Born in a demilitarized zone during the Vietnam War to a Vietnamese mother and American soldier, Sau Le arrived in the United States as a young woman with only twenty dollars in her pocket. Though bullied and abused since childhood, she nevertheless came to her new homeland armed with courage and determined to build a decent life for herself, her infant son, and her traumatized mother.

This is the story of how she overcame every conceivable hurdle—significant culture shock, a daunting language barrier, serious illness, heartbreak, and betrayal—to become a landlord, a successful business owner, a joyous wife and mom, and a woman blessed with generous, loyal friends. She describes an arduous journey, both physical and emotional, from a place of terror and utter despair to a life overflowing with love and prosperity.

Ultimately, this is a story of hope, something Sau Le thought she’d lost long ago in the minefields of Vietnam. Her goal is both to uplift and to remind everyone born on American soil that anything in this land is possible for those willing to put dedication, faith, and passion to work.

Praise for The Rebirth of Hope:

“Sau Le has an innate abundance of beauty, wisdom, loyalty and dignity which led her to overcome unbelievable challenges and fully realize her dream in America. Thus proving once again that adversity builds character. I couldn’t put it down.” —Dan Jenkins, bestselling author of Semi-Tough

“Sau Le lifted her head and walked through years of hard work and determination, inspiring other women along the way! Every word of her personal journey was written to remind all of us!”  —Robin Sanders, Sanders Travel Agency

“An inspiring story of a Vietnam refugee’s journey to achieve the ‘American Dream.’ This book is a lesson for everyone.”  —Martin C. Bowen, financial executive

“To have written this remarkable story is one more example of the focus and tenacity that Sau Le Hudecek has shown in achieving her previous goals. You will remember this gripping tale of resilience and courage.”  —Gail Williamson Rawl

“A truly inspirational story of a fearless person who overcame unbelievable odds to make a better life and obtain the ‘American dream.’”  —Janie Beggs

Review

Colorful haired mermaids and water manipulating naiads are a recipe of everything I wanted to read right now. Breakwater did an excellent job of bringing me an entirely different underwater world and keeping things very relatable. Tensions are high between the mers and the naiads with injustice and prejudice. It’s something we see everyday in reality. I’m sure with every story we read, the reader will always see similarities to their own world. Nothing is ever quite simple but this book brings something to light that is. Compassion.

The others characters like Pippa show that even with great loss, we can still find something for which to smile. Or Alexander who doesn’t fit in but works hard and eventually finds a home he enjoys. Even Jade’s mother shows acts of kindness despite the complicated position it would bring her. These characters and more come together in tragedy and upheaval and still persevere.

Jade’s compassion shines through a bleak and troublesome war brewing in her city and it what really drove me to loving this book. At one point, Jade describes heroic women from the past that jeopardized their lives but still persisted. This book is a great example for everyone, and especially young girls, about embracing differences and standing for what’s right. Even if you’re afraid. Well done Catherine Payne.

I enjoyed how mature this book could be while still keeping simple elements to the plot. It was an easy to read, fast paced, and thrilling story that I believe many will enjoy.

Internet Famous

Publication date: June 6th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Can an online romance survive in real life?

Internet sensation Madison Nakama has it all! Her pop-culture rewatch site has a massive following, and fans across the world wait on her every post and tweet. Even Madi’s dismal romantic life seems ready to take off as Laurent, a fellow geek (and unfairly HOT French exchange student!) starts flirting with her in the comments section of her blog. But Laurent’s not the only one watching for Madi’s replies.

Internet fame has a price, and their online romance sparks the unwanted attention of a troll. When Madi’s “real life” hits a rough patch, she feels her whole world crumbling. With Laurent’s support, can Madi rally her friends across the globe to beat the troll, or will he succeed in driving her away from everything―and everyone―she loves?

Excerpt:

This guy looked more like a college student than high school senior, but there were too many other clues to ignore. Madi’s stomach twisted. Oh God—there’s no way this is happening.

“You’re Madi,” he repeated. “From the MadLibs blog, right?”

“I am,” she said, then forced a smile. “I know this sounds weird, but how do you pronounce your name?”

“It’s Laurent.” The way he said his name tipped her off: Luh-Ron. It rhymed with Lebron—the accent on the second part of the name—clearly masculine. Laurent Abelard, not Lauren Tabelard! she realized. Madi fought the urge to face-palm.

“I didn’t realize it was you,” she said. “I thought you were a girl.”

“I didn’t either. I thought you were—” He laughed. “I don’t know. Someone else. I expected someone… different.”

