Author Interview

-What inspired Finding Thor?

One of my go-to movies when I’m looking for suspense and intrigue is National Treasure. Yet, I really love a good romance, too. One day I decided to see what would happen if I did a mash-up of National Treasure and Wuthering Heights.

-Wuthering Heights is rather tragic. What compelled you to add the sorrow to the story?

As a reader I really enjoy seeing a character overcome tragedy. In Finding Thor, the tragic incident happens six months before the story even begins, but Cara is still wallowing in it. There isn’t a lot in her life that spurs her to deal with it and move on. She doesn’t even realize how much meeting Nik Rock changes her until after many of the changes take place. I think a lot of the lessons we learn and the growth that we experience in real life is like that. It’s so much easier to see your path after you tamped down a trail through the tall grass.

-Why did you choose to set the story in your hometown of Bend, OR?

Once a month, I meet with a group of local authors to talk shop. One day several of them were discussing their books that were either set in or inspired by Central Oregon and I was a little sad that I couldn’t join the conversation. Since I was just starting this new project—my first romantic suspense—I thought it was the perfect time to choose a setting near and dear to my heart.

-How was knowing your setting different than making one up?

Knowing the scents and sounds, the temperature fluctuations, even the traffic patterns so intimately really helped me deepen the sense of place in the storyline. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fiction writer and I really enjoy making stuff up. That includes the setting. However, being able to draw on personal knowledge of unique aspects like lava caves will, hopefully, help the reader feel like they’re here in Central Oregon too.

-What’s next for you?

Super Bad, the third and final installment in my Super Villain Academy series will release in June. I’m so excited for readers to get their conclusion. I hope this final book continues to entertain as well as provides a few surprises. I know it did for me.

I fired the gun.

Time slowed as the bullet spiraled toward his shoulder.

Another shot rang out, though I had no idea who had fired it.

My bullet pierced my target in the shoulder. It pushed him back, but it didn’t knock him off his feet. He released the girl, and her body crumpled to the ground. The second figure immediately crouched over her.

I fired at the man still on his feet, hitting him in the chest. His head snapped up, and he glared directly at me.

Shock assaulted my system. I sucked in air, my mind desperately searching for some logic to apply to the scene before me. His eyes glowed an eerie red, a luminous warning to stay back. Blood dribbled down his chin. I fired a third time, but his swift movements caused my bullet to miss its mark.

Before I could process what was happening, he was on me, his hands holding my head like a vice. He bit into my neck, and I swung my arms backward, hitting him with the butt of my gun.

“Enough!” a deep voice commanded.

My captor raised his head, but his hands kept me firmly in their grasp. Someone was crying, but I couldn’t turn my head to find the source.

A man stood in the shadows, and the two strangers who had attacked us stood quietly, reluctant to release their captives.

“I said ‘enough.’” The man strolled calmly toward us. As he reached the soft glow of the fire, I realized that he was tall, his body lean and muscular. He didn’t look nearly as old as I had first guessed. His height and authoritative voice disguised his youthfulness, and I detected just a hint of a European accent, probably British softened by years of being in America.

“Thane, surely you realize we’re hungry and there are so few of them left,” my captor implored in a soft Irish lilt.

“So you’ll solve our problem by killing them?”

“I won’t, but….”

Even though he still gripped my head, I took advantage of their distraction and snaked my gun across my waist and between my side and left arm. I squeezed the trigger, sinking a bullet into my captor’s stomach.

He grunted and hissed air out between his teeth, but his grip never lessened. How was it possible that gunshots seemed to have little effect on him?

In seconds, the one they had called Thane gripped my wrist, the sudden movement knocking the gun from my hand. He shoved my captor away from me and contained me with one arm wrapped around my body like an impenetrable band of iron.

Thane chuckled softly over my head. “Let’s not underestimate this one.”

