Book Summary:

Katya knows all about Stalin’s big plans; she learned of them in school. But those plans mean little to her until the secret police arrest Papa and seize their family farm. With Mama and her younger siblings, Katya is shoved into a crowded train headed for a forced labour camp in Siberia. Torn from everything she has ever known, Katya faces cold and hunger, and the ever-present threat of lost hope. As she clings to a single red stone from the fields of her homeland, she questions life. Where is Papa? Will she ever see him again? And what will become of Katya’s family?

Inspired by a true story, Red Stone explores the trauma and heart¬break suffered by many families in the Soviet Union during the 1930s when Stalin seized individual property and villainized property owners as kulaks.

New York Times bestseller James Lee Burke returns with his latest masterpiece, the story of a father and son separated by war and circumstance—and whose encounter with the legendary Holy Grail will change their lives forever.

From its opening scene in revolutionary Mexico to the Battle of the Marne in 1918, and on to the bordellos and saloons of San Antonio during the reign of the Hole in the Wall Gang, House of the Rising Sun is an epic tale of love, loss, betrayal, vengeance, and retribution that follows Texas Ranger Hackberry Holland on his journey to reunite with his estranged son, Ishmael, a captain in the United States Army.

After a violent encounter that leaves four Mexican soldiers dead, Hackberry escapes the country in possession of a stolen artifact, earning the ire of a bloodthirsty Austrian arms dealer who then places Hack’s son Ishmael squarely in the cross hairs of a plot to recapture his prize, believed to be the mythic cup of Christ.

Along the way, we meet three extraordinary women: Ruby Dansen, the Danish immigrant who is Ishmael’s mother and Hackberry’s one true love; Beatrice DeMolay, a brothel madam descended from the crusader knight who brought the shroud of Turin back from the Holy Land; and Maggie Bassett, one-time lover of the Sundance Kid, whose wiles rival those of Lady Macbeth. In her own way, each woman will aid Hackberry in his quest to reconcile with Ishmael, to vanquish their enemies, and to return the Grail to its rightful place.

House of the Rising Sun is James Lee Burke’s finest novel to date, and a thrilling entry into the Holland family saga that continued most recently with Wayfaring Stranger, which The New York Times Book Review described as “saturated with the romance of the past while mournfully attuned to the unholy menace of the present.”

Mayan Blood Character Interview and Giveaway

 Mayan Blood (Stone Legacy #1)
by Theresa DaLayne
Release Date: December 29th 2015
Limitless Publishing

Summary from Goodreads:

Their empires have fallen, but their mythology lives on…

Zanya Coreandero is a seventeen-year-old orphan with only a single friend and no hope for a normal life. Diagnosed with anxiety and night terrors, no one believes her cuts and bruises are a result of an evil entity, and not a brutal case of self-harm.

With the only home she’s ever known being the isolated institution—where breakfast is a handful of medications, the psychiatry sessions are mandatory, and her every move is watched—the only relief is her red-haired roommate named Tara, who’s more like a little sister than her best friend.

Free will is strong, but destiny is stronger.

When Zanya is kidnapped, she meets a group of gifted Mayan descendants, each with a unique ability. Gone from a nameless castaway to the only hope of mankind, Zanya is forced to make a grueling decision: bond with an enchanted stone and save humanity from rising underworld forces, or watch helplessly as Earth falls victim to a familiar dark deity from her dreams. This time, he’s playing for keeps.

A wicked secret hides behind a handsome face…

When Arwan, a dark-eyed timebender, takes interest in Zanya’s mission, it’s unclear if his intention is to help, or if he’s on a hell-bent mission for revenge. Wary of falling for another guy with major secrets and a tainted past, Zanya fights to keep her distance. If only her heart gave her a choice.

Character interview with Thresa DaLayne

Character Name: Arwan

Character Bio:

Orphan and gifted Riyata, Arwan grew up at Renato’s estate in Belize after his mother was murdered by an underworld enemy. For years he has denied his Mayan ancestry and shunned his bloodline. Now that Zanya—the Stone Guardian—is back and bonded with her stone, he must face the darkest part of his soul in order to find the revenge he continues to seek.

I don’t have a photo of Arwan, nor do I want to assign one. He is a unique looking twenty-something year old with tan skin, dark eyes, sharp cheekbones, long-ish dark hair, and a keen talent for martial arts. He also has a very rare ability called timebending, which he does not often use in fear of changing the course of history and affecting the future in negative ways that he cannot undo.

If you can add a dreamcast pic of the character that would be awesomeJ

Me: Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

Arwan:

Focus. Normally that would be a good quality, but I tend to be overly focused on a goal and do not stop perusing it until I’ve accomplished it.  Maybe that’s how I earned Zanya’s affections. Once I knew I wanted her, I couldn’t stop until I made my best effort to earn her trust.

