Emerge
by Melissa A. Craven
Paperback: 438 pages
Publisher: Midnight Hour Studio (April 1, 2015)
Rating: 3/5

Book Summary (Goodreads):

Allie Carmichael has always believed life is simple.

You’re born.

You live.

You die.

She has no cause to believe that equation works differently for her, but there has to be a reason the world treats her like a pariah.

When an unexpected move to Kelleys Island brings Aidan McBrien crashing into her life, Allie is thrown by his reaction. He doesn’t shrink from her touch. He doesn’t stutter or make a quick exit. He smiles and welcomes her into his circle of friends, who aren’t exactly comfortable with Allie, but they seem to get her in a way most people don’t.

Finally, Allie has a real shot at normal and rides that high right up to her sixteenth birthday when she wakes in agony—an experience Aidan insists they have all faced. She struggles in ignorance, uncertain of what is real and what isn’t. When she emerges, Allie is different. She has always been different, but even among her extraordinary friends, she and Aidan are special.

As Allie struggles to maintain her tenuous grasp on the power that threatens to overwhelm her, she worries she will lose herself in this strange new world. A dangerous world where she will have to fight tooth and nail to defend the power and freedom that is her birthright.

…only Allie hates to fight.

My Review:

Emerge is an imaginative story filled with fantasy and self discovery. It’s a great coming of age story about a girl named Allie that begins her journey as a timid individual, but over time learns who she is and defines herself. All her life, Allie has been an outcast, with people having somewhat uncomfortable interactions with her for unknown reasons. That is, until she meets Aidan, whom doesn’t cringe at her touch or wishes to be anywhere but with her. Instead, Aidan helps Allie come out of her shell and the two become a formidable team, always there for each other, always looking out for each other. But it isn’t until her Awakening that she truly realizes who, or what she is, and with it a huge amount of responsibility.

I thoroughly enjoyed Craven’s fast paced writing and her development of memorable characters. The story itself is very gripping, leaving you wanting more. Her action scenes are incredible, and definitely one of her strengths when it comes to writing. I did feel like the love story took precedence over the rest of the story, and I found myself asking why to one of the characters quite a bit. To me, the love story was a little too much, but I am anxious to see where their journey goes in the sequel.

The world Craven created was truly mesmerizing. I thoroughly enjoyed the ancient stories of where Allie and her kind came from. As I read Emerge I couldn’t help but be eager to find out how the story would end.

I think Emerge is a fantastic debut novel from a first time author and I look forward to reading more from Melissa A. Craven, especially concerning how Allie and Aidan’s stories will turn out.

Melissa A. Craven (the “A” stands for Ann–in case you were wondering) was born near Atlanta, Georgia, but moved to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of seventeen. She still thinks of Cleveland as home, so it was only natural for Emerge to take place there.

Today, she is back in Atlanta–for some reason she can’t seem to stay away from the ungodly heat that makes her long for things like “lake effect snow” and wind that will knock you flat.
Melissa decided a long time ago that the “life checklist” everyone else was clutching so tightly in their fists, just wasn’t for her. She does everything backwards because she is weird like that, but then, she is an artist and artists are notoriously “unique” and “quirky.”

She is an avid student of art and design, and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of West Georgia in 2009. She worked as an interior designer for several years, but she’s always thought she might like to be a writer when she grows up.

In her spare time, if she has any, she enjoys shopping for derelict furniture she refinishes to exercise the interior design part of her brain.

Asher is a Lifer, a slave aboard the spaceship Pelican. A member of the lowest rung of society, she must serve the ship’s Officials and Astronauts as punishment for her grandparents’ crimes back on Earth. The one thing that made life bearable was her illicit relationship with Samuai, a Fishie boy, but he died alongside her brother in a freak training accident.

Still grieving for the loss of her loved ones, Asher is summoned to the upper levels to wait on Lady, the head Official’s wife and Samuai’s mother. It is the perfect opportunity to gather intel for the Lifer’s brewing rebellion. There’s just one problem—the last girl who went to the upper levels never came back.

On the other side of the universe, an alien attack has left Earth in shambles and a group called The Company has taken control. Blank wakes up in a pond completely naked and with no memory, not even his real name. So when a hot girl named Megs invites him to a black-market gaming warehouse where winning means information, he doesn’t think twice about playing. But sometimes the past is better left buried.