“Different?”

“I don’t know. You just look like—like—”

Madi’s wanton perusal came to a screeching halt. What. The. HELL.

“Like what?” she snapped.

“Like a blogger.”

“A blogger? What’s that supposed to mean?!”

He shrugged “I… I don’t know. You’re just not what I expected.”

Madi drew herself up to her full height, vibrating with anger. “Sorry to disappoint you, but there are lots of people who look lots of ways—”

“But I only meant—”

“—and bloggers come in all shapes and sizes—”

“Yes, I know, but—”

“—and MadLibs has a HUGE fanbase! Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to my site each month. I’m eighteen years old. I’m an entrepreneur. I’m not some—some kid, or something!”

Laurent recoiled from the screen, his face blanching. “Ah, non! Ce n’est pas le cas! I-I’m so very sorry. I didn’t mean it like that. I just—I messed up. I didn’t think—I-I—Pardonnez-moi, s’il vous plaît. Je ne veux pas vous ennuyer…” His words tumbled out faster and faster, disappearing into a blur of anxiety-ridden French.

And that was the moment, Madi realized, when she knew she was going to fall and fall hard, because nothing was more romantic than a language you couldn’t understand and a young man who was anything but American who was spouting apologies and wringing his hands. (That doing it onscreen made him look like a matinee idol from some brooding French film was an added bonus.)

A curious toddler loves to play…especially with his mommy’s smartphone!

When Mommy finds him using her phone without permission, it’s the perfect teaching moment.  Mommy reminds her little one that what matters most in life is time together filled with love and attention.
Her simple reminder: Put down our phones.
Praise for #BabyLove: My Toddler Life:
“This poignant and entertaining tale about a playful toddler aimed at young lap readers works on a much deeper level for parents.” – Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)
“This light-hearted reflection on social media habits is a great tool for starting discussions with young children.” — Forward Clarion Reviews (5 Stars)
“Dehghanpisheh’s illustrations and text are simple, colorful and charming, and many families will relate to the question of how, and how much, to integrate technology into their child’s day.  #BabyLove: My Toddler Life is a fun and timely picture book for 21st century preschoolers. — BlueInk Review

“I can’t wait to read this to my 2 year old grandson.  This book is his life curious, sweet and funny.  His mommy has a collection of his photography on her phone.  Priceless. — Kindle Verified Purchase

#BabyLove: My Toddler Life was my first children’s book I’ve written a review for. This book was light hearted and and sweet. The story follows a toddler as he sets out to do all things kids do, play. His mom takes pictures of them, and also takes pictures of the toddler as he plays. Of course, then mom has things to do, and the little boy does what toddlers do best, get into things they shouldn’t.

It’s neat to see a children’s book that incorporates technology. In fact, as a teacher, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a children’s book that was centered on a cell phone or iPad and I love seeing this used in a children’s story. Technology is such a huge part of our lives, and I think this story is something each child could relate to. I also enjoyed the rhyming quality this book had. It’s cute and the rhythm makes it catchy and easy to read.

Not only were the rhymes and story wonderful, but the illustrations were simple, yet creative and eye catching. I can see how reading this to my kids in a classroom, which are special needs students, would be a wonderful teaching tool for them to use. The illustrations have clear backgrounds, which is easier for my children to identify things if I ask them to point to something. The images are not busy, like some children’s books, which also helps my children find items I ask them too. It also clearly shows the emotions on the child’s face, another tool that would be helpful in teaching my children. There’s so many things I could use this book for in my classroom, teaching colors, emotions, and identifying objects, just to name a few targets. I don’t think I could recommend this book enough for using in the classroom, or enjoying the book at home with your child. There’s many different teaching strategies that could be used for this book, and at the same time for teaching these different targets, the book is entertaining, so while the students are learning, they are enjoying a good story in the process.

I also loved the stickers that came with the book, something else that I know children would love.

I would use this book in my classroom with my special needs students, but it’s also a book I would read with any child. The story is adorable, the illustrations are wonderful and cute, and the lyric like quality to the rhythm of the words makes this an enjoyable read for anyone. Be sure to grab a copy for your child or classroom! It’s perfect!

Black Dawn by Mallory McCartney

Publication Date:  February 14, 2017

Publisher:  Clean Reads Publishing

Synopsis:

The end of an Empire, the rise of a Queen

Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and upon Emory’s arrival she will discover she is the long-lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.

With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.

Some things are better left in the shadows

Excerpt:

Jaxson sat on a wooden perch, his chin resting on his hands as he stared longingly onto the horizon. She spoke softly, “Go to bed, Jaxson, I have it from here.”