Me: Have you?

Arwan: It’s a work in process.

Me: Do you think you deserve her trust?

Arwan: No. Not in the least.

Me: Why?

Arwan: Can we move to the next question please?

Me: Why?

Arwan: Because I’m not entirely comfortable telling you something I haven’t told her first.

Me: Fair enough. What about your best quality?

Arwan: I would say patience. I need patience while training—especially with Peter due to is lack of practice. He spends far too much time with Tara and not enough time in the dojo.

Me: It sounds like you’re angry with him.

Arwan: Angry? No, I’m not angry. Just…concerned. I don’t want him to fall behind. But knowing Zanya now, I can’t blame him for being hesitant to leave Tara. It’s hard to be away from the person you care about.

Me: What are you most afraid of?

Arwan: Failure. I’ve worked my entire life to prepare for the moment I can finally avenge my mother’s death. Plus, now I have more than just myself to protect. There’s no one else to lead the rest of the group, and I have to be there. It’s my job, and I can’t fail.

Me: What do you want more than anything?

Arwan. Peace.

Me: What kind? There are a lot of kinds of peace.

Arwan: All kinds. For too many years I’ve struggled to achieve inner peace, but that’s not possible because of who…what, I am. Maybe someday I can find a balance. That’s about the best I can hope for.

Me: What is your relationship status?

Arwan: It’s…complicated.

Me: You’re not going to improvise, are you?

Arwan: No, I’m not.

Me: Okay then. How much of a rebel are you?

Arwan: I think that’s more of a question for Jayden. Me? I prefer structure. Though I suppose Renato wouldn’t completely agree with the current events.

Me: What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?

Arwan: Taking control of my darker side. Commanding it. That is by far my greatest achievement to date.

Me: What is your current state of mind?

Arwan: I’m nervous.

Me: Why?

Arwan: Because I’m not used to people probing into my personal life. Into my head. Marzena, the young dreamwalker, gives me space. She doesn’t intrude into my thoughts. This interview feels a lot like when she reaches into my head.

Me: What is your most treasured possession?

Arwan: Does it have to be an object?

Me: Yes.

Arwan: My glaive.

Me: What’s that?

Arwan: It’s a weapon I use in both training and fighting—a spear with a long, curved blade at the end.

Me: You don’t have anything more personal you cherish?

Arwan: I don’t have many personal items. I’ve never needed them. I live with Renato, have the dojo at my disposal, and the jungle as my refuge.

Me: Which living person do you, most despise?

Arwan: I suppose it would be wrong to say Jayden. *grins *

Me: I don’t think Zanya would be thrilled to hear you say that.

Arwan: No, she wouldn’t. And in reality it’s not the truth.

Me: So who is it?

Arwan: Sarian—and my father. Both of them equally and as fiercely. The end.

Me: What is your greatest regret?

Arwan: Existing.

Me: Why?

Arwan: I’d rather not elaborate. Are we almost finished?

Me: Yes, we are. Lets change things up. What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Arwan: Stubbornness and self-confidence.

Me: Most men dislike a stubborn woman.

Arwan: Not me. It tells me she knows what she wants. I like that.

Me: Which living person do you most admire?

Arwan: My mentor, Renato. He is like my father, and I have great respect for him.

Me: What is your motto?

Arwan: You always have a choice.

Me: We’re all finished up. Once again, Arwan, thank you for the interview.

Arwan: Great. Thank you.

Stranded in Luntharda with his partner, Lieutenant Jace Rordin, Jaevid must finally confront the demons of his own past as he uncovers the truth about a war that began before he was ever born. Fledgling NEW 1800x2700

When Jaevid Broadfeather is given the rare opportunity to become a dragonrider for the king’s army, the 15-year-old boy has no idea that he is part of a conspiracy that will rock the very foundations of the kingdom.

Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels his future is hopeless, until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him in Blybrig Academy—a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal. But Jaevid’s case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a peculiar interest in Jaevid’s future.

While struggling through the rigorous physical demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king’s private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder riders are willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his instructor.

Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now be put to the ultimate test.

Jaevid wants to pass his Avian year of training . . . but will he even survive it?

