My Review

There are many alluring tales in this world. With richness and fantasy that opens the imagination to places you never would have traveled before. I can with honesty say that this is one of those books. This book begins with a headstrong, extremely brave, and fiercely loyal girl. At only the age of fifteen, Hualiama (or Lia) will stop at nothing to protect her adopted family, even if she knows it’s a battle she cannot win. Need I say more? What can possibly be better than literally diving headfirst into an action filled story with flying crafts called ‘Dragonships’, Dragonet’s such as the compassionate and clever Flicker, and a girl embracing her identity and gumption? Since, of course, I must say more, I will tell you some of the wonderful attributes this book has to offer.

Hualiama engages Ra’aba, a highly skilled fighter and traitor attempting to steal the throne from the rightful king, Lia’s adopted father. Despite knowing her steep disadvantage, she fights in front of her sister Fyria, attempting to escape and is thrown from a Dragonship after being heavily wounded and dealing her own blow to Ra’aba. Sees like quite an end for our female lead. That is until a young Dragonet sees a dumb human attempting to fly and believes it’s only right to save it.

With this, our beginning characters meet with a swoop, a crash, and a few more bangs and bruises after that. Hooked yet?

From the beginning, I would cringe every time Lia was injured in some way. This became a common occurrence as Lia experiences many engaging sequences of fights and injuries along the way. However, with every injury, she rises up again and pushes herself to be better. She truly does win your heart and the reader can continually cheer for her on her journey.

The perspective is very interesting in the changing points of view that switch to and fro without any real sense of a page break. Despite this, it is quite easy to distinguish between the two characters of Flicker and Hualiama as their humor, speech, and personality easily shine through and from the first sentence you know who it is. This becomes even more apparent once Grandion, a Tourmaline dragon, is introduced.

With such a strong female lead and other engaging characters making a name for themselves in this book; you really embrace the unique and refreshing perspective of the characters.

But what is that is so amazing about fantasy books such as these? It’s the exploration. The happiness and the grief we feel through them, all the more wonderful when it’s a book that is so well written. This book has such amazing imagery that can almost make a reader dizzy with its depictions. Marc Secchia not only creates the imagery of the high cliffs, roaring waterfalls, and misty caves; but also tells you the sounds, the touch, and the aromas to an addicting degree.

It’s my ambition now to read Marc Secchia’s other previous novels in the Dragon Rider era and delve into his wonderful world of dragons.

Tracy Tam doesn’t really believe in Santa Claus, at least not like the rest of us do. She also doesn’t believe that Santa can possibly deliver all of those presents in one night, to children around the world, without a little help from science. A flying sleigh can only be powered by jet engines, after all, and Santa’s magical abilities can only be the result of altered DNA. How else could he know what every little girl and boy wants for Christmas and who has been naughty or nice? In order to test her theories, Tracy sneaks onto Santa’s sleigh then ends up at Santa Command, where a team of (gasp!) humans monitor Santa’s big night. When Tracy attempts to hack into their computers, she accidentally introduces a virus into the system. As a result, three states get knocked out of sync with the rest of the world (oops!). Santa won’t be able to deliver all the presents in time! Now, Tracy must fix time and help Santa, but she has no idea how. How can a girl who doesn’t believe help Santa and save Christmas before it’s too late? With a little Christmas magic, of course!

Excerpt

After saying goodbye to her mother, Alina and I get in our cars and drive back to my apartment.

I stop at the taco place on the way and bring back a dozen tacos. When we get inside, Alina takes one look at them and says, “Good Lord, Mr. Hungry. How many are you planning on eating?”

“However many you don’t eat,” I answer with a grin.

She rolls her eyes. “Typical.” She places two on her plate. “Don’t think this means you get to have the other ten. I might have one more.”

“I’ll save it for you.” We take our food to the living room and sit on the couch. I turn on the TV.

“Anything you want to watch? I have basic cable, but I’m sure we could find something.”

She shrugs. “Doesn’t really matter to me.”

I scroll until I find a Nash Bridges rerun. I raise an eyebrow at her and she nods, so I leave it and start eating. At the first commercial break, I hit the mute button and turn to her. “So…if we’re going to be friends, we need to know a little more about each other.”

“Like what?”

“Well, I know your name is Alina Lyons. And you used to work at a diner. And you were friends with Victoria since senior year in high school. But I don’t really know anything else.”

“So, are we going to play twenty questions?” she asks, a smirk playing across her lips.

I make a funny face at her and smile. “No. Let’s just go over some of the basics.”

