White Raven by J.L. Weil
(Raven Series, #1)
Publication date: March 27th 2015
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis:

DREADFUL LIES.
UNEXPECTED LOVE.
IMPOSSIBLE TRUTH.

It only took one heartbeat to change my life—one chilling phone call in the middle of the night.

And then, as if my life didn’t already suck, my dad sends my brother and me to some idyllic island for the summer to live with a grandma we never met. WTH. Naturally, I rebel. In the end, I find myself shipped off to Raven Hallow…and bored to tears.

Until I get an eyeful of the mind-bendingly gorgeous Zane Hunter. The dark-hair cutie makes my pulse go bonkers, and I think, maybe this might not be so bad after all. Six feet of swoon inducing looks, with a hint of Celtic charm in his voice, he was the type of guy that left a string of broken hearts in his wake. And I had all the heartbreak I could handle.

Yet, there is something uncanny, almost supernatural about Zane, and it’s not just his devastating smirk. No matter how much distance I put between us, Raven Hallow isn’t big enough, and the sparking tension between is undeniable. Of course, the one person I want to avoid becomes my salvation.

My past comes back to terrorize me. Someone wants me dead, and the closer I get to the truth, the more I realize my whole life is a lie. I am no longer sure what is more frightening—the attempts on my life or the guy whose heart and soul are synchronized with mine.

Excerpt from White Raven:

TJ and Rose kept the conversation rolling as I gave the appropriate one-word responses or a head nod. I didn’t have much of an appetite, mostly picking at my chicken Caesar salad and gazing out at the ocean, until…
His hair was black as a wintry night, eyes icy blue as a gypsy’s heart. He had a lazy saunter about him and a glint of humor twinkling in those heart-melting eyes. There was nothing loose about his body, muscles bunching as he tethered a boat to the dock. I twiddled the straw, staring brazenly.
Good God. I wanted to have his babies. Not now, but most definitely someday.
And just like that, my summer got a billion times hotter…and interesting—way more interesting. I bit my lip, mulling over how I was going to accidently fall into his pants. Um—I mean path or even his lap would do, anything to get that one’s attention.
Drool hit the table in a mad case of fangirl, and I didn’t even know his name.
As if he sensed he was being slobbered over, his eyes scraped over me, and I held my breath. Holy hot tamales. An electric bolt of…lust maybe, I really didn’t know what it was, but it coiled through my body, making me shudder. A flicker of an unidentified emotion crossed his face, right before a secret smile appeared on his lips. Oh man, don’t get me started on his lips.
Elbows propped on the table, I rested my head on the edge of my palms, continually gazing and getting lost in the depths of his eyes. He hypnotized me. I followed his movements, my eyes glued to him. Then one of my elbows slipped off the table in classic Piper form, and down I went. I caught myself just before my chin whacked a corner of the patio table.
Only me.
Mortified, I closed my eyes.
TJ laughed. “Smooth, Pipe. I think you made a lasting impression”

A Necklace of Souls
by R.L. Stedman
Release Date: 12/19/14
339 pages

Summary from Goodreads:

‘A true dream is when the events I see in my sleep have, or will happen. It’s a talent that runs in my family. I was thirteen when I had my first true dream.’

Will’s Aunt says the Kingdom of the Rose is the most fortunate of lands. But Will hates the place – his uncle and aunt are horrible, and he misses his parents. Oh, how he misses them.

Dana wishes she wasn’t a princess. She’s always being told how to behave, what to wear. There’s a strangeness in the castle – why will no one talk about the Guardian, or the necklace that protects the land? And why does her father look at her with such sorrow? The collier’s cart seems the perfect escape. Only she didn’t realize she’d become so dirty, or so lost. Fortunately this boy, Will, has a sense of direction. And next to the forbidding stranger, N’tombe, he seems reassuringly normal.

Welcome to A Necklace of Souls: a story of love and loss, of shattered lives and desperate hopes. In the Kingdom of the Rose, bravery is not always measured by strength and magic is real, if only one has the courage to dream.

