The Keep (Converters #2)

by Tenille Berezay
Genre: YA Scifi/fantasy
Release Date: November 12th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

After a pardon from the convergence, Desiree returns to the protection of home. But safety is an illusion and her family is shattered by the violent retribution of a desperate enemy. On the run again, Desiree struggles to keep those she loves from a host of gathering threats—debilitating doubts, manipulative converters, dark technology, and a murdering madman. To save them all, Desiree will need more than her ability to convert, she’ll need to redefine her strength.

THE KEEP is the dramatic sequel to THE CONVERGENCE; a continuation of Desiree and Blake’s story.

Excerpt:

“What you need is combat training.” She points at the screens as they and the floor light up. The scene wavers then clears, leaving an image looking remarkably like the island outside. From the desk, Jade hands me a pair of goggles.

Since she’s being difficult, I slide them on without question. The sudden realism causes me to stumble backward. With the lenses on, the trees and vegetation of the island are suddenly alive. Their appearance is so authentic, I slide the glasses on and off a couple of times.

Jade’s sigh draws my attention to her rolling eyes. “Can you take this seriously?”

Tipping the goggles up, I glare at her. “Just enjoying the life I have left.”

Her frown deepens. “You’ll enjoy it more by learning to stay alive.” She points to the scene and I slide the glasses back on. “You can interact with anything you see on screen. Use whatever you find for weapons. There are no friendlies.”

Nodding as if everything she said was totally expected and commonplace, I step to the center of the lit floor. I clap my hands together. “I’m ready.”

“I doubt it.” I hear her say before the fight draws me in.

First, a man jumps from the tree to my right. I kick out knocking him back. He disappears. A shuffling in the trees draws my attention to another charging enemy. This one holds a knife in his hands. With a grab and a flick, I have the weapon. I slash at him and he vanishes. From above, a man drops. I roll away, throwing the knife simultaneously. It hits his chest and both he and the weapon disappear.

Two men rush me from opposite sides. Using a large nearby branch, I club one across the skull and fling one overhead with a well-placed hit between the legs. I knock the next attacker from a nearby tree by pelting him with the branch.

Then—from straight ahead—I’m threatened with a gun. I kick out, knocking it from his hands. The metal glints as it flies through the air. Sprinting, I catch it and spin to train it on the disarmed man. Seeing his hands thrown in the air, my finger eases off the trigger.

Instantly, everything disappears. Ripping the glasses away, I spin to Jade. She’s sitting at the desk, her chin resting on clasped hands, her beautiful features twisted in disappointment.

I pull in a restless breath. “What?”

She gestures to the now empty space. “I’ll admit you can fight.”

I toss the goggles on the desk. “But?”

Her gaze is level with unflinching honesty. “But you’re not going to survive.” I bite back my defense—the truth is I’m not even going to fight. Jade mistakes my silence for acceptance. “I said there were no friendlies. You should have pulled that trigger without hesitation, instead you didn’t pull it at all. What you lack is a killer instinct. That’s something I can’t train into you. You have to find it.”… She spins on a precarious heel and clicks to the door.

I stop her retreat. “So I’m supposed to suddenly become a blood thirsty murderer?”

“No, Desiree Morgan. You stay on offense. Always on offense. The minute you drop to defense is the minute you die.”

Promo Post by Tenille Berezay (Levels of Inspiration):

I’m always asked how I came up with the idea for the Converters Series. Usually, I don’t walk around with a lot of fantastic ideas in my head (though there are plenty of mediocre ones), but the idea of converting started with a sudden burst of brilliant inspiration, followed by lots of tiny inspirational bits.

The initial burst hit me one day as I was driving home from a day spent working on the ranch. Some near-death experience must have happened, but for the life of me (no pun intended) I can’t remember what it was…those near-death things are pretty frequent occurrences in ranching. So, safe in my car, I start thinking about adrenaline and how cool it would be if you could get that kind of burst of energy anytime you wanted. How it would be if you could control that energy.

Next, I started studying real-life ‘superhumans’ and the science behind our untapped mental potential. As I did, the process of converting developed in my mind. If a person could convert their emotions into energy and direct that energy into a physical or mental boost, it would create a world of realistic, believable superheroes.

