Synopsis

When the dust settles in this Texas town, who will be left standing?

It’s been six weeks since Jack McBride’s life went to hell: the resolution of his first case as chief sparked a countywide drug war, his brother Eddie rode into town with a pocket full of cocaine and trouble on his mind, his estranged wife returned from her one-year sabbatical determined to win him back, and Ellie Martin ended their brief affair.

To the Stillwater natives, the increase in local crime can be traced directly back to the day the outsider McBride took the job, and they’re gunning to get rid of him. One particular group is led by Joe Doyle, a successful local businessman who’s running for city council against Ellie and her plan to revitalize
downtown. Now Jack has discovered proof Doyle is the biggest crime lord in the county, and, with murders piling up and the drug war intensifying, Jack suspects the crimes aren’t business, but personal—and he’s the target.

The bitter election and Jack’s investigation spark old rivalries and new jealousies, making Ellie and those who love Stillwater most wonder if it’s even worth saving.

PRAISE FOR THE FISHER KING:

A fast-moving whodunit with compelling subplots and an appealing protagonist who’s likely to keep winning fans.” — Booklist

“The Fisher King is a haunting novel about different people’s claims on a place, and the power struggles, violence, and deception they use to seize it. Dark and ominous, the novel strikes the perfect mood and will be sure to appeal to fans eager for more of McBride’s adventures.” — Foreward Magazine

“[T]his combination of police procedural and romance puts the pedal to the metal and revs up the action.” — Kirkus Reviews

“Melissa Lenhardt’s Jack McBride is a complex and fallible protagonist you will root for. In The Fisher King, McBride takes on small town greed and corruption to his own peril in this sexy, gritty, and gripping thriller. A terrific new series!” —Deborah Crombie, New York Times bestselling author of the Duncan Kincaid and Gemma Jones series

“Lenhardt draws you so deep into Stillwater, Texas, you’ll think you live there and know everyone in town. In-depth characters, finely drawn descriptions, and a sure-fire plot make The Fisher King a very satisfying addition to the Texas crime fiction scene.” —Terry Shames, Macavity Award Winning author of The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake

“Melissa Lenhardt’s second Jack McBride novel, The Fisher King, is a terrific soap opera of an East Texas noir. A riveting tale of disgrace, betrayal, and redemption. . . . Lenhardt writes a hard story with a soft hand. Evocatively descriptive and painfully believable, The Fisher King is Peyton Place meets The Godfather in small-town Texas. Top notch.” —James W. Ziskin, author of the Ellie Stone series”

THE FISHER KING SOUNDTRACK

One question I get asked quite often, by other writers especially, is if I listen to music when I write. The answer is yes and no. I don’t have to listen to music when I write, but sometimes I’m in the mood to listen to music, so I do. I definitely cannot listen to the Hamilton Soundtrack when I write because I’m so distracted by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s brilliant writing and the story that he’s telling that I get nothing done. Occasionally, I’ll listen to music I think my character would like to try to get in their headspace. But, generally, music isn’t required for me to get words on the page.

What I love doing, however, is making a soundtrack for my books. I created one for Stillwater—I’m pretty sure creating it was a procrastination tool—and when I finished The Fisher King, I wanted to create one for it. There is so much going on in this book, so many different moods, and the playlist reflects that. You have classic country for Ellie’s frame of mind, a gritty rock song for Eddie, Florence and the Machine for Susan and Brian, and some Coldplay for Jack. Bet you didn’t know that Jack liked Coldplay. Don’t hold it against him.

Numb by Airborne Toxic Event – Can’t think of a more appropriate summation of where Jack and Ellie are at the beginning of the book.

Hurts Like Heaven by Coldplay – An extension of the first song. Jack and Ellie are suffering through a separation hoping that the payoff at the end will be worth it.

I Fall to Pieces by Patsy Cline – Ellie is a huge fan of classic country, especially Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Considering her horrible history with men, is it any surprise she relates to songs about women wronged by their men?

Time to Pretend by MGMT – There are lots of people pretending in this book, playing a role. This song works for multiple characters, Jack, Ellie, Eddie, Julie, Fred.

