The Third Dawn is an inspirational story of Jesus the Messiah and his early life. Nichols draws upon scripture from the New Testament to bring this story to life. It was neat to dive into the world back then, to see history of another time, and to experience what Jesus as a child must have been like. I really enjoyed seeing Jesus as a boy and seeing his relationship with his mother Mary. 

It was really interesting to have the character Nur introduced to the family. They take him in as his own. To see their bond, their brotherhood, and Nur take on the role of big brother to Jesus, his faith in him, and his devotion was very beautiful. What would it have been like to be Jesus’ brother? Nur is a great character to fill in that question and we really see the strength in their family and the love they share for each other. 

It was fascinating to read about their travels as they grew older. To see the world through their eyes and experience how life was back then. I’m not a very religious person but I enjoyed the aspect of their brotherly relationship and the history of what life was like back then. 

The story is told through Jesus’ entire life, including the crucifixion and resurection and what occurs after. We hear this story told by Nur, Jesus, and Mary. I loved the different POV’s. Nichols is by far a creative story teller and each character had a strong presence in sharing their stories. Nichols writing is told with depth, with faith, and with vivid imagery that pulls the reader in from the very beginning. 

Nichols has created something truly precious for history and religious fans alike. This is a beautiful, biblical story of Jesus, taken from Scripture but woven into a story unlike anything I have ever read before. I appreciate the story for what it is and I think others would really enjoy it!

I was completely blown away by this book! Set in San Antonio in 1868, Emma and her sister set up an orphanage that they through their whole heart into and will do anything to protect. When her new neighbor, Stone Landry moves in, she simply cannot stand him. But over time their end goals align, and they do what they can to fight for their land. 

The character’s in this story were truly the magic of the book. I found myself invested in each and every one of them. This book had so much to offer, but the characters really drove this story home for me. 

I really loved the chemistry between Emma and Stone. Their banter was leaving me wanting more and more between them and kept me up late some times. I loved how their love story evolved and how they became a formidable team at the end. 

I also really enjoyed Emma’s connection and time she spends with the children at the orphanage. This really brought warmth to my heart and it seeing Emma’s love for the children really made her fighting for their land mean so much more. She was not just fighting for the land, but for the children that lived there so they could have a place to live. 

What a beautiful story! I couldn’t put this one down so be sure to check it out!

There’s anticipation to the upcoming mum celebrations. Knowing that soon the mini-parade of mums will showcase the halls and events. I remember my mom’s face when she asked me how big I wanted my mum to be, just slightly frightened by the answer. Afterall, the bigger the mum, the bigger the bragging rights. Thankfully for her, I let her know I wasn’t expecting anything over the top. Did it still end up being nearly the size of my head and longer than my torso? Yes. Yes it did.

There was an informal tradition within it though. That mums were meant to be shared. If your friend didn’t have one and wanted to experience it, simply pluck a ribbon and flower from yours and hand it over. Have safety pins in your pocket and great memories to remember years later.

It was hilarious at times hearing the accounts of someone not Texas-born reminiscing about our odd traditions, particularly this one. In fact, it seemed quite common to me growing up. While I never had to huge desire to embrace some of the more Texas sized traditions, it didn’t seem to be odd to me. Though, that could be stemmed from my mom working for the school district and such thing as mums, homecomings, and pep rallies are just normal and happen all the time.

I am very impressed by the detail to history and self experience by the author. What better way to bring a tradition like this more alive than hearing from Schultz herself? There’s joy and humor to this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was a bit like a beginners guide to this niche.

The pictures were a great addition as well. As a reader, you’ll notice quickly that happiness ties them together. The excitement of each subject flying off the page. Schultz goes into the why and how this tradition came to be. From my experience, a lot of this stems from the happiness and silliness it brings. It was very interesting to read about the way mums have spread over Texas and over states as well.
