Rebel Spring (Falling Kingdoms #2) Teaser

1600004416000044

Book Summary (Goodreads):

The road to power…is paved with blood and magic.

Cleo is now a prisoner in her own palace, forced to be an ambassador for Mytica as the evil King Gaius lies to her people.
Magnus stands to eventually inherit the new kingdom but is still obsessed with his feelings for his adopted sister, Lucia.
Lucia is haunted by the outcome of the breathtaking display of magic that allowed her father to capture the kingdoms.
Jonas watched at the palace gates a troop of rebels behind him, waiting for him to tell them how he plans to overtake King Gaius.

After a bloody siege, Auranos has been defeated, its young queen orphaned and dethroned. The three kingdoms—Auranos, Limeros, and Paelsia—are now unwillingly united as one country called Mytica. But the allure of ancient, dangerous magic beckons still, and with it the chance to rule not just Mytica, but the whole world over….

At the heart of the fray are four brave young people grappling for that magic and the power it promises. For Cleo, the magic would enable her to reclaim her royal seat. In Jonas’s hands, it frees his nation, and in Lucia’s, it fulfills the ancient prophecy of her destiny. And if the magic were Magnus’s, he would finally prove his worth in the eyes of his cruel and scheming father, King Gaius, who rules Mytica with a punishing hand.

When Gaius begins to build a road into the Forbidden Mountains to physically link all of Mytica, he sparks a long-smoking fire in the hearts of the people that will forever change the face of this land. For Gaius’s road is paved with blood, and its construction will have cosmic consequences.

Book Quotes:

“Evil is a choice one makes, not a natural state of being.”
Morgan Rhodes, Rebel Spring

“A KISS! A KISS!” the crowd chanted.
(…)
“I dont know,” Cleo began, sickened by the thought of it. How far was she willing to go to appear agreeable? “Quite honestly, it seems like a bad–”

Magnus took a tight hold of her arm and turned her around. Before she could say another word, he put his hand behind her neck, drew her closer to him, and kissed her.

Every muscle in her body stiffened. It was the sensation of being a bird caught in a hinter’s trap. Her wings screamed out for her to fly away as fast and as far as possible. But he held her firmly in place, his mouth against hers, soft but demanding a response.

She gripped the front of his shirt. It was all too much–she wasn’t sure if she was pushing him away or pulling him closer. Much like diving into deep water, she had no idea which way would find her air to breathe or which way would drag her down deeper into the depths where she would surely drown.

And for a moment, just a moment, she found it didn’t seem to matter.

The warmth of his body against hers on such a cold day, his now-familiar scent of sandalwood, the heat of his mouth against hers…it all made her head spin, and logic fell away.
Morgan Rhodes, Rebel Spring

My Thoughts:

I’m anxiously awaiting for Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms #3) which is due to release on December 9th! I’ve read Rebel Spring and simply loved it! It’s an amazing fantasy novel and I simply cannot wait to see what happens next! Morgan Rhodes as crafted quite a transpiring world that is complex and filled with both goodness and darkness. I’m most interested in see more about Magnus because I LOVED Magnus in Rebel Spring. And what I love about Magnus is that I really have no idea if he’s going to end up as a good person or a bad person. But there is so much he has to offer as a character! Definitely check out Falling Kingdoms and Rebel Springs and get caught up before book three is released!

Quote 1:
“But if I’m it, the last of my kind, the last page of human history, like hell I’m going to let the story end this way. I may be the last one, but I am the one still standing. I am the one turning to face the faceless hunter in the woods on an abandoned highway. I am the one not running but facing. Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity’s last war, then I am the battlefield.”
Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave
Quote 2:
“I am a shark, Cassie,” he says slowly, drawing the words out, as if he might be speaking to me for the last time. Looking into my eyes with tears in his, as if he’s seeing me for the last time. “A shark who dreamed he was a man.”
Rick Yancey, The 5th Wave

Interview: Lily Paradis

About Lily Paradis:

Lily is 22 and recently graduated from the University of Colorado where she earned a degree in English Literature. She lives with her family and loves reading, running, and hiking. Although she’s a Colorado native, New York City is her favorite place in the world and fosters her borderline unhealthy obsession with the Empire State Building and F. Scott Fitzgerald. IGNITE is her debut novel.

The Page Unbound: How did you begin writing? Did you intend to become an author?

