet life. I farmed the farm on my own for many years, and I couldn’t do much, but I was by myself so I didn’t need much. I rented out the fields I couldn’t tend myself. I hired a boy for a while to take care of the garden, but he could never do it quite to my standard, so that only lasted a few years. I grew older. I guess that’s what I’ve done. I’ve grown older.

Is it possible you might be exaggerating or mis-remembering everything that happened that summer?

(Pause)

I suppose. Though there are these tangible things that remain – the atlas. The notes. The dagger. These things are real as real, right here in front of me.

Are you scared of dying?

(Chuckles) Am I scared of dying? Heh. Scared of dying. No. Well, I am not scared of death, that much I can tell you. Dying? I guess it depends how it happens. I’m not good with pain, a very low tolerance. I’m even worse with suffering. I will be honest and say I’m scared of suffering. But of death? No. I am not afraid of death.

I’d even go so far as to say this – I’m very intrigued about what comes next. That’s the part, the after-death, that I look forward to. I have no fears whatsoever about that.

Shawn Smucker lives with his wife and six children in the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Day the Angels Fell is his first novel.

Bestselling Author Transports Readers to the Appalachian Mountains for Adventure and Healing

Packed with history, These Healing Hills by bestselling author Ann H. Gabhart introduces readers to the fascinating and difficult life of frontier nursing.

When the soldier Francine Howard planned to marry after WWII writes to tell her he is in love with a woman in England, Francine is devastated and in need of a change. She seeks a fresh start in the Appalachian Mountains, training to be a nurse midwife for the Frontier Nursing Services.

It is in these mountains that Francine crosses paths with Ben Locke, a soldier still very much suffering from the horrors of war. With his future shrouded in as much mist as his beloved mountains, he’s at a loss when it comes to envisioning what’s next for his life.

While Francine and Ben find they are from completely different worlds and possess very different values, they both learn that things don’t always go the way we plan. Ann H. Gabhart invites readers to witness the healing power of love and step forward to tantalizing new possibilities.
Praise for These Healing Hills:
“Reading These Healing Hills is like wrapping up in a beloved quilt and stepping back in time. Ann H. Gabhart captures a fascinating slice of Appalachian history in this tale of a mountain midwife and a soldier, bringing it to life as only a native Kentuckian can. Poignant and romantic, witty and wise, with enduring spiritual truths, this is my favorite novel of hers to date.”
—Laura Frantz, author of A Moonbow Night

“What a wonderful story! Filled with true-to-life characters (including some four-footed ones) and fascinating historical details, These Healing Hills is a beautifully written, heartwarming story of life in the Appalachian Mountains at the end of the Second World War. Ann Gabhart combines vivid descriptions, meticulous research, and a deep understanding of the human heart to create a story that will linger in readers’ memories long after the last page is turned. This is a book to savor, not just once, but over and over. A true keeper.”
—Amanda Cabot, bestselling author of A Stolen Heart

“Ann H. Gabhart delivers a rich tale set in Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains at the close of World War II. Francine buries the painful loss of the man she loves beneath the difficult work of a frontier nurse-midwife. The mountain people touch a place deep in her heart, and she gladly sacrifices the life she always wanted in order to serve them. But can she ever be truly happy among the hills and hollows where modern medicine often gives way to ancient folk cures? These Healing Hills is a fascinating and beautifully crafted story that I highly recommend.”
—Virginia Smith, bestselling author of The Amish Widower

“You are sure to enjoy this endearing story of love lost and found in the enchanting hills of Kentucky.”
—Jan Watson, author of the Troublesome Creek series

These Healing Hills was the perfect evening breeze to still my soul. The story follows Francine Howard, a nurse leaving her home behind for a new place to belong. She goes to nursing school and the town instantly falls for her charming personality. Fran is kind and honorable, and dedicated to her work through and through. I loved her from the beginning. She’s fierce and fearless, and takes pride in her work. The story also follows Ben Locke, a soldier in the war. When he comes home from war he is instantly drawn to Fran. Both Fran and Ben have wounds that need healing. Ben is wonderful, to put it simply. And it’s thanks to him that there’s a certain adorable dog named Sarge in the story. A dog that will take you by surprise and make you fall in love as well!

