Herein you’ll find Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson’s Family Cake, memories of beef jerky and sassafras tea from John Erickson of Hank the Cowdog fame, Sam Houston’s barbecue sauce, and stories and recipes from Roy Bedichek, Bob Compton, J. Frank Dobie, Bob Flynn, Jean Flynn, Leon Hale, Elmer Kelton, Gary Lavergne, James Ward Lee, Jane Monday, Joyce Roach, Ellen Temple, Walter Prescott Webb, and Jane Roberts Wood. Excerpts from Chapter 8: Racing Ahead

We were intent on making a difference. My daughter-in-law often says that I like to make waves. So does Ellen [Cohen]! Together we united to create a tsunami. A vocal defender of sexual assault victims… (pg. 95)

It was a splendid ceremony, one that marked a middle-class “commoner” proving she was worthy of a prince. Letizia Ortiz represented the future of Spain in a progressive world. (pg.96)

I suppose that’s what reality is: a dream-like experience shattered with the clanging of an emergency. No wonder we lose ourselves in fairy tales. (pg. 97)

I recall being dropped off within walking distance amid a sea of protestors. I admit I was nervous—the protestors seemed very hostile—but I was also upset. While they may not have agreed with Reagan’s policies and actions as President, making a scene at his funeral was, more than anything, disrespectful. (pg. 97)

We [also] saluted our country, which we both held most dear. It was hard not to be affected, after having so recently said good-bye to an American President beloved by many. I remain impressed with Ronal Reagan to this day. He was able to connect with people and bridge differences. In this era of partisan bickering, our country could use someone like him. (pg. 99)

DARKNESS BRUTAL

I let the pulse of the music coat me and mute my surroundings. A mass of people crowd the dance floor of the club, and I sit on an abandoned couch in the corner. The lights beat at the air in blues and greens, and bodies twist and merge to the thunder. I lean back, close my eyes, and try to get lost in it, the smells and sounds of people and their collective high.
Something moves next to me. I look over to find a girl sprawled on the seat beside me, trying to catch her breath. She’s not dressed in the usual club gear, more like a girl who got lost on her way to a beach party: Hurley T-shirt, jean skirt, and red Converse. Her cheeks are flushed pink; her throat and forehead glitter with sweat. She glances at me like she didn’t know I was there. She licks her upper lip, her eyes not leaving mine. Then she says something I can’t hear.
I point to my ear and shake my head.
She smiles and laughs, lighting up the space around her. She rests her hand on my arm, like we’re friends and I just told her the most hilarious joke, and then she gets up and disappears into the mass of bodies again.
My arm tingles, my body reacting to the moment of contact in a sudden and disconcerting way. I think I’ve had my fill of watching people indulge their baser instincts. I need to get out of here.
The beat of the music speeds up, vibrating faster as I move through the crowd. I try not to touch anyone, which is nearly impossible. All the emotions and appetites are overwhelming, as if the rising rhythm of the music makes their yearnings rise, too. Lust buzzes in the air. A hunger stirs in me, a gaping hole, needing to be filled. With touch.
The touch of female fingers. A hand on my arm, taking my wrist, pulling me into the fray, into the pressing bodies. And I don’t try to escape. I let her take me.
Because I’m tired.
Because I’m a dumbass.
A girl moves in front of me—not the Hurley girl, not the one I was hoping for. She presses closer, so close I can almost taste the salty perspiration on her skin. She has thin, birdlike shoulders, a swan neck, a heart-shaped face, and black hair, long and tangled, turning blue and green with the light. Her hands slide up my chest. She wraps her arms around my neck and tilts her head to look up at me.
Her lips are full and painted dark purple. There’s a dimple in her left cheek that gets deeper with her growing smile. And her eyes . . .
Fog fills my head for a second, interrupting my thoughts.
“Hi,” she mouths, calling attention to her lips again.
And then she’s rising up on her toes, pulling me down to her, twisting her fingers in my hair, her lips smashing against mine.
My body buzzes from her touch, and my hands react, drawing her into me. I drink her in. She tastes like the air around me, hunger and urgency, and—
Green apple Jolly Ranchers?
I grip her sides, her ribs so delicate beneath my fingers. The sweet tang of her teases me, the hunger becoming a monster deep inside. I have to press her closer, tighter, try to feed it, as I feel the fire of her need link with mine.
She pulls back a little and looks at me with wide eyes, like she’s shocked. That’s when I see the mark, a glowing, blue-inked line of what looks like Chinese symbols, trailing down the nape of her neck to her shoulder blade. Symbols that I’m suddenly sure mean: touch this girl at your own risk.
It’s the only thing I see for a second: Beware. Beware.
Until her energy reaches for me, wispy tendrils of blue light wrapping their way around my wrists and snaking up my chest.
I jerk away, into the guy behind me, stepping on his girlfriend’s toes. I get shoved— thankfully farther from the hypnotic girl—through a space in the crowd, saying a hundred excuse-me’s even though I know no one can hear them. I find my way out of the press of bodies to the edge of the room again where it’s safe.
It’s time to leave. I should’ve left an hour ago.