She wipes her mouth with a napkin and sets down her plate on the coffee table. “Okay, I’ll bite. What kind of basics?”

“Okay, so Nash Bridges—better or worse than Miami Vice?”

She giggles. “Well, they both have Don Johnson, so that alone makes them tied. I am partial to Nash Bridges, though. I used to watch it with my dad and brother growing up.”

Interesting. A girl near my age who actually knows about sitcoms from the eighties and nineties.

I can’t remember the last time I was able to talk to someone outside my family who’s familiar with shows that didn’t premiere in their teenage years. Most of my peers were more interested in the latest X-Men movie or who was voted off last night on American Idol. Not that I didn’t care about “teenager” things, I just had a broader spectrum of taste. “Well played…but,” I say, pausing to hold up a finger, “you forgot to mention Yasmine Bleeth.”

“I didn’t forget. I’m surprised that part matters to you when she doesn’t run in slow motion in a red bathing suit on Nash Bridges.”

Not to mention a girl who’s cheeky to boot by referencing Baywatch. “She doesn’t have to. That’s the beauty of it.” I wink and she laughs, shaking her head and covering her face. “You know what, Alina?”

“What?” she asks, peeking through her fingers.

“I think I’m going to like being friends with you.”

Aurelious Forty Book Blitz and Giveaway

Aurelious Forty; Volume One
by Dianna Beirne
Release Date: 12/20/14
252 pages

Summary from Goodreads:Aurelious Forty has led a lonely, troubled life. He stays disconnected from the world around him with no family and no friends. He lives merely to exist…to survive.
Aurelious’ life changes in an instant when an impulsive decision forces him to abandon everything he has ever known. Choosing to follow strangers into a new world, he discovers he was born with a gift so strong, so unique; it could give him the power to change humanity. But the shadows of his childhood are long and dark and run through every fiber of his soul. Can Aurelious break the chains of his past and use his gift for good? Or will the nightmare of his tormentors set him on a path of revenge so fierce it could destroy us all? Recommended for ages 16 and up.

A Deeper Look at a Main Character: Aurelious Forty:

Aurelious is, at times, a bit of an enigma. He is a very emotional character and while he shares his emotional experiences with the reader, he tries desperately to hide them from the characters that he interacts with on the page. He is typically unsuccessful in masking his own emotions from those around him though he’s generally unaware of how unsuccessful he is because he’s fairly self-absorbed, at least in the beginning of the book. Enigma.

There is a lot to love in Aurelious but he makes you work at loving him, he doesn’t give it right away. There are times when you might think it’s easier to dislike him but then he draws you in and you’re reminded of what he endured as a child and you’re proud of how far he’s come.

Although he is the main character and the one telling us his story, he isn’t the hero. He is really more of a sidekick who has to learn from the hero and finds himself fumbling along the way, a lot. He fumbles so much that he makes the hero a little less heroic for a minute. But, when he starts to look outside of himself, when he starts to connect with and care for the people around him, when he shows us how much he changes and overcomes, then he does become a little bit more of a hero himself. Or at least makes us question how a hero could be defined.

Aurelious Forty struggles. He learns. He grows. He changes. He is an imperfect character, just like the rest of us. And, in his imperfection, he is worthy of being loved, just like the rest of us. As the person who created him, I must confess, I hope people will embrace his flaws and love him.

About the Author

Dianna Beirne lives in a fantasy world. Okay not really, but part of her wishes she did and, since that’s technically impossible, she writes about fantasy worlds instead. Her first Young Adult novel entitled Aurelious Forty; Volume One quickly turned into her first Young Adult series with the addition of Aurelious Forty; Volume Two and, Aurelious Forty; Volume Three.

When not writing, she’s generally daydreaming which morphs into wondering if that last daydream could turn into a book. She has also recently discovered podcasts but doesn’t exactly understand what they are or why they’re different from regular radio shows. So it’s safe to assume that her next book won’t be about a podcast. Instead she’ll just keep listening to the ones that she finds that hilarious because laughing is one of her favorite pastimes and she finds way too many things funny!

Prior to dedicating her time to writing, Dianna taught undergraduate and graduate courses about using literacy in the elementary, middle, and high school classroom. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, a Master’s degree in Literacy and a Doctorate in Education specializing in Curriculum and Teaching. Dianna lives in New York and is the grateful mother of a son whom she misses terribly when he is away at college.

A Book of Spirits and Thieves Teaser

22571365

A Book of Spirits and Thieves (Spirits and Thieves #1)

by Morgan Rhodes

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

Modern-day sisters discover deadly ancient magic in book 1 of this Falling Kingdoms spin-off series!