To be honest, I never pictured myself as a fan of historical fiction. But lately I’ve thoroughly enjoyed travelling to the past and being able to envision myself in that time and place. These Healing Hills was calm, enjoyable, comforting, and exactly what I needed as my days have become so busy. I don’t know how else to describe other than that it’s a very gentle story about two people finding love again and discovering where their home is.

It’s a great read! Be sure to check it out!

Ann H. Gabhart is the bestselling author of several Shaker novels—The Outsider, The Believer, The Seeker, The Blessed, and The Gifted—as well as Angel Sister, Small Town Girl, Love Comes Home, Words Spoken True, and The Heart of Hollyhill series. Colette Sheridan is being remodeled.

As a San Antonio architect, she’d have vowed her career was to investigate the history and create new functions for the structures everyone else saw as eyesores. The old German farmhouse in Comfort, Texas, might be the screeching end of that dream job. The assignment seemed so ideal at the start; generous clients, a stunning location, and a pocketful of letters that were surely meant to explain the ranch’s story. All that goodness crashed louder than a pile of two-by-fours when her grandfather announced he’d lured Colette’s ex-husband back to San Antonio to take over the family architecture firm. Now, not only does Colette have to endure the challenges posed by Beau Jefferson, the client’s handpicked contractor, a house that resists efforts to be modernized, and letters that may hold the secret to buried treasure, but she also has to decide if she has the courage to fight for her future.

Set against the backdrop of the Texas Hill Country, Colette and Beau have to rely on plans neither of them constructed in order to navigate the changes of a house with a story to tell, and a future they couldn’t even imagine.

How Pinterest Helps Readers Get “Hooked” on Kimberly Fish Books

Guest Post by Kimberly Fish

When I’m writing at my desk, I often have a bulletin board over my desk pinned with magazine photos, old letters, notes about where I need to move a character, or any assorted detail related to creating an authentic backdrop for my story to grow. I also find that looking at photos on Pinterest is like adding firecrackers to my imagination. I put together some boards to inspire me when I’m writing, and I thought maybe you might like a peek into the “inspiration boards” I’ve pinned to my Pinterest account.

For instance, with the novel, Comfort Plans, it was important to learn the various phases of construction related to renovating an old ranch. That’s not the kind of detail I already knew, so I bought several books from used bookstores, interviewed friends in the industry, and then set about entering specialized words into Pinterest’s search bar to help fill in the gaps. I’m not going to lie; I did get distracted looking at design ideas, handsome character actors, long-reaching vistas of Texas landscape, and peculiar architectural elements that may or may not have ended up in the final draft of a novel about an old German farmhouse that resists its remodel. But those of you who have done any amount of research know this: going down the rabbit trails is sometimes where you collect the best information.

Stay as long as you want on Pinterest, wander down the rabbit trails of photo boards, but in the end read a good book like Comfort Plans, and enjoy a mental vacation exploring a time, place, and circumstance that stretches your imagination. Enjoy!

Kimberly Fish started writing professionally with the birth of her second child and the purchase of a home computer. Having found this dubious outlet, she then entered and won The Writer’s League of Texas manuscript contest which fed her on-going fascination with story crafting.

She has since published in magazines, newspapers, and online formats and in 2017, released the first novel in a series set during the World War II years in Longview, Texas—The Big Inch. She lives with her family in East Texas.

I was quite surprised with how much I enjoyed Chasing Secrets. It’s the kind of book that reels you in from the beginning and you are left with so many questions that you need to hurry and finish it to find out the answers. It’s a quick read, filled with action, murder, mystery, and a soft love story. Not to mention a kick ass heroine and a sweet guy hero.

I loved the characters that Eason has created. Separate, these characters are amazing, but together, they are perfect and unstoppable. Haley is an extraordinary character. She’s a bodyguard that is continuously selfless and does whatever she can to help others. She’s noble and fierce, and lovable from the very beginning. Steven moves to the town that Haley lives in and is a detective. He’s handsome, smart, and kind. Steven is on the haunt for a killer while Haley is doing her best to help a troubled teen, one that leaves her in a sticky situation. When their paths unexpectedly cross they become quite the pair as the unravel what is going on in their town and what it has to do with Haley’s past. The two are attracted to each other immediately and I love their camaraderie. They are too cute to pass up reading their story.