Lily: I’ve been writing since I can remember, but only writing seriously (as in pursuing it career wise) since about November of 2012. That was the first time I finished NaNoWriMo and felt like my baby novel could someday become a book that someone would actually enjoy. That one was Equilibrium, which is a sci-fi/historical fantasy type book – it’ll hopefully be out late 2015 or early 2016! I always wanted to be an author, but I didn’t know if I was good enough, or if it was possible.

TPU:  What inspires you to write?

Lily: I’m inspired when I least expect it, which I love. Music is wonderful. Sometimes I’ll put on my favorite song and scroll through Tumblr looking for inspiration, and that’s why I have those tagged boards on my page! I queue everything though, so it shows up like 100 days after I initially find it and I love seeing it when it comes back up and the things that come back up with it when it finally posts.

TPU: What is your writing process like?

Lily:  It used to be really scattered. I would write a scene whenever it came into my head and figure out where in the puzzle it went later. That was really difficult, so now I write down a sentence or two about it in my notes, then I mull it over in my head until I’m ready to get there in the manuscript. Sometimes that’s better because your brain puts it together better the more you think about it! I use Scrivener mostly. I only write in Georgia font. And I hate Word.

TPU: What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?

Lily: Editing. Especially with this book. A lot of things were missed due to file corruption, etc. It was NOT a good experience, but now I know how to prevent that in the future!

TPU:  What book or books have had a strong influence on you or your writing?

Lily: Sabriel by Garth Nix, will always have influence over how I write because it’s my favorite book of all time. I also love anything by Tarryn Fisher, and Volition is very much in that genre.

TPU: What authors do you like to read?

Lily: The last question semi answered this, but Garth Nix, Tarryn Fisher, Colleen Hoover, Kate McCarthy, and Nicole Williams.

TPU: What are you currently reading?

Lily: Currently reading my ARC of Clariel by Garth Nix, and I cried when I got it in the mail. It’s the fourth in the Sabriel series, and he hasn’t written a book in that one for a LONG time now, so this is amazing.

TPU: What project are you working on currently?

Lily: I’m working on finishing up Volition, which I’m really excited to share! It’s darker and edgier than Ignite by far, and I love that style.

TPU: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Lily: Write what you love. Write what YOU want to read. If you don’t love it, no one else will.

TPU: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Lily:  Thank you so much for having me, and for taking the time to review Ignite! It means the world to me!

Ignite (Ignite #1)

by Lily Paradis (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

After her father’s untimely demise in a mining accident and her mother’s abandonment, Lauren Lindsay is no stranger to loss. She’s used to living life for one person: herself. That is, until another family tragedy thrusts three children into her care and uproots her life in ways she could never imagine.

Lauren’s first instinct is to run, until she meets their striking, mysterious neighbor Dean Powell. Their immediate chemistry and his connection with her late father just might be enough to keep her in town long enough to uncover pieces of her past that she never had answers to. Dean’s shady past and her reluctance to trust him could cost her the life she’s always been searching for, but will she run back to her old life?

Or will she choose to stay and live the life her father always imagined for her?

Quote 1:

A split second later, I was opening my eyes, but I was disoriented for a new reason.  Something, or someone, ran into me and knocked my phone and paper license to the ground.

I bent to pick them up, but another hand went for the paper when I went for the phone.  I stood up, completely embarrassed that I’d just let my emotions get the better of me yet again.  In the DMV, no less.

Our eyes met, and I sucked in a breath.  He studied what he was holding and read off my name.  The sound of his deep voice caught me off guard.

“I’m so sorry, Lauren Annabelle Lindsay, five-five, hazel eyes, red hair, 3239 Summit Drive,” He said as he flashed a dazzling sideways smile at me.  From anyone else, this might have been too invasive.  But his guy knew he could say something like this to a girl and have it charming, rather than an I’m-going-to-stalk-you-home-and-kill-you-now kind of way.His mouth was raised up higher on one side, and I could see the faint outline of a dimple on his cheek.  I had the strange urge to reach out and touch it.

—- Ignite by Lily Paradis

Quote 2:

I just sat there, wondering if I was dreaming.  This was not happening.  It just wasn’t.  Why was Henry Cavill from the DMV in my living room?  Correction, why was he in Linda’s living room, and why was he touching me?

He held his hand out expectantly.

“Dean Powell,” He said, oozing confidence and grinning in a way that made me think he did this regularly.  Charming people, not rescuing girls who fell at his feet.

Well, that might be a regular occurrence too.