Worlds collide in this suspenseful, page-turning Falling Kingdoms spin-off series, which explores a whole new side of Mytica—and an even darker version of its magic.

Crystal Hatcher, Modern-day Toronto: It’s a normal afternoon in her mother’s antique bookshop when Crys witnesses the unthinkable: her little sister Becca collapses into a coma after becoming mesmerized by a mysterious book written in an unrecognizable language.

Maddox Corso, Ancient Mytica: Maddox Corso doesn’t think much of it when he spots an unfamiliar girl in his small village. Until, that is, he realizes that she is a spirit, and he is the only one who can see or hear her. Her name is Becca Hatcher, and she needs Maddox to help get her home.

Farrell Grayson, Modern-day Toronto: Rich and aimless Farrell Grayson is thrilled when the mysterious leader of the ultra-secret Hawkspear Society invites him into the fold. But when he learns exactly what he has to do to prove himself, Farrell starts to question everything he thought he knew about family, loyalty, and himself….

Fate has brought these young people together, but ancient magic threatens to rip them apart.

Quote 1:

“Look at me, will you?” the girl cried.  “Please!”

Her fearful tone pulled at him, and he finally met her gaze.

A whisper of relief moved through her eyes.  “My name is Becca Hatcher.  I don’t know what’s happened to me, where I am, or how I got here, but I know one thing.  You’re going to help me get back home.”

Morgan Rhodes, A Book of Spirits and Thieves

Quote 2:

“Tears aren’t just for babies. They’re proof that you feel something and aren’t afraid to show it. It’s those that won’t ever allow themselves to cry that are the weak ones.”

Morgan Rhodes, A Book of Spirits and Thieves

Quote 3:

“You’re not alone.  You have me, and I’m not going anywhere,” she said firmly.  Angrily.  “When the going gets tough, I believe in one thing, Maddox.  My gut.  It tells me which book to read next, even if it has lousy reviews; which movie to see, even if no one else wants to see it; which friends to hang out with, whether they’re popular or loners or smart or dumb as bricks.  And my gut tells me that you’re not going to die.  You’re important to this world.  And you’re important to me.  Got it?  You and me, we’re friends now.  And friends help each other out in bad, snake-monster, scary-goddess times.”

Author Interview:

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

The book is new adult, so definitely mature readers. They should read my book because it’s a feel good story with lots of romance and a side of humor. While it is heavy on the romance, friendship is at the center of it all.

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

I honestly can’t remember why I originally chose Unexpected. Knowing me, I played the word association game until I knew it was right. It just fits the story so well–Alina is continuously facing different sudden changes in life and it’s all very “unexpected” when it comes to how she thought her life would be.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

Oh, now that’s a fun story! I originally had a different stock photo picked out for the cover, but right after I downloaded it and sent it to my cover artist, Marie Landry, I came across a cover featuring the same picture. At first I was mad because I had wasted a download on a photo I couldn’t use without looking like a copycat. But then I shrugged my shoulders and started my search all over again. I found the picture for the cover you see today and instantly knew it was perfect. The guy in the photo was basically Ryan–guitar and forehead kiss and all! So, it ended up being the best thing for my original choice to already be taken.

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

Ryan. There’s something about him, aside from being handsome and having tattoos, that just draws you to him. He’s sweet, generous, positive, and protective. He carries himself with the attitude of living your life right–to the fullest, not letting anyone bring you down, focusing on the good things. Something I aspire to every day.

How about your least favorite character? What makes them less appealing to you?

There are a couple “least favorite” characters, but I don’t want to give them away because it’s a spoiler. When you read the book, you’ll know exactly which two I’m talking about and you’ll understand why immediately.

If you could change ONE thing about your novel, what would it be? Why?

Hmm… I never thought about changing anything! I usually love my stories as is and have no intention of changing any part because it feels like it belongs.

Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:

Unexpected was originally going to be told in only Alina’s point of view. It wasn’t until months after I set the book aside that I decided to write in Ryan’s point of view, too. I don’t think the story would have been the same if I hadn’t told it in dual POV.

How can we contact you or find out more about your books?

Facebook | Twitter | Blog | Goodreads | Instagram | Amazon

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’ve got a few projects in the works, but I’m focusing my attention on two of them. One is a sexy erotic romance featuring a dirty talking hero. The other is a sweet small town second chance contemporary romance. It’s fun to challenge myself with different stories.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

Write a review! Reviews help other readers decide whether or not to give a book a chance. The more reviews with a variety of opinions, the better.

Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get published?

