The Infected (PODs #2)
by Michelle K. Pickett
Release Date: October 12th 2015

Summary from Goodreads:

From the author of the award winning Unspeakable, and the best selling PODs, comes the highly anticipated sequel to PODs. A world where death stalks the unsuspecting, and this time even the PODs might not save them.

A virus nearly wiped out humankind…

Months have passed since a human infection has been reported. Survivors of the deadly pandemic have finally started to build a life in a world left devastated by plague.

Ironically, for nineteen-year-old Eva, life made more sense when she battled the deadly Infected than it does in the serenity of her new home in Rosewood. Separated from fiancé and former POD-mate, David, after an impossible ultimatum, Eva finds her life a little lonely and a lot confusing.

But as troubled as Eva’s life is, it’s about to take a turn for the worse as untold dangers watch and wait for the right moment to attack…

The virus refuses to die quietly.

About the Author

I can’t write without a hoodie. Yeah, I live it Texas. We all have our quirks.

I majored in accounting in college. I was required to declare a major, but I had no clue what I wanted to do, so I picked accounting because it was the first thing listed in the booklet the counselor gave me. Surprisingly, I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Go figure.

Forget coffee. Hand over the Red Bull or Monster Khaos and no one gets hurt. Seriously, just set it down and step away. I will turn into a normal human after I guzzle my can of caffeine.

I hate to cook, but love to watch cooking shows on television.

I paint my nails weird colors just to see my husband roll his eyes and make my 9 year-old twin girls giggle. Oh, and mortify my 13 year-old son.

I’m a hopeful romantic and love swoon-worthy endings that keep the butterflies going for days, but I don’t believe a HEA always ends with the boy getting the girl. Sometimes a HEA is an ending we don’t see coming, but is still best for the characters.

I write across genres in the young adult and new adult age groups while eating way too many peanut butter M&Ms (but we’ll keep that second part just between us).

I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, but now live in a suburb of Houston, TX with my very supportive family, a 125lb rescue “puppy” and a 12lb attack cat, also a rescue animal.

And last, (but certainly not least), I love my family with everything in me. Everything I am, is theirs. There are no words in any language known to man to describe my love for them. They are my center.

I’d love to hear from you. So drop me an email! Let’s chat. You tell me what you like in books, what you’d like to see happen in the writing community, what type of books you like to see more of…less of—I want to hear it all! So tell me, please. Because the one thing I wish I could put on my list, but I still haven’t figured out how to do, is mind-reading. But don’t tell my kids. I still have them fooled. 🙂

Please provide your official author bio/summary.

Jessie Rosen is a writer, producer, and performer. Since 2007 she has written the blog 20-Nothings.com – a TIME TOP 25 Blog and named among the Top 100 Websites for Women and Top 10 Websites for Millennials by FORBES. She lives in Los Angeles, where she’s working on film and television projects, as well as her next novel.

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you begin writing? What inspires you to write?

I have always been writing. It started with little stories my mom would “publish” between pieces of cardboard cut up from cereal boxes, morphed into journalism at college and then expanded to blogging, TV/film writing and this novel most recently. I am inspired to write by hearing stories that move me and deserve to be told. I have always understood myself and the world through characters and stories. So not only do I want to give my readers something to enjoy but I also hope to change their perspective or offer them a vantage point they’ll take with them long after they finish the book.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

My intended audience is YA lovers who enjoy a twisty tale that turns into a very wild ride. I’ve always thought about DEAD RINGER as a GONE GIRL meets PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, so lovers of those amazing titles will hopefully love this book, too.