As for the gripping plot, it thickens the deeper you dive into the book with a shocking ending that leaves you both thrilled and pleased. There is so much mystery surrounded Haley and her past. Eason unravels this mystery with perfect ease. I loved it! Did I mention that Haley is a kick ass ass heroine? I was continuously surprised by her endurance when it came to helping others!

Chasing Secrets is action packed. It’s a real page turner. One you won’t be able to put down. Be sure to check it out!

A MATTER OF TRUST

Montana Rescue Series, Book 3

By SUSAN MAY WARREN

Genre: Contemporary Romance / Action / Christian

Publisher: Revell

Date of Publication: July 4, 2017

Number of Pages: 336

Champion backcountry snowboarder Gage Watson was at the top of his game when one of his fans crashed and died—a death blamed on Gage. After being sued for negligence and stripped of his sponsorships, Gage had no choice but to leave the limelight behind and search for a new life.

Although Gage is now working as a ski patrol in Montana’s rugged mountains, as well as serving on the PEAK Rescue team, he still can’t find peace—or forget the woman who betrayed him.

As a former attorney and one of the youngest senators in the country, Ella Blair is used to being in the public eye. But she does have one secret that has remained hidden—a secret that could have saved Gage his career. Wracked with regret, she’ll do almost anything to atone for her betrayal of him.

When Ella’s brother goes missing on one of Glacier National Park’s most dangerous peaks, the last thing Gage wants is to let Ella join the search. Not only will he have to find her reckless brother, but he’ll have to keep her safe as well. But Ella is undeterred, and suddenly Gage finds himself in a high-stakes adventure on a mountain with a woman who could cost him everything—again. In a world of dangerous heights, devastating injuries, and blinding snowstorms, Gage and Ella must put aside the past and learn to trust each other if they hope to survive.

A Matter of Trust is a mix of high tension, suspense, drama and forgiveness. As I usually lean towards the more fantasy action genre, I’m always really surprised and excited to enjoy books like these. Especially when it sparks my interest for other novels the author has written. Susan Warren has an amazing sense of character and scenery.

Despite Gage and Ella’s own upended history, Gage puts things aside and sets off to rescue her brother. Struggling with his faith in her and own spiritual faith, their journey has many twists and turns that keep the reader well engaged in their story. This book also follows other characters, or duos as it were, in the team. From previous books, we’re given glimpses of their own complex stories and what’s to come. Since I wasn’t as familiar with other characters in the series, I did tend to focus more on other areas with the main characters, Gage and Ella. Gage is a wonderfully engaging character with his own doubts and growth throughout the book. Ella was a bit harder to connect with, especially since she is trying to redeem her past decisions and making new difficult ones along the way. I still enjoyed their interactions and dynamic that pushed the boundaries of usual relationships you tend to see or read in stories.

I’ve never been good at skiing but I love snow. The way Warren described it was fun and lively to the point where I’m tempted to retry it again…on a bunny hill. The wintery scene of Montana was really well done and made me want to travel there someday. Well, when it’s a tad warmer of course. I definitely recommend this great summer read! Hitchin’ Post is an adorable must read children’s book for any Texas lover out there. The tale follows a bunny cowboy named Hitch, it describes how he got his name, what he does on the farm, and even a fun car ride he takes. It’s a cute story and has a great message for kids and adults alike. “It’s the big and the small and all the in-between that should make you feel the richest of rich.” – Julie Barker from Hitchin’ Post

A few things stood out to me with this children story. First the story itself. It’s really perfect for a parent to read with their kid, or to have a kid read it to their parent. I think it would make a wonderful bedtime story and I just love the message this story gives. Another thing that stood out to me was the beautiful illustrations by Carolyn Altman. So much beautiful detail in this cartoon pictures. And it really sets the stage for what good ol’ Texas looks and feels like. Another thing I loved was the overall length of the book. It’s not too short by any means and I think if you working with a child that you’re trying to increase the amount of reading time they have (your child or one of your young students) I think this would be a great book for them to sit and listen to.