Shortlisted for the Sir Julius Vogel Award, A Necklace of Souls was awarded the Tessa Duder Award for Young Adult Fiction, Best First Book at the New Zealand Post Children and Young Adult Book Awards and is a Storylines Notable Book.

When a royal princess shows up looking for Nik, and an international gang arrives looking for missing jewels, Cara lands in mortal danger. Will she be able to save herself? What will happen to her newly repaired psyche if she loses Nik?

Author Interview

-What inspired Finding Thor?

One of my go-to movies when I’m looking for suspense and intrigue is National Treasure. Yet, I really love a good romance, too. One day I decided to see what would happen if I did a mash-up of National Treasure and Wuthering Heights.

-Wuthering Heights is rather tragic. What compelled you to add the sorrow to the story?

As a reader I really enjoy seeing a character overcome tragedy. In Finding Thor, the tragic incident happens six months before the story even begins, but Cara is still wallowing in it. There isn’t a lot in her life that spurs her to deal with it and move on. She doesn’t even realize how much meeting Nik Rock changes her until after many of the changes take place. I think a lot of the lessons we learn and the growth that we experience in real life is like that. It’s so much easier to see your path after you tamped down a trail through the tall grass.

-Why did you choose to set the story in your hometown of Bend, OR?

Once a month, I meet with a group of local authors to talk shop. One day several of them were discussing their books that were either set in or inspired by Central Oregon and I was a little sad that I couldn’t join the conversation. Since I was just starting this new project—my first romantic suspense—I thought it was the perfect time to choose a setting near and dear to my heart.

-How was knowing your setting different than making one up?

Knowing the scents and sounds, the temperature fluctuations, even the traffic patterns so intimately really helped me deepen the sense of place in the storyline. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fiction writer and I really enjoy making stuff up. That includes the setting. However, being able to draw on personal knowledge of unique aspects like lava caves will, hopefully, help the reader feel like they’re here in Central Oregon too.

-What’s next for you?

Super Bad, the third and final installment in my Super Villain Academy series will release in June. I’m so excited for readers to get their conclusion. I hope this final book continues to entertain as well as provides a few surprises. I know it did for me.

Immediately intrigued by his latest captive, he becomes interested in Maylin for more than just her blood, but he soon discovers that he must make a choice between his father and her.

Despite their attraction, Maylin and Thane each have an agenda, and only one can be the victor.

Book Excerpt:

I fired the gun.

Time slowed as the bullet spiraled toward his shoulder.

Another shot rang out, though I had no idea who had fired it.

My bullet pierced my target in the shoulder. It pushed him back, but it didn’t knock him off his feet. He released the girl, and her body crumpled to the ground. The second figure immediately crouched over her.

I fired at the man still on his feet, hitting him in the chest. His head snapped up, and he glared directly at me.

Shock assaulted my system. I sucked in air, my mind desperately searching for some logic to apply to the scene before me. His eyes glowed an eerie red, a luminous warning to stay back. Blood dribbled down his chin. I fired a third time, but his swift movements caused my bullet to miss its mark.

Before I could process what was happening, he was on me, his hands holding my head like a vice. He bit into my neck, and I swung my arms backward, hitting him with the butt of my gun.

“Enough!” a deep voice commanded.

My captor raised his head, but his hands kept me firmly in their grasp. Someone was crying, but I couldn’t turn my head to find the source.

A man stood in the shadows, and the two strangers who had attacked us stood quietly, reluctant to release their captives.

“I said ‘enough.’” The man strolled calmly toward us. As he reached the soft glow of the fire, I realized that he was tall, his body lean and muscular. He didn’t look nearly as old as I had first guessed. His height and authoritative voice disguised his youthfulness, and I detected just a hint of a European accent, probably British softened by years of being in America.

“Thane, surely you realize we’re hungry and there are so few of them left,” my captor implored in a soft Irish lilt.

“So you’ll solve our problem by killing them?”

“I won’t, but….”

Even though he still gripped my head, I took advantage of their distraction and snaked my gun across my waist and between my side and left arm. I squeezed the trigger, sinking a bullet into my captor’s stomach.

