The Bourne Identity meets Under the Never Sky in this intergalactic tale of love and deception from debut novelist Beck Nicholas.

Asher is a Lifer, a slave aboard the spaceship Pelican. A member of the lowest rung of society, she must serve the ship’s Officials and Astronauts as punishment for her grandparents’ crimes back on Earth. The one thing that made life bearable was her illicit relationship with Samuai, a Fishie boy, but he died alongside her brother in a freak training accident.

Still grieving for the loss of her loved ones, Asher is summoned to the upper levels to wait on Lady, the head Official’s wife and Samuai’s mother. It is the perfect opportunity to gather intel for the Lifer’s brewing rebellion. There’s just one problem—the last girl who went to the upper levels never came back.

On the other side of the universe, an alien attack has left Earth in shambles and a group called The Company has taken control. Blank wakes up in a pond completely naked and with no memory, not even his real name. So when a hot girl named Megs invites him to a black-market gaming warehouse where winning means information, he doesn’t think twice about playing.

But sometimes the past is better left buried. As Asher and Blank’s worlds collide, the truth comes out—everyone has been lied to…

My Review:

The Black Lotus is a story that will make you feel like you’re reading a supernatural version of a Jane Austen novel. It’s even written like it came right out of the 1700’s. Just like a Jane Austen novel, there’s dancing, there’s the way they talked back then and used their fancy words to get under each others skin. It’s cleverly written, and the suspense and supernatural element to it was very refreshing for a romance written like this.

The Black Lotus follows a girl named Melissa that is just coming out and being welcomed into society. At her first coming out party, she meets the dangerous and deliciously handsome Justin. She’s warned about him, that he’s seductive and a flirt, and moves on from girl to girl. Still, she’s tempted to talk to him, a talk that leads her to believe he is exactly what everyone says he is. Still, she’s drawn to him, and she can’t explain why. As their flirtatious friendship grows, secrets about Justin begins to uncover. Justin isn’t just some wealthy lad. He is filled with a darkness and a dangerous secret. He tries to keep Melissa away from him, but Melissa does everything she can to discover just what secrets Justin keeps. But she doesn’t realize what price such dark secrets come with.

I am a huge fan of stories written in this time, and I thoroughly enjoyed The Black Lotus. However I wasn’t sold by Justin’s character. He’s a womanizer, and I, personally, am not a fan of these bad boy types. But the story itself is very interesting and Melissa is a very likable character. I’m curious to find out where Justin and Melissa’s story takes us in the sequel.

If you enjoy historical romances with a supernatural twist to it, then be sure to check out The Black Lotus!

When I was a child, I made up games and characters when my sister and I played with dolls. As I grew older, I would make up scenarios and scenes, fully intending to write them down but never finding the time. In my late teens, I discovered the world of role playing and settled into an avid ‘geeky’ life of D&D, comics, sci-fi and fantasy fiction. Years passed and I finally gave voice to the stories in my head. I write romance, fantasy, action and adventure. I love tales of steampunk and history, tales of magical powers and dark curses lurking in the shadows. Though The Black Lotus is not my first attempt at a novel, it is the first I have finished.

My favourite Disney film is Atlantis.

I’ve been a film extra and stood 5 feet away from Sam Rockwell.

Babylon 5 is my fave sci-fi show.

Excerpt

We stood there and looked around, an awkward silenceplaying between us. Then he stepped closer and took my hand in his, sending a bolt of staggering electricity zipping through my chest. “Her hand fits perfectly in mine.” He whispered this, as if confirming it with someone. His gaze locked on it, analyzing, then with a shake of his head, he spoke louder. “Sophia, I’m sorry. I …I lied to you.”

I looked at him—bewilderment crinkling my face—and tried to understand. “Lied?”

My voice broke. “I don’t get it.”

“I wasn’t sick that day. Well, in a way I was, I guess. The truth is, I was gut-sick.

That guy …he was sitting by you the whole day …and …and he never left your side. I’d check throughout the day, but he was still there. I couldn’t help it. I was insanely jealous.” He looked down, his tone deepening as he flexed his fingers that were still laced through mine.

“What?” His words astounded me. I swiped my brow with my free hand. “You were jealous …of me?”

He released my hand and paced back and forth, the nervousness seeping through as he wrung his hands. “I know it’s stupid, but I couldn’t help myself. I love the way you laugh and …I like you, Sophia …a lot, and it hurt me to see you with someone else.”