As Asher and Blank’s worlds collide, the truth comes out—everyone has been lied to. Bourne Identity meets Under the Never Sky in this intergalactic tale of love and deception from debut novelist Beck Nicholas.

FINAL_ A Murder of Magpies_Bromley

Winter in Black Orchard, Wisconsin, is long and dark, and sixteen-year-old Vayda Silver prays the snow will keep the truth and secrecy of the last two years buried. Hiding from the past with her father and twin brother, Vayda knows the rules: never return to the town of her mother’s murder, and never work a Mind Game where someone might see.

No one can know the toll emotions take on Vayda, how emotion becomes energy in her hands, or how she can’t control the destruction she causes. But it’s not long before her powers can no longer be contained. The truth is dangerously close to being exposed, placing Vayda and her family at risk.

Until someone quiets the chaos inside her.

Unwanted. That’s all Ward Ravenscroft has ever been. To cope, he numbs the pain of rejection by denying himself emotions of any kind. Yet Vayda stirs something in him. He can’t explain the hold she has on him–inspiring him with both hope and fear. He claims not to scare easily, except he doesn’t know what her powers can do. Yet.

Just as Vadya and Ward draw closer, she finds the past isn’t so easily buried. And when it follows the Silvers to Black Orchard, it has murder in mind.

Writer Secrets from Jessie Rosen

DEAD RINGER: Writer Secrets

Hi, book lovers!

If you told my high school self that I would someday write an entire novel, I would have laughed my frizzy-haired head off.

Writing was always my dream, but the beast that is a book seemed impossible before I had a strong handle on how to tackle 300+ pages…and survive. DEAD RINGER is officially the longest project of my entire career, and I am somehow still in one piece. In fact, I’m already at work on another.

Here are my 7 Secret Strategies for combating all the woes of life as a long-form writer.

  1. Develop a routine based on your existing routine.

Morning person? Write first thing in the a.m. Night owl? Type all night long. Much of finding your mojo as a writer has to do with knowing your MO as a person. I get my best work done in the morning, so I write from 8:00 a.m. until noon every single day. That’s the other part of developing a routine—doing it over and over and over again until it becomes comfortable. Writing is a muscle, so think of it like going to the gym. The more you go, the less it hurts.

  1. Set a word count every day and hit it.

All hail the crappy first draft! The best thing you can do for your finished product is get a first draft of it done quickly. Writing is rewriting, so there will be many more drafts. When I get hung up, it’s because I’m trying to make every single sentence perfect instead of focusing on getting my word count done so I can move on to the next stage.

  1. When writer’s block hits, don’t panic. Pivot.

I don’t like to use the term “block” when talking about a hiccup in my flow because it feels so severe. I’m not blocked; I’m just a little cloudy. Instead of freaking out (my former philosophy), I stop writing in the prose of the book and start writing to myself. It comes out looking something like this: Yo. This part is really hard but remember what you’re trying to say is simple: Laura is frustrated with Charlie. Why is she frustrated? You know why. It’s because x, y, z.

I know this seems so strange, but this no-writing writing actually helps me remember that I know my road map and I’m just having trouble finding the right words. In a worst-case scenario, I leave some notes in the manuscript and come back to them another day. It’s not a finished word count, but at least I’ve made some progress.  For more on this check out a blog post I wrote on the topic.

  1. Outline, outline, outline

This should probably be item number one. I know that some writers prefer plunging to plotting, but even when I employ that tactic I still create an outline of what I’ve written. In a 300+ page document, you need a map of where plot and character development is located. When an editor returns notes, you need to know where to begin making adjustments. Your outline is that full picture of the book, and it is critical.

  1. Don’t wait to ask for feedback

It might seem like there’s nothing scarier than receiving notes, but there’s actually nothing more frustrating than finding out you have major issues to resolve once an entire draft is done! I bring people into the process early (my outline helps) so I’m certain that I’m tracking problems and progress along the way. Somehow a lot of little notes are easier to handle than one massive dump.

  1. End each day with a plan for the next

When I was writing the first draft of DEAD RINGER, I spent thirty minutes every night making notes about what I was going to tackle writing the next day. This wasn’t actual drafting of the manuscript, just a bulleted list of notes about what would happen in the next chapter. I felt so much better arriving at a new blank page the next day knowing that I had a plan.