My biggest tip for writers is to not let your fears get the best of you. I’ve spent years watching fellow writers constantly talking about how they want to get published. They’re always writing, which is great, but something is holding them back from taking the steps toward publishing. I’m not sure the exact reasons, but sometimes it looks like they’re afraid of failure. Don’t be afraid of failure. Not every author becomes an overnight success. Sometimes you have to invest a lot of time, money, and energy into getting your name out there. Don’t be afraid of working hard to achieve your goal! Trust me when I say the results are worth it in the end.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Thanks so much for having me on the blog!!

And now, before you go, how about a snippet from your book that is meant to intrigue and tantalize us:

Book Excerpt:

Saturday is a short day at work because it starts raining in the afternoon. It throws a damper on the remainder of the work that needs to be done, so the supervisor tells us to head out and we can pick back up next week. It makes me happy because it has been a long week, not just work-wise, but also with everything else happening. I’m grateful for a chance to get caught up on other things.

When I get back to the apartment, Alina is curled up on the couch reading a book again. She’s wearing those reading glasses, and looking sexy as fuck. She’s gorgeous already, but there’s something about those glasses that makes her extremely sexy. I haven’t quite pinned down what it is yet, but I seriously have to figure it out soon before I go crazy.

She peeks up at me and grins. “You’re home early!”

Her enthusiasm is unparalleled and pleases me more than I can admit. “It’s raining. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was drizzling, but it’s actually coming down pretty good.” I sit down on the couch next to her, and reach for her book. “So, what are you reading?”

She pulls the book away before I can grab it. “It’s a romance.”

“Ah. What kind of romance?” I reach again and this time get a hold of it. She gasps and tries to get it back, but I stand up and look at it. “There appears to be a half-naked couple on the cover.”

“Give it back!”

“I want to look at it.” She groans in frustration and presses a hand to her forehead. I continue to look it over. “I think this is more than just a kissing book.”

I hand it back to her and she snatches it from me, tucking it away. “And?” she asks with an eyebrow raised.

“And nothing. I was just curious, that’s all.” I tilt my head. “Are you going to keep reading?”

“Not if you’re going to hover.”

“Then you’d better take off those glasses.”

She scrunches her nose. “Why?”

I kneel down next to her by the couch. Leaning into her, I say, “Because they are impossibly sexy and I’m half tempted to kiss you if they’re still on ten seconds from now.”

Her eyes widen like saucers. “What?”

“I’m serious,” I murmur, inching closer. “I will kiss you in a few seconds if you don’t take them off.”

Her mouth parts, but she makes no move to reach for them. I watch as her chest rises and falls, the nervous anticipation building in her. I’m mere inches away, so close to stealing a kiss. Just as I’m about to make good on my promise, she pulls them off swiftly.

I let out a breath, holding back my disappointment. “Well, that was close.”

Chapter 1

Zo couldn’t remember a time when she didn’t fear the Ram.
Even after the raid, when so much of her fear had turned
to hate, the fear still existed beneath. It was a foundation that
she came to rely upon. A constant.

Sleeping under a fir tree so close to Ram’s Gate went
against her very nature. While her body revolted, she couldn’t
think of a more appropriate place to be. Zo choked down the
beastly fear clawing its way up her throat and smiled like this
was just another assignment. “It’s time, Gabe.”

Her guard, Gabe, rested on soggy pine needles beside her.
His hands were tucked behind his shaggy blond head, eyes
closed in feigned sleep. He used to lay like that, with his arms
arrogantly thrown back and his chest puffed out like he owned
the world, when they were kids. The river would rush by
carrying rumors of starving clans and battles lost—heartache
that pulled tight strings of tension throughout Zo’s body—
while Gabe just laid back and chewed on a grass root.

Today, Gabe’s pretend-sleep didn’t fool Zo any more than
it ever had. They both knew he hadn’t slept soundly since
they’d left the Allied Camp a week ago. With eyes still closed,
Gabe frowned as Zo left the protection of his side to bundle her
bedroll. She crawled out from under the skirt of the enormous
fir tree. Its sweeping limbs that kissed the uneven ground had
kept them as safe as one could be in this godforsaken region.
Behind her, Gabe growled impatiently as he gathered his
things to follow.

“There’s no need to rush this.” He pushed the branch aside
and threw out his pack with more force than necessary. Zo
flinched, not used to seeing her childhood friend angry.

“You didn’t wake me for my watch again,” said Zo,
unsurprised. Ever since they’d left the Allies, Gabe had been
insanely overprotective.

“You need your sleep.”

“And you don’t?”