I held out my hand gingerly, feeling strange that Jed, not to mention Mary and Chase, were witnessing this little encounter.

“Lauren Lindsay,” I said.  “But you already knew that.”

He flashed another million dollar grin and I felt my traitorous stomach drop.

“Lauren Anabelle Lindsay,” he said.  “Can’t forget that Little detail.”

—- Ignite by Lily Paradis

My Review:

I really liked this book.  It has a very cute love story, but there is more to the story than just that.  The story is about relationships and change, which can be very hard to deal with sometimes.  The story is well written and the author really brought the characters to life.  Lauren and Dean were wonderful, but I adored Emma.  I think she was my favorite character.

Lauren has not had an easy life.  Her parents got divorced when she was younger and she decided to live with her mother, not because she liked her mother more, but because she was mad and hurt by her father’s actions.  Her mother ignored her and left her to her own devices.  Thankfully, she had her twin brother, Tucker.  Her father was killed in a mining accident and soon after that, she caught her boyfriend cheating on her.  She has not allowed anyone new into her life since then, because of her fear of being hurt.  Now her step mother has died and left her with the guardianship of three children. She isn’t sure she is up to the challenge, especially when she meets the brother of her stepsister’s best friend.

Dean is strikingly handsome, but doesn’t do relationships.  He was abused by his parents and after they died, he was put in the foster child care system, which wasn’t much better.  Lauren’s dad got him out of the child care system and became his mentor.  He helped him clean up his life and quit his substance abuse.  Dean felt like he lost his best friend when Lauren’s dad died, but he was determined to continue becoming a better person.  As soon as he was eighteen, he became the legal guardian of his sister Jenny, who had also been in the foster child care system.  Dean had a steady stream of girlfriends, until he met Lauren, then everything changed.  Can he become the man that Lauren needs?

This is a very clean romance, but there are a few swear words.  Just a word of warning for those who find that offensive.  The interaction between Dean and Lauren is wonderful.  I especially liked the interaction between Dean and Emma.  Any man that is so wonderful to a child is definitely a keeper.  As I said before, this book is more than just a love story.  There is a lot of action in this book as well.  The story kept me entertained and engaged right to the end.  The author is going to tell the story from Dean’s point of view in her next book, which will be called Arclight.  I will definitely be reading it.  I give this book four stars.

Dean Powell Character Interview

IGNITE-REVEAL

Dean Powell:

Dean Powell is the main love interest in Ignite by Lily Paradis. Dean is a very attractive man, a bit of a flirt, and doesn’t do relationships. He’s rather a complex character, with a surprising soft side. He’s had a really rough upbringing, which explains some of his behaviors. But through it all, he’s an amazing person that just wants to love and be loved.

Dean Powell Interview:

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? My name is James Dean Powell. I like long walks on the beach, and Lauren Lindsay.

How old are you Dean? Twenty-one.

Who is your favorite comic book hero? Oliver Queen from The Green Arrow. I looked him up after the admissions woman mentioned the show to us when I was showing Lauren around campus. I’m trying to make Lauren dress up as Poison Ivy for Halloween.

What college do you attend and what are you studying? University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, studying Biology.

What do you want to be when you finish college? My major is biology, so I’m considering medical school, but that might put a strain on everyone. Maybe once Emma is older.

Do you remember that incident in the steam room? Why did you let that happen!? Oh I remember. That wasn’t that unusual for who I was at the time, unfortunately.

What do you like most about Lauren? Everything. But you’ll learn the specifics in Arclight… 😉

What did you go searching for in the mines and did you find what you were looking for? You’ll learn the answer to this one too. Lauren still doesn’t know, and she thinks I’m an idiot for it. You can make your own judgment once you know, but there’s a hint as to what I was looking for if you look closely at Ignite.

How many girls have you dated?  Dated? One.

What is your ideal date? I have a few ideas… watching Sleeping Beauty on the couch, making s’mores and blanket forts, going to the Snow Ball…

What is the quality you most like in a woman? Compassion.

Who was your first love? Lauren Annabelle Lindsay.

Do you have a secret you can share with me? I lived in 19 different foster homes.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? It’s hard for me to let people in because of the trust that I’ve had broken in the past. It’s easier not to involve emotions, and that’s my weak point.

What is your happiest childhood memory? Getting to hold Jenny in the hospital when she was born.

What is your greatest regret? Most of my childhood and the decisions I made once I left the foster system.

