Here are a couple of sneak peeks!

Ambassador 1: Seeing Red
I had never been on first-name terms with the president, but while I sat there trying hard not to succumb to jet-lag, he chatted about my father, whom I had just visited, and who had finally retired from Lunar Base to his native New Zealand. Sirkonen opened the drawer of his desk and took something out, which he flipped across the gleaming wooden surface. I could do nothing but catch it. A datastick. I turned it over. The black plastic cover reflected the sunlight.

“What’s on it?”

“You might find it useful. Think of it as some . . . personal advice, from me to you. We’ll talk about it later, when you return for your first briefing.” He shut the drawer with a thud as if closing the subject.

This was highly irregular. “Mr President, can I ask—”

He shook his head, and offered me a drink—Finnish vodka, best in the world, he said. While he poured, his hands trembled.

I should have insisted that he tell me what was wrong, but who was I? An unimportant, sending-out-our-feelers type of diplomat, expendable and twenty years his junior. Not the type of person to draw attention to his problems—with alcohol or otherwise.

We made a toast. The heavy scent of the vodka did nothing to improve my alertness.

“Mr Wilson, when you come back in six month’s time, you must present your report to the general assembly. We need to know in detail what sort of regimes we’re dealing with.”

I didn’t understand why he spoke in such empty generalities; I wondered when he was going to open that folder on his desk and sign the contract. Nicha, my Coldi assistant, was waiting in the foyer. We had a whole heap of work to catch up on. I was annoyed that Sirkonen had changed our meeting time at the last minute—the original meeting had been scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Sirkonen stopped speaking.

I stared at him, realising with embarrassment that I’d been off with the fairies. Was I meant to have said something? Was I breaking rule number one of the diplomatic circle: never show any sign of sleep deprivation?

An attack of dizziness overtook me. My vision wavered, as if the world were painted on a silk flag that flapped in the wind, and all the furniture was rimmed in a red aura. “Mr President, I’m—”

I just managed to put my vodka down. The glass hit the wood with a soft clunk, the only sound in the frozen silence.

There was a small sound from outside, a click.

As if stung, Sirkonen turned to the window; his eyes widened.

“Sir?”

The president opened his mouth, but a sharp crack interrupted his words.

Releasing Rage
She stepped into the firewall square. The door behind her closed and she authorized the interior door to open.

A buzz swept over her. No, not simply over her. Into her. She gasped, her inhalation of air drawing more of this unknown presence inside her.

It was too much, almost suffocating. Joan swayed, lightheaded. “Do not faint. Do not faint,” she repeated to herself, closing her eyes.

The rolling under her feet gradually stopped. She opened her eyes and wished she hadn’t. Crimson spray covered everywhere she looked. Gore was splattered into the farthest corners, hanging from the ceiling. Cleaner bots scrubbed the walls and floor.

This was why she felt dizzy, she reasoned. She smelled and sensed this butchery.

C899321, the being she had been told was responsible, stood in his uploading dock, a cable inserted into his nape, his towering form naked, covered with blood, his long black hair dripping with it.

He turned his head, locked his gaze with hers and she sucked in her breath. There were worlds of agony, of rage, in those bright blue eyes. This was no rational, logic-driven cyborg. This was a man, an animal, crazed by bloodlust and pain.

“They thought to pacify me with the use of a human female?” he thundered, his deep gravelly voice clawing across her skin, awakening parts in her she didn’t realize slept. “I’d kill you before I allowed you to touch me.”

This insult didn’t hurt her the way he’d intended. Joan knew she wasn’t the slim tiny female males desired. She was solidly built, good breeding stock, as her mother had once said.

She discarded his words and focused on the torment in his tones. He hurt. Horrifically. Her fingers twitched, the urge to reach out to him, to comfort him, tremendous. Judging by the flex of his powerful biceps and thigh muscles, by the anger radiating from him, he wouldn’t appreciate that response.

He also wouldn’t listen to any command she issued. A reprimand, verbal or physical, would add to his hostility. Some being had already tried to restrain him and failed. The reportedly unbreakable wrist and ankle cuffs attached to the frame of the uploading dock had been shattered, rendered useless.