Long Road to Ruin by Foo Fighters – If I told you who this song represented it might be a spoiler, so I’ll let you read The Fisher King and figure it out.

Kiss with a Fist by Florence and the Machine – One thing I only got a chance to touch on in this book is family history and how it shapes us, and people’s perception of us. Brian Grant comes from a long line of abusers and most of the town thinks he’s one as well. Whether or not he is or isn’t, so many times perception is reality. On the other hand, the McBride brothers are known for their temper as well.

Battleflag by Pigeonhead (EXPLICIT) – Eddie’s song. All the way. His theme music.

What She Came For by Franz Ferdinand – Oh, Julie. I’m sorry everyone hates you so much. I tried to give you some shading, but it’s tough to make a woman who left her family on her son’s birthday sympathetic.

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac This is all about where Ellie & Kelly’s relationship is at the end of the book.

Fire Woman by The Cult – I couldn’t end the playlist on a slow song. This is Ellie’s song, though the lyric, ‘Fire woman, you’re to blame’ doesn’t fit her character. Or does it? You’ll have to read The Fisher King to find out!

 Ava Wood
Genre: YA Romance
Release Date: October 28th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

Missy Shaw thought she had her life planned out perfectly; do well in school, take her basketball team to state, and get a free ride to college. Her life wasn’t perfect, but it was constant. With her best friend Karley at her side, she could handle anything.

After the death of her mother, however, her dad had other plans. Moving Missy from everything she knew in Kansas to the great unknown created a new set of problems. Attending a new school, all she really wanted was to be invisible, but that simple feat proved difficult when she had a run-in with the school’s basketball star, Adam Miller, on her very first day.

Adam is every girl’s dream; charming, sweet, and gorgeous. And for some reason, he’s very interested in Missy. His attentiveness is unnerving as Missy does everything in her power to evade his interest. Living with secrets she’s not willing to share, Missy works to push Adam away in order to keep her family safe. But will keeping secrets really keep her safe?

 Book Excerpt:

“I know I shouldn’t have gotten attached to you, but I have. I think I love you, Adam.”

He spun back around just staring at me. I hadn’t seen that look on his face before or have a clue what it meant. It was somewhere between shock and sadness and…I didn’t know. I could feel my heart breaking into tiny pieces as he stared at me for what felt like forever.

“What did you just say?”

I panicked. “Forget it.” I started to step back, wishing I hadn’t said anything when his hands gripped my face and he kissed me, long and deep. My hands reached up to his face feeling the contours and faint stubble tickling my fingers as my heart beat out of control. I was in too deep, wrapping my arms around his neck and hoping to never let go. My whole body shook as I pressed against him, falling deeper into the kiss, our first real kiss.

Even in my wildest dreams, I’d never imagined it would be this perfect. The little fissures of my aching heart slowly mended with his lips pressed against mine. My breath was erratic, but I’d never felt so alive. My heart was bursting, never having felt so full.

beforetomorrow

Excerpt:

He could see her now, and it made him want to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness. If he had known, he never would’ve let her come.

Her face was pale, so pale, and her eyes stood out like stars in the black sky. But they weren’t lustrous stars full of verve and sparkle; no, her stars were the ones at the end of their lives, the ones in danger of blinking out. Her bones looked fragile, her skin was as thin as parchment paper. Bruises decorated her arm like the latest fashion trends. In a mere week, she looked like this. In a week, she had transformed from a girl to an apparition.

His heart shook, and shame flooded him. I’m sorry, Callie. So sorry. I didn’t know. I thought this was what you wanted. I thought I was doing the right thing.

He hadn’t known—but he should’ve. He was the one with the connection to the Underground. The one with access to information other people didn’t have. He should’ve known, and he should’ve stopped her.

But then, so quickly he barely registered it, she crossed the floor and laid her hand on his chest. He blinked—and then blinked again. What was she doing? They had to get out of here.

“You feel amazing,” she said, oblivious to the urgency. She didn’t sound like herself, either. What was going on? And then she shuffled forward until their shoes were touching. He inhaled sharply and forgot everything else. The touch was nothing. He knew that. Synthetic rubber against synthetic rubber. But now they were connected in two spots. Everything inside him sizzled and popped. If she touched him anywhere else, he might explode.