He grunted and hissed air out between his teeth, but his grip never lessened. How was it possible that gunshots seemed to have little effect on him?

In seconds, the one they had called Thane gripped my wrist, the sudden movement knocking the gun from my hand. He shoved my captor away from me and contained me with one arm wrapped around my body like an impenetrable band of iron.

Thane chuckled softly over my head. “Let’s not underestimate this one.”

Half Breed Queen Blitz

Half Breed Queen (Skatia Narratives, #1)
by L.A. Hendricks
Release Date: March 2015
322 pages

Book Summary (Goodreads):

Devastating tragedy puts 14-year-old high school freshman Marla Owens, on a fast-paced journey of survival, revival and coming of age. Driven by a force she can’t begin to understand and a burning need to find out the truth, she heads toward her mother’s home in North Dakota. She soon learns more about herself and her family than she could have ever imagined — her mother was royal heir to the powerful Skatian throne! And now the Skatian people need her to protect their world from those who wish to conquer it.

In a classic tale of good versus evil, set on Earth and beyond, a young girl fights to survive to become a young woman—and the reluctant queen of Skatia. Who can she trust? Will she be able to control her own immense abilities and justified anger to do what’s right? One thing’s for sure: Marla’s not in Texas anymore!

Book Excerpt:

“Don’t struggle, little heir. I need to take you back alive.” His voice sounded like a snake’s slither. He looked at Marla as though she were nothing more than money. His eyes, so pale a shade of blue they seemed white, made Marla shudder.

“Let me go!” Marla tried in vain to yank her arm away from her kidnapper, but he was a head or so taller and much stronger than she. He began to drag her down the street. “Who are you? How did you find me,” she asked through her teeth. People on the street were beginning to stare, but no one seemed inclined to intervene. She was trying hard to hold her temper, but could feel it begin to slip away from her.

“I am Dovidas, little princess. And as for how I was able to find you, your ability’s signature is very distinctive. All I had to do was follow your scent. Practicing all day, like a good little mark. It made my job much easier. I thought you’d have been smarter than that.”

“Please, stop. Let me go.” Marla was dragging her feet, refusing to walk. The man turned and slapped her. He picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder.

“Do not make me kill you, as Jurg had to kill your mother. I do not get paid if you are dead.” He took off down the street once again. There were still people around, but it now seemed they were not to notice them. It was as though the man had made them invisible or something.

Hearing this strange man talk about her mother so carelessly snapped the tenuous grasp Marla held on her temper. She could feel herself morphing, growing even – arms and legs growing longer and more muscular, hands and feet lengthening and becoming claw-like. The man felt the shift in Marla’s weight and looked up at her – and dropped her in surprise. Marla hit the ground with a noticeable thump. Her breathing was heavy and labored as her body changed.

The process took only a minute or two, but Dovidas was so stunned that he couldn’t move. The teenage girl he’d taken from outside the restaurant was changing before his eyes. He knew that the clan was from another world, but he did not realize that their human form was merely a disguise, and he certainly had never seen one in their natural form. The girl-beast on the ground before him was exceptionally terrifying, even to one such as Dovidas. He turned on his heel and ran away.

The motion drew Marla’s attention. She held her hand, if it could still be called that, out in the direction had taken off Dovidas was running. He stopped in mid-stride, frozen like a statue. Marla stood, stretching out and testing her new body. She slowly and deliberately walked over to Dovidas, enjoying his obvious fear.

Book Excerpt:

A spark in the air hurtled towards us. As it grew larger, I knew that the thing the ghost of Melusine had turned into was like a child’s toy compared to the creature descending upon us. Flames streamed from its nostrils with every breath, lighting up the sky. The dragon was the size of something from a monster movie poised to destroy New York City, but it flew gracefully above the buildings. Burgundy-colored scales covered it, but where the fire reflected off them, they sprang to vivid, crimson life.

As it landed on the edge of the terrace, its wings beat the air into powerful gusts and we were knocked to the ground. I could feel Peter’s wild joy where he crouched beside me, but I didn’t share it. Almost against my will, I looked up.