Snapping to attention, he jumped slightly, not having heard her come in. “Nyx, you scared me a bit there. How are you?”

She winked at him. “Needing some starlight and an endless night.”

Nodding solemnly, Jaxson hopped down. Before leaving, he placed a burly hand on her shoulder. “We have to be prepared not to give up hope. For Alby.”

His words were like a weight anchoring onto the ocean floor. Nyx climbed up on the perch as Jaxson left, the door swinging closed behind him. Nyx closed her eyes. She could move forward with this. It was already too late. She had pushed Memphis to make his decision. He believed in Emory like he had never believed in her. He had and would always choose Emory. Her chin wobbled as her eyes snapped open. There was no going back now. She silently said goodbye to the man she loved as her eyes searched the land stretching out in front of her. To her left, the woods, and beyond that, an escarpment of mountain terrain…and Adair. It was as simple as breathing as Nyx reached out, her mind brushing against a thousand consciousnesses. A thousand whispers sounded back to her. She searched only for one. She didn’t have to wait long.

Best places to go writing and why

Thank you for having me!! Personally, I thrive on routine, and when it comes to my writing spaces I am a creature of habit! I have my writing nook in my home, which is nicely framed by my bookcases. When I hike, I always carry my notebook and take down lines and ideas when they come to me. I have my favorite coffee house as well, though this is a place I only write at once and a while. I tend to get deep into my world when I work, so for me personally my best place to write is in my nook, where I can be utterly transported (plus my dachshunds for company!). Also hiking, using the inspiration of nature to get my creative juices flowing. I think the best places to write really depends on the author themselves, where they are comfortable, and is different for everyone as individuals.

AUTHOR INFO:

Mallory McCartney currently lives in London, Ontario with her husband and their two dachshunds Link and Lola. Black Dawn is her debut novel, the first in a series. When she isn’t working on her next novel or reading, she can be found dog grooming, book shopping and hiking. Other favorite pastimes involve reorganizing perpetually overflowing bookshelves and seeking out new coffee and dessert shops.

The feudal tension has already claimed red-blood Breaker’s leg and his older brother. Now all this 18-year old wants is to maintain the tenuous peace in order to keep his little ‘stroid of a brother alive. Malani, a red-blood raised blue, is a kidnapped POW and only wants to return to her adoptive home with her dangerous blue secrets. Top 3 Favorite Writing Places:

Because I have Chronic Migraine, leaving my house to write someplace cool is really difficult for me. There’s a lot of outside stimuli I can’t control that my brain instantly interprets as pain. Instead, I’ve built places within my house that work for both writing and migraining! So here are my top 3 places to write and why:

1. My office.

I always need a clean desk in order to write. A messy desk means my brain is messy and I can’t create when my thoughts aren’t organized! There’s a giant board above my desk where I’ve pinned inspiring quotes and pictures—all the things that give me little creative nudges. I love looking at it when I’m creatively stuck. I even have a massive lounge chair where I can take a nap mid writing session! Plus, I can close all the shades and turn my office into a vamp cave whenever my brain is hyper light-sensitive. It’s the perfect set up for an author with Chronic Migraine.

2. My loft.

I have this random loft in my house that I transformed into an art studio. I have a really comfy, really ugly chair up there (seriously. It has this purple floral pattern my mom thought was cool twenty years ago) along with a keyboard, easels, canvas, and way too much splattered paint. Just sitting up here makes my soul happy. So sometimes I’ll nestle in and type away, surrounded by color and texture.

3. My mini library.

I grew up in California. Nobody cares what size fork or spoon you use for meals. Nobody has a fancy-pancy dish set. And nobody has a formal living room. So when I moved into a house, I had no idea what to do with this entire extra room sitting by the front door. Why have a room you’re never going to use? Solution? Turn it into a library! Now, anytime I need a cozy spot to read or write while surrounded by great works of literature, I go to this room. I tend to do most of my writing research in here, curled up and surrounded by books Belle-style.

Bonus:

When I do feel good enough to get out the house, I really enjoy writing at my local indie bookstore. Again, being surrounded by great books is an amazing feeling. Then I can also wander the aisles while taking a break. There’s something so comforting about running your fingers along all the spines.

Confession: this option is really bad for my budget. I almost always end up walking out with out least two new books.

Thanks so much for having me today!