Excerpt:

DARKNESS FAIR – Chapter One

I never would’ve come on this job if I’d known it involved a demon. But last night during the briefing, Sid acted like it didn’t even involve anything paranormal.
“Probably just a human thing,” he said. “We can wave a little smoke, give the client a prayer or two, maybe one of Holly’s happy cookies, and the nice lady will be feeling better in no time.”
Not exactly. Standing here looking at the client’s massive living room that’s piled to the ceiling with stuff, I can tell this won’t be as easy as appeasing a grumpy five-year-old.
“You should’ve brought Connor,” I mumble to Sid as I survey the mess around us. The thing is here somewhere. I can smell its rotten-egg ass even over the stale air and must coming from the clutter. Mountains of junk rim the walls and cover almost every inch of what looks like a very expensive marble floor. “I can’t believe you dragged me here.” It’s my first time on a job site since everything went to hell four weeks ago—literally.
If Sid heard my complaint about being here on the job, he isn’t acting like it. He’s just smiling his salesman smile and listening intently to the large woman in the silk muumuu on the leather couch as she tells him how her cat tried to eat her last week. She looks young, midthirties. Too young to be wearing a muumuu and living in this filthy place. A bit of bandage peeks out from under her flowery sleeve. There’s an angry-looking scratch on her neck, too. She ended up in the ER with twelve stitches from the attack.
“Fluffy keeps leaving dead mice lying around, dead rats, even floppy gophers,” she says, her face wrinkling with disgust. “Dead all-sorts-a-stuff everywhere. It’s starting to stink no matter which room I sit in, and I can’t take it anymore. I can’t seem to escape it. And then this happened.” She motions to the scratches on her neck.
I smell the death, but the odor is layered with the putrid stink from rotten food, moldy boxes stacked end to end, and piles of clothes mixed with God-knows-what. Not to mention the sulfur wafting around from whatever demon is hiding in this place. How can this woman tell one gross thing from another?
Sid crunches his way over some debris to sit beside the client on the five inches of couch space still available.
“You rest easy,” he says as he pats her broad shoulder. “My boy, Aidan here, will take care of anything that’s gone wrong.” He motions toward where I’m standing by a stack of magazines and DVDs, and the woman looks at me for the first time since Sid and I walked through the door.
Her eyes grow a little when she studies my face, my hair, her gaze taking in the markings on my hand and arm for a few seconds longer than normal.
I really should be used to the staring by now. Ever since my “change,” or whatever we’re calling it, strangers seem to think I’m either something to marvel at . . . or something to fear. It makes me wonder what they’re sensing. Just one of the reasons I like staying at the house and leaving the jobs to the others.
She gives me a half smile, half grimace, her lips tightening over her teeth, then she turns back to Sid. “I’m not sure what else I can do. I’ll pay you whatever you want, just please, fix Fluffy. He’s all I have left now.” Her voice shakes a little and she points to something near her foot that looks like a plastic box. No, a cat carrier. I hadn’t noticed it among the piles of clutter.
Something moves inside the carrier. A shadow. The cat? A hiss emerges, like an answer, and the smell of sulfur billows out even thicker.
A shiver runs through me.
Sid leans on his cane and stands up from his spot beside the woman as he runs a hand over his bald head. Then he hesitates, like he smells it, too. He steps back, studying the carrier, then looks sideways at me, a question on his face.
Could the cat be possessed?
Or maybe the cat isn’t a cat.
“So, Ms. Bentley.” Sid clears his throat. “How long have you had, um, the, um . . . Fluffy?” He tries to move back toward me, but stumbles over a box marked As Seen on TV, before steadying himself on a nearby coatrack—his arm tangles in the strap of one of the very large bras hanging from the hook. He doesn’t seem to notice, though; his eyes still haven’t left the small cat carrier at the client’s feet.
“He was a neighborhood stray,” she says, sounding deflated. “I took him in a month ago, shortly after . . . after my mother died. She hated cats, so I was never able to have one. And Fluffy was such a sweet thing.” Her eyes glisten with growing sadness.
She puckers her lips like she’s holding something in. Finally, she says, “Until a few days ago, he was all cuddles and smooches.”
Well, now Fluffy is all talons and teeth.