What is your biggest fear? Who have you told this to? Who would you never tell this to? Why? My biggest fear is losing my family, because I already lost them once. It took a long time to get Jenny back, and even longer to find Lauren. I think it’s pretty well known considering my feelings for her.

Who was your role model growing up and why did you look up to them? I didn’t have one until Josiah Lindsay came along and made me stop acting like my father.

Do you have a problem that wasn’t mentioned in the story? You’ll definitely find this out in Arclight…

What do you think of yourself? First I hated myself, and then I didn’t feel anything at all. It’s slowly coming back.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? I think it’s pretty close to perfect right now.

How do you envision your future? I don’t like to picture the future because it gives a false hope for what it could be. But I’m pretty happy with the way things are right now.

Well thank you so much for taking a moment to answer our questions Dean. We look forward to hearing more about you in Arclight (Ignite #2).

Ashalllyn’darkmyr Tallyn(Ash)

Ash

“My name is Ashallyn’darkmyr Tallyn, third son of the Unseelie Court…Let it be known–from this day forth, I vow to protect Meghan Chase, daughter of the Summer King, with my sword, my honor, and my life. Her desires are mine. Her wishes are mine. Should even the world stand against her, my blade will be at her side. And should it fail to protect her, let my own existence be forfeit. This I swear, on my honor, my True Name, and my life. From this day on…” His voice went even softer, but I still heard it as though he whispered it into my ear. “I am yours.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron Queen

Megan Chase and her friend Puck go into the fairy world(Nevermore) to rescue her younger brother that has been kidnapped.  While traveling through the wyldwood, they are chased by Ash and they barely escape.  Megan sees Ash again at the Elysium.  It is held at the castle of the seelie court.  Megan is the daughter of Oberon and Ash is the son of Mab.  To show respect, Megan dances with Ash.  In the end, Megan promises to turn herself over to the unseelie court and in exchange, Ash will help to get her brother back.

Ashallyn’darkmyr Tallyn is the true name of Ash.  He is the youngest son of the Winter Queen, Mab and is prince of the Winter Court.  He has two older brothers, Sage and Rowan.  He is a strikingly handsome man with thick black hair, silver eyes, and pale skin.  He is tall, lean, and muscular.  Megan first describes him as looking cold, hard, and inhuman.  Later she describes him as a handsome inhuman faery that is a daredevil and very loyal to those he loves.  He has a strong  winter glamour and is a formidable swordsman.   Ash is often cold and mysterious.  He rarely expresses emotion and it is hard to know what he is thinking.  He can totally close off his facial expressions, appearing blank and unreadable.  He learned this from the winter fey,  who consider emotions a major weakness.  He is a fairly loyal person and true to his word.

Now we ask the question: Friend or Foe?

Does the character do things that have good consequences? or bad consequences?

It depends on where his loyalties lie.  When he was loyal to Mab, he did what he was ordered to do and many of those things had bad consequences.  But Mab is his mother and he was raised to be cold and inhuman.  He does however, agonize over the bad things he has done.  Ash gradually changes after meeting Megan.  He allows himself to feel again and starts making better choices.  So the answer is yes to both questions.  He has done things that have good consequences and bad consequences.

Do they perform acts for personal gain or to help others?

Ash doesn’t do things for personal gain.  He does them out of loyalty to others.  First to his mother and then later to Megan and Puck.  Although he would never admit to doing anything for Puck.

Are their personality traits noble and with good intent?

Many of his personality traits are very noble.  He is loyal to those that he loves and would fight to the death for them, if necessary.  Because of his upbringing, he finds it very hard to let others into his life.  If you should betray him, It will be a very long time before he would forgive you, if ever.  Puck found this out the hard way.  He accidentally caused the death of Ash’s first love.  Although, Ash did eventually forgive him.

Is the character dishonest?

No, he is true to his word as all fairies are.

Does the character only consider their own interests?

No, as I said before, he would do anything for those that he loves.  He always puts their interests first.

Does the character permit selfless acts?

Yes, Ash can be very selfless in his attempts to protect those that he loves.

If the character does something with bad consequences, were they taking a risky action that could have good consequences, but they were willing to take the risk?

Ash is a daredevil and a risk taker.  If it is with his own life, he will take the risk, but if it is with the life of someone he loves, he would be a little more cautious.

Did the character feel guilty about their poor actions?

Yes, he does.  He is very hard on himself.