Gabe sighed and scooped a blob of mud from the newly
thawed earth. He frowned and smeared it along the curved
planes of Zo’s face and neck. The cool mud felt surprisingly
comforting, but it could have just been Gabe’s touch. His
capable hands shook while lines of worry deepened across his
brow.

“This won’t work.” He stopped and cupped his muddy
hand at the base of her neck, his blue eyes pleading. “You’re
too pretty. A little mud can’t change that.”

Zo yanked on the sleeve of her shirt until the seam split then
ripped and frayed the cuff of her pant legs. Young, unarmed
women just didn’t go on casual strolls through the perilous
hills of the Ram. Commander Laden said she needed to look
desperate if she wanted them to believe her story. Her lie.

As if looking desperate is hard, Zo thought.

Gabe stood a full head taller than Zo. Despite his large
frame, he could outrun a jackrabbit and his mind was just as
quick. A valuable weapon for the Allies. But with all of his
abilities, he was not the one walking into the lion’s den this
morning.

He untwisted the strap of Zo’s medical satchel and let out a
long breath before dropping his hands to his sides.

“I’ll miss you,” said Zo. Her voice carried the mechanical
cadence she’d adopted several years ago. A small part of her—
the part that wasn’t dead—hated disappointing Gabe. He’d
done so much for her and her little sister, Tess, since they’d
journeyed from the Valley of Wolves to live with Commander
Laden and the Allies.

Thinking of her wild, eight-year-old sister brought a
temporary smile to Zo’s muddied face. She couldn’t think of
Tess and not imagine her tromping through the forest trying
to catch squirrels and sneak up on rabbits. It was her second
favorite thing to do, next to following Zo around the Allied
Camp. The little tick wouldn’t take her absence well. Zo had
left a note and arranged for her care, but that didn’t mean the
kid wouldn’t be furious.

Gabe pressed his cold hands to Zo’s face and forced her to
look at him. “Come back with me, Zo. Let Commander Laden
send someone else. Someone with less to lose.”
“We’re not doing this again.” Zo pulled away. She had
begged for this mission, and she would see it through. No
matter what the cost. The Allies desperately needed information
that only she could provide, if they hoped to defeat the most
powerful military force in the region.

Gabe’s hands curled into fists. His voice rose to carry over
the wind that whipped his unruly hair. “Entering Ram’s Gate
is suicide! We don’t even know if you can get the information
Laden’s after.”

The truth was far worse than Gabe could possibly know.
He hadn’t heard what life would be like inside the Gate. They
would eventually discover her, and once they did, they’d kill
her. Plain and simple.

There were worse things a person could endure.

She’d do anything for the Cause.

“Goodbye, Gabe.” She kissed his frozen, whiskered cheek.

His hand clamped down on Zo’s wrist and he yanked her
into a fierce embrace. “I’ll be close, waiting to help you escape
the minute you send word.” He smoothed down her wild, dark
hair. “I’ll find a way to keep you safe, Zo. I swear it.”
Zo forced a hollow smile, for Gabe’s sake. “Look after
Tess. Tell her I’m doing this for her. Tell her I’m doing it for
our parents.”

She left Gabe standing frozen in the low light of morning.
After a hard climb, Zo reached the towering wall of Ram’s
Gate. The wall was comprised of redwood logs at least four
feet in diameter and fifty feet tall, bound together with heavy
rope and shaved to a point at the top. Black tar and broken
glass glimmered along the high rim of the wall to discourage
clans foolish enough to attack, and souls brave enough to dare
escape.

Zo looked right and left and saw no end to the wall through
the thick maze of aspen and evergreens. From her training with
Commander Laden, she knew the giant wall ran for miles in
each direction until it reached the cliffs that dropped off to the
freezing ocean below. Inside the wall were hundreds of acres
of farmlands, mountainous forests, and enough homes to house
thousands of Ram and the slaves they called “Nameless.”
Calmer than a sane person should be, Zo dropped to her
knees in the shadow of the ominous wall. Knowing these
might be the last free moments of her life, she allowed herself
to think about things that were normally buried deep within
her. The memory of her mother’s soft skin. The safety of her
father’s smile. Tess’ dimples and her eagerness to please,
despite her stubborn ways.

The moment was as sweet as it was brief. But it was hers.
Deep-voiced drums boomed and the enormous gate rose
inch by inch. Men shouted orders and whips cracked. Through
the gap of the slow-rising gate she saw at least forty men in
tattered animal hides with harnesses on their backs. They
slipped through mud while struggling to turn a giant wheel
connected to a thick chain to raise the gate.