Desiree came next—a kick-butt girl who has an ability she can’t begin to understand. Then I needed a guy who knew what she was and trains her. Originally, I wanted this to be an older-grandfather type because the new-guy with secrets and girl hiding powers is so very, very cliché. In the end, I caved into the cliché because I think the insta-love cliché is the devil and if my hero wasn’t the one with Desiree from the beginning their relationship would lack depth. It seemed a choice between an overdone cliché and an evil cliché. I chose overdone. I guess this probably qualifies as more desperation and less inspiration.

Once I started the story, inspiration came from conversations, personal relationships, and other great reads. The characters started taking on a life of their own and the story started flowing, driven by their reactions and motivations. The biggest surprise to me was the ending of The Convergence. I had something very cheesy and corny planned, but once I got there it all seemed wrong and not true to the characters. Once again, I caved in order to keep the character’s more realistic and true to themselves.

Inspiration for The Keep came mostly from the characters themselves and my beta readers. I asked them what they wanted to see from Desiree and Blake and shaped all of those answers into a book.  I also took my reviews into consideration, increasing the pacing and intensity. So, in a nutshell, The Keep was inspired by my readers and their love of the original characters.

Overall, I feel like inspiration is the easy part. Time is the challenge. I have lots of inspired books ideas bouncing around in my head, just waiting for all of other tiny bits of brilliance to shape them into a book worth reading. But first, I’m focusing on the third and final book in the Converters Series. Hopefully, there’s enough inspiration left to give Desiree and Blake the ending they deserve. And I hope you’ll enjoy the first two books in their story!

Synopsis

unnamed-1

Peter is still the boy who doesn’t grow up. Wendy is a girl who had to grow up too soon. And Wendy’s brother, Michael, has autism and a connection to The Island of Lost Children, a book for readers 8-12 and any fan of Peter Pan. When Peter leaves his island home, it’s to search for pick-up soccer games and mock sword fights. Wendy spends her evenings looking after her two brothers—sometimes bratty JJ as well as Michael—while her parents work nights.

In the midst of several unusual events including the disappearance of her classmate, Lily, at odds with her adoptive mother, Wendy doesn’t realize that Peter’s pirate nemesis is keeping an eye on her. Everything changes for Wendy and her family when a peculiar fairy named Bellatresse helps Peter find the girl whose stories he once listened to outside her bedroom window.

With its quirky humor and occasionally touching moments, The Island of Lost Children is about children creating their own stories, families, and communities, all while swashbuckling, navigating mystical rivers, riding child-made roller coasters, and, of course, sailing high through the open skies.

Review LSBBT

I’m most familiar with the classic tale of Peter Pan through the various movies, including Hook. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to read this reimagined tale of adventure, mystery, and growing up. I really enjoyed the modern take with more and more twists along the way.

For a book reimagined from Peter Pan, I found it actually quite original and exciting to read. By highlighting issues in our world as well, I believe The Island of Lost Children is a great reading choice for students. It’s an easy read that challenges the mind and brings a quirky and mysterious edge to the reader. It’s also a great choice for adults by challenging their own memory of the original tale and weaving a new one for them to enjoy. I look forward to a Book 2 for sure.

Wendy takes care of her brothers and graciously lives each day being a good and responsible person. For someone so young, she’s such an admirable character. I really enjoyed reading her parts. With the modern struggles that the family faces, such as needing to live in a smaller place due to money struggles and then losing Nana, you can see why the kids feel a need to escape. Michael, Wendy’s brother, is autistic in the book and has a more highlighted role than the original. Wendy’s love for him really shines through and it was moving to read his experiences on the Island.

From my original view of Peter in the original stories, he almost didn’t seem human sometimes with his flippant interactions and thoughts about being young forever. This changed more for me from the very beginning. For one, Peter immediately mentions his memories of his mother and being lost. Also, he has moments of wondering what the children are leaving behind. Batchelor does a very good job of varying between her character perspectives. Also, I usually comment on a books imagery when it’s particularly wonderful. You will definitely love the visuals of the Island as it comes to life with each new page! I would definitely recommend this book, so enter the giveaway!