Does the character kill without thought or reason?

No, their is always a reason and he agonizes over it later.

Does the character do things out of revenge?

Yes, sometimes.  He tried to kill Puck on several occasions, because Puck was responsible for the death of his first love, even though it was an accident.

My thoughts:

Ash did some horrible things while he was loyal to his mother, but he changed after being with Megan.  I wont hold his past against him, because he didn’t know any better.  He became a good person.  I would consider him a friend.  How about you?

She limped toward him, waving frantically. “Hey! Wait! Over here!”

“What the heck were you doing in there?” The annoyed words tumbled out and Bobby regretted them instantly. As she hobbled closer, he could see her white teeth and red-gold hair that gleamed like a coin in the sun.

“I was running. I wrenched my ankle.” The girl extended a hand. “I’m Gabe.”

Bobby took the girl’s hand and shook. “Gabe?” he stammered, his face gone hot.

“It’s short for Gabriella.”

Bobby dared a longer look at the girl. She was tall, only a few inches shorter than him, leanly muscled, with freckled-all-over milky skin that looked like it couldn’t withstand very much sun. Just the same, the fragile skin was stretched over sinewy muscle, an athlete sculpted from a bar of Ivory soap. This girl, Bobby decided, was durable. She didn’t look like she’d break too easily. His heart picked up speed of its own accord and he had to struggle to keep the tremor out of his voice. “You shouldn’t be talking to strangers.”

The girl laughed and shielded her light eyes against the sun. “You don’t look all that strange.”

Bobby shrugged. “You can’t always tell.”

“Well, tell me your name and then you won’t be just a tall, handsome stranger who picked me up on the side of the road.”

Bobby felt himself blush. She had called him handsome. But words came easily to this girl, words she probably didn’t mean, while for him finding the right words was like panning for gold. “Bobby. Bobby Pendell.”

“Short for Robert?”

“Uh, yeah. But no one calls me that. Except my dad when he gets pissed off.”

“Well, Bobby Robert Pendell, right now I have no choice but to rely on the kindness of tall, handsome strangers. My cell gets no reception out here and if I’m not back at the restaurant for dinner my dad’s going to kill me.”

Bobby peered at the girl from under his trucker’s cap. Definitely a weekender. She was too buffed and polished to be anything else. “Which restaurant? There’re three in town.”

Gabe snickered. “That many, huh?”

Bobby stuck his hands in his pockets and looked down at his scuffed work boots. It was a waste of time worrying what this girl thought of him. She was clearly way out of his league. And he had more important things to think about. “Look, I, uh—I got to get somewhere. I’ll give you a ride, if you want. But I got to hurry.”

“Where are you going?”

“My brother’s Little League game. Which is probably over by now.”

“Isn’t that the ball park right up the road?”

Bobby nodded. “Yep. That’s why we got to hurry if you want me to drop you at your restaurant. Would help if you just told me which one.”

“Why don’t I come with you?”

The girl was beginning to irk him. Maybe, like the cat that toyed with its injured prey before it pounced for the kill, she sensed her power. Like the girls at school. His high school was located in the bigger town of Waterbury, and the girls there all looked down on the so-called “hicks” from the more rural towns like Graxton and Fernville.

“To the game? Thought you were in a big hurry. I don’t mind driving you to the restaurant, though, if you’d just tell me which one.”

“I love baseball.”

“It’s just a Little League game.”

“I love kids.” She leaned down to pet Pete, who’d been circling her, wagging his tail. “I love dogs, too. I have plenty of time, if you’re giving me a ride.”

“Insistent, aren’t you?”

“I just got up here for the summer and I don’t know a soul. Basically, I’m lonely and bored. Besides, I throw a mean curve ball.”

The girl’s face broke into a wide smile and Bobby’s knees buckled a little. She was pretty. Really pretty. And she seemed a little desperate for company. He supposed it couldn’t hurt to let her join him.

“It’s not even summer yet. Don’t you have school?”

For a flash of a second, Gabe looked fidgety. Then she straightened and tossed her hair behind her shoulders. “My school’s out for the summer.”

“What kind of school gets done in May?”

Gabe looked him square in the eye. “The kind of school I go to.”

“What kind of sch—?”

She brushed past and, interrupting him, said, “C’mon, then. Get in the truck.”

He watched Gabe through the smeared glass of the truck windows. As she opened the door, Pete leapt past her and took his place on the seat next to Bobby.