“Very sorry.” Sid finishes making his way over to me and pats me on the shoulder, very fatherly-like. “Aidan will need to look at the, uh, the . . . your Fluffy.”
I turn to him. “Will I?”
He nods. “The show must go on, my boy.”
Really? Must it?
Didn’t Shakespeare say we’re all actors on the stage of life, or something? Well, Sid takes that notion very seriously. The twenty-four-year-old magician is always playing some part or another to fit the game.
He nudges me again and whispers sideways, “I know you’ve been wanting to jump back in, so here you go. Just see what you can accomplish. It’s in a cage and all that.” He waves his arm as if he’s just explained how to go about this.
I glare at him and shake my head. “You’re an ass.”
He lets out a fake laugh and gives the client a look like, Aren’t teenagers impossible? “It’s a preliminary test, Aidan. So we know what we’re dealing with.”
I sigh. As much as I don’t want anything to do with this job, I need to start figuring out my power. It feels like it’s growing, every day, bigger and louder, like a ringing in my ears. It’s pushing now, this weird urgency, making me itch to . . . well, kill. It’s terrifying.
I need to get these new urges under control. And if I want to kill a demon again so badly, why not give it a whirl?
I’m wearing my amulet, so if a corporeal demon is in that carrier instead of a cat, then it won’t see me. However, if the demon is possessing the cat, using the cat’s eyes to see, then I’m about to be discovered.
I take a deep breath and step closer to get a look. Following the boss’s orders.
Ms. Bentley leans toward her innocent Fluffy.
I crouch down to get a clearer view, avoiding the trash at my feet.
The cat hisses and its plastic carrier jerks and clangs. But the thing’s not looking at me, it’s more like it’s sensing danger, its hackles rising. And then I see tiny horns beside the ears, and thorn-like protrusions on its back through grey-striped fur. Its eyes dart around the room—eyes like light reflecting off a pool of oil. Its teeth are shiny silver.
Not an actual cat. An actual corporeal demon. Check.
This lady is lucky all the thing did was set her up with a few stitches. It could’ve scratched off her face entirely.
Prickles work over my skin as I stare at the thing. Corporeal demons are somehow less disgusting than the ones I see on the other side of the Veil. The ones that manage to get called up by witches and cross over to the physical plane are always trying to masquerade as something they’re not, and sometimes they suck at it—like Fluffy here, a cat with horns. Yes, they’re still creepy, just not as creepy as when they’re full monty in their spiritual form.
Looking at it makes the strange new urges in my gut stir, reminding me that I’m a killer now. Officially.
“Thank you, ma’am,” I say, quickly standing, itching to run but not wanting to scare the woman more.
I stumble back to Sid’s side and say under my breath, “We’re done here.”
“What sort of help will you be if you leave?” Ms. Bentley rests a hand on the carrier, as if comforting the demon inside. “We need help.”
A corporeal demon as a pet. That’s definitely new. I wonder how she hasn’t noticed Fluffy’s oddities. I mean, horns? Come on.
Maybe the fumes from the rotting crap in the house have messed with her head.
Sid clears his throat and waves an arm as if trying to keep her calm with hand gestures. “It’s all right, Ms. Bentley. It’s merely that your cat may be possessed and in need of an exorcism.”
I turn and gape at him, wondering why he’d spit that out right now.
She gasps and clutches her muumuu to her chest with a meaty fist.
I nudge Sid. “But my boss and I should maybe discuss it and get back to you.” Sid’s reading this all wrong. Not surprising, since the guy is slowly losing his senses from staying too long in this time. But I’m not a fan of him blurting out made-up shit to the clients before we’ve agreed on what shit can be said out loud.
“I’m paying you to fix this now!” she says. “I can’t leave poor Fluffy in a cage forever.”
“We’ll call you,” I say, shoving Sid toward the door before he can say anything else stupid.
Sid trips over a karaoke machine and nearly dives into the wall headfirst. But somehow he looks graceful about it, with his thin limbs and delicate fingers reaching out like a dancer’s. “Don’t let it out of the cage. We’ll call you tonight,” he says, righting himself effortlessly with his cane. “And we’ll try to get help here in the morning. Just, please, keep it locked up until then.”
She stands, watching us maneuver our way out of the living room. “One more day!” she hollers with a catch in her voice before the door closes behind us, leaving us on the porch.
I need a shower.