What kind of power is lurking inside him? After a year of training to become a dragonrider, Jaevid Broadfeather has been sent home to rest during a three-month interlude. But when he returns to find the king drake has chosen Beckah Derrick as his new rider, Jaevid realizes something big is about to happen. Every fiber of his being is pushed to the breaking point as Jaevid battles through his avian year, preparing for the final graduation test of the battle scenario. But there is more standing in his way than a few pushups and fancy sword moves. Jaevid must face a new fear as he is tormented by a gruesome nightmare of a mysterious gray elf warrior murdering the royal family of Maldobar. It seems obvious to him that this is some kind of message about how the war started long ago—until Felix assures him the king is very much alive. With his strange powers growing stronger by the day, and that violent dream replaying in his mind every night, Jaevid no longer wonders if he will pass his avian year or not—he wonders if he will even survive it.

Book Excerpt:

Balancing the books in my arm, I reached for the lock trying the combination. I’d had the same lock for five years; I had it down to basic muscle memory. A frown settled on my lips, as the first three tries were unsuccessful. “Ah come on seriously?” I muttered trying it again. “Don’t quit on me now.” Having to get another lock would just throw off the whole system. There was no way I could memorize another combination quick enough. I thought about the embarrassment of having to write it down, and having to pull out the combo for the first month and a half of school just to get my books, no thank you.

“Uh, can I ask what you’re doing breaking into my locker?” The voice made me jump. I whipped around quickly. My eyes lifted to find a boy, with a very serious and rather intimidating look on his face standing there, his emerald green eyes staring at me clearly waiting for an explanation. My words were caught in my throat as I stared in return, my own eyes wide I suspected I looked much like a deer caught in headlights which probably made me look guiltier than I actually was. He didn’t look familiar to me; I couldn’t help but focus on that. In Port Moyle, almost everyone was familiar. His nearly raven hair contrasted significantly against the serious lack of tan he was sporting, which led me to believe he was definitely not from California.

“Hello?” he added a hint of impatience in the tone and I realized now that I’d been staring at him without even uttering a simple response.

“Sorry, I um- sorry,” I said quickly, leaning against the lockers to support my weight, fighting the blush that was forming on my cheeks.

“Do you mind?” he asked and nodded to the locker and I stumbled backward allowing him access to it.

“Sorry,” I muttered again and watched as he opened it with ease. Suddenly my eyes turned to the one next to it. Yes, that was my locker and fighting the blush seemed to no longer be an option, as I felt the familiar burn of embarrassment flush my face. My eyes turned back to him and watched as he changed the books in his bag and I couldn’t help but wonder who he was.

“Do you stare at everyone like that or am I just lucky?” he asked turning his eyes to me. “Eamon Abbot,” he said offering his hand in greeting.

“Finn,” I said taking his hand.

“I know,” he said lifting my hand to show me the bracelet that held my name engraved across the surface.

“Right,” I said with a nervous laugh and he dropped my hand quickly. As I turned, I opened my own locker and quickly began switching my books. “So where are you from?” I asked turning back and I blinked, surprised to find he was already gone. Turning around again, I found myself alone in the now empty hallway and the question from my lips lingering in the air.

Book Excerpt:

“What am I looking for?” I asked almost at the exact moment I saw it.

Right at the edge of a patch of sunlight on the floor, they peeked out from behind an elegant blue sofa. So small, no wonder I missed them at first glance. A few wrinkled fingertips.

“No.” I stood there with my mouth open. “Not possible. No.”

Dessa pushed past me. “Yes, it is,” she whispered. “You see it too, don’t you? It is there.”

“But…but…” I couldn’t keep my eyes off the fingertips. “No.” Was this a normal reaction? Didn’t people faint or scream or something when they stumbled across one? Why did my mind simply refuse to believe what my eyes saw?

“It’s real!” Dessa took another step forward. “I know it is.”

It seemed such an impossible thing, but it was true. And Miss Letty had to be in her seventies. It wasn’t really that impossible.

“There’s one way to prove it!” To my astonishment, Dessa grabbed my arm and pulled me to the sofa. She gasped.

The night before, Miss Letty had been alive and feisty, and that morning she was dead. Really, truly dead. She still looked like Miss Letty, but I was distinctly aware that the thing before me was not Miss Letty anymore. Something had left. This was what it was to be dead.

Behind me, Uncle Charlie’s voice boomed. “Emmie!”

EXCERPT – Dark Siren:

The stranger shifted, leaning over until his mouth was within a millimeter of her left ear. He spoke softly, his lips brushing against some serious nerve endings, “Is this seat taken?”

With a nervous shiver, she blinked long and slow, savoring the low and sexy quality of his voice. Then she edged away to put at least an inch between his lips and her ear. If he touched her like that again, Kali was very likely to embarrass herself. Just as she was about to answer his question, the room brightened with light from the illuminated screen. What Kali saw made her jaw drop.

If an eighty-year-old grandmother had been sitting next to her when this guy had shown up, Kali would have politely asked the old lady to move so the stranger could sit down. He was absurdly good looking. Silver lighting accented every perfect line and angle of his face. Several locks from his thick mass of hair fell idly across his forehead, slightly curling at the ends. There was softness to his features that suggested he could be a keeper.