She laughed and climbed in. “Looks like someone is used to having you all to himself.”

“Guess so.” Bobby started the truck, wishing he weren’t so damned tongue-tied all the time. He cleared his throat and forced out words, hating how gruff his voice sounded. He wished Coco were here. He would know how to talk to a girl like this. Coco could talk to anyone. “What restaurant were you going to?”

The girl smiled and patted Pete on the head. “The Graxton Grill, of course.”

“The Catskill House is where all the weekenders go.”

“Are you implying I’m a weekender?”

“You’re not from here. So that means you’re a weekender.”

The girl rubbed her ankle, then turned back to Bobby. “I’m here for the whole summer. So that makes me more than a weekender.”

“Why the Graxton Grill?”

“What are you, the local food columnist?”

Bobby’s mouth quirked up in a half-smile. “I think I have the right to know, since I saved you from the corn stalks.”

“My dad owns it.”

The air rushed out of Bobby’s lungs. “Your dad? Your dad is Max Friend?”

“That’s me. Gabe Friend. Sadly, also known as Gabby Friend. Welcome to my nightmare.”

“Gabby Friend?” Bobby stifled a snort. “That’s harsh.”

Gabe fixed him with a wry smile. “Imagine my life in middle school. Especially since I was too shy to utter a peep.”

Bobby didn’t talk much at school, either, but he couldn’t imagine this girl ever being bashful and shy.

“I work at the Graxton Grill,” he said finally. “Your dad is my boss.”

“Is that so?”

Bobby stole a glance at her, but she just stared out the window, suddenly disinterested. Had he offended her? He really had no idea how to talk to this girl. And, though he was pretty sure it was a bad idea, he really wanted to. Max Friend had a policy against employee dating—knives, fire, and romance are a bad combo, he had told them all the day the restaurant reopened. His daughter would be off-limits for sure. “Um, how’s your ankle?”

“Better. It was just a twist.”

It only took a minute to get to the ball field where Aaron’s Little League game was at the end of the sixth inning. Aaron was pitching a shutout, and in minutes the game ended. His team erupted in a roar, ran to the mound and mobbed the triumphant pitcher, but Aaron had already spotted Bobby watching from the sidelines and broke away from the tangle of bodies. Picking up speed, he barreled into Bobby’s arms, a bundle of sweaty hair, grime, and sparkling blue eyes.

“Dude! We won! We won! We made it to the playoffs!”

“I know. I saw!”

Aaron pulled away, noticing the stranger in their midst. “Who are you?”

“She’s,” Bobby stammered, “…a friend.”

Gabe smiled, all freckles and sunshine, and extended a hand. Bobby’s heart revved up inside his chest, but he kept his expression placid and flat, like the waters of Scratch Lake—before the weird turbulence earlier that morning.

“Literally. I’m Gabe Friend,” she said.

Frowning, Aaron looked from her hand to her face. “I never saw you before.”

“No, you haven’t,” Gabe said. “But I’ll bet I can hit any kind of pitch you can throw at me.”

Pete had picked up a stray ball and hunkered down, gnawing contentedly at it on the grass. Barely limping, Gabe strolled over to a bat that had been flung aside in the chaos. “We could go up on that hill and have a practice.” She gestured toward a sloping tract of mown grass that flattened at the top.

“Thought you were in a big hurry,” Bobby said.

“There’s always time for baseball.” Gabe glanced at her watch. “Besides, I still have time, if you’re giving me a ride. It’s only two-thirty and I don’t actually have to be at the restaurant until four for the dinner rush.”

Bobby glanced at Aaron. “It’s laundry night, but I guess it’s okay.”

Pensive, Aaron’s upper lip quivered into a sneer. Bobby laughed under his breath. Aaron never could walk away from a challenge or a fight. Which was why Bobby needed to show up from time to time at Aaron’s school playground at recess. “Bet you can’t.” Aaron wrestled the slimy ball from Pete’s jaws. “Give me that, Pete.”

Gabe gathered her hair into a hasty ponytail, revealing the sloping curve of her pale neck. Bobby tried to ignore the corresponding shiver that rushed from his thighs to his throat. “We shall see, won’t we, Little Pendell?” she said, hefting the bat over her shoulder.

“My name is Aaron,” his brother said emphatically.