As far as using the book at school with my kids as a teaching tool, there’s lots of different things I could use this book for in a special education classroom. For one, an introduction to Texas Regions. I could terrains such as suburban, urban, and rural with a focus on rural. I could identifying animals. It’s long enough too that it would be a good book to use for reading comprehension with my students.

If you’re looking for a great Texas children’s book with wonderful illustrations and a make you feel good story that you could have a fun read with your child or to use in the classroom as entertainment or a teaching tool, then be sure to check out Hitchin’ Post. It’s such a cute story. You’ll love it!

Julie Barker was born and raised in west Texas, and currently resides in Quanah, Texas, with her husband and three children.  She maintained her west Texas roots into college when she attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, receiving a degree in social work.  Julie has grown up surrounded by the ranching heritage, and felt drawn to share this way of life through the adventures of the little cowboy jackrabbit, Hitchin’ Post.  Hitchin’ Post marks Julie’s debut into the world of children’s literature.  She was fortunate to have her mother, artist Carolyn Altman, provide the cute, whimsical illustrations of old Hitch and the 6Bs, making this project extra special.

Badlands was a real page turner! I read it in 24 hours because I couldn’t put the book down. I think what I truly loved about it was how it magically seemed to transport me back in time to the old west. Badlands is a gripping tale about a woman, a former doctor on the run, whom is kidnapped by a prostitute that longs for a new life. News of the doctor’s husband and his impending trial keeps her close to the woman she once despised. Together the doctor and prostitute learn so much of each other, their strengths, their weaknesses, with a lingering doubt in their fragile trust always on their mind. But through it all, they develop an amazing friendship that’s raw and deep, the kind that keeps you alive.

I simply love the characters in this story. They were real and complex, the kind that drew breath from the very first page. I love both Laura and Rosemond and I love their relationship, how their friendship unfolds, and all the mystery that surrounds Rosemond. Of course I enjoyed Kindle as well and after meeting him I am craving more of his and Laura’s story. I’m ready to dive into Sawbones and Blood Oath just so I can get more of them. Badlands was driven and intense, giving me little snippets about the other novels that has pulled me into wanting to read more. I NEED those stories! And I cannot wait to read the other two.

I love how Lenhardt shines a light on the true, brutality of the west. But also the good as well. I love how Lenhardt shows us the hardship of prostitutes during this time, how men were treated superior to women, and how the main character does what she can for women in general when it comes to their health. I also loved the moments when Laura would come to a salon and somehow would get inside regardless of the rules. Laura certain was a rule breaker and is a great icon for women empowerment.

Badlands is unlike any western tale I have read before and I like it all the more for that factor. It’s a must read for anyone that enjoys mystery, suspense, love, cowboys, old west, and the intensity of a character being on the run from the law. Badlands is everything I ever wanted in a western and so much more. I am ready to take the 3:10 back to the eighteen hundreds to read about a heroine that is noble, humble, feels guilt and remorse when she does something wrong, tries to do the right thing no matter the costs, and is a total kick ass doctor.

What about you? Ready to board the train with me?

Melissa Lenhardt is the author the Jack McBride mystery series, as well as the Laura Elliston historical fiction series. Her debut mystery, STILLWATER, was a finalist for the 2014 Whidbey Writers’ MFA Alumni Emerging Writers Contest, and SAWBONES, her historical fiction debut, was hailed as a “thoroughly original, smart and satisfying hybrid, perhaps a new subgenre: the feminist Western” by Lone Star Literary Life. A lifelong Texan, she lives in the Dallas area with her husband and two sons.

Grace Mallory is tired of hiding. She hungers for a normal life, perhaps even a suitor like two of her friends in Harper’s Station have found. But when the man she believes responsible for her father’s death discovers her whereabouts, survival takes priority.