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

The team at Full Fathom Five (my publisher) and I did a lot of brainstorming about a title that would be instantly catchy and instantly clear. The idea of my main character Laura Rivers being a dead ringer for a dead girl is the whole crux of the story, so the title felt like a perfect fit.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

Full Fathom works with amazing artists, one of whom came up with this concept. The goal was to make the cover instantly intriguing and, frankly, creepy. With the darkness of the cover we wanted to convey maturity and the fact that this really is a thriller. The legs in the water only added to that whoa factor. But my favorite part is the pink toe nail polish. Just a little splash of color to remind you this is a YA tale.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

Ooh this is tough. I think my favorite character is Sasha because I wish I were as genius as she is when it comes to her special skills (that I can’t possibly reveal…). Sasha is also the character that remains a mystery for much of the book so she was really fun to write.

How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?

Hm I don’t know if I have a least favorite character but I certainly don’t agree with a lot of the things that Amanda does in the story. She has a motivation so I understand why she does what she does (and did what she did in the past), but I would never follow that same path.

If you could change ONE thing about your novel, what would it be? Why?

Great question! I think I would like to spend more time at Laura’s house getting to know her and her world a little better. We see her mostly in school and outside of school with Charlie, but a bit more about her environment would be nice to paint an even clearer picture of this new girl.

Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:

Almost every single name in the book is the name of a real person, same goes for all the towns and places. I’m from New Jersey where the book is set, and I wanted to give my friends some fun “easter eggs” to find in the book.

Another fun fact: I wrote the book while raising my puppy. Louie arrived at 8 weeks old right around the time that I started working on DEAD RINGER, and by the time I was finished he was a well-behaved pup! I should have thanked him in the acknowledgements!

What other books are similar to your own? What makes them alike?

The Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl series remind me of my book. Also Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver and Conspiracy Girl by Sarah Alderson. The former are in a similar tone as my novel and paint a similar posh world. The latter deal with equally intense issues and unfold in an equally twisty way. I also really looked to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn for inspiration on dealing with multiple narrators.

How can we contact you or find out more about your books?

Examples: Webpages and/or social media

DEAD RINGER is all over the web, as am I! Here are some handles:

@DeadRingerBook on Twitter and Instagra

www.DeadRingerBook.com

I am @20Nothings on Twitter and @JessieRosen on Instagram and my blog is www.20-Nothings.com

What can we expect from you in the future?

Hopefully two more books in the DEAD RINGER series! I’m also tackling an emerging adult novel right now. It’s an epic love story set against a major national tragedy, and it all takes place in 72 hours.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

Share, share, share! Whether it’s placing it on your GoodReads shelf, adding it to your blog list or Tweeting/Instagramming your love to friends. Every little bit is so helpful.

Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?

Two tips:

Write, write, write. The more you write the easier that writing becomes. Writing is a muscle and if you exercise it, it will get stronger.

Know the market. I did a TON of reading before embarking on this project and it really helped me understand what YA readers (and readers overall) were enjoying and how I could create a story that both tied into my passions and ideas but also found a place in the world.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

I’d like to say THANK YOU for your support and that I have been overwhelmed by the support and appreciate from the entire book-lover community. I always knew the book lovers were fantastic people, and it’s proven every day that I work toward my release date!

And now, before you go, how about a snippet from your book that is meant to intrigue and tantalize us:

Here you go!

For the first time in forever, she had decided to wear her long, blond hair down and parted on the far-left side so a waterfall of curls danced over her right eye, the slightly bluer one—the one that usually made her self-conscious. Today she let the curls do their thing instead of making sure every piece of frizz was locked down with an army of gooey hair products. She wore simple makeup paired with a shocking pink lipstick she’d seen on the girls strolling the pier all summer long. It was wild, but it made her feel powerful. Her first day outfit was a vintage, floral shirt belted over a flirty, white sundress to make sure her tan legs showed, because why not milk the Cali-girl vibe? On her feet were cork-soled wedges in a neon-colored, striped print from 1989—one of her favorite vintage finds besides the car, of course. She was pretty sure she wouldn’t look like anyone at this posh, brick-and-ivy-covered, suburban New Jersey school, and she loved that fact. She was ready to start out on a totally new foot.

But just as Laura’s first-day confidence finally locked in, it vanished.