Joan discarded four solar cycles’ worth of theory on how to handle malfunctioning cyborgs, realizing now that the academy experts knew nothing.
Her late father, however, had taught her how to deal with wild beasts.

“I would never touch you without your permission.” She lowered her gaze, showing submission, recognizing C899321 as the dominant male he was. He’d seek to harm any aggressor, to protect himself and his territory. If she wasn’t female, she suspected she’d already be dead.

“I also would never hurt you.” Joan stuffed a couple of cleaning cloths into her pockets and dropped to her knees, into a puddle of red. The moisture soaked through her flight suit. “I’m here to serve you, to clean you.”

Why do some people find success despite hardships and
others sink into a pit of despair?

Gathering Courage: A Life-Changing Journey through Adoption, Adversity, and a Reading Disability
by T.A. “Terry” McMullin is the author’s incredible, award-winning
memoir meant to inspire hope and encouragement to those who are going through tough times.

Terry dusted off the hurt from abandonment, rejection by her adoptive parents, dyslexia, shock of placement in a foster home, and a life-altering accident. Her faith and tenacity along with the internal desire to overcome is thought provoking as Terry worked her way through Texas A&M University. Terry’s life transformed from a broken-hearted child who could barely make out words in elementary school to a distinguished educator and writer who encourages young people to work hard and achieve their greatest aspirations.

Any reader who loves a true story with a Christian focus should definitely read this book. Learn about the special love for rescued animals and how they played a part in healing hurts and encouraging success.

PRAISE FOR GATHERING COURAGE:

*North American Book Awards, 2015 Winner
Gathering Courage is an American story filled with adversity, triumphs, heartbreaks, and great personal victory. . . I give this epic book five stars. I held my breath after every chapter and you will too! — Charmaine Carraway, writer for the HUFFINGTON POST
“Overall, this memoir is a testament to the endurance of the human spirit in the face of emotional and physical pain. The author consistently notes the need for love and encouragement when dealing with both people and animals as well as the necessity of prayer and thankfulness; it’s almost a rhythmic incantation in the text. Readers will feel as if they’re walking alongside McMullin as she tells her story and advises readers how they, too, can survive setbacks. — KIRKUS REVIEW
Gathering Courage is a truly moving read that will touch many hearts and positively inspire them to touch the lives of others.” — Faridah Nassozi, READERS’ FAVORITE

Review LSBBT

Gathering Courage is the recounted memories from the author Terry and how she struggled with adoption and a reading disability. Gathering Courage was difficult to read in the sense that I couldn’t believe a little girl had to endure so much. I’m a special education teacher and work with children that have varying disabilities, and it broke my heart to read about a girl struggling with a disability and what she had to bare and overcome. I think special education has since come a long way, but none the less, I couldn’t believe some of the things Terry recounted. Her struggles were so deep, so difficult to bare, that I couldn’t believe she had to endure all this alone. She went from being given up for adoption as an infant to being sent to live with another family because she had failing grades in 5th grade, to other horrific things that had happened to her. But through it all Terry had hope and kept her head up. Despite what anyone said or what others had done to her she found it within herself to forgive and love.
One thing I found most inspiring was her ability to teach herself how to read. She has dyslexia and problems with reading comprehension. Over time Terry found a way to overcome this challenge. She found a solution when no one else was there to help her. I’m always proud to see any child with special needs over come their obstacles…. but Terry did this all on her own, a fact that is beyond inspiring.
I think Terry’s recounting is definitely worth a read. The writing flowed nicely. The only complaint I had was that it often jumped around and wasn’t always written in a linear fasion. But even then I think Terry’s story is powerful and eye opening. If you are interested in reading Gathering Courage I encourage you to do so. It’s a very gripping read about personal struggles and a special kind of individual that still manages to keep her head high, endure, find hope,  forgive, and still find beauty in the world.
I included a few quotes that really stuck out to me from Gathering Courage:
“Words spoken or unspoken have the power to bring their own degree of pain.”
“Yes, I am a simple person. A simple person, however, can be extraordinary if they have the drive to succeed and the courage to press through the mud of life.”
“Forgiving can be difficult, but the hardest part is to push through the pain of hurt and mistreatment.”
“Yes, forgiveness is an ongoing process, and many times has to be applied over and over. Forgiveness is the gift we give to ourselves.”
“Sometimes, all it takes is a listening ear and a friendly smile.”
Terry is an extraordinary woman and I’m so thankful  and honored I had the privilege of reading her exceptional and inspiring story.