Review LSBBT

This book had a lot of great qualities. Both of the main characters are incredibly likable in their quirky and a bit dorky actions. From the first meeting, they immediately notice the chemistry they share and try to ignore. Which of course brings the drama into the fold! Most of all, they are two complex people that have ultimately lonely hearts.

Liz Johnson has a knack for writing scenery. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the island and the love people obviously have for it in the book. As a love of cooking, Broadway, and calm places to think; Caden was really easy to connect with.

Adam as well has a curious spirit since he is a writer. Burdened by a mistake in his past, he is torn between escaping the quiet island or staying to discover a new lead and be with Caden. I’m definitely interested in reading more from Liz Johnson. I’m usually not a romance reader without some serious action but the summary of this was too good to pass up and I made a great decision doing so.

the-last-winter-moon-cover

Excerpt:

“You should, perhaps, be a little more concerned for yourself, Michelle, as your blood will aid my ascension as your next god.”

He grabs me by my hair and drags me through the doors back into the hall.  I feel my blood smearing across the floor.  The king barely acknowledges the slaughtered men in the other hall, and he drags me past them.

“He’s dead,” I hiss.  “Your true god is dead.  You can’t replace him.  You’re nothing.  Your powers aren’t even real.”

He laughs.  “The truth will be more painful than anything you hear from me, Michelle.  There is always a way.”  He grabs me by the collar of my shirt and shoves me face-first into the floor.  His foot stomps onto my back, the impact sending stars flying before my eyes, and I can’t help but shriek as I feel his fingers dig into the wound of my back.

I manage to raise my eyes to his.  The light of the hall pulses with my heartbeat.  As if his hand is smeared with honey, he licks my blood clean from his palm.

I’ve never felt more violated.

I can tell from the look in his eyes that this is just the appetizer to the feast he has planned.

I’m too weak to stop him from throwing me into another elevator behind me.  He locks the lever into the down position, then he slams the gate shut.

“I’ll be with you soon,” his sing-song voice echoes down the shaft, “then you will feel the authenticity of the power I have over you.”

Darkness eats the last trickle of light.

Synopsis

When the dust settles in this Texas town, who will be left standing?

It’s been six weeks since Jack McBride’s life went to hell: the resolution of his first case as chief sparked a countywide drug war, his brother Eddie rode into town with a pocket full of cocaine and trouble on his mind, his estranged wife returned from her one-year sabbatical determined to win him back, and Ellie Martin ended their brief affair.

To the Stillwater natives, the increase in local crime can be traced directly back to the day the outsider McBride took the job, and they’re gunning to get rid of him. One particular group is led by Joe Doyle, a successful local businessman who’s running for city council against Ellie and her plan to revitalize
downtown. Now Jack has discovered proof Doyle is the biggest crime lord in the county, and, with murders piling up and the drug war intensifying, Jack suspects the crimes aren’t business, but personal—and he’s the target.

The bitter election and Jack’s investigation spark old rivalries and new jealousies, making Ellie and those who love Stillwater most wonder if it’s even worth saving.

PRAISE FOR THE FISHER KING:

A fast-moving whodunit with compelling subplots and an appealing protagonist who’s likely to keep winning fans.” — Booklist

“The Fisher King is a haunting novel about different people’s claims on a place, and the power struggles, violence, and deception they use to seize it. Dark and ominous, the novel strikes the perfect mood and will be sure to appeal to fans eager for more of McBride’s adventures.” — Foreward Magazine

“[T]his combination of police procedural and romance puts the pedal to the metal and revs up the action.” — Kirkus Reviews

“Melissa Lenhardt’s Jack McBride is a complex and fallible protagonist you will root for. In The Fisher King, McBride takes on small town greed and corruption to his own peril in this sexy, gritty, and gripping thriller. A terrific new series!” —Deborah Crombie, New York Times bestselling author of the Duncan Kincaid and Gemma Jones series

“Lenhardt draws you so deep into Stillwater, Texas, you’ll think you live there and know everyone in town. In-depth characters, finely drawn descriptions, and a sure-fire plot make The Fisher King a very satisfying addition to the Texas crime fiction scene.” —Terry Shames, Macavity Award Winning author of The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake

“Melissa Lenhardt’s second Jack McBride novel, The Fisher King, is a terrific soap opera of an East Texas noir. A riveting tale of disgrace, betrayal, and redemption. . . . Lenhardt writes a hard story with a soft hand. Evocatively descriptive and painfully believable, The Fisher King is Peyton Place meets The Godfather in small-town Texas. Top notch.” —James W. THE FISHER KING SOUNDTRACK

One question I get asked quite often, by other writers especially, is if I listen to music when I write. The answer is yes and no. I don’t have to listen to music when I write, but sometimes I’m in the mood to listen to music, so I do. I definitely cannot listen to the Hamilton Soundtrack when I write because I’m so distracted by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s brilliant writing and the story that he’s telling that I get nothing done. Occasionally, I’ll listen to music I think my character would like to try to get in their headspace. But, generally, music isn’t required for me to get words on the page.

What I love doing, however, is making a soundtrack for my books. I created one for Stillwater—I’m pretty sure creating it was a procrastination tool—and when I finished The Fisher King, I wanted to create one for it. There is so much going on in this book, so many different moods, and the playlist reflects that. You have classic country for Ellie’s frame of mind, a gritty rock song for Eddie, Florence and the Machine for Susan and Brian, and some Coldplay for Jack. Bet you didn’t know that Jack liked Coldplay. Don’t hold it against him.

Numb by Airborne Toxic Event – Can’t think of a more appropriate summation of where Jack and Ellie are at the beginning of the book.

Hurts Like Heaven by Coldplay – An extension of the first song. Jack and Ellie are suffering through a separation hoping that the payoff at the end will be worth it.

I Fall to Pieces by Patsy Cline – Ellie is a huge fan of classic country, especially Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Considering her horrible history with men, is it any surprise she relates to songs about women wronged by their men?

Time to Pretend by MGMT – There are lots of people pretending in this book, playing a role. This song works for multiple characters, Jack, Ellie, Eddie, Julie, Fred.

Long Road to Ruin by Foo Fighters – If I told you who this song represented it might be a spoiler, so I’ll let you read The Fisher King and figure it out.

Kiss with a Fist by Florence and the Machine – One thing I only got a chance to touch on in this book is family history and how it shapes us, and people’s perception of us. Brian Grant comes from a long line of abusers and most of the town thinks he’s one as well. Whether or not he is or isn’t, so many times perception is reality. On the other hand, the McBride brothers are known for their temper as well.

Battleflag by Pigeonhead (EXPLICIT) – Eddie’s song. All the way. His theme music.

What She Came For by Franz Ferdinand – Oh, Julie. I’m sorry everyone hates you so much. I tried to give you some shading, but it’s tough to make a woman who left her family on her son’s birthday sympathetic.

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac This is all about where Ellie & Kelly’s relationship is at the end of the book.

Fire Woman by The Cult – I couldn’t end the playlist on a slow song. This is Ellie’s song, though the lyric, ‘Fire woman, you’re to blame’ doesn’t fit her character. Or does it? You’ll have to read The Fisher King to find out!

 Book Excerpt:

“I know I shouldn’t have gotten attached to you, but I have. I think I love you, Adam.”

He spun back around just staring at me. I hadn’t seen that look on his face before or have a clue what it meant. It was somewhere between shock and sadness and…I didn’t know. I could feel my heart breaking into tiny pieces as he stared at me for what felt like forever.

“What did you just say?”

I panicked. “Forget it.” I started to step back, wishing I hadn’t said anything when his hands gripped my face and he kissed me, long and deep. My hands reached up to his face feeling the contours and faint stubble tickling my fingers as my heart beat out of control. I was in too deep, wrapping my arms around his neck and hoping to never let go. My whole body shook as I pressed against him, falling deeper into the kiss, our first real kiss.

Even in my wildest dreams, I’d never imagined it would be this perfect. The little fissures of my aching heart slowly mended with his lips pressed against mine. My breath was erratic, but I’d never felt so alive. My heart was bursting, never having felt so full.