Frozen Tides Review

FrozenTides

Frozen Tides
by Morgan Rhodes
Status: 4th Installment of the Falling Kingdoms Seris
Publisher: Razorbill (December 15, 2015)
Rating: 5/5

Book Summary (Goodreads):

Rebels, royals, and monsters wage war over the Mytican throne in the shocking fourth book of the Falling Kingdoms series, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes.

CLEO: Reeling after a bloody showdown in Limeros ending with Amara’s abduction of the water crystal, and a vacancy in the Mytican throne, Princess Cleo must cast aside her feelings and look toward her kingdom with the eyes of a Queen.

MAGNUS: With the kingdom in chaos, Princess Lucia still missing and quite possibly in danger, and a shocking realization about Cleo, the steely prince is once again torn between love and duty, leaving him wondering whether he’s strong enough to rule his people.

LUCIA: The young sorcercess has had her vengeance after the cruel death of her first and only love. Heartbroken and unable to trust anyone, she allies with the awoken Fire god, who also seeks revenge.

JONAS: After escaping death by the skin of his teeth, the defeated rebel—along with a mysterious stranger–leader reunites with Princess Cleo, only to find himself a mere pawn in a dangerous hunt for the elusive Kindred.

KING GAIUS: Abandoned by Melenia and betrayed by his own children, Gaius flees Mytica and sails to Kraeshia, where he attempts to ally with the famously brutal emperor across the Silver Sea.

My Review:

I’ve been an avid Falling Kingdoms fan since the first book. It’s been completely wonderful to see the dark prince transform into something so much more. Magnus is one of my all time favorite characters, and his role in Frozen Tides, along with his character development, is purely amazing. The way Morgan Rhodes has created her characters, and their story arcs are wonderful. She is a brilliant author! Trust me when I say you don’t particularly like Magnus in Falling Kingdoms. He’s a cold, heartless prince that has eyes for his sister Lucia. He is damaged and a tortured soul. His story arc has taken place over all four books. I have loved seeing his character development. His is one of the best story arcs I have ever seen.

Frozen Tides takes off where Gathering Darkness left off. So many people are on the hunt for the Kindred, but only one person knows the truth behind the power of the Kindred. Lucia helps the fire kindred in his search to reach the Sanctuary. Meanwhile Magnus and Cleo bicker with each other none stop as the seek refuge in his father’s castle in Limeros.  King Gaius travels to Kraeshia and makes a deadly bargain. It’s non stop action, filled with twists and turns, and a love so wonderful it leaves you with wanting more.