  about the author

author-pic-mcmullin

Award winning Gathering Courage author, T. A. “Terry” McMullin, knows as well as anyone that hard times are a part of the journey of life.

Terry was born in an orphanage, then adopted, and made a foster child by her parents.  Because Terry struggled with reading, comprehension, and spelling, she was placed in a foster home at the age of nine.  As a child in the 1960s, hardly anyone recognized the learning issues related to dyslexia. The struggle to learn continued through high school.

From her deep faith in the Lord, Terry developed an internal desire to excel, no matter the obstacle, no matter the situation. Pushing adversity and a reading disability aside, Terry enrolled in college. While attending college and working full-time, Terry taught herself how to read and study.  With pure grit and determination, Terry succeeded and earned  Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Texas A&M University.
At crucial points in her life, Terry found people who showed her unconditional love and encouragement. Terry gained gratification, emotional, and spiritual support from working with horses and dogs. The encouragement from others made Terry’s life better so she vowed to be a champion for others who needed help.
Terry lives on a small ranch in Texas, a forever home, with her horses, donkeys, and rescued border collie dogs. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

HURT
The Inspiring, Untold Story of Trauma Care
by
Catherine Musemeche, M.D.
Genre: Medicine / Medical History
Date of Publication: September 6, 2016
Publisher: ForeEdge
# of pages: 268
Synopsis

The heroic story of the invention of trauma care, from  battlefield triage to level 1 trauma centers Trauma is a disease of epidemic proportions that preys on the young, killing more Americans up to age thirty-seven than all other afflictions combined. Every year an estimated 2.8 million people are hospitalized for injuries and more than 180,000 people die.

We take for granted that no matter how or where we are injured, someone will call 911 and trained first responders will show up to insert IVs, stop the bleeding, and swiftly deliver us to a hospital staffed by doctors and nurses with the expertise necessary to save our lives. None of this happened on its own.

Told through the eyes of a surgeon who has flown on rescue helicopters, resuscitated patients in trauma centers in Houston and Chicago, and operated on hundreds of trauma victims of all ages, Hurt takes us on a tour of the advancements in injury treatment from the battlefields of the Civil War to the state-of-the-art trauma centers of today.

PRAISE FOR HURT: THE INSPIRING, UNTOLD STORY OF TRAUMA CARE

“Musemeche’s fast-paced medical history mixes the gritty reality of treating life-threatening injuries—including her own heart-pounding experiences as surgeon—with an unfettered optimism about what trauma care can now promise: an assurance that most people will survive even a devastating injury.”

—Publishers Weekly

“Hurt is a fascinating journey through the history of trauma care in this country. Musemeche’s unique ability to weave moving, personal stories with intriguing facts takes this book well beyond a great read. It is an education in the human spirit.” —Paul Ruggieri, MD, author of Confessions of a Surgeon and The Cost of Cutting

“Expanding the Golden Hour”
Guest Post
by Catherine Musemeche, M.D.

R. Adams Cowley of Maryland Shock Trauma was the first to describe “the golden hour,” the critical hour after injury during which action must be taken to save a patient’s life. Treatment of injury is time-sensitive. Patients must be treated in that first hour after injury, before they bleed out and before the body’s predetermined biological processes set the scene for shock to take hold.

But getting a patient to a hospital within that first hour is not always possible and when it’s not we need to think of ways to expand the golden hour, to give our patients their best chances of survival in the field. Nowhere has this been better demonstrated than on the battlefield, particularly in the last decade of war.