The Adventures of Miss Vulpe: Excerpt and Giveaway

THE ADVENTURES OF
MISS VULPE
A Coming of Age Story for Adults
by
MARIA ELENA SANDOVICI
Genre: Contemporary / Women’s Fiction / Coming of Age
Date of Publication: April 7, 2017
Number of Pages: 160

Ana Petrescu (aka Miss Vulpe) is a troubled teenager determined to solve the mystery of her parents’ double suicide. Escaping the scrutiny of her legal guardian and the unwanted interference of several therapists, she starts looking up people from her mother’s past. Her sleuthing requires her to lie about her identity, her age, and her lack of experience with men. While impersonating Miss Vulpe is more fun than going to school, there’s bound to be trouble and heartache when her web of lies unravels.

From Ana’s story

Next to an illegal GPS, the cabbie has a whole display of Greek Orthodox icons. Praying probably comes in handy since he drives like a maniac, the car is a piece of junk, and there are no seat belts in the back. She loves this last detail, especially since Rogers asks her to buckle up, and she can disobey through no fault of her own. The music blasting through shabby speakers is delightful. New music has come out since she’s been gone. New songs to form a soundtrack to her city. The trees are still in bloom, birds chirp, and there is a lyricism to everything that contrasts with the heavy traffic, the honking, and the swearing. Her city is a beautiful and complex universe, a labyrinth of the absurd and the delightful. She takes in the wide boulevards lined with trees, promenades, and stately mansions with the same delight with which she surveys the grey buildings, vestiges from hard times she hasn’t lived, the shop windows displaying new and colorful wares, the travel-weary commuters waiting at bus stops, and the occasional spiffy-dressed cyclist upon whom their pot-bellied driver finds it appropriate to bestow a whole litany of insults. Apparently hipsters on bicycles are destroying the city. Ana smiles. She’s been gone three years, and her city has a new energy to it. Her magical metropolis has even more zest for life than before, and whether the cab driver wants to accept this or not, both he and the pretty girls cycling in skirts on colorful bicycles are part of this, like a yin and yang. There’s so much old stuff she’s missed, and so much new stuff she wants to discover. Chic coffee shops and bookstores and boutiques, cobbled streets and renovated facades, old dusty shacks about to crumble, and through it all that penchant for both romance and anxiety that no other city in the world, she’s sure of it, can throw in your face with such self-deprecating humor.

Maria Elena Sandovici lives in Houston with her dog. She travels to Bucharest often and also to Spain, but her favorite trip remains 45 South to Galveston. She has an art studio at Hardy and Nance in the Warehouse District, open the third Saturday of every month, blogs daily at havewatercolorswilltravel.com, and writes poetry in the voice of her dog. She is also the author of three previous novels about women who are struggling with finding their place in the world.

Books Synopsis:

Secrets and survival in the Amazon

Emily Duran is the sole survivor of a plane crash that left her and her teenage friends stranded and alone in the jungles of the Amazon. Lost and losing hope, they struggle against the elements, and each other. With their familiar pecking order no longer in place, a new order emerges, filled with power struggles, betrayals, secrets and lies. Emily must explain why she’s the last left alive.

But can she carry the burden of the past?

Discover the gripping new adventure novel that explores who we are when no one is watching, and how far we’ll go in order to survive.

My Review:

Emily wakes in the drowning waters of the Amazon, not able to recall what had just happened to her. Then to her surprise, she’s not alone. There’s a small band of survivors that managed to live through the horrible plane crash. They set out to find a village, desperate for help. They trek through the Amazon, unaware that the real danger isn’t what creatures are found deep inside the deadly rainforest, or the starvation that gnaws at their bellies. The real danger is much worse than that.

This book had me hooked at page one. Emily Duran is the sole survivor of a plane crash. We’re first introduced to Emily as she is healing from her encounter deep in the Amazon, a place that brought out much more than fear in Emily. James Morris tells the story through a series of flash backs, giving us bits and pieces of the story as it unfolds. Throughout the book I couldn’t help but keep asking “What happened to Emily?” “What happened to the other survivors?” Eager for the answers, I finished this book in one day. These characters literally transformed on the page, from who they were, to the survivors on the Amazon. And their transformation is truly the beauty in Feel Me Fall. Not to mention it had quite a marvelous ending.

This survival story is gripping and intense, with quite a few unexpected turns. Layer by layer, James Morris reveals to us just a little more of each of the characters that has you questioning their morality and honesty as you race to finish the ending. This book is fast paced, and places you on the edge of your seat. Each character has their own story to tell, and each of them demands to be heard. Their past, their present… They’re the kind of characters whose story seems to leap of the page.