Across the parking lot, she caught the glance of two girls getting out of a shiny, white Corvette. Laura smiled in their direction, but something was off about the way they both looked back at her. Their faces were frozen in a strange, almost confused look that made her instantly uncomfortable. It was more than just the usual new-kid-in-school stares.

It wasn’t until the shorter, curly-haired girl glanced back and quickly turned away again that Laura saw the real feeling behind her eyes: she was scared.

Book Summary (Goodreads):

From the moment Laura Rivers steps foot into Englewood High, she notices the stares—and they aren’t the typical once-overs every pretty new girl endures. The students seem confused and…spooked. Whispers echoing through the halls confirm that something is seriously off. “That new girl looks just like her,” they say.

It turns out Laura has a doppelgänger, and it isn’t just anyone—it’s Sarah Castro-Tanner, the girl who killed herself by jumping into the Navasink River one year ago.

Laura is determined not to let the gossip ruin her chances of making a fresh start. Thanks to her charming personality and California tan, she catches the eye of Englewood’s undisputed golden boy, Charlie Sanders, and it’s only a matter of time before they make their relationship official.

But something is making Charlie and his friends paranoid—and Laura soon discovers it has to do with Sarah Castro-Tanner.

What really happened to Sarah? Why is Charlie unraveling? And how does Laura Rivers fit into it all?

After all, she’s the dead ringer for a dead girl.

My Review:

I simply loved this book. From the very beginning it’s a gripping read. Once you get about a third of the way through the book it is non-stop, filled with action, love, and suspense. I can’t even put into words how incredible this book is. It was a wonderfully designed plot, and intricate characters. If you like apocalyptic, science fiction stories filled with aliens and the end of the world scenarios, and an incredible love story than this book is definitely for you!

Cassie.
Not Cassie for Cassandra.
Not simply Cassie.
But Cassie for Cassiopeia.

Evan Walker.
Not just a farm boy.
Not just a boy who has lost his entire family.
But Evan. Complicated. Conflicted.

Ben Parish.
Not just your average jock.
Not just a boy Cassie used to have a crush on.
But a soldier. Honest. True. Honorable.

These three have survived the first four waves from the aliens that came from the skies. The waves had wiped out most of humanity, but still, these three survived somehow. Cassie is alone, trying her best to survive, not really sure where to go or what to do to get her brother back. And as she travels she has flashbacks from their arrival. Flashbacks of what happened to her mother, her father, people that survived the first four waves and made a camp together. Along her journey of trying to figure out what to do Cassie is shot by a silencer and left for dead. But Evan, farm boy, shy, sweet Evan finds her and helps her. Evan and Cassie are instantly drawn to each other, their attraction for each other undeniable. Evan encourages Cassie to stay with him, that he’ll take care of her, that going after her brother is suicidal, but Cassie won’t be swayed. She has to rescue her brother even if it means her death. Just one problem, Evan refuses to let her go without him. Together they set out to rescue Sammy, but secrets and betrayal surround them. Despite it all, Cassie has to do whatever it takes to save her baby brother. Still the question lingers, can they infiltrate Camp Haven and save her brother from the inevitable 5th wave?

Meanwhile, in Camp Haven, Ben has miraculously survived the virus and is trained to be a soldier. The soldiers at Camp Haven have uncovered a horrible truth. Ben suits up, stricken with grief over the death of his family, but pushes his sorrow way down inside of himself. He trains, hard. Desperate to get back at the aliens that took so much from him. He befriends the members in his squad, and they become a formidable team. Once they’ve completed their training, they are sent out on a mission to take care of alien hostiles. But what they find is an undeniable truth. A truth so dark, it turns your insides out.

Inside the camp and outside the camp the world is crumbling and people are turning on people, all because of the horrible things the aliens have done to them. But despite it all, can these three overcome all of this and save the one thing they have in common? A little boy that has come to mean so much to them. To Cassie, her brother. To Ben, his friend and a promise he refuses to break. And to Evan, what it means to be human.