One of the best ways to expand the golden hour and buy time for a patient in the field is to stop the bleeding. Military doctors found that most combat casualties die within ten minutes of being wounded and usually from exsanguination. Tourniquets had fallen out of favor during World War II and Vietnam over concerns about choking off the blood supply to a damaged limb but they have made a comeback because of concerns over fatal hemorrhage.

The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) is a simple tourniquet that can be applied by a wounded soldier using only one hand. Applying a tourniquet before a patient goes into shock can improve survival by 90 percent. Tourniquets have been so effective in combat that the CAT is becoming part of standard civilian EMS procedure again and even some police are carrying them.

Other ways to expand the golden hour include using hemostatic bandages like QuikClot Combat Gauze, bandages impregnated with kaolin, an agent that accelerates the body’s own clotting mechanisms. There is even a way to stem suspected internal bleeding. The XStat, the “medical version of Fix-a-Flat,” is a syringe filled with small spongelike discs impregnated with a clotting agent. The syringe can be deployed into an open wound like a bullet hole in the abdomen to help tamponade internal bleeding.

These hemorrhage control measures will only buy so much time for the injured. When effective, however, they might just delay the onset of shock and expand the golden hour sufficiently to save the patient.

More on bleeding and R Adams Cowley in Chapters 6 & 7 of HURT: the inspiring, untold story of trauma care.

The Delphi Effect: 10 Inspiring Characters and Giveaway

The Delphi Effect
Rysa Walker
(The Delphi Trilogy, #1)
Published by: Skyscape
Publication date: October 11th 2016
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

In this thrilling new series from Rysa Walker, the award-winning and best-selling author of Timebound, a teen psychic is the key to stopping a government conspiracy.

It’s never wise to talk to strangers . . . and that goes double when they’re dead. Unfortunately, seventeen-year-old Anna Morgan has no choice. Resting on a park bench, touching the turnstile at the Metro station—she never knows where she’ll encounter a ghost. These mental hitchhikers are the reason Anna has been tossed from one foster home and psychiatric institution to the next for most of her life.

When a chance touch leads her to pick up the insistent spirit of a girl who was brutally murdered, Anna is pulled headlong into a deadly conspiracy that extends to the highest levels of government. Facing the forces behind her new hitcher’s death will challenge the barriers, both good and bad, that Anna has erected over the years and shed light on her power’s origins. And when the covert organization seeking to recruit her crosses the line by kidnapping her friend, it will discover just how far Anna is willing to go to bring it down.

Ten Characters (Real and Fictional) Who Influenced The Delphi Effect

When I think back through the many books, movies, and television shows that I’ve loved over the years, there are dozens–maybe even hundreds–of characters whose personalities and attributes linger in my mind. Sometimes, it’s because the character reminds me of people I’ve known in real life. Other times, it’s because some aspect of the character resonates with elements of my own personality.

So when I saw this guest post topic, I knew I’d need to narrow it down a bit, especially since there are so many historical figures I could choose from for my CHRONOS Files series.. The following characters are, therefore, ones who in some way influenced either the story or key characters in my upcoming Delphi Trilogy.

Fiver from Richard Adams’s Watership Down

This is one of my very favorite books. Adams does a wonderful job of making the characters in this bo      ok real and engaging, and that can be difficult to do when your characters are all rabbits. Fiver is the smallest of the main characters, and rather fragile due both to his size and his psychic abilities. His visions are similar to those of a character that we meet in The Delphi Effect, Jaden Park, although I’d argue that Fiver’s type of prophecy is a little more useful to those around him.

Echo from Dollhouse

I’m a huge fan of Joss Whedon’s work, but I somehow missed Dollhouse when it first aired. I finally binge watched it last year, and while I think it kind of fell apart at the very end, it occurred to me that there are some similarities between Echo and Anna. Echo is programmed with different lives as part of her work at The Dollhouse, and while she’s not supposed to keep those memories, she does end up with certain echoes (which I’m guessing is one reason for her name) from their past. Those echoes combine, in some sense, to form her personality. In much the same way, Anna’s memories from her various hitchers have shaped her, almost to the point where she’s not sure what elements of her personality are inherently her own.