My Review:

I really enjoyed Awakening by Shannon Duffy. Right from the start this book caught my interest. It’s a very original story line filled with mystery, suspense, and very likable characters. The story takes place in a dark, Dystopian society. and is about a girl named Desiree that lives in a world where people die based off the day of the week they were born. At night they are hooked up to a machine that is called the Dreamscape and is the only way they can sleep at night. One night Darian, her childhood friend, shows up in her room. Darian is a wanted murderer that escaped the Terrorscape. Desiree decides to help him, not entirely believing that he really did kill his parents. Their paths continue to cross as Desiree uncovers more and more about the Protectorate and all it truly means. But as Desiree discovers more and more, she finds out how much the Protectorate has actually stolen from her.

I think Awakening is a great novel from an upcoming author and I think Shannon Duffy has a bright future ahead of her as she continues to grow and excel as an author. The story itself is VERY original and creative. And I think Shannon Duffy is a great story teller. I especially enjoyed Desiree’s character development. I think the characters in Awakening are very well defined and this, along with a very original story, are strengths of Shannon Duffy’s. I’d be very interested to read more books by her.

One of my favorite moment’s in this book is when Darian appears in Desiree’s room asking her for help. You can tell from their encounter right from the beginning that there’s something between them. And Desiree decides to help him anyway, even though he’s a convicted murderer. She listens to her heart instead of what others are telling her, and in that moment when she first meets him, I love her character. I also love Darian too, but he’s pretty charming in the book and it’s hard not to love him. And their love story is super cute. I loved it because there’s no love triangle, and their love isn’t complex. Sure there’s alot of complexity going on around them, but their story itself is sweet and perfect. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book where the love just happens naturally, but in this book it does and it’s wonderful to read a YA book like that.

One character I was surprised to enjoy was Archer. And I won’t say why because I don’t want to spoil anything. But Archer is a very complex, and intriguing character and his story plays out not as I expected, but as a welcoming surprise.

I love the concept of the Terrorscape. I love how little we know about the Terrorscape until towards the end of the book, which REALLY builds the suspense. Throughout the entire story we are told it’s more than it appears. And when it finally happens and we get to see what the Terrorscape is all about, its so fascinating and dark, it truly doesn’t disappoint! It’s pretty epic!

I can’t wait to read the sequel!

What I didn’t like:

Now, this is a small thing. But in the book there is some mentioning of women getting pregnant, having babies, and no one noticing. And every now and then I couldn’t help but think “how does no one notice these pregnant women?” These women work. People see them on a regular basis. Chances are some are going to have to have time off, maybe there’s complications, maybe someone has their baby early. Anywhere from a few days to a month at least will have to be taken off. How does no one notice these pregnant women? And these kids will live for years before anyone notices. It doesn’t make sense to me. If there had been some sort of explanation, lets say that every year employees get some sort of medical leave for being sick, or whatever, then I wouldn’t have mind. But in my head I just couldn’t understand how no one was noticing pregnant women. Again it’s a small thing, and it probably just didn’t catch anyone’s attention since the book itself is very suspenseful.

What I liked:

I loved the story, the concept of the Dreamscape and Terrorscape, and the very well developed characters. It’s definitely a book worth reading!

About the Author

Tracy Clark is a young-adult writer because she believes teens deserve to know how much they matter and that regardless of what they’re going through, they aren’t alone. In other words, she writes books for her teen self.

A spark in the air hurtled towards us. As it grew larger, I knew that the thing the ghost of Melusine had turned into was like a child’s toy compared to the creature descending upon us. Flames streamed from its nostrils with every breath, lighting up the sky. The dragon was the size of something from a monster movie poised to destroy New York City, but it flew gracefully above the buildings. Burgundy-colored scales covered it, but where the fire reflected off them, they sprang to vivid, crimson life.

As it landed on the edge of the terrace, its wings beat the air into powerful gusts and we were knocked to the ground. I could feel Peter’s wild joy where he crouched beside me, but I didn’t share it. Almost against my will, I looked up.

Straight into the slitted pupil of a giant eye.

I’d been afraid so many times in the past few months that I’d become an expert in discerning the subtle shadings hidden within the white of terror, but what I experienced now was pure nothingness. Just when I thought I would lose my mind, the warmth of the dragon’s power filled me. It was the color of a fire that warms a home in the middle of the winter, not burns it down.