She seemed determined to try. She trailed her hand across his chest, over his shoulders, up, up, up to his face. And then, she rubbed her fingers back and forth, and the breath shot out of him. He’d never felt anything so sweet, so exquisite. It felt so good it almost hurt. No, it did hurt, but if this were pain, he’d go to Limbo for an eternity.

Her fingers skipped to his lips—and he couldn’t take it anymore. His body broke free from the force that was paralyzing him. He could either grab her and kiss her senseless—or he could put a stop to this and get on with the mission.

He struggled. Oh, how he struggled and damned Fate to the moon and back. Every fiber in his body screamed, Do it! Kiss her now! And if they were anywhere else, if it were any other time, he would’ve.

But he couldn’t forget the bruises on her body. If he didn’t break her out now, he’d never be able to live with himself.

He reached up and covered her hand with his trembling fingers. Fate help him, if he was going to end this moment, he wanted at least one touch of his hand against hers. Something for him to remember during his sleepless nights.

He moved her hand from his lips, and it felt like he was dragging it through wet concrete. “I can’t believe I’m saying this,” he said hoarsely, “but we don’t have much time.”

Her eyes snapped into focus, and everything about her features sharpened. “You’re real?”

Book & Author Details:
Songs of Seraphina
by Jude Houghton
Publication date: June 30th 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Synopsis:

Some battles bleed so much, and for so long, that the earth never truly forgets their dead. Some battles are born of oppression, and some of greed, and some simply because it was written in the stars.

Three sisters—Charlemagne, Cairo and Pendragon Agonistes—are sent from America to England to live with their eccentric grandparents after their mother disappears and their father falls to pieces. But before the girls have time to find their feet, Charlemagne is married off to a dead man, Penny takes a nap and wakes up as a boy, and Cairo is swept into a dangerous romance with a man who wants her for more than her considerable charm. With the girls wrapped up in a conflict they barely understand, they don’t notice that their grandmother is transforming, or that the two demigod assassins who took their mother are now coming for them—if one of them can get over his crisis of conscience.

In this richly painted tale, at whose heart is the unbreakable bond of family and blood, the world of Seraphina collides with our own as three unique girls are dragged into twilight lives past, fighting for vengeance, retribution, and the survival of their exiled people.

Guest Post by Jude Houghton

Advice for the inspiring author.

Writing is difficult. There is no way around that fact. Every time I sit down to write, I am reminded of how tough it is. Tough to find the time – away from a real a job and in many cases, the family – tough to have the conviction that what you are doing is worthwhile, and tough to put something on the page that doesn’t make you cringe five minutes after writing it. Here are some things that capture my process, and make it just a little easier.

Stephen King, in On Writing, challenges the would be writer to do just two things. Read a lot. Write a lot. You cannot write without doing both of those things. He suggests 1,000 words a day. 1,000 words a day delivers a first draft in three-four months. It’s not easy to deliver on that commitment but hey…I began by saying writing was tough.

Some of the time when you write, it’s a whirlwind, it comes easily, it’s “buckle your seatbelt Dorothy because Kansas is going bye-bye.” Then, there are the times when the characters stop talking to you, and the hitherto promising plot fizzles on the page. The danger is running into an extended period of writer’s block. Margaret Atwood has the best answer to this. Hold your hand in the air and do not put it down again until you have a sentence to write. Then see how long the block lasts. Once the ache sets in, it’s never long, believe me.

I saw an interview with Terry Pratchett towards the end of his life. He was talking about the difficulty of writing, and he said that the thing you have to realize is that a good idea is the easy part, that translating that idea to the page and making it come alive is the challenge, and as a writer, it shouldn’t be easy, and you have to confront that head on, every time. Ideas are like tinsel, anyone can have an idea, it’s what you do with it that’s the important thing.

And finally, often I find my head with characters, plot jumbled, trying to remember what someone said, or who did what to whom. This I guess is my piece of advice. Expect that, and don’t let it frustrate you, and power on. It will come. As one of Raymond Chandler’s characters said, My head is as fluffy as whipped cream, but not as sweet. I think that just about sums up how I feel most days. I try to get over it.