Johnny Smith from Stephen King’s The Dead Zone

I love the struggle that Johnny faces as he’s deciding whether to commit an immoral act (murder) in order to stop a madman who could potentially kill millions. It’s essentially the classic question of whether one would kill Hitler, given the chance. Anna will have a similar dilemma in The Delphi Trilogy, and I’m still not sure what she’ll do when faced with that final choice.

Cole Sear from The Sixth Sense

Like Cole, the kid from the M.Night Shyamalan movie, Anna is connected to dead people. Unlike Cole, however, she doesn’t see them, aside from the occasional brief and ghostly glimpse in the mirror. They’re just passengers in her head, until she can figure out what will help them move on to whatever lies beyond.

Shawn Spencer from Psych

In Psych, one of my favorite shows from a few years back, Shawn is an exceptionally observant individual who bills himself as a psychic. As Anna mentions in The Delphi Effect, Aaro n Quinn is pretty much the reverse. He actually gets psychic vibes, but his grandfather tells clients that Aaron is just very, very observant. And unlike Shawn’s outgoing personality, Aaron prefers to stay in the background. It’s not exactly easy being in a crowd when you pick up on every impulse to “go medieval.”

Spiderman

Okay, Aaron’s not exactly like Spiderman. He can’t swing from building to building and was never bitten by a radioactive spider. But his vibes are very similar to Peter Parker’s “spidey sense,” something that Anna teases him about from time to time.

Prince

Deo, Anna’s foster brother, has a penchant for monochromatic clothing and his gender identity is definitely fluid, much like the late singer-song  writer. And he’d totally want that jacket.

Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood and Doctor Who

In the Whovian universe, Captain Jack will do the one thing that Doctor will not — he’ll kill people if he feels it must be done to prevent a greater evil. There’s a bit of Jack in Deo, although we’ll see that element of his personality a bit more clearly in the upcoming books of the trilogy.

John Casey from Chuck

Daniel Quinn, Aaron’s older brother, has a very by-the-book personality and he can be a real pain in the ass. But like NSA Agent John Casey, he’s willing to bend the rules to protect friends and family when the chips are down.

Hannibal Lecter from Thomas Harris’s The Silence of the Lambs

Graham Cregg doesn’t slurp up people’s organs with a nice chianti and fava beans, but he is somewhat similar to Hannibal in his urbane calm, even while doing some really awful things. Unlike Hannibal, however, Cregg would argue that his actions serve the greater good.

Author Bio:

Rysa Walker is the author of the bestselling CHRONOS Files series. Timebound, the first book in the series, was the Young Adult and Grand Prize winner of the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. Rysa grew up on a cattle ranch in the South, where

My Review:

Anastasia is sent to live with her grandparents to live in Cedar Falls by her mom in the hopes that a new place and new environment will be a good influence on her. The first day Anastasia arrives she meets a boy with mesmerizing eyes named Frost. It’s practically love at first sight as these two are undeniably drawn to each other. There’s trouble though in Cedar Falls as people are being attacked by some sort of animal. As Anastasia uncovers the mysterious events taking place in Cedar Falls she soon learns that Frost harbors his own secrets.

Frostbitten is an adorable, mysterious read. Frost is dazzling and perfect, hard to resist, and one that you definitely can’t help but fall in love with. Anastasia is kind and determined even though there are several odds piled against her. People in Cedar Falls aren’t very kind to her and there’s many instances that occur that place Anastasia in a situation that is unjust. Still, against it all she keeps her head high and her relationship with Frost unfolds into something purely sweet and beautiful.

One of my favorite side characters is Chloe. She’s Anastasia’s childhood friend and she’s just sweet through and through.

Overall I think Frostbitten has a lot to offer and I look forward to reading future books in the series. If you like stories with love at first sight, mystery, and werewolves than be sure to check this book out! Frost and Anastasia’s love is super cute!!!

Summary from Goodreads:

On the brink of extinction, being human means more than just surviving.