He lifted his hair off his forehead, pushing it up. His eyes locked on mine again, captivating me. I couldn’t look away. My self-consciousness took over—heckling me.

The way I looked right now—with my hair a matted mess from the mist, and no makeup on—must look ridiculous. I drew away, making myself smaller.

I laughed my nervous laugh and kicked the sand with my shoe. “Who, him? You mean …Brian?” My words wobbled, but I giggled, unable to believe that Brian talking to me could make anyone jealous.

Soulless Review

SoullessTourBanner1Soulless by Jacinta Maree
(The Immortal Gene #1)
Publication date: October 1st 2015
Genres: Dystopia, New Adult, Supernatural
Rating:4/5
Book Summary (Goodreads):

Welcome to Soulless.
We are the generation that laughs at death.

Reincarnation; what was once considered a gift of immortality has become an eternity of nightmares.

Nadia Richards lives in a world plagued by reincarnation, a system of recycling souls where all past memories, personalities and traumatic events are relived daily in disjointed sequences. Trapped within their own warped realities, not even the richest and most powerful are saved from their own minds unraveling. Madness is the new human nature, and civilizations are crumpling beneath themselves trying to outrun it.

Within a society that ignores death, Nadia appears to be the one exception to the reincarnation trap. Born without any reincarnated memories and with printless eyes, the hot tempered 19 year old quickly becomes the ultimate prize to all those wishing to end the vicious cycle, or for some, to ensure they could evade death forever.

Readers discretion: Adult language, violence and some adult scenes. For mature audiences only.

My Review:

I chose to read this book because I was very intrigued by the book summary.  Let me just say that this book is crazy and insane and I loved every bit of it. I’m still trying to process this book, it was that awesome!

Soulless is a world of reincarnated souls, has been for years, but reincarnation hasn’t always existed. Each time a soul is reincarnated an imprint is placed on the persons iris. The more imprints, the more lives a person lives. Without the drug D040, most people go crazy from all the different personalities living in their brain. Those with the money have practically an unlimited supply of drugs at their disposal in order to decrease the symptoms of the transition (when the brain starts to remember past lives). Those too poor for the drug eventually become drifters and a little crazy. All sorts of disorders are on the rise, like schizophrenia, mood disorders, personality disorders, and people don’t care about death because they already know they’ll come back one day. But then there’s Nadia, a girl without an imprint, a girl that can’t remember her past lives, if they even existed at all. Unfortunate events happen to her and she’s placed in the Alpha Prison, where all the crazy criminals not on the specialized drug are locked up. There she is experimented on due to the fact that she doesn’t have an imprint. And she makes friends with a crazy prisoner that is curious about her, and intends to use her for his own purposes. They break out of the prison and are set down an action packed, intense adventure where Diesel gets a little crazier and Nadia slowly discovers what it means to be Soulless. When living in a world so destroyed, trust is a hard thing to come by.  They face cannibals, make friends, get betrayed, and are shot at almost every turn.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have never read a book quite like this. It’s unique and completely different. Nadia is a wonderful character. She becomes this fierce determined thing that will do anything to survive. Diesel is a little crazy, what with all his past lives living in his brain. I have to be honest, their relationship is a little unhealthy, but I think part of it is because Diesel is a little crazy and they live in a crazy world. Sometimes he’s sweet, sometimes he is just horrible. And he’s desperate to keep Nadia at his side no matter what. At first, it’s a little creepy when he tells her he’ll find her anywhere. But his character really grows on you after a while. Once you get to know him it starts to make sense why he’s so desperate to keep her around. Their relationship is toxic and so intense. I couldn’t help but be intrigued and fascinated by their relationship, and eager to find out where the author was going to take us next. Plus, in a crazy world like the one in Soulless where everyone but Nadia seems to be losing their mind if they aren’t taking some sort of drug to suppress past lives, no wonder the relationship between Diesel and Nadia is the way it is. He’s a little obsessed about keeping her with him, though it’s endearing in a way. And even though Diesel is a little on the crazy side, I have to admit I kind of loved him.

The world building in Soulless was just amazing. Its set way in the future, people are crazy, some are eating each other, and others just trying to survive, and it felt like I was watching a movie.