Synopsis:

Prequel to the New York Times bestselling and award-winning novel, FORGET TOMORROW!

In a world where all seventeen-year-olds receive a memory from their future selves, Logan Russell’s vision is exactly as he expects — and exactly not. He sees himself achieving his greatest wish of becoming a gold-star swimmer, but strangely enough, the vision also shows him locking eyes with a girl from his past, Callie Stone, and experiencing an overwhelming sense of love and belonging.

Logan’s not sure what the memory means, but soon enough, he learns that his old friend Callie is in trouble. She’s received an atypical memory, one where she commits a crime in the future. According to the law, she must be imprisoned, even though she’s done nothing wrong. Now, Logan must decide if he’ll give up his future as a gold-star swimmer and rescue the literal girl of his dreams. All he’ll have to do is defy Fate.

beforetomorrow

Excerpt:

He could see her now, and it made him want to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness. If he had known, he never would’ve let her come.

Her face was pale, so pale, and her eyes stood out like stars in the black sky. But they weren’t lustrous stars full of verve and sparkle; no, her stars were the ones at the end of their lives, the ones in danger of blinking out. Her bones looked fragile, her skin was as thin as parchment paper. Bruises decorated her arm like the latest fashion trends. In a mere week, she looked like this. In a week, she had transformed from a girl to an apparition.

His heart shook, and shame flooded him. I’m sorry, Callie. So sorry. I didn’t know. I thought this was what you wanted. I thought I was doing the right thing.

He hadn’t known—but he should’ve. He was the one with the connection to the Underground. The one with access to information other people didn’t have. He should’ve known, and he should’ve stopped her.

But then, so quickly he barely registered it, she crossed the floor and laid her hand on his chest. He blinked—and then blinked again. What was she doing? They had to get out of here.

“You feel amazing,” she said, oblivious to the urgency. She didn’t sound like herself, either. What was going on? And then she shuffled forward until their shoes were touching. He inhaled sharply and forgot everything else. The touch was nothing. He knew that. Synthetic rubber against synthetic rubber. But now they were connected in two spots. Everything inside him sizzled and popped. If she touched him anywhere else, he might explode.

She seemed determined to try. She trailed her hand across his chest, over his shoulders, up, up, up to his face. And then, she rubbed her fingers back and forth, and the breath shot out of him. He’d never felt anything so sweet, so exquisite. It felt so good it almost hurt. No, it did hurt, but if this were pain, he’d go to Limbo for an eternity.

Her fingers skipped to his lips—and he couldn’t take it anymore. His body broke free from the force that was paralyzing him. He could either grab her and kiss her senseless—or he could put a stop to this and get on with the mission.

He struggled. Oh, how he struggled and damned Fate to the moon and back. Every fiber in his body screamed, Do it! Kiss her now! And if they were anywhere else, if it were any other time, he would’ve.

But he couldn’t forget the bruises on her body. If he didn’t break her out now, he’d never be able to live with himself.

He reached up and covered her hand with his trembling fingers. Fate help him, if he was going to end this moment, he wanted at least one touch of his hand against hers. Something for him to remember during his sleepless nights.

He moved her hand from his lips, and it felt like he was dragging it through wet concrete. “I can’t believe I’m saying this,” he said hoarsely, “but we don’t have much time.”

Her eyes snapped into focus, and everything about her features sharpened. “You’re real?”

Songs of Seraphina
by Jude Houghton
Publication date: June 30th 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Synopsis:

Some battles bleed so much, and for so long, that the earth never truly forgets their dead. Some battles are born of oppression, and some of greed, and some simply because it was written in the stars.

Three sisters—Charlemagne, Cairo and Pendragon Agonistes—are sent from America to England to live with their eccentric grandparents after their mother disappears and their father falls to pieces. But before the girls have time to find their feet, Charlemagne is married off to a dead man, Penny takes a nap and wakes up as a boy, and Cairo is swept into a dangerous romance with a man who wants her for more than her considerable charm. With the girls wrapped up in a conflict they barely understand, they don’t notice that their grandmother is transforming, or that the two demigod assassins who took their mother are now coming for them—if one of them can get over his crisis of conscience.