I’ve been waiting for this Magnus moment for years now, and it doesn’t disappoint! There’s so much to love about this book. It’s my favorite of the four books, but they are all amazing. If you haven’t started reading this series yet then I encourage you to do so. This is one of my all time favorite series. It’s pure fantasy and has a little bit of everything in it. Love. Betrayal. Mystery. And the chemistry between Magnus and Cleo is wonderful. I love their bickering. I love the subtle hints that show how they feel about each other. And I love that we finally get to see how they both feel about each other. Plus the ending in this is one of the best endings ever written in a book. It’s a real page turner! Don’t miss out on reading such a great, epic series!

Excerpt:

“Oh, man, he’s dead,” Ethan Silver said, looking like he wanted to puke. He got up and ran to the door, then out into the hallway. His shoes squeaked like noisy exclamation points as he yelled for help in a high, girly voice.

The rest of us were statues, staring at the silent form of our teacher lying belly up like a gigantic dislodged mushroom top.

“Is he really dead?” another of the popular girls asked. She huddled into a group of her friends.

I hoped Mr. Sands wasn’t dead. Death was twisted. Ugly. Death fractured a family. With missing pieces, fractions can never be made whole. I could still see the anguished face of my father, hear his final instructions as he’d gripped my arm before Death pulled him away. I clenched my teeth against the remembered hurt. My world had fallen apart. I’d walked around in shock for days, trying to handle my own pain, and yet, still be strong for Mom and my sister. Time hadn’t dulled the pain. My insides were as shredded as if I’d swallowed a porcupine, and every breath I took stabbed me from within.

“Mr. Sands isn’t dead yet.” Riley’s voice was low and impatient.

I tried to go to the teacher to see if I could help him, but Riley stopped me by grabbing my arm. Through the thickness of my sweater and shirt, the contact burned like a hot match to skin, and I didn’t like the sensation.

“Is he going to die?” I asked. I brushed Riley’s touch away. Unable to pull my attention away from the disturbing scene, I could only stare as the knots in my stomach tightened.

“Yes.”

“Why did you do that to him?” I whispered.

“He was going to kill you.”

I raised my eyes to his. “Kill me?” If that were true, Riley, my enemy, had prevented it? Confused, I said, “Why would he want to kill me?”

“I’ll explain when I come to your house later.”

My house? Why would he come to my house? This wasn’t good. I frowned as I tried to make sure I kept what I was feeling—ice-cold fear— from showing on my face. Probation Officers rarely visited the home of common Supernaturals. What was going on?

“Why do you want to come over?” I asked without thinking, not using the humbleness a Supernatural of Riley’s station called for in our world.

“Do you have something to hide?” he asked, his gaze searching my face intently. His eyes narrowed.

I was right. It was bad news. My throat ached as if I’d swallowed razor blades. I looked away, hoping to convince him. “I was curious.” I softened my tone and then held my breath, waiting for his answer, but he didn’t get a chance to respond.

Hot on the heels of Ethan, Principal Ellie Richards ran into the room. She was as thin as a praying mantis with tiny eyes that seemed to see in every direction at once. She wore her usual pencil skirt to cover her pipe cleaner legs.

Several teachers followed in her wake. They knelt down beside Mr. Sands, their voices buzzing together, bees in the educational hive.

“Call 911.”

“Ambulance should be…”

“Don’t try to move him.”

The principal checked Mr. Sands’s pulse, then stood and looked at the clock, then back at all of us. Twenty minutes remained until the final bell. Her chin bobbed when she said, “You’re all dismissed.”

Oblivious to the rumors flowing among our classmates, Riley walked toward the door of the classroom. When he neared the principal, she grabbed his arm with her abnormally long, thin fingers and spoke to him in a low, angry hiss. Her knuckles turned white, and the scraggly muscles bunched in her forearm.

Riley answered in an equally low voice, then jerked free from her grasp. She stared at the door to the hallway for a long moment after he disappeared and then swung her gaze to me.

Something reptilian flashed in her pencil thin black pupils. A hunger.