In Lib’s world, it’s dangerous to deviate from the norm. In fact, for someone who doesn’t live up to the Artificial Intelligence’s standards, it’s practically a death sentence. Lib learns this the hard way when she wakes up in a barren wasteland, with her memories erased, and only one thought lodged in her mind:

“It’s all my fault.”

Lib is a Glitch—an imperfect human component of the utopian world called the Norm. Now she’s thrown out, Lib will be forced to team up with another Glitch, Raj, and the mysterious Rogue Wolf and his clan to survive. Wolf only cares about the survival of his group, but Raj thinks they can hack the A.I. and change the Norm for the better.

Now, Lib will have to decide which path to choose—whether to go with striking loner Raj or stay with Wolf and his tight-knit group. Her heart is drawn to both, but she’s carrying a deadly secret that could jeopardize them all. Will she be able to save her newfound family and stop the A.I. before it’s too late?

Excerpt:

Wolf turns out to be tall. Taller than both me and Skye by a lot. His shoulders branch out, broad and thick, encased in a dark cloth that maybe is black or maybe is just really dark and looks black because of the dim lighting. His arms are large, shaped by ropes of thick muscle. His waist dips and then his legs are the same as his arms, thick with muscles, which are only just hinted at beneath tanned cloth that doesn’t look like cloth but more like soft skin. It’s only when I’ve made it down to the tall black he wears on his feet that I jerk my stare back up to the top of him to find his face.

A face that is surprisingly young.

His muscles and size make him seem older, larger, but softness still lingers in his face. Enough to tell me he is barely older than me.

Or barely older than Skye seems to think I am.

“Who’s this?” His deep voice washes over me in a wave that could be comforting, could be menacing. It is still too early to tell.

“Lib. Glitch just tossed. Found her outside the Norm.”

“Skye led me across the stinking, blazing hot sand. She said this is one of the better places. Places where you can still grow some things and where you can find shade and water.” The more I talk, the more Wolf’s mouth pulls down. I brush at the dirt on the cloth that covers me—the jumpsuit, Skye called it. I’m dirty, tired, hungry, thirsty, and starting to not like Wolf. He’s looking at me as if I’m trash to dump. I’m a Glitch. And I’m not like Skye.

I tear my eyes away from Wolf and glance at Skye. She stands beside him now. She’s smiling, but she shifts on her feet and reaches up with one hand to tug her hair forward over one shoulder.

Wolf’s lips tug down even more. I realize with a start that he doesn’t like me and I’m surprised to find this disappoints me. A lot. I’m not sure why; he’s not important.

“A-are you a Glitch?” I ask with a stutter.

His voice turns unfriendly, and he looks straight at Skye. “You should have left her.”

“The way you left me? Wolf, she can be useful. She helped me with the hack.” Skye spreads her hands wide.

“Helped enough to get water access?”

Skye drops her head low and stares at the ground. We stand in a hole—well, we came into this through a hole, but this place is both cool and warm. The walls seem smooth—someone made this place. Light flickers, which is odd, and I don’t understand how the light can jump as it does. It comes from a spot on the ground instead of from above, and the air smells of smoke, but it is not a bad smell. Not like a circuit burning.

That thought leaves me frowning, but before I can trace it back to where it came from, Wolf folds his arms across his broad chest, causing the muscles to stand out. “You know law, Skye. You brought a stranger into the clan.”

Skye looks up, her blue eyes going bright. “Where else will she go? She’s a Glitch and wiped, too. She saved my life—I know law about that, too. That makes her clan.”

His gaze flickers to me and then back to Skye. “Wiped? You sure?”

Skye shrugs. “She couldn’t even remember her name at first. I know wiped when I see it.”

Wolf glances at me. I want to tell him he can keep his laws and clans and I will go, but Skye’s warning that no one should be alone at night echoes in me. Skye calls it Outside—says all Outside is bad, or most of it. Rogues know how to live Outside—they use the Glitches sometimes to access the Norm and get water. And I have to find the Glitches.