Cease & Desist Review

Image

cease-and-desist-tour-banner

Cease & Desist
Genre: YA Thriller
Release Date: October 10th 2016

Summary from Goodreads

ceaseanddesist_cvr_front_hi_aWhat if the secret to being charismatic were actually a gene you could inherit, and pass along to your children. What if this “X-factor” could make you a star?

Welcome to the world of Cease de Menich, a sixteen-year-old actress in New York City who gets cast as Joan-of-Arc in a reality-drama, only to discover her “acting gift” has been passed down through her bloodline for almost six-hundred-years. Cease finds the plot of the drama reveals dark secrets from her past–an abusive mother, a brother who committed suicide–and the reader must decide if she’s a reliable narrator or a terrified girl who’s succumb to the pressure of fame and the abuse of her past.

Cease & Desist is a dark, contemporary YA thriller with a supernatural twist. Readers of books like I Let You Go and The Girl on the Train will enjoy this coming-of-age story, which struggles with the realities of sexuality, violence as entertainment, and mental illness. Cease & Desist has excellent crossover potential into the adult marketplace.

My Review

There are a lot of different layers in this book. Cease & Desist has a mix of thriller and corruption created for the entertainment of the masses. I honestly was confused on how the spectrum of the reality show worked at first but was very determined to find out what happened next.

Cease de Menich is a young actress cast as Jeanne d’Arc, not Joan as she sternly instructs, in a reality drama show. Different from the other girls with her looks and station in life, she struggles with the challenging and chaotic structure between her ‘reality’. I enjoyed the overall plot of this book. It’s definitely different from anything I’ve ever read. While the narrative can be confusing and jumbled sometimes, Cease comes to life in her perspective.

As Cease goes through her daily life, she discovers truths about her own family. This book had some dark moments and very notable awareness into growing up with dangers, peer pressure, and abuse. It also touches on the media’s overwhelming expectation that violence and sex need to be included to be entertained. My recommendation is to not get to hung up on the timeline of the plot since Cease’s thoughts can be a bit scattered. Once you get into it though, it’s really hard to put down.

A Criminal Magic
Lee Kelly
Publication date: February 2nd 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Historical, Young Adult

THE NIGHT CIRCUS meets THE PEAKY BLINDERS in Lee Kelly’s new crossover fantasy novel.

Magic is powerful, dangerous and addictive – and after passage of the 18th Amendment, it is finally illegal.

It’s 1926 in Washington, DC, and while Anti-Sorcery activists have achieved the Prohibition of sorcery, the city’s magic underworld is booming. Sorcerers cast illusions to aid mobsters’ crime sprees. Smugglers funnel magic contraband in from overseas. Gangs have established secret performance venues where patrons can lose themselves in magic, and take a mind-bending, intoxicating elixir known as the sorcerer’s shine.

Joan Kendrick, a young sorcerer from Norfolk County, Virginia accepts an offer to work for DC’s most notorious crime syndicate, the Shaw Gang, when her family’s home is repossessed. Alex Danfrey, a first-year Federal Prohibition Unit trainee with a complicated past and talents of his own, becomes tapped to go undercover and infiltrate the Shaws.

Through different paths, Joan and Alex tread deep into the violent, dangerous world of criminal magic – and when their paths cross at the Shaws’ performance venue, despite their orders, and despite themselves, Joan and Alex become enchanted with one another. But when gang alliances begin to shift, the two sorcerers are forced to question their ultimate allegiances and motivations. And soon, Joan and Alex find themselves pitted against each other in a treacherous, heady game of cat-and-mouse.

A CRIMINAL MAGIC casts a spell of magic, high stakes and intrigue against the backdrop of a very different Roaring Twenties.

Lee Kelly

A CRIMINAL MAGIC

TOP TEN PLAYLIST

There’s nothing like music to set a mood, or transport you to a specific place and time. But I have to admit, I was never a big fan of playing music while writing: I used to get distracted, and focused on the words of the song instead of my own.