The Nameless. The Ram had kept slaves for hundreds of
years, some were captured, others came willingly, while most
were born into the lowly title.

Instinct told her to run, but fear and determination kept her
frozen in place. She locked the people she loved back into the
cage that was her heart and prepared to face her enemy.
Zo pressed her nose into the icy mud in a show of
submission. The drums ceased and the silence echoed in her
chest like a painful heartbeat.

The metal of short swords clinked against armor as men
approached. She peeked up to sight of a bald leader walking
ahead of a wall of six soldiers. His cold eyes seemed too big
for his head, protuberant like those of a frog.

“Get up,” the leader commanded.

Zo climbed to her feet but kept her gaze focused on the
man’s fur-lined boots.

“State your name and clan,” he ordered.

“I am from the family Shaw of the Kodiak Clan,” Zo said,
hoping her accent would pass. The Ram had raided one of the
Kodiak settlements a few weeks earlier. Many of the women
and children whose husbands had died in the raid would
come to the Gate, choosing to offer themselves as slaves over
watching their children starve to death.

The leader circled her. “Age?”

“Seventeen.”

A few of the guards in the line exchanged words. One
laughed under his breath.

“You’re too thin to claim the Kodiak as your clan. Your
jaw is more square than round.”

The sound of a young girl’s scream saved Zo from having
to answer.

“Let me go! You’re hurting me!” the girl cried.

Zo froze. It couldn’t be …

A guard dressed in full armor carried the kicking child up
the muddy hill and dropped her at the bald leader’s feet.
Zo’s whole body went rigid as her eight-year-old sister,
Tess, scrambled up to hug her. “I’m so sorry,” Tess cried. She
must have secretly followed them from the Allies, though how
she survived the dangerous journey unnoticed was beyond Zo.

“Tess, I thought I’d lost you,” Zo stammered. She hoped
her shock registered as relief instead of panic. “Don’t say a
word,” Zo whispered in her ear as they embraced.

“Who is this child?” the frog-eyed leader asked.

“She is my sister, sir. We were separated. She found me.”

“Clearly.” He circled the girls once more then reached out
and grabbed Zo by the throat, forcing her to the ground on her
back. His lips brushed her cheek as he spoke. “How do I know
you’re not a stinking Wolf? That you’re not feeding me some
story?” His breath reeked of stale cabbage and rotten sausage.
Zo’s heels dug small trenches in the mud as she struggled
against the hand tightening around her throat. Black dots
invaded her vision.

The leader smiled and licked his lips as if she were his next
meal. “We don’t allow Wolves through the Gate.” A string of
spittle escaped his lips and landed on her cheek. “Ever.” He
released his grip and Zo gasped for air.

Tess rushed to Zo’s side, her eyes wet with tears.

“With all of the clans mixing, it’s getting harder and harder
to sort the wheat from the tares. I can’t take any chances …

” He shrugged and nodded to his guard. The men moved in,
pulling the sisters apart. Tess let out a shrill cry. A guard struck
her tiny cheek.

“Please!” Zo fought against firm hands digging into her
arms. “I come from three generations of healers. My sister is
learning too. We beg the mercy of the Ram, and pledge our
lives to your service!”

The Gate Master held up a hand, and his men threw Zo to
the ground. His round, glassy eyes stayed fixed on her as he
grunted a soft command to one of his men. The soldier nodded,
bowed, and ran back through the Gate.

“A healer, you say?” The corner of his lip pulled up to
reveal rotting teeth as he smiled. “We’ll see about that.”

What Lies Within
by James Morris
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Publication Date: June 2, 2015
4.5/5 Rating

Book Summary (Goodreads):

“You’re going to die”

A single text message and Shelley Marano’s world is upended. A normal high school senior, Shelley discovers she is adopted. She goes on a journey to uncover her past, only to find she was part of a horrific experiment to test the theory of nature versus nurture. In a culture of violence committed by young people, she may be one of these killers. With the lives of her and her friends in the balance, one thing is certain: she will never be the same.

My Review:

Rarely do I find books that have just the right amount of description, the right amount of dialogue, the right amount of suspense, and the right amount of a love story, but What Lies Within is a perfect balance of all these things. I’m very picky with thriller stories. When I was in high school I went through a phase where those types of movies were all I watched. In fact, I used to read these Lois Duncan books that were like paranormal thrillers. But after high school, those thriller stories all became the same. And over time those stories turned into “gore” stories. It’s been awhile since I’ve found a classic thriller story that is both surprising and unexpecting and a tale worth while. What Lies Within would be a perfect candidate for a book turned into a movie, it was just that good! Not just good, but bone-chilling awesome! It’s a book that won’t disappoint!