Skye continues to stare up at Wolf, her lower lip pushed out now. Her eyes seem bigger and the blue in them shines in the flickering light from the ground. Wolf stares her down for a long moment, but eventually he gives a short nod. He looks at me. His eyes are darker than the world above right now.

“Law is law. For saving Skye’s life, you can share the fire.” He waves at the light on the ground. He turns and stalks down into the darkness, away from us—and from the fire.

About the Author

Ramona Finn writes about courageous characters who fight to live in broken, dystopian worlds. She believes a person’s true characters is often revealed in times of crisis, and there is no greater crisis than the worlds that she drops her characters into!

She grew up sitting cross-legged on her town’s library floor–completely engrossed in science fiction books. It was always the futuristic world or the universe-on-the-brink-of-extinction plotlines that drew her in, but it was the brave characters who chose to fight back that kept her turning the pages.

Her books create deep, intricate worlds with bold characters determined to fight for their survival in their dystopian worlds–with a little help from their friends. And, of course, romance is never out of the question 😉

PROLOGUE

I ran through the woods. My heart was beating so hard I thought it would explode out of my chest. I didn’t stop, though. I couldn’t. If I did, he’d catch me. And I wasn’t sure what he’d do to me this time. He’d already… I didn’t want to think about it. I had to keep moving.

There was a fork in the road up ahead. Which way should I go? My gut screamed left, so I went in that direction. I prayed I’d made the right decision. That this trail would lead me back to my car. If it did, I could get out of here. I’d escape him.

But what if I couldn’t?

That one sliver of doubt crippled me. Fear took over. Tears sprang to my eyes. My lungs tightened, and suddenly, it was as if I couldn’t breathe. I clutched at my throat, gasping for air that wouldn’t come. I needed to focus on something, anything, to calm myself down.

Immediately, my eyes went back to the waterfall. I zeroed in on the sound of the water pouring into the pond below. “Relax, Hannah. You need to relax,” I said to myself. “Just for five minutes, until you get out of here. Do it for Mom’s sake.” I wiped the tears off my face and counted backward from ten. When I reached the number one, my heartbeat was almost back to normal.

I took in my surroundings. It was dark and quiet. Too quiet. Even the birds had called it a night. As if they knew something I didn’t. That was when I felt it. The chill that had crept up my spine.

He was near.

I took off running. All the while, I cursed at myself. I was so stupid. To come here after hours. To hike up to that waterfall. What was I trying to prove? Something moved above my head. On instinct, I looked up and tripped over the rock in front of me. I took a nose dive to the ground, my ankle snapping on impact.

A surge of pain ripped through me. At first, it was just in my ankle. Then it shot up to my knees and into my thighs. But it didn’t stop there. It kept moving upward as if it had some sort of purpose. This was more than a break. Something else was going on. It felt like motor oil was creeping through my veins. Moving from my stomach to my chest and filling every part of my brain. I howled in agony.

A dark shadow jumped down right beside me. It was him. I jerked away, my body tensing. “Please,” I begged.

He moved toward me, his eyes finally coming into view. They were dark, impossibly so. And his mouth was covered in…blood. Mine? As he reached for me, I flinched. He snarled in response, finally showing the thing I was truly afraid of.

His fangs.

I screamed in horror just as everything went black.

But the road back to one another is treacherous and uncertain. And freedom will come with a price.

clanless-cover

Excerpt:

“I am Talon and this is my twin sister, Raca. We are traveling home to the Raven after a long journey south.”

Zo wondered if they came from the Allied Camp but didn’t want to reveal too much about her knowledge of Commander Laden and the Allies. Enemies of the cause would kill for that kind of information—especially the Ram.

The Raven girl called Raca hitched up her pack and smiled. “We usually avoid smoking fires, but I made Talon stop when I saw your group. It isn’t every day you find other women outside of the protection of a clan.”

Talon took another step forward. “We mostly just wanted to make sure you were all right.”

Zo looked to Eva, who shook her head from right to left. “No,” she mouthed, while keeping a firm hold on both of her knives. Joshua was more relaxed, looking to Zo for his cue to attack. His confidence in her was terrifying. No matter their talks of assets and liabilities; in that moment it was clear that they all saw her as their leader.