But something about drafting A CRIMINAL MAGIC changed this. It was almost like the scenes in the Shaw Gang’s “magic haven” demanded music, like I couldn’t write without jumpy jazz or haunting instrumental playing in the background. And now, I’m a playlist convert .

My playlist for A CRIMINAL MAGIC has some classic Twenties numbers, but also some anachronistic selections that I think capture the spirit of the story and set its tone. Without further ado, here’s my soundtrack:

BESSIE SMITH, Me and My Gin

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE, Seven Devils

(shout-out to the talented Claribel Ortega for this selection! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA3PVK6bliM&feature=youtu.be)

GENE AUSTIN, Bye Bye Blackbird

ENNIO MORRICONE, The Strength of the Righteous Man

CARO EMERALD, The Lipstick on his Collar

BJORK, Venus as a Boy

INXS, Need You Tonight

JACK WHITE, Love is Blindness

(this was featured in Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby movie and BBC’s period drama, The Peaky Blinders I thought it was essential to include 🙂

THE WHITE STRIPES, The Hardest Button to Button

LANA DEL REY, Blue Jeans

“Each story is a pleasure!” —Linda LaRue Austin, writer, historian, and author of Midnight Amethyst

Excerpt

Excerpt from “Masquerade,” from Twelve Tantalizingly Twisted Tales, a spooky middle-grade reader by David C. Hughes, illustrated by Christina Evans.

“So what’s up, bro?” Sam dug into his coat pocket and pulled out another bar of soap as they trekked through the woods toward the bus garage. He offered it to Reginald, but his younger brother shook his head. Sam dropped the soap back into his pocket. He thought his brother would’ve been more excited about the prospect of soaping up the school busses, especially good ol’ number 111. Sam had loved riding that bus when he was in elementary school. He sighed. For some reason his brother had shrunk into a world of his own tonight, more than usual. “Cat got your tongue?”

“Naw,” Reginald said. “I think I got its tongue instead.”

Sam chuckled. Reginald’s magic skills were improving nicely. He only wished his confidence would catch up to his talents. “Yep, that was pretty funny what you did with that rubber mouse, bro,” he said. “I’ve never seen a cat jump so high before. Seriously, though,” Sam prodded. “You okay? I thought calling in that colony of bats and swooping them at the cars on Main Street would make your night. I mean, did you see the look on Mrs. Lance’s face when she drove by? That’ll teach her to keep her windows rolled down on cold nights like this. I think one of them grabbed the cigarette right out of her hand! That was awesome stuff.”

Reginald nodded but didn’t look up. “Yeah, it was great. I mean, really cool.”

Sam frowned. Reginald was definitely not himself tonight. “Okay, spit it out,” he said. “Something happened at school today.”

Reginald sighed. “They got me again.”

Sam stopped. His heart fell. He put an arm around his brother. “Who? That bully? What’s his name . . . Roger Morris?”

“And Jerry Bartholomew. Pelted me with eggs this time. I washed up before you guys got home.”

“Why didn’t you tell Mom and Dad?”

Reginald shrugged.

“You need to tell them, bro. I mean, truly.”

“Why?” his little brother finally looked up at him. Moonlight glistened from the tears running down his face. “It won’t do any good.” He wiped his nose on his sleeve.

Sam put his hands on Reginald’s shoulders and squinted. “Why won’t it?”

“Because Mom and Dad need us to blend in,” Reginald moaned. “Remember?”

Sam grimaced. “That doesn’t mean we can’t defend ourselves.”

“I know,” said Reginald, “but I figure it’s easier this way.”

“Easier? To just take it? It doesn’t look like it’s easier to me. Cripes, Reggie. We’ve been ‘just taking it’ since we got here, and look where it’s gotten us. Jeez.”

Reginald gave his brother a half-hearted smile. “I’m happy.”

“Are you?”

“Sure . . . for the most part, I really am.”

Sam started toward the bus garage again. He felt for his brother. Yeah, he was odd, but in a good sort of way, always with his nose buried in a book, living in his own world, a world far away from their own. He played the part well. Maybe too well. He resolved to talk to his parents about his brother, but in the meantime Devil’s Night was still young, and they still had three bars of soap left. As they approached the bus garage, an idea popped into his head. “I got it!” he blurted.