I simply couldn’t put this book down. I read this book because I saw the movie trailer and just couldn’t believe how exciting it seemed. The book is amazing, gripping, with a wonderful fast paced plot, completely action packed, a great love story that is gripping and intense, truly marvelous memorable characters and so much more. Be sure to check it out before the movie comes out in January. And just in case you haven’t seen the trailer be sure to check it out too!

Book Excerpt:

Are there beings with the ability to shift forms?” he asked.

She reached out a hand to caress his serious face and laughed lightly. “Why would you ask me that?”

“Tell me, would I know if I saw one?”

“You are serious.” She stood, letting the moonlight filter through the waves of her waist-length hair. “Changers are old beings from the beginning of time, the last scraps of the creator’s spark which formed this World. You would be unlikely to meet one, for they are above us; too distinguished to flirt with the people groups and too haughty to lower themselves to live with the immortals.” Her long fingers rested on the balcony, gripping it tightly as she continued. “If you ever met one it would be unexplainable. They have two forms which makes them indestructible. One is physical and another is spirit.”

“Would you know if you met a Changer?” he pressed. “Are they dangerous?”

She laughed again, her voice rippling gently through the air like the tinkling of silver bells on a crisp night. “Dangerous? There are no creatures in the World more powerful or dangerous.”

“What if I met a Changer. What should I do?”

She turned back to him, bending to take his face in her hands. Her intense gaze met his questioning eyes. “Run as fast as you can and never stop.”

I HATE PINATAS
Surviving Life’s Unexpected Surprises
A Memoir

by
Heather Maloy

Heart surgery doesn’t happen in a vacuum. This is what Heather Maloy learned first-hand when her son, Colman, was diagnosed in utero with a combination of congenital heart defects which are fatal without surgical intervention. I Hate Piñatas is a compelling story of hope and strength that vacillates between heartbreaking and outrageously funny as Maloy takes you through what three heart surgeries in three years looked like for one family.

Author’s Note: I Hate Piñatas is not an inspirational book, but rather a true and honest account of what we went through as a family. In my quest to keep it real, there are curse words contained within the story. However, it’s my hope that this book will leave you feeling inspired.

Kirkus Review

Maloy bares her heart (and sometimes her teeth) in an honest debut that’s both snarky and sweet.
It’s hard to imagine that a memoir about a baby with a rare heart defect could make readers laugh. But that’s what “Crazy Heart Mama” Maloy’s blunt South Texas voice does. Sometimes her irreverent humor feels more like whistling in the dark; e.g., when first finding out that something could be wrong with her baby, she sadly wonders if he’ll be a “bobblehead.” Other times, her gritty humor is a pressure valve releasing stress, albeit in a juvenile way, such as when she felt like telling her mother-in-law to “go eat a giant bag of dicks.” And there are a few startling admissions; for example, when sick baby Colman wouldn’t sleep, she almost called him a “little fucker.” But honesty is the beauty of Maloy’s to-the-point voice. What sleep-deprived mom hasn’t fantasized—even with a healthy baby—about handing her screaming bundle of poop to somebody else for eight hours? The fact is that when Colman was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and a leaky valve, Maloy rolled up her sleeves and became his biggest advocate. Describing Colman’s condition as being born with “half a heart,” Maloy adroitly details the excruciating choices she and her husband had to make. None of the options were good. The author’s brusque voice may make some readers flinch—at times, even her family thought she was cold—but there’s no doubt that she dearly loves her son. Whether it was caring for Colman’s bloody hernia, being covered in projectile vomit, or waiting through surgery during which her baby would be clinically dead, Maloy’s well-written, heart-rending story spares no detail.
A heartbreaking, inspirational account.

Heather Maloy works full-time as a court reporter in district court and writes sporadically on her blog, Crazy Heart Mama.