  1. Celebrate along the way

Writing a novel is a massive, massive task. Why wait to celebrate until the very end? I treated myself to little prizes along the way as rewards for finishing small chunks, and I gave myself big gifts after turning in 100-page installments to my editor. There were many hard days, but I gave myself lots to look forward to. That way, I had little tunnels with bright lights all throughout the process.

For more on the things that got me through, check out this blog post.

Trust me—if I can do this, you can do this! Stay focused. Make your writing your priority. And remember what the great Jimmy Dugan (aka Tom Hanks) from A League of Their Own said, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it.”

Good luck!

-Jessie Rosen

Book Excerpt:

My heart pounded on the walls of my chest, reverberating through my ears as I neared the door. I began to feel faint. I grabbed the handle with my damp palms and twisted slowly, and then in one quick motion, I whipped the door open.

My heart beat slowed when I found nothing in the storage room but a bunch of boxes. I switched off the light and let the door fall shut with a click.

Once I was back in the dark hallway by myself and ready to leave, the humming noise caught my attention once again. What was that? I followed the sound and pressed my ear against the door that led to the break room.

I could hear muffled voices, but I didn’t see a light under the door. Who was in there? The sound, I realized, was a woman humming a stagnant note.

“We’re here to help you,” Sophie’s voice rang over the humming.

I didn’t take a moment to consider what they were doing behind the door. Once I was sure it was my mother and her friends, I wasn’t scared anymore.

I had only a split second to take in the scene. The three girls sat in a circle around the break table, their hands connected as if in prayer. Candles lit up their faces. Just beyond the table stood another girl with blonde hair and brown eyes. Olivia Owen’s ghost stared back at me with that same look of urgency.

Illuminae Teaser

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1)

by Amie Kaufman (Goodreads Author), Jay Kristoff (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Quote 1:

“The universe owes you nothing, Kady. It has already given you everything, after all. It was here long before you, and it will go on long after you. The only way it will remember you is to do something worth remembrance.”
Amie Kaufman, Illuminae

Quote 2:

“You deserve every star in the galaxy laid out at your feet and a thousand diamonds in your hair. You deserve someone who’ll run with you as far and as fast as you want to. Holding your hand, not holding you back.”
Jay Kristoff, Illuminae

Quote 3:

“You have me. Until the last star in the galaxy dies, you have me.”
Jay Kristoff, Illuminae

Quote 4:

“I should have told you I loved you every day. I should have given you the stars.”
Amie Kaufman, Illuminae

The Phoenix Born

Excerpt

The Phoenix Born – Chapter 10

Jinji stopped him by grabbing his cheeks and pulling his face against hers, kissing him urgently. Rhen tried to pull away, to understand why she wasn’t thrilled by the news, but her hands traveled to the back of his neck, grip tight, and he couldn’t break her hold. Her lips moved fast against his, pleading with him silently. Everything about her was desperately trying to hold on to the moment, to stop time, as though she were drowning and the air from his lungs was the only thing that might save her, as though he were her tether to life.

Rhen wanted to give in. More than anything, he wanted to melt beneath her touch and forget the world, to kiss her until the sun rose the next morning, and even then maybe not stop. He could so easily get lost in the fire of her touch, the silkiness of her skin.

But he couldn’t let himself.

The woman he loved was in pain.

Her kiss wasn’t full of passion. It was full of dread. Rhen sensed the dark taste on his tongue.

“Jin,” he mumbled against her lips.

But she didn’t stop.

Rhen reached back, unlatching her fingers, pulling her forcibly away from him, finding her eyes. “Jin?”

And with that word, she couldn’t avoid what was in her heart any longer. A tear rolled down her cheek, and she gave in, collapsing against him as her body racked with sobs. The moans came from a dark place within her, ripping their way up her throat, making him wince at the sound.

Rhen wanted to demand answers.

He wanted to force her to explain, to let him in, to tell him what had her so distraught.

But he didn’t.

He just held her, kissing her forehead and rubbing her back. Not questioning. Not demanding. There would be time for answers later. Right now, Jinji needed a shoulder to cry on and nothing more. He gave that to her, embracing her until sleep claimed them both.