She blinked and her pupils returned to normal.

I stumbled backward a step, not understanding what I’d seen, and accidentally dropped my history book. The thick book slid across the floor, zooming in front of three seats to land at her feet. She bent and picked it up, holding on when I tried to take it from her.

“Watch out, Juliet.” Her voice, a slithering whisper, made my stomach clench. I knew she wasn’t talking about the book.

Book Excerpt:

Someone gives a feeble clap. “Magnificent! A most rousing speech to rally the heathens, Mason!”

My feet fuse to the floor at the raspy voice that wafts into the room. Tucker strains at his collar. I yank him back, my heart pounding.

A shrunken man with an unnatural stoop steps into view. My skin crawls with a new level of fear. My guns in the Crematauto, along with the rest of the weapons. I fumble around in my pocket and latch onto my switchblade. A trickle of sweat runs down behind my ears. The man standing in the entry looks freakishly old and frail. Tucker could take him down in a heartbeat, but my brain sounds an inner caution. He probably didnt come alone.

Before I even finish my thought, the doorway darkens and four armed men in black fatigues troop through. Big-shouldered, faces set like flint on necks thick as tree stumps. Schutz Clones! I tighten my grip on Tucker and command him to stay. One false move and hell end up another carcass waiting to be incinerated. He minds me, but tension radiates through his collar.

“Welcome to the Craniopolis,” the old man says. “My apologies for the modest welcoming committee, but your timing is most unfortunate. Everyone is at the unveiling of our new Hovermedes prototype.” His body shakes out a shallow breath, as he shuffles toward me. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Dr. Lyong.”

I slide my gaze in Masons direction. His face registers confusion. Then a flicker of recognition.

“What … happened to you?” he asks, in a half-whisper.

Dr. Lyong jerks to a stop in front of me and lets out a long, trembling sigh. Its all I can do not to gag. His breath smells of decaying compost.

“Restructuring DNA proved more complex than I had hoped.” Dr. Lyong runs a finger under his beaked nose and waves it dismissively in Masons direction. The skin is stretched so tight over his hand I can see the grape-colored veins forking out beneath it. He barely looks human.

I cant repress a shudder.

Deceived (Soul Keeper Series) Review

LONE STAR LITERARY LIFE Blog Tours

L.A. Starkey’s
SOUL KEEPER SERIES

They say a soul is the immaterial essence, the animating principle, the actuating cause of an individual life.
But what if you had to share yours with the one person you hated the most?
The soul mate principle states that for every one soul there is another that will recognize its match, hence creating the perfect union.
But what if you had two soul mates, which would you choose?
What if your choices had eternal ramification?
Deceived, the debut novel in the Soul Keeper Series, is a modern day love story about the implications of having more than one soul mate, and having to choose between the two of them. The decisions of the gods has left the next generation, their heirs, torn between fate and reality, and the balance of the future hangs in anticipation of what’s to come.

“I love how the Greek myths are woven into this story with detail yet its still a modern high school romance. Sam is just an ordinary girl, mostly. The writing is tight and I got lost in the characters.” – Loren Weaver, Author of The Victoria Novak: Paranormal Division Series

“I read this book in one day because it kept me so engaged with the story that I didn’t want to put it down. There’s lots going on in the story, but it all flows really well and I like books with the ancient Gods and mythology of any nation.” – Rosie, Roses are Amber

My Review:

What can I say about this book? I read it in a day, that’s how amazing it was! I would definitely give this a 4.5 out of 5 star rating. I’m honestly not too big into soul-mates, but I definitely made an exception for this book. There’s so much to love about this book. To start with, the writing is amazing. The main characters are wonderful and their story unwinds with ease. There’s so many twists and turns, and one flat out surprising ending that left me needing, not just wanting, but needing to read book 2 in order to find out more. I honestly was surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. But her characters and their story just reels you in from the very first page. I simply couldn’t put the book down.