This book is very violent. I think that if a teenager were interested to read this book, than the parent should probably preview it first. There’s violence, language, and an adult scene that really wasn’t that graphic, but still. It’s definitely intended for mature audiences. If you like dystopian, futuristic stories, filled with action packed adventure and a toxic love story, then I definitely recommend reading this book. It’s a crazy, wild ride! And I am eager to find out where the adventure takes us in book 2!

My Review

I’m going to put my experience of this book in a way all readers understand. I read this book in one day. I honestly couldn’t put it down. Shadow of Deception is such an amazing read and so easy to get lost in from the very beginning. The main character Kazumi wakes among a bloody field thinking the worst scenarios as to how she got there. Discovered and brought to a hospital, she doesn’t even realize until a nurse asks her what her name is, that she has no memory of her life. I absolutely loved all the twists and turns of this book and the overall mystery of who Kazumi once was. The nurse names her Gabrielle, or Gabi, and though she may not like it, she introduces herself as Gabi when she is urged to go with a man that may help her with her memory problem.

From then on, she is thrust into a world of a superhuman society called the Sarcomeres that have been struggling to continue on their way of life. While some have more potential in their gene to be Elite Sarcomeres and capable of incredible abilities, they are the last headquarters left. Gabi soon discovers that there is another superhuman society out there called the Neuronics that mind abilities. Both societies have been fighting the epic fight and believe they are right in their goals.

It is not until Gabi begins to retain her memory that I lost all thoughts about putting this book down. She learns of her true name, Kazumi, and begins a journey to her true self. Kazumi is such a strong and powerful character and it was an amazing perspective to read from. I really loved her character, her crush/love interest Finn, and all of the other amazing side characters that are so well developed.

The world building pulled me in as well. I really enjoyed how things were explained in the book and it became very believable to see new inventions, the evolved super-abilities, and the united cultures in this futuristic world. Kazumi’s perspective is very easy to read and really flowed along naturally as she begins to discover herself. It’s not until the end that Kazumi remembers everything and the story still ends on a cliffhanger. I really look forward to the sequel of this book and would definitely recommend you read it.