She lives in San Antonio, Texas with her husband, three boys, and their dog Buster, who doesn’t seem to mind that none of his people are dog people.

Jackson and Nekkar narrowly escape the beasts together, but Nekkar blames the Son of Earth for releasing the present darkness in Arcas. The rocky, new friendship strengthens as they journey through dangerous lands toward the Free Realms. Can their loyalties survive when the beautifully gutsy Princess Andromeda interrupts their quest and the darkness of war batters their souls?

While Rigel, Otava, and Merope work together to rescue the six sisters trapped at the White Palace, Sephdar returns from shadowy crusades to find White Wings’ army leaderless. The new self-proclaimed ruler has a plan for the Seven Sisters and a plan for The Bridge to Earth. But when his ambitious arrows pierce the peaceful kingdoms, an unlikely force confronts the dark lord and the future of the crowns is changed forever.

Hold to your axe and hold to your lass as you join Jackson to combat the darkness spreading through the world of Arcas. But remember, the most powerful arrows do not pierce the body but the soul.

Excerpt

“Mark the door!” Scruuutch. “The queen’s not in this room!” Scruuutch. An axe scraped across a heavy wooden door each time a room was cleared. “Someone’s alive! Come quickly!” another shouted for help.

King Alderamin squeezed the handle of his axe until his knuckles blanched. He could no longer control the passion inside him. Water flowed to his eyes while anger fought like a dam to hold back the flood of sorrow. With no destination in mind, he began running, running, running through the glass and the blood and the toppled bricks. He had arrived too late to outrun the enemy, but perhaps he could outrun the guilt.

Suddenly, the scenery changed. Everything felt untouched as he reached the back hallway. Every mirror was still perfectly intact, every wall still standing. And there was his light brown face in image after image with blood-shot, yellow-brown eyes looking back at him.

“RAAAAAHHHH!” He viciously swung his axe right and left, shattering each image that now looked detestable and pathetic to him. Crash! Crash! Crash! Shards of glass blasted from the sharpened edge of his axe as it collided with the mirrors covering every wall. But the last unblemished mirror that he swung the heavy weapon into didn’t respond as the others. His axe didn’t just sink into the glass; it sunk into the wall itself. The king jerked and yanked, but the iron head stuck firmly. In anger and frustration, he kicked the mirrored wall.

Click-click. Alderamin froze as the wall sprang open. Grabbing the edge of the solid door that was hiding behind a reflective façade, memories fell upon him like rain saturating a thirsty ground. I know this place, he realized, peering into the dusky staircase. Entering the dim passage, he slowly exhaled and inhaled to tame the wild breath of emotions that exited his lungs moments ago. For a moment, the world behind faded.

His fingers traced along the stones on the passageway, but what he felt was a hand interlocked in his, pulling him forward. Pulling him Down.

Ransom Canyon Author Interview

From New York Times bestselling author Jodi Thomas comes the first book in a compelling, emotionally resonant series set in a remote west Texas town—where family can be made by blood or by choice.
Rancher Staten Kirkland, the last descendant of Ransom Canyon’s founding father, is rugged and practical to the last. No one knows that when his troubling memories threaten to overwhelm him, he runs to lovely, reclusive Quinn O’Grady…or that she has her own secret that no one living knows.
Young Lucas Reyes has his eye on the prize—college, and the chance to become something more than a ranch hand’s son. But one night, one wrong decision, will set his life on a course even he hadn’t imagined.
Yancy Grey is running hard from his troubled past. He doesn’t plan to stick around Ransom Canyon, just long enough to learn the town’s weaknesses and how to use them for personal gain. Only Yancy, a common criminal since he was old enough to reach a car’s pedals, isn’t prepared for what he encounters.
In this dramatic new series, the lives, loves and ambitions of four families will converge, set against a landscape that can be as unforgiving as it is beautiful, where passion, property and pride are worth fighting—and even dying—for.

Author Interview

Did you always want to be a writer?