Bobby chuckled as they trudged up to the hill, Aaron and Gabe in the lead. Aaron had no problem dealing with Gabe. Sometimes Bobby wished he were eleven again. In his memories, with Mom still around, those were golden times. But, then again, Aaron was much tougher than him, struggling with things eleven-year-old Bobby had never dreamed of.

Pete straggled behind, investigating the tall grass and weeds that marked the boundary between the neatly mown grass and the woods. The clearing at the top of the hill was bordered on three sides by state land, woods that stretched for endless miles to the east, and ended at the reservoir to the west.

“Go easy on her, A-man,” Bobby said when they’d reached the top of the hill.

“No need.” Gabe was already crouched in a batter’s stance, tapping the ground with the tip of the bat.

“You asked for it,” Aaron said, and let loose a fast, low-riding pitch. Gabe stepped quickly out of the way as it whizzed past.

“What are you, scared?” Aaron called out, laughing.

“That would have been a ball,” Gabe said, back in position, bat slung over her shoulder. “A little higher next time. I’m seventeen, not eleven.”

“Nice and easy, Aaron,” Bobby cautioned. All he needed was for the boss’ daughter to get hurt.

Gabe laughed and blew a stray strand of hair out of her eyes. “Oh, c’mon. I’m not made of glass and fluffy stuff. I play softball.”

Focusing, Aaron drew his pitching arm back and hurled the ball hard. It sailed cleanly toward Gabe at waist level and Bobby cringed, imagining it slamming into her stomach. But Gabe took a fierce swing. The bat connected with a loud crack and soared above Aaron’s head, clear into the woods.

“Hey! That was our only ball!”

“Pete’ll find it,” Bobby said. “He’s a hunting dog. Get it, boy! Go get the ball!”

The dog tore through the weeds into the woods, the three of them bounding after him. Gabe, apparently recovered from her strained ankle, was right on Aaron’s heels as they crunched between the towering oaks through the underbrush after Pete.

Pete had already stopped, sniffing at the ball, which had come to rest at the base of a large tree, when a strange tightness in his skull tugged Bobby in the opposite direction. His gaze fell on a faded strip of material snagged in the bark of a dead tree trunk. Drawn inexplicably toward it, he crunched through the ferns and dried leaves, the sounds of laughter and Pete’s barking muted, drowned out by the thump of his heart in his ears.

Standing at the base of the tree, his boots rooted to the forest floor, the back of Bobby’s head had begun to throb.

Not this again.

He reached for the strip of cloth as if sticking his hand into fire, and…saw the vague form of someone running wildly, breathing hard…

Crashing through the woods. Heart speeding, each beat like the swing of an axe. Can’t do it. Can’t run anymore. Have to stop. To stop.

Bobby yanked back his hand from the bit of cloth as though it had burned him. The vision still fluttered in front of his eyes like the final images from a broken movie projector. It was as if he were that person, hearing fragments of their frantic thoughts, yet he could see them as though he were watching from a distance.

It was like a memory. A vividly terrifying memory.

But it wasn’t his memory.

by Julie Kagawa

Book Synopsis (Goodreads):

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Book Quotes:

“Me? Die? Didn’t they tell you, princess? I’m Robin Goodfellow.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

War?” Something cold touched my cheek, and I glanched up to see snowflakes swirling in a lightning-riddled sky. It was eerily beautiful, and I shivered. “What will happen then?”
Ash stepped closer. His fingers came up to brush the hair from my face, sending an electric shock through me from my spine to my toes. His cool breath tickled my ear as he leaned in.
“I’ll kill you.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

“Careful, human.” Grimalkin appeared on the corner of the stage, overshadowed by the dead chimera. “Do not lose your heart to a faery prince. It never ends well.”
“Who asked you?” I glared at him. “And why do you always pop up when you’re not wanted? You got your payment. Why are you still following me?”
“You are amusing,” purred Grimalkin.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

My Thoughts:

This entire series is amazing! The story continues with Meghan in The Iron Daughter (book 2), The Iron Queen (book 3), and from Ash’s point of view in The Iron Knight (book 4). Each book just get’s better and better. Each of them are entirely epic andfantastic and the last book is my all time favorite of the entire series. If you like fantasy, fae, adventure, and a love story that’d doomed from the start, then be sure to check this book out! The first book always made me think of the movie the Labrinth since Meghan goes through the land of fae in order to find her brother, only with a few technological twists. And if you like the Iron Fey, be sure to check out Evan’s point of view in the Call of the Forgotten Series!  Check out The Iron King on Goodreads!