Book Three of the Air Awakens Series

26760091

Exclusive Excerpt From Earth’s End

Vhalla snapped the reins and dug her heels into Baston’s sides, forcing him into an all-out run. From above, she heard the shouts of her waking enemy.
Thick and melodic calls erupted in the night, a language completely foreign to Vhalla’s ears. She didn’t have to know the words to know they weren’t friendly, so Vhalla pushed harder, pressing herself to Baston. Vhalla took a breath as she heard arrows being knocked overhead.
The sound of bowstrings being drawn in mass made gooseflesh dot her arms. Another shout, a single word and arrows cut through the air, determined to rain death around her. Even if Vhalla was certain her chainmail would shield her, the horse was completely unarmored; if Baston died, she was as good as dead. Vhalla twisted in her saddle, sweeping a hand through the air. The curtain of wind sent the arrows scattering harmlessly.
They shouted in protest, angst-ridden that she continued on unscathed.
The second assault came faster and hastened Vhalla’s mounting frustration. She had to be out of their range soon. More lights began to blaze above and behind her, casting the ground below in a faint glow. The light illuminated the edge of the city, and Vhalla was forced to stake her life on the hope that once she was out they wouldn’t catch her.
The arrows soared through the air once more and Vhalla twisted, knocking them away in mass. She expected to hear a cry for a third assault, but instead what she heard was even more disheartening. Two words that someone said in a thick Southern Common.
“Wind Demon!”
She became their prey. The sound of thundering hooves came from the direction of where the city first began.
Vhalla crossed under the edge of the city, plunging into the welcoming darkness. Had it been a day ago, Vhalla would not have given those riders a moment’s worry. Baston would outrun any normal horse, plus with her wind he was faster than thunder across the sky. But Baston had been ridden hard with only a brief rest.
Vhalla shifted her vision and peered over her shoulder. In the distance she saw them, riding relentlessly after her.
Sweating, panting, clutching the reins with white knuckles, Vhalla pushed all her energy into the wind at Baston’s and her back. More—they both had to give more. In her blind determination she almost missed the whiz of an arrow through the air.
Vhalla thrust out her arm and stopped the arrow midflight. She closed her fist and threw her arm backwards. The arrow turned and sped back at its original owner. Vhalla watched it soar straight into the Northerner’s eye, the one she pointed a finger at. The man slumped, and then fell off his saddle. She swallowed hard, looking away as the others’ cries grew louder.
Eyes, she would always go for the eyes. Whether someone was or wasn’t a Groundbreaker with stone-like skin was a risk she couldn’t take; she wouldn’t have many shots. Another archer held his bow, waiting for a different opportunity to take his chance.
Baston was already breathing heavy, and Vhalla knew she had to get them off her tail. The four riders behind her rode on fresh mounts and had the advantage of their night’s worth of sleep. Vhalla turned and pointed a finger. Sweeping her hand upward, an arrow freed itself from the other archer’s quiver. With a twist of her wrist, and the keen focus of a killer, Vhalla sent it into the unsuspecting Northerner’s eye.
One of the remaining two riders fell away as they swerved through the trees, his companion pushing forward. As the man swung wide, Vhalla realized they were trying to flank her. Vhalla grabbed for the dagger strapped to her wrist, sending it straight for his eye.
In the process, the woman rider had caught up with Baston, raising a wickedly curved blade toward his haunches. Vhalla threw out her other arm, sending the rider toppling head over heels. It wasn’t chance that the assailant’s blade slit her wielder’s throat in the fall.
Vhalla held out an expectant palm, her own dagger returning to it after a moment.
Wiping the blood on her thigh, she quickly sheathed it against her wrist before grabbing the reins once more. Vhalla swallowed a cry for speed; shouting at the horse would not make it go faster. It would only further compromise her position.
Vhalla pressed her lips together, forcing herself to keep her composure. It was not the first person she had killed. She had killed on the Night of Fire and Wind, she had killed the man who had murdered Larel, and she had killed with her bare hands at the Pass.
What had sunk deep into her bones was the acceptance of what she must do. It was knowing she had become a killer. It was how easy it was for her to slay her foes without even thinking of each of them as a whole person that showed Vhalla she’d gone far down a path she’d never wanted. They were entities, enemies, barriers, but they weren’t human.
Distracted by her inner conflict, Vhalla was caught completely off-guard by the first assault coming from the trees. A Groundbreaker swung down from the air, bringing his sword against the back of her head. Vhalla attempted to dodge at the last second, but it was too late. The blade slipped off her chainmail but it left her vision blurred and her ears ringing.
She blinked, trying to sort her senses as she pushed Baston onward, putting the assailant behind them. Groundbreakers jumped from limb to limb in the trees above her—free and fearless. Vines came to life to meet their extended hands, allowing them to soar through the air. With a twist or a tug, their lifeline shrunk back, curling around branches to pull them upward.
She wanted to feel amazed; perhaps she would have, if these people weren’t out to kill her. Another swung low, and Vhalla dropped off to the side of the saddle to dodge. Righting herself, Vhalla redrew her dagger in one quick motion as a third swung forward to attack. She sent the blade soaring through the vine the Groundbreaker held.
The man fell through the sky; Vhalla’s mind betrayed her, showing a different body plummeting through the air.
With a growl, she turned her blade to the next Northerner she saw, relying on the same tactic. She would show them why one did not hang above the head of the Windwalker. The other body fell with a sickening thud, and Vhalla left them behind her. With a twitch of her wrist, her blade returned to her hand.
Baston’s pace had slowed, and Vhalla snapped his reins again. This was the first time the beast did not heed her command, and she felt uneasiness settle across her.
Five Northerners still jumped from tree to tree overhead as dawn began to fade into early morning. Vhalla wondered if they were biding their time for rider and mount to tire. If she were they, she’d do the same thing. Baston’s sides heaved with exhaustion.
Their presence began to wear on Vhalla, and she watched them with bated breath, waiting for the next assault. Another hour passed and Baston slowed to a trot; she expected this to be the moment they attacked. But the Northerners held fast, following from welcoming branch to welcoming branch, each bent to meet their feet and hands.
They were toying with her, like cats with a mouse.

Excerpt:

Later that night, Avalon returned to her dorm room. After brushing her teeth and washing her face, she read through the list of rules in her drawer. The list was short and to the point. Most forms of direct insubordination, theft, etc. could earn one a strike in the habitat. Avalon doubted, however, that the President would actually utilize such severe punishments. After glancing at the time, she dimmed the light in her room and climbed up to her capsule bed.

Whereas she initially enjoyed having a room all to herself, now the room felt smaller. Claustrophobic even. She couldn’t pinpoint what was off, but it made her uneasy.

Something wasn’t right.

Probably just home sick. Silly me.

And she closed her eyes, completely unaware someone else was watching.