Straight into the slitted pupil of a giant eye.

I’d been afraid so many times in the past few months that I’d become an expert in discerning the subtle shadings hidden within the white of terror, but what I experienced now was pure nothingness. Just when I thought I would lose my mind, the warmth of the dragon’s power filled me. It was the color of a fire that warms a home in the middle of the winter, not burns it down.

Rise, little Earth Queen.

Dark Siren Excerpt: Hurry

The sound of her screams reached him as he neared the dorm. Pausing at the threshold, the man stepped inside. Death and the wind were at his back. Dozens of hollow-eyed students turned to observe his presence. Fear had twisted their youthful faces into horrific masks. A few of them wept. Others clung together as another scream echoed into the night. The man flinched. Then he steeled himself against all emotion. His kind was supposed to feel nothing.

He made his way through the crowd, students eagerly shuffling aside to let him pass. It was as if somehow they sensed in him the power to end her suffering. When a young man dressed only in boxers and a lettered shirt stepped forward from a cluster of solemn dorm mates, the man stopped. He recognized the boy.

“You are William. You are the one who called.”

“Yes, sir,” the young man said while nodding. His eyes were wide and frightened as he pointed ahead to a closed door painted prison grey. “She’s in there, sir.”

The man looked at the door, and then back at the boy. “Is she alone?”

William’s shoulders slumped with embarrassment. “I tried to stay with her but…” his voice trailed, dropping to a hoarse whisper. “She looks bad, sir. She wouldn’t stop screaming for me to get out. I got scared. I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright, son. You have done well.” The man laid a hand on the boy’s shoulder with an encouraging smile that reflected none of the sadness he felt. “She’s going to be okay.”

But her cries were becoming more tormented by the second. He quickly continued down the hall to the grey door. Behind it, he found her all alone. Her thin, pale body was curled on a beaten sofa in the center of the room. She was drenched in sweat. Dark hair plastered against her face, framing a beautiful canvas contorted with anguish. He placed a hand gently on her forehead.

Her eyes fluttered open. “Daddy?”

“I’m here, sweetheart. Everything is fine now.”

Sobbing in relief even as another surge of agony ransacked her strength, she gritted her teeth. “It hurts.”

Squeezing her hand, he spoke in a voice thick with regret. “I know. I’m sorry. Letting you come here was a mistake. I’ve waited too long.”

She was lost in the pain and didn’t seem to hear him. “I see horrible things. I did horrible things. There was so much blood.”

It hurt him terribly to see her in such distress. No matter what the others said, this girl had truly been his daughter. But right now, his love for her could not matter. He had a job to do. There were things he needed to know. There were questions he had to ask.

“What do you see?”

Bodies, hundreds of bodies littering the ground…” The words broke off as she rolled with another wave of misery. “They’re burned…old and young, women and children.” She sobbed again. “I think I burned them.”

“I’m going to give you something to stop the pain. It will help you sleep.”

“Please hurry, Daddy. Make it stop.” Her body shuddered. “I can’t take any more of this.”

She lifted her head, giving him a good look at her face. Surging veins had crept like black spiders from the corners of her eyes, transforming the surrounding skin into dark pools. She was deteriorating rapidly. If the process wasn’t slowed, the human form would soon be lost.

Summary from Goodreads:

A thrilling, futuristic sci-fi novel set in a unique and thought-provoking world, from author Shannon Duffy.

Desiree Six (because she was born on a Friday) believes in everything the Protectorate stands for. She likes the safety and security of having her entire life planned out—her career, her mate, even the date of her death. She doesn’t even think to question when Darian, her childhood friend and neighbor, is convicted of murdering his parents. They had seemed like such a loving family. But if he was convicted, then he must have done it.

Then Darian shows up in her room late one night. He has escaped from the Terrorscape—a nightmare machine used to punish all Noncompliants—and needs Desiree’s help. What he tells her rocks her world to its core and makes her doubt everything she’s ever been told. With this new information, will Desiree and Darian be able to escape the Protectorate before it’s too late?