Deceived is a story about an orphan girl named Sam that has dreams about two deliciously handsome young men. She barely remembers them when she wakes up, and can barely remember what they look like. In return, Marcus and Nicholas remember her clearly, and have been sharing dreams with her for 400 years. Marcus and Nicholas are the grandson of Zeus and are immortal. They are also the children of one of the Fates along with their sister Julianna. A prophecy surrounds Sam and the children of the Fates, one that is a direct result from a very long vengeful war between Zeus and Prometheus. I don’t want to get into too much detail about the prophecy, since it’s pretty awesome and you don’t figure out all of it until the middle of the book, but lets just say it basically has to do with two boys falling in love with one girl, and one girl deciding which boy to love.

I’m also not huge into love triangles, but there’s such an awesome twist to this love triangle that I find it flat out brilliant. I cannot wait to see whom she chooses and though I thoroughly enjoyed both brothers, whom have their faults, their differences, their charms and unique personalities, I most definitely have a brother I am rooting for. I honestly wasn’t sure at first which brother I would like more, but something happens in the book (that I dare not say) that definitely seals the deal for me on which brother I prefer. But to put it plainly, both brothers are pretty awesome.

One aspect I really enjoyed with this book is how connected she feels to the brothers. It doesn’t feel like the love just bam happened. You definitely feel how the love has been building up for the brothers all this time. How they’ve gotten to know her for 400 years and how much they feel for her. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, their love for her. And as for Sam, she feels connected to them, feels drawn to them, she feels like she knows them even though she can’t remember and its very believable that she could love these young men though she barely really knows them in the story. Deep down, she has know them herself for 400 years even in past lives. I actually don’t particularly like books about reincarnation either, but for this particular story I think it adds a wonderful element to the story. Plus, there’s just so much to love about this book.

Deceived is poetic, and lyrical. It’s breathtaking, and heartbreaking. It’s a read you don’t want to miss.

This book is a modern day Greek Mythological story. If you like books based off Greek Mythology, love triangles, mystery, twists and turns around every corner, and emotional rides, then I highly recommend this read.

Chapter One Excerpt:

There was no moving in this moment. Her body afforded her no such luxury, as swirling white mist covered the soft green grass, giving the world an ethereal appearance. Crimson danced against the golden sky as the evening moved in quickly, hoping to make way for its dark lover.

Sam gazed around her, trying to make sense of the familiarity she felt with her setting, but she failed to hold onto the fleeting memory. The soft crunch of grass moving changed everything as realization dawned—she was no longer alone.

Her dark sapphire eyes narrowed, brow creasing as a figure cut through the dense, chalky air. He towered over her by a head or two, and judging by the large expanse of his shoulders, he often left the gym stained in his scent. As his shape continued to gain clarity, from color and size to the defined lines of a life well lived, the swell of anticipation grew within her at the story his facial features might tell.

As he drew close enough for focus, her jaw slackened and her eyes widened with wonder. He was for all intents and purposes a teenager, and yet by his exotic appearance, she guessed him to be a foreigner. Wherever he was from, he was simply beautiful.

He stopped just before her, his gaze locked on hers, and try though she may words escaped her cry for assistance. His piercing jade eyes bore into her, dark orange rays stretching lazily from the iris, his skin seeming to glitter as if kissed by the sun.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

“For me?” Sam blinked in surprise, taking a hesitant step back.

“Ah, Samantha,” he breathed out, his brow creasing ever so slightly. “Same questions every time, my love. Shall I give you the same answers?”

“W-what a-answers?” She shook her head, attempting to draw in a breath that wasn’t filled with the smell of pure male.

There would be no relaxing in front of him for something was so very familiar and yet alarming to all of her protective senses. Brick by brick, her heart constructed a thick wall that would promise protection. He took a step forward and reached for her hand, but was a bit too late to infiltrate her senses as the wall was up and impenetrable.

She exhaled softly as their skin connected and instinctively let her fingers wrap around his as a sign of friendship. The warmth of his touch sent tingles racing along the corridors of her body and yet still the cold loneliness remained because she demanded it so. No one would ever penetrate her defenses again. Self-preservation had become her lifelong companion simply because life required such company.