What Lies Within is a captivating, intense ride, about a girl named Shelley that relatively has a normal life until she gets a text message telling her that her life is in danger. Before she knows it she’s thrown into impossible situations and gripping truths. She finds out she’s adopted and sets out on a hunt to discover who she is, and more importantly, to find out why the man on the motorcycle is killing people from a list, a list she happens to be on. What Lies Within is suspenseful and intense, and a real page turner.

There are so many things to love about this book! For one, it was like watching a thriller movie, and it’s very obvious that this talented author, James Morris, has written for television. The story itself was very well written, and the character development was substantial. I loved Shelley’s character ARC. It was great to see her fly down that dark path, and you feel for her every step of the way. Her story is so terrifying and it keeps you on the edge of your seat! I also really enjoyed her friend, Winston and loved their interactions with each other. I simply love his personality and how devoted and loyal he is to her, clear to the end of the book. He is a true friend, through and through. I was a little bummed that you could clearly see how much Winston adored her and how much Shelley just disregarded it. And the boy she did like? Remy? He was total bad news. But everything that happens to Shelley in the book is all important because it all helps create the person she ends up by the end of the book. Not only does James Morris give us a fast-paced thriller ride, but also an emotional roller coaster as well. There is so much that happens to Shelley, and it’s hard to put the book down because you hope she makes it out of that situation, and you’re afraid what’s going to happen to her next. And the dynamic between her and the other characters, especially Winston and her Dad is so well done. I love her Dad, and I love how hard he tries to help her and be there for her even though he doesn’t understand what’s happening to his daughter at all. I don’t want to spoil too much since it does have such a surprising, climatic ending, but if you like thriller stories that keep you on the edge of your seat and something unexpecting around each corner, then this book is definitely for you! I honestly didn’t see the ending coming, which I loved even more. There were things that happened to her that made me think that maybe she was crazy and her mind was making all of this up. I was definitely waiting for the ending where you find out that nothing was real. It’s just that crazy of a story, but a good kind of crazy! The kind of crazy that keeps you on your toes and on the edge of your seat!

There are some unanswered questions in the story, and I’m secretly hoping for a sequel. And I honestly can’t think of a single thing I really disliked about the book. It’s a great story, amazingly well written, characters are awesome… There’s just so much to love and enjoy about the book!

And I’m sure you’re wondering what happens to Shelley at the end of her story? Does the truth set Shelley free? Does it cage her? Does it change her entirely? And the experiment she discovers, is it nature or nurture that turns a person violent? Well, you’ll have to read it to find out!

Excerpt

I caught sight of his cut, thought a moment, and swam away. He floated there, treading water and wondering what would happen next. At that point, his face conveyed the pain in his side. I watched an intense sting replace what I knew of the original burning sensation of a coral abrasion, and the open wound spilled into the ocean at a steady pace.

Conceivably, I had underestimated the severity of the cut. Maybe the coral cut deeper than I thought. The blood clouded the water surrounding him, and now the problem remained of how to take the injured man across the reef without doing further damage. We still needed to cross at least two miles and climb a rocky beach. Or did we?

Before he had time to contemplate any other option, I approached him from below. I swam up to him slowly, and he did nothing. He didn’t dive to meet me or attempt to swim away. He hung vertically in the water, waiting.

He must have felt me before he could clearly see me. The water shifted as I neared, my physicality changing the flow of the ocean around me. He knew I was there, but he didn’t dive below. Was he afraid? Too hurt to move? Instead, he stayed still, moving as little as possible, allowing my approach, and keeping the blood loss at a minimum.

I moved below him and then up, along his body, until my head emerged from the inky blue water and he stared into my eyes. He let out a fast gasp and quickly sank below the surface.

Author Interview:

How did you begin writing? What inspires you to write?

I’ve been writing stories here and there ever since grade school. I followed my passion, went to college and studied English Literature and film, and then moved to Los Angeles to break into the entertainment industry. Hollywood is its own story – I ended up writing for a few shows with my writing partner – but after we broke up, I turned to novels. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, that’s for sure. Some scary dips, indeed!

Who is your intended audience and why should they read the book?

You know, I’m not a fan of labels, of calling something Young Adult or New Adult or something else because it seems exclusionary. I’m a grown man, and I read young adult! But having said that, the audience is really geared towards readers of the thriller genre and less about contemporary YA. This is certainly not your John Greene-type YA novel (and I love some John Greene). It’s more of a thrill-ride geared toward older teens and adults-who-are-forever-young (like me). For readers who want a bit of escapism with a fast pace that hopefully raises some interesting questions, then WHAT LIES WITHIN is for them!