Amos Bledsoe prefers bicycles to horses and private conversations over the telegraph wire to social gatherings with young ladies
who see him as nothing more than an oddity. His fellow telegrapher, the mysterious Miss G, has been the ideal companion. For months, their friendship—dare he believe, courtship?—over the wire has fed his hope that he has finally found the woman God intends for him. However, when he intercepts an ominous message and discovers her life is in peril, Amos must shed the cocoon of his quiet nature to become the hero Grace requires.

Excerpt from Heart on the Line
by Karen Witemeyer

It was him. Mr. A. She’d recognize his quick touch at the key anywhere. So crisp and precise. A metronome couldn’t create spaces any more rhythmic. She’d long admired his deft hand at the key. Setting her tea on the table, Grace slid into her office chair, a giddy tickle in her stomach despite her best efforts to maintain a sense of detachment.

 Yes, Station Dn. I’m here.

Excellent! I worried I had waited too long to call. Dinner at my sister’s took longer than expected.

I hope you didn’t rush away on my account, Grace tapped.

I was eager to escape. Believe me.

What dastardly plague did they set upon you? Grace grinned to herself as she tapped out the words. Mr. A always seemed to have a humorous story to tell about his family, his life so wonderfully normal that whenever she listened to him, she managed to forget all about danger and unseen foes. For a few blessed minutes, she was simply a girl talking to a young man, no worries in sight.

I dare not tell you, for fear of spreading the contagion. It seems to strike the women around me with alarming regularity.

Intrigued, Grace leaned forward. Surely the distance between us will serve as adequate protection.

My mother and sister have both been afflicted for some time, I’m sorry to say, but tonight their symptoms worsened.

That sounds dire, indeed. Did you call a physician?

No point. There is only one cure to their ailment. And apparently I am the one who must distribute the healing dose.

Then you should do so at once, Grace replied, grinning as she reached for her tea. Mr. A never failed to entertain.

I would, of course, he said, but I find the key ingredient in the required elixir to be frustratingly elusive.

Can you not simply visit a druggist?

I’m afraid not. You see, the item I must find in order to cure this plague of interference is . . . a wife.

The tea Grace had just sipped spewed from her mouth to splatter over the table in front of her. Coughs spasmed in her throat.

 A wife?

A strange fluttery sensation danced through her belly. So, he wasn’t married. Why did that particular piece of knowledge please her so well? Her hand trembled as she reached for the key. She had to make some kind of response to that. But what exactly should she say?

I’m sure they only have your best interests at heart.

They do. But a twenty-eight year-old man doesn’t really want his personal life dictated by his female relations.

Twenty-eight. A man in his prime. A man who was suddenly sharing more personal details with her than he ever had before.

Grace dabbed at the spilled tea with a handkerchief fetched from her skirt pocket, her mind spinning. Was he fishing for details in return? She wanted to reciprocate. It was what a friend would do. Yet she couldn’t afford to say too much.

I can’t claim as many years of experience dealing with meddling relations as you can, but a couple friends of mine have recently decided that marriage is not without its advantages. Thankfully, they have as yet avoided seeing me as a matchmaking prospect.

Grace yanked her hand from the telegraph key and made a fist, her heart pumping in a wild rhythm. Details cloaked in vagueness. Would he understand what she’d just revealed? The wire remained silent for an eternally long moment.

Count your blessings, he finally sent, his usually metronome-like precision stuttering slightly. Perhaps we could meet sometime to commiserate. I would—

Clear the line, a brash staccato tapping interrupted. I need to break in. This is an emergency.

Grace nearly jumped from her chair at the pounding intrusion. It exploded across the wire like cannon fire in a still forest.

Proceed, came the answer from Mr. A. Immediate. Meticulous. All hint of personal vulnerability gone.

Grace replied in kind, though she feared her touch on the key had yet to reassert its professional tone.

Hs. Dv station has a message to relay. Are you on the wire?

A message from the Denver station? Grace shivered even as she lurched forward to answer. Yes. This is Hs station. G on the wire. Go ahead.

Message relayed from R as follows: He knows where you are. Coming for you. Sorry.

Everything in Grace stilled. Numbness spread from her mind to her limbs and finally to her heart. Her day of reckoning had arrived. Chaucer Haversham had found her.