If you like stories that are suspenseful and intense, filled with amazing characters, a captivating survival story, and a kick ass ending, then be sure to check out Feel Me Fall!

After serving seventy years in prison for the murder of her sister, Eula, Della Lee has finally returned home to the Texas town of Puerto Pesar. She’s free from confinement—and ready to tell her secrets before it’s too late.

She finds a willing audience in journalist Mick Anders, who is reeling after his suspension from a Boston newspaper and in town, reluctantly, to investigate a mysterious portrait of Eula that reportedly sheds tears. He crosses paths with Dr. Paloma Vega, who’s visiting Puerto Pesar with her own mission: to take care of her ailing grandmother and to rescue her rebellious younger sister before something terrible happens. Paloma and Mick have their reasons to be in the hot, parched border town whose name translates as “Port of Regret.” But they don’t anticipate how their lives will be changed forever.

Moving and engrossing, this dual story alternates between Della’s dark ordeals of the 1940s and Paloma and Mick’s present-day search for answers―about roots, family, love, and what is truly important in life.

Inspiration for Before the Rain Falls

Guest Post by Camille DiMaio

A common question for an author is, “Where did you get your inspiration for your book?”

This was an easy one for my debut novel, The Memory of Us. It was inspired by the classic Beatles song, Eleanor Rigby. Immediately, people’s eyes would light up in recognition and it was a great starting point for conversation.

The answer for my second novel, Before the Rain Falls, is much more convoluted. Like the kind of dream where a red elephant tiptoes through a bed of nails blowing bubble gum.

Nothing there seems to be connected, but in your head, in your sleep, it all makes perfect sense.

So, how’s this:

A mysterious, possibly crying portrait.

A murder.

A grandmother who won’t let anyone buy her an air conditioner even though she swelters day by day in the Texas heat. (That was my grandmother. Wouldn’t let any of her ten children try to relieve this particular suffering.)

A journalist who is trying to resurrect his career after a scandal.

A doctor who is trying to find her purpose.

It did start with the portrait, however, and like the air conditioner, my grandmother was the inspiration. She was the sort who believe in every kind of Jesus-on-a-pancake apparition.

So, along with a documentary I caught on tv about whether or not various “miracles” were real or staged, the image of a portrait, reputed to be shedding tears, came to mind.

That begged the question:

Is it crying? Or is it a fake?

Which begs more questions, like one of those darned factor trees in middle school Math.

If it’s crying, why? How?

If it’s a fake, why did someone do that? What did they gain from it?

I mulled this over. And discovered that this seed of a story I had was not really about the portrait. The portrait was a launching point of something that I knew was bigger.

I do tell you, later in the book, about the tears. But, no spoilers will be had here.

Back to more questions, which I self-answer. This is how an author’s mind, or at least mine, works. We talk to ourselves.

Who is in the portrait?

Immediately, I thought of a beautiful young girl.

Why might she be crying?

She was murdered.

Why was she murdered?

Her sister did it.

Why did her sister do it?

Well, maybe she didn’t. She just went to jail for it.

Oh, new set of tangents.

If she did it, why?

If she didn’t do it, why didn’t she fight her sentence?

Ah! Now we have something.

(See? Conversations for one. An author would have no problem taking herself to dinner. The chatter is riveting.)

That last thread became the bones of my story, and I began to flesh it out.

If she did it, why?

If she didn’t, why didn’t she protest her imprisonment?

I thought on these questions. And thought. The ending came to me pretty quickly. Again, no spoilers. And early reviewers have told me that they didn’t see it coming.

It’s the how to get there that is fun.

And difficult.

And so my dual-timeline, triple-narrator story came into existence as I wove those unusual threads together into something that I hope will be a compelling read to you.

One more thing. I began writing it during a particularly hot and humid spell in a Texas July. So there’s a lot of heat, and I don’t meant the sexy kind. Because I was just too sweat-soaked and droopy to imagine any other kind of setting. All the reviewers who told me that they felt the heat, it’s because I was living it for you.

I took that bullet. If you need to warm up a bit in January, pick it up as a winter read and let it warm you up. Then, let me know what you think!

Camille recently left an award-winning real estate career in San Antonio to become a full-time writer. Along with her husband of 19 years, she enjoys raising their four children. She has a bucket list that is never-ending and uses her adventures to inspire her writing. She’s lived in Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and California, and spends enough time in Hawai’i to feel like a local. She’s traveled to four continents (so far), and met Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II. She just about fainted when she had a chance to meet her musical idol,