A poor decision.

Zo had no other choice but to follow her gut instinct. If these people were Raven then they needed to know about the Ram’s plans to attack their clan. “You are welcome at our fire.”

Talon and Raca relaxed and walked over to their circle.

“Tell me,” said Talon in his slow-paced Raven accent, “how do two young women, a boy, and a child find themselves outside of clan protection only a day’s journey from Ram’s Gate?”

Eva waved her knife in front of Talon’s nose. “This is our fire, Bird. You have no business asking questions.”

At hearing Eva’s harsh Ram words, Talon immediately drew his own blade, with Raca and Joshua following suit.

Zo’s hands shot out to calm the circle. “Enough. Eva, put that away. Joshua.”

One by one, the circle rested their weapons in their laps, though none went so far as to sheath them. “You’re a Ram,” said Raca to Eva. “I’ve never met a Ram woman before. For some reason, I always imagined they grew beards and had thighs the size of tree trunks. You’re actually kind of pretty.”

“A compliment? Charming.” Eva twisted the knife in her hand.

Joshua snorted, and the dying coals of the fire crackled.

Talon studied Zo. “We don’t mean to be rude, Ram. It’s not every day you see a pair of Ram and a pair of Wolves enjoying the same fire.”

Joshua said, “How did you know that Zo was a—”

“Wolf?” finished Talon. “Well, look at her. Long neck, elegant lines, the feminine curve of her jaw. It’s easy to spot.”

“You can stop staring,” said Joshua in a hard tone at odds with his usual affable nature. “She is not yours to look at.”

If only there was more time in the day.

The Earth Stone has given the two companions a path to safety, but Tabri’s magic is on the fritz and Nell has completely lost her mind with grief. Can they hold it together long enough to allow Chaos to shine a light in the darkness, or will the Madnesi destroy all magic in the world along with the prophecy?

house-of-chaos

Excerpt:

My magic was going wild inside my chest. I had never felt it so intensely before. It surged from vein to vein, taking over my muscles and thoughts. The burning that had accompanied me all these years of searching, all these years of being on the run from those who would do me harm was present. If only I could understand what it was trying to tell me?

“You might as well knock, but I doubt there will be anyone there to hear you in this kind of weather.” Delah watched the stone walls that circled the monastery and kept it safe from what haunted these mountains. She searched for any sign of life beyond, ever vigilant to any danger.

I raised my hand to knock, but found myself touching the wood instead. It was warm to the touch. A sense of something familiar beyond that I couldn’t explain. It pulsed almost like a beating heart in the palm of my hand. “There is magic in these walls.”

“What?” Delah came close and whispered in my ear. “Are you sure this is safe? You haven’t sensed magic before. Why now?”

My cheek pressed to the wood as I tried to make out what was pulsing through its cords. It was old, but not ancient. Warm but at the same time not. The only way to find out what was surging through these walls was to connect with it. Weave my magic with it and hope it gave me answers.

The warmth in my chest flowed down my arm. It filled every inch of my fingers and left my body through my finger tips. The magic on the other side was weak and old  but it spoke to me. There was no danger beyond these walls, at least not to me. “We shall be fine.”

I rapped on the wood several times with my knuckles. It echoed through the mountain tops above and cascaded into the valley below. Someone must have surly heard me beyond the walls.

With a creak, the gates slowly opened. A sweet smell of flowers filled my nostrils and welcomed me inside the monastery walls. It was an odd smell for winter that didn’t go unnoticed.

The courtyard had been cleared of snow for the most part and flowers had been planted in long boxes spread through out the space. They bloomed in all colors and shapes. Most I had never seen before. It was much warmer here. I could feel the sun on my skin, something I hadn’t felt in a long time.

It was simple and small, but the edges of the wall were lined with braziers all lit and inviting. A man stood at the entrance. He wore robes of dark red and his head was clean shaven and tanned from many days in the sun. A monk. “Welcome to the monastery in the mountains. We have been waiting for you, young magic wielder.”