No.  I didn’t read until the 4th grade and English was my worst subject.  But, I loved listening to stories and once I learned to read I felt like I lived in libraries for years.  I think we never know what is best in life.  Maybe my not reading all those years helped my imagination grow.

What were some of your favorite childhood stories/books?

I skipped most of the children’s books in the library. The books I loved reading to by boys started with the Berenstein Bears,(the Spooky old Tree) Charlotte’s Web, The Giving Tree, Where the Wild Things Are, Goodnight Moon.

Texas plays a big part of much of your work.  Some people even say that Texas is so big that it is, itself, a character.  What’s your response to this?

Never ask a Texan about their state.  They’ll never stop talking.

Cowboys and romance go together so perfectly.  What is it about cowboys?

For me it’s a way of life.  I set of rules a cowboy lives by.  A quirky sense of humor.  A work ethic.  Who doesn’t love a man in a Stetson.

As Writer in Residence at West Texas A&M, what is the most common question asked of you from students?

Most common question when I lecture:  Where do your ideas come from?  I tell them I really don’t know.  I’ve had stories dancing in my head as long as I can remember.  I maintain a loose grip on reality.

Writing students ask:  Can you make a living as a writer?  My answer:  I’ve been doing it for over twenty years.  If you work at it half as hard as you would an 8 to 5 job you can get rich writing.

Who would you say is your biggest influence in your writing?

I’ve always loved romance starting with Barbara Cartland when I borrowed my mother’s books.  She always read the Harlequins that came every month in the mail and I never missed one.  My father read Louis L’Amour and so did I.  I guess I was meant to write western romance from the beginning.

What has been your favorite part about being an author?

I love it when I get so lost in the writing that I don’t know or care what time it is.  I love writing late into the night because I have to see what will happen.

I also love working with beginning writers.  This week I had lunch with a woman who had a degree in English, had written articles and started several books, each in a different genre.

I saw the lights come on when I told her the secret:  Pick a line!  If you want to publish pick the kind of book you love to read and write in that genre.

What advice would you give to your 12 year old self?

Believe in yourself.  All those days you’re daydreaming in classes from grade school to grad school remember you’re working on your future career.

Also, find that kid named Thomas and marry him.  It’ll be the best think you ever do and he’ll help you follow your dream of writing.

If you could time travel, where would you go first?

I already time travel all the time.  Where would I go?  Texas of course. ☺

What was the last book that was recommended to you?

Katherine Anderson’s NEW LEAF.  I always love curling up with one of her books.

What is your writing process like? Do you have any interesting writing rituals?

Most of my days are spent fighting my way to my computer hidden in a little place out back of my house.  We call it the bunkhouse.  The walls are covered with whiteboards and pictures of Ransom Canyon, Palo Duro Canyon, wild horses running across open country, sunsets, snakes and blue bonnets.  There are family trees and how I see the brands of each ranch in my story.  There is a board full of notes on what will come next and calendars from each book’s time period.  When I step into the Bunkhouse—-I step into RANSOM CANYON.

I’ve never felt alone out there.  My characters surround me.

Are you working on any other projects besides the Ransom Canyon series?

Not right now.  Ransom Canyon keeps me busy.  I’m promoting Book 1,(traveling to give talks and lectures) I’m copy-editing book 2, and writing book 3 every night I’m home.

On planes and long drives another series is simmering in the back of my brain but it will have to wait along with a dozen others.  I’ll write as many as I can, then maybe I’ll just sit back and daydream the others.

Being a writer is not what I do—-It’s who I am.

A fifth-generation Texan, New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Jodi Thomas chooses to set the majority of her novels in her home state, where her grandmother was born in a covered wagon. A former teacher, Thomas traces the beginning of her storytelling career to the days when her twin sisters were young and impressionable.
When not working on a novel or inspiring students to pursue a writing career, Thomas enjoys traveling with her husband, renovating a historic home they bought in Amarillo and “checking up” on their two grown sons.