 Book Excerpt:

Kian pulled into a well-worn dirt path off the main road, almost hidden by the thick press of trees on both sides. Both of us bounced in our seats with each pot-hole hit as the headlights danced through the trees. A smart retort was on the tip of my tongue as we broke through the thicket in a small clearing, but when Kian parked the car next to the lake I forced my lips together and swallowed my unspoken remark.

I jumped out of the car instead of waiting on him and his chivalry. Stars dotted the clear night sky and the full moon was exceedingly bright tonight. Both reflected off the blackened still waters of the lake like a mirror. The view was cleansing to my soul. A tear escaped as I marveled at the celestial view. It was magical.

A pair of strong arms snaked around my waist before I felt Kian’s warm body press against mine. He rested his chin on my shoulder and in this moment there was only the two of us. Existing in harmony with the universe. With no death. No Fears. Just the void above us and the Earth below, with the two of us secured in their warm embrace.

Kian was the first to break the silence. “Happy?”

I twisted in his arms, turning around to where I could see his face. He looked more supernatural than man with the glow of the moon bouncing off his goldenrod hair. “More than I have been in a long time.” I paused and brushed some of his unruly curls out of his eyes. “Thank you.”

zPTBtWGM7PDvtGuqLQ5u7feLAOEFuHGQr1_j9RLka1EFrom the moment Laura Rivers steps foot into Englewood High, she notices the stares-and they aren’t the typical once-overs every pretty new girl endures. The students seem confused and…spooked. Whispers echoing through the halls confirm that something is seriously off. “That new girl looks just like her,” they say.

It turns out Laura has a doppelgänger, and it isn’t just anyone—it’s Sarah Castro-Tanner, the girl who killed herself by jumping into the Navasink River one year ago.

Laura is determined not to let the gossip ruin her chances of making a fresh start.

Thanks to her charming personality and California tan, she catches the eye of Englewood’s undisputed golden boy, Charlie Sanders, and it’s only a matter of time before they make their relationship official.

But something is making Charlie and his friends paranoid—and Laura soon discovers it has to do with Sarah Castro-Tanner.

What really happened to Sarah? Why is Charlie unraveling? And how does Laura Rivers fit into it all? After all, she’s the dead ringer for a dead girl.

Laura

Deep breath, big smile, and remember: it’s all about swag.

Laura laughed at her reflection in the little compact she kept in her bag for touch-ups and pep talks. The word “swag” sounded so ridiculous. That’s what made it the perfect mantra for day one of her senior year of high school—the very first time she would be “the new girl.”

Laura had been dreaming about her entrance into Englewood High since it was decided that’s where she would spend this year—three thousand miles away from her previous home.

The move was a big change, but she welcomed the clean slate. It was time to focus her energy on everything but the demons of the typical high school girl—the kind she’d been her whole life: a wallflower and a pleaser. She was over the precarious balance between wearing something trendy but not so “out there” that people might talk. She was tired of being meek because battling the Queen Bees seemed too scary. And the days of hiding her natural smarts were over. Laura felt like high school was a tricky series of hoops she had to jump through before she could finally live on her own. So if high school isn’t for me, she’d decided, why let all its silly rules run my life?

That was Laura’s final thought as she stepped out of her vintage, black BMW convertible and glanced around at the other cars in the student parking lot. She’d debated the car purchase as soon as she arrived on the East coast. Convertibles are so obnoxiously California, she’d thought, but then she reminded herself that worrying about what everyone else thought was exactly the spiral she was trying to avoid. Besides, she worshipped that car and had saved every penny she could for almost two years to buy it. So what if people assumed it was a gift from her parents? She’d inform them that she bought it with a combo of waitressing tips from Joe’s Café right on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, and money saved from fit modeling for the Rosefox denim line in downtown LA. No one would expect that. From what Laura knew of Englewood, most of the other BMWs in the lot would be brand-new sweet-sixteen gifts.

And yet the very first thing that caught her eye when Laura drove into the senior parking lot was another old car with its convertible top down. This one was cherry red and looked like it drove right out of a 90s music video, but it was in almost perfect condition. Apparently at least one other person in this town had to buy their own ride, Laura thought as she gave her reflection in the car window one final check.