In this richly painted tale, at whose heart is the unbreakable bond of family and blood, the world of Seraphina collides with our own as three unique girls are dragged into twilight lives past, fighting for vengeance, retribution, and the survival of their exiled people.

Guest Post by Jude Houghton

Advice for the inspiring author.

Writing is difficult. There is no way around that fact. Every time I sit down to write, I am reminded of how tough it is. Tough to find the time – away from a real a job and in many cases, the family – tough to have the conviction that what you are doing is worthwhile, and tough to put something on the page that doesn’t make you cringe five minutes after writing it. Here are some things that capture my process, and make it just a little easier.

Stephen King, in On Writing, challenges the would be writer to do just two things. Read a lot. Write a lot. You cannot write without doing both of those things. He suggests 1,000 words a day. 1,000 words a day delivers a first draft in three-four months. It’s not easy to deliver on that commitment but hey…I began by saying writing was tough.

Some of the time when you write, it’s a whirlwind, it comes easily, it’s “buckle your seatbelt Dorothy because Kansas is going bye-bye.” Then, there are the times when the characters stop talking to you, and the hitherto promising plot fizzles on the page. The danger is running into an extended period of writer’s block. Margaret Atwood has the best answer to this. Hold your hand in the air and do not put it down again until you have a sentence to write. Then see how long the block lasts. Once the ache sets in, it’s never long, believe me.

I saw an interview with Terry Pratchett towards the end of his life. He was talking about the difficulty of writing, and he said that the thing you have to realize is that a good idea is the easy part, that translating that idea to the page and making it come alive is the challenge, and as a writer, it shouldn’t be easy, and you have to confront that head on, every time. Ideas are like tinsel, anyone can have an idea, it’s what you do with it that’s the important thing.

And finally, often I find my head with characters, plot jumbled, trying to remember what someone said, or who did what to whom. This I guess is my piece of advice. Expect that, and don’t let it frustrate you, and power on. It will come. As one of Raymond Chandler’s characters said, My head is as fluffy as whipped cream, but not as sweet. I think that just about sums up how I feel most days. I try to get over it.

Cease & Desist Review

Image

cease-and-desist-tour-banner

Cease & Desist
Genre: YA Thriller
Release Date: October 10th 2016

Summary from Goodreads

ceaseanddesist_cvr_front_hi_aWhat if the secret to being charismatic were actually a gene you could inherit, and pass along to your children. What if this “X-factor” could make you a star?

Welcome to the world of Cease de Menich, a sixteen-year-old actress in New York City who gets cast as Joan-of-Arc in a reality-drama, only to discover her “acting gift” has been passed down through her bloodline for almost six-hundred-years. Cease finds the plot of the drama reveals dark secrets from her past–an abusive mother, a brother who committed suicide–and the reader must decide if she’s a reliable narrator or a terrified girl who’s succumb to the pressure of fame and the abuse of her past.

Cease & Desist is a dark, contemporary YA thriller with a supernatural twist. Readers of books like I Let You Go and The Girl on the Train will enjoy this coming-of-age story, which struggles with the realities of sexuality, violence as entertainment, and mental illness. Cease & Desist has excellent crossover potential into the adult marketplace.

My Review

There are a lot of different layers in this book. Cease & Desist has a mix of thriller and corruption created for the entertainment of the masses. I honestly was confused on how the spectrum of the reality show worked at first but was very determined to find out what happened next.

Cease de Menich is a young actress cast as Jeanne d’Arc, not Joan as she sternly instructs, in a reality drama show. Different from the other girls with her looks and station in life, she struggles with the challenging and chaotic structure between her ‘reality’. I enjoyed the overall plot of this book. It’s definitely different from anything I’ve ever read. While the narrative can be confusing and jumbled sometimes, Cease comes to life in her perspective.

As Cease goes through her daily life, she discovers truths about her own family. This book had some dark moments and very notable awareness into growing up with dangers, peer pressure, and abuse. It also touches on the media’s overwhelming expectation that violence and sex need to be included to be entertained. My recommendation is to not get to hung up on the timeline of the plot since Cease’s thoughts can be a bit scattered. Once you get into it though, it’s really hard to put down.