“Got what?” Reginald asked.

“Mom and Dad are always telling us to blend in, right?”

“Sure.”

“The costume parade is tomorrow night, right?”

“Yeah. So?”

“So, instead of just watching it this time, let’s blend in. Like in the old days.”

“The old days?” In the moonlight Sam saw Reginald’s face bloom. “Oh . . . like in the old, old days.” He smiled. “Yeah. . . .” He looked at his brother. “Yeah! That’d be awesome.”

Sam laughed, and for the first time that night, Reginald joined him.

Book Title: Remember Yesterday (Forget Tomorrow, #2)

Author:  Pintip Dunn

Release Date: October 4, 2016

Genre: YA Sci Fi

Publisher: Entangled Teen

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Jessa Stone is the most valuable citizen in Eden City. Her psychic abilities could lead to significant scientific discoveries, if only she’d let TechRA study her. But ten years ago, the scientists kidnapped and experimented on her, leading to severe ramifications for her sister, Callie. She’d much rather break into their labs and sabotage their research—starting with Tanner Callahan, budding scientist and the boy she loathes most at school.

The past isn’t what she assumed, though—and neither is Tanner. He’s not the arrogant jerk she thought he was. And his research opens the door to the possibility that Jessa can rectify a fatal mistake made ten years earlier. She’ll do anything to change the past and save her sister—even if it means teaming up with the enemy she swore to defeat.

OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES:

Synopsis:

Imagine a world where your destiny has already been decided…by your future self.

It’s Callie’s seventeenth birthday and, like everyone else, she’s eagerly awaiting her vision―a memory sent back in time to sculpt each citizen into the person they’re meant to be. A world-class swimmer. A renowned scientist.

Or in Callie’s case, a criminal.

In her vision, she sees herself murdering her gifted younger sister. Before she can process what it means, Callie is arrested and placed in Limbo―a prison for those destined to break the law. With the help of her childhood crush, Logan, a boy she hasn’t spoken to in five years, she escapes the hellish prison.

But on the run from her future, as well as the government, Callie sets in motion a chain of events that she hopes will change her fate. If not, she must figure out how to protect her sister from the biggest threat of all.

Callie herself.

The top 10 authors that influenced or inspired my writing

by Pintip Dunn

  1. Louisa May Alcott. I read LITTLE WOMEN as a kid, and this was the first time I wanted to rewrite the ending of a book! Cleary, Jo should have ended up with Laurie!

  1. L.M. Montgomery. Ah, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES. I was passionately in love with this series, and Gilbert Blythe was my very first book boyfriend (although I didn’t know what that was at the time).

  1. Ernest Hemingway. I studied English literature in college, and my next three entries are the authors who had the most profound impact on me and my writing during this time. Hemingway taught me about white space, dialogue, and using grammar as a way to emphasize and reinforce story structure.

  1. Gertrude Stein taught me that you can be as creative with sentence structure and syntax as you are with story. The rules are there for a reason, but once you understand them, they can — and should — be broken.

  1. Jane Austen. I used to read all of her books, every year, for a number of years. She is brilliant not only in her writing and social observation, but also in evoking deep emotion in the reader.

  1. Orson Scott Card. I’ve read nearly all of his science fiction books, starting with ENDER’S GAME. He was probably the author who created and cemented my love of science fiction.

  1. Suzanne Collins. THE HUNGER GAMES changed my life. Literally. It was the first time I was introduced to the YA genre, and as soon as I read that book, I knew I had found my home.

  1.  Stephenie Meyer. THE HOST is 800 pages long. I started crying on page 200 and didn’t stop for 600 more pages. The book showed me the kind of story I wanted to write: a super cool science-fiction world, but with heart.

  1. Gillian Flynn. I’d read lots of other thrillers/mystery/suspense before, but GONE GIRL made me actually want to write it.

  1. J.K. Rowling. What list can be complete without HARRY POTTER? I once answered a question of which book I would save out of a burning library with this series. Harry has been such an influence in all of our lives, including my daughter’s. I think J.K. Rowling taught me that creativity is limitless, and it made me understand that I never outgrew stories for children — and I hope I never will.