For the first time in forever, she had decided to wear her long, blond hair down and parted on the far-left side so a waterfall of curls danced over her right eye, the slightly bluer one—the one that usually made her self-conscious. Today she let the curls do their thing instead of making sure every piece of frizz was locked down with an army of gooey hair products. She wore simple makeup paired with a shocking pink lipstick she’d seen on the girls strolling the pier all summer long. It was wild, but it made her feel powerful. Her first-day outfit was a 1960s floral shirt belted over a flirty, white sundress to make sure her tan legs showed, because why not milk the Cali-girl vibe? On her feet were cork-soled wedges in a neon-colored, striped print from 1989—one of her favorite vintage finds besides the car, of course. She was pretty sure she wouldn’t look like anyone at this posh, brick-and-ivy-covered, suburban New Jersey school, and she loved that fact. She was ready to start out on a totally new foot.

But just as Laura’s first-day confidence finally locked in, it vanished.

Across the parking lot, she caught the glance of two girls getting out of a shiny, white Corvette. Laura smiled in their direction, but something was off about the way they both looked back at her. Their faces were frozen in a strange, almost confused look that made her instantly uncomfortable. It was more than just the usual new-kid-in-school stares.

It wasn’t until the shorter, curly-haired girl glanced back and quickly turned away again that Laura saw the real feeling behind her eyes: she was scared.

* * *

“Rivers? Do we have a Laura Rivers? Hello, hello? Miss Rivers?”

Laura slipped into first period AP English just as the bell rang. Ms. O’Malley stood at the front of the room, just as skinny and evil-looking as all the online reviews claimed. She barely looked up from her attendance sheet as she barked. If she had, she would have seen twenty-four sets of eyes staring directly at Laura, and she would have also noticed that something was off.

As with those girls in the parking lot, there was something about these stares that gave Laura instant goose bumps. It was like everyone who saw her had the exact same thought. The only way she could think to describe the looks on their faces was spooked.

“Yes. Hi!” Laura said, trying her best to push through the awkward moment.

“Try to get here before the bell rings tomorrow,” Ms. O’Malley said. “I have you all seated alphabetically, so go take a seat behind…hmm, let me see…”

Laura scanned the room for empty desks. There were two open seats where students with last names beginning with R might fall. One was directly behind a way-too-friendly looking cheerleader type. She gave Laura a fairly convincing fake smile, but Laura took it with a grain of salt. Girls like that were skilled at the art of playing instant besties.

Then Laura’s eyes hit the person sitting behind the only other open chair, and instantly locked. It was as if there was a magnetic field around him; if you stayed far enough away it wouldn’t suck you in, but once you looked, you were done.

“Charlie Sanders,” Ms. O’Malley finally bellowed. “Charlie, raise your hand for the new girl to see.”

That wasn’t necessary—Laura had already found him. In the time it took him to lift his hand, she’d already stared through his dark-brown eyes, his knife’s-edge cheek bones, his messy- but-not-on-purpose chestnut hair, and his wide, toothy smile. She had to clench every muscle in her body to stop herself from giggling as he smiled politely in her direction.

But in the time it took for Charlie’s hand to fall back at his side, that smile was gone.

Laura saw the switch go off in his head and the confusion land on his face. It was the same creeped-out reaction she’d prompted so far that morning. Charlie’s version of the gaze was by far the most intense, but it was also the shortest. He almost instantly reverted back to a wide, comfortable smile. Either he has better manners than the rest of my classmates, Laura thought, or he’s the best actor.

“I’m Charlie,” he said as she took her seat.

“So I’ve heard,” she teased. “I’m Laura…the new girl.”

“So I’ve heard,” Charlie shot back. “Welcome to Englewood. It isn’t all that bad. Where’d you move from?”

“Los Angeles.”

“Oh. In that case, this place sucks,” Charlie said.

“Way to welcome the newbie…” Laura joked, and Charlie smiled back. Then Ms. O’Malley demanded all eyes on the front of the room and started rambling about the fact that Shakespeare was probably a woman.

Laura breathed a sigh of relief. For the next forty or so minutes she didn’t have to worry about what Charlie was thinking of her, or try to hide what she was thinking about him. It wasn’t until Charlie tapped her on the shoulder to pass him a copy of the homework assignment circulating around the room that Laura’s heart started pounding again. She caught him off guard when she turned around, and he had that same instant reaction to her face. For the first time, Laura put her finger on what was so strange about it.

He was looking at her like he knew her.