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

I liked the dual meanings of the word “lies.” It could mean something that’s inside of something, or it’s the lies that we believe about ourselves, so WHAT LIES WITHIN seemed a natural fit. I can tell you if I ended up writing a sequel, it would be titled WHAT LIES BEYOND.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art.

My friend Lani Rich of StoryWonk designed it, and I liked it because it’s a stark image that captures the tone of the book. I loved the red hair that represents Shelley, as well as the tears of blood.

Who is your favorite character?

That’s a tough one! I like them all! Maybe it’s a cop-out, but I have to get inside and understand all of them – even the villains – to bring them to life. Winston was probably the easiest to write, though, simply because he’s the most like me.

If I could change ONE thing about your novel, what would it be? Why?

You know, I do have thoughts on this. There might be a couple things I would change, but I’ll keep them secret. I learn on every project I do, and yet, no project is ever perfect (much to my frustration!) I try my best, giving the story and characters a lot of time – I’ve been over that draft hundreds of times – and at the end of the day, I’ve made it as good as I could during the time I worked on it. It’s a bit like thinking about previous relationships: the coulda-woulda-shoulda, and yet, you can’t go back and change things; you can only learn from them.

Give us an interesting fun fact.

WHAT LIES WITHIN is actually the 3rd book I wrote, but the first that landed me an agent, and the first to get published. Two others, and the years they took to write, but the act of writing them taught me a tremendous amount.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m currently working on a couple projects, and mulling over a sequel to WHAT LIES WITHIN. But sequels are tricky – you want to make sure the sequel is worthy – and better – than the original, and not just done because you can.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?

First, any reader who even appreciates a bit of it is a superstar. I’m not one of those writers who is like, “I am an artiste – you will like what I give you!” Not at all. I write for an audience. I write knowing someone is going to sit down and choose this book over another book, reading instead of watching TV or calling friends or doing a million other things. You have to respect that level of commitment. A reader is sitting down with me, basically. And I don’t want to disappoint. If a reader likes it, of course, share the experience and tell your friends!

Do I have any tips for other writers trying to get published?

First, writers write because they love it; they write because they have to. There are so many other ways to try and make money, that if that’s the goal, I say cut your losses. But if you’re an addict, and hopelessly addicted to stories, then the advice is simple: keep going. Second, have elephant skin with the soul of a poet, and expect rejection. Learn from it. Learn from criticism. Be open to it. Tell stories that are important to you. Don’t try to catch a trend. Worry less about getting an agent and getting published and doing the much, much harder thing, which is getting down a solid draft.

Anything else I’d like to say?

Just thank you. Really. For helping spread your experience of the book. For helping me get my name out there. Writing can be very lonely, but it’s worth it when you actually make an impact. I try not to get too emotionally invested in reviews – reading is so highly subjective – but it’s still great to hear that people enjoyed the read. It makes all the hours very well worth it.

Exclusive Book Excerpt:

The motorcyclist didn’t move, just stared back, and then he looked down at a photo in his hand and slipped it into his back pocket.

Ordinarily, the kid might’ve made some remark, but the motorcyclist looked like a well-armored samurai. Something in the kid’s brain told him to screw the gas–just peel out and don’t look back. Only when the motorcyclist turned away and put in a credit card to unhook the nozzle did the kid relax.

Seconds passed and he sensed something was wrong. He couldn’t discern why until he realized he hand’t heard the normal sounds of a motorcycle gas cap being unscrewed or the clank of the nozzle against metal. In fact, there was no sound at all. He turned–

The motorcyclist held the gas nozzle in his hand.

In the span of a second, as time expanded, the kid’s eyes glanced downward. The motorcyclist’s hand tensed against the handle,  unleashing a torrent of gasoline. It sprayed with the force of a fire hose, nearly waterboarding the kid in the mouth. Its unmistakable aroma consumed him, and he fought the urge to gag. His mouth stung, hands held up, blind, eyes burning, the sting, the smell, the fear–

Then it stopped.

The gas dripped from his face, little beads of toxic perspiration, his hair wet, his clothes soaked, face contorted in a rictus of poison. He opened his eyes, the world blurry, grainy, and he caught the glint of something shining in the motorcyclist’s hand followed by a sound: flick, cap, flick, cap.

The kid squinted to try and focus.

Flick, cap. Flick, cap.

He saw then what it was.