The stranger returned Kali’s stare with an intensity that took in every part of her. But his eyes never left her face.

Realizing she had been staring at him stupidly for far too long, Kali struggled to find something to say. “I’m…” She cleared her throat. “It’s yours.”

He finally looked away. Whatever tied her to him was loosed, and Kali pulled her gaze away. They didn’t speak again for a long time, but Kali was constantly aware of him. She kept stealing furtive glances in his direction because the sight of him was more enthralling than anything the movie had to offer. Growing bolder, Kali watched him from the corner of her eye at increasingly longer intervals. Apparently, the stranger was not as bothered as she was. Relaxed in his seat, he sat observing the screen with languid interest, doing a pretty good job convincing her that he’d forgotten anyone was beside him. Kali was so immersed with watching him, and was completely startled when he spoke.

“It’s not polite to stare,” he murmured softly without taking his eyes from the screen.

Kali jerked and turned away. But she wasn’t fast enough and was mortified to see the beginning of a satisfied smile appear on his face. She slid down into the chair, grateful for the darkness that concealed a blush spreading across her cheeks. From then on she tried to concentrate on the movie. But it was useless. She gave up and watched the screen absently, all the while thinking about the guy sitting next to her and how he probably thought she was an absolute dork. She didn’t get it. Boys never had this affect on her. For the past two years, it had always been them falling helplessly at her feet.

A mutated mix of human and creature launched itself from a quiet scene, growling and snarling into the camera. Several audience members jumped in surprise, and Kali was one of them. She made a noise that sounded like a strangled bird.

“Do these things frighten you?” the stranger asked. He was clearly enjoying her discomfort.

Kali cleared her throat. “Why would they? This stuff isn’t real.” This time, she didn’t look at him.

After a long moment, he spoke again. “Right,” he slowly agreed.

Author Bio:

Cynic, realist, and hopeless romantic all rolled into one, Eden was born and raised in a small, sunny town in South Carolina where thunderstorms helped inspire her best ideas. There are few things she loves more than curling up with a good book and a cup of coffee on a rainy day (except maybe chocolate cake, she loves cake), often reading into the wee hours of morning when something really grabs her. Eden enjoys reading or watching anything with supernatural elements, so writing paranormal and fantasy romance is a natural fit.

Her first novel, Dark Siren, is best described as paranormal romance artfully wrapped within a plot chock-full of action, adventure, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, while the series has evolved to become a journey of redemption and second chances as two characters understand that sometimes committing evil is necessary to protect what is loved most. Eden took the siren from Greek mythology (and borrowed a little from mermaid lore), creating an entirely different creature, with its own mythology, and one that Publisher’s Weekly praised for its passion and complexity. This is not just another werewolf/shapeshifter romance or vampire romance. This is a story that both adults and teens can enjoy, full of great characters to fall in love with!

by Adelle Yeung
Release Date: December 20th 2015

Book Summary:

Fifteen-year-old Michelle saves the world on a daily basis…with her trusty video game controller, of course! Naturally, she jumps at the chance to play an experimental virtual reality game.

The beautiful fantasy world of Starrs? Check. The power to mold matter? Check. No reset button? Wait, she didn’t sign up for this!

Turns out Starrs is really real, and to make matters worse, Michelle’s interference awakens the Cycle of the Six Moons, a series of devastating trials that will devour the universe.

Fighting the apocalypse was way easier when danger stayed on the other side of the screen, but Michelle finds a secret weapon in her new-found powers. She uses them to rescue the crown prince of a powerful magic kingdom from their sworn enemies, a technologically-advanced cult that strives to eradicate magical blood.

Michelle starts to fall for Prince Jayse, the only one who believes Michelle to be a savior rather than a curse. But not even video games could prepare her for what the cult has in store for them…

Excerpt from Chapter Five:  Damming Poison

“Mayor Rayel,” Gediyon says, “may I suggest… a healer?”

The mayor turns around and smiles.  “You follow my thoughts exactly, Gediyon.”

“Then tomorrow, I shall return to Arriscyal.”

I gasp.  “Ooh!  Can I come?”

The mayor and Gediyon exchange glances.  Gediyon says, “If that is what you wish, Michelle…”

“Pft.  Duh!  What else am I gonna do?”

I’m not sure if they understand, but they don’t deny me.

Gediyon nods to Mayor Rayel.  “Michelle and I will return as soon as possible.”

“Very well,” Mayor Rayel says.  “Then off to bed with you both.  You have a long journey ahead.”

The mayor leaves outside and Gediyon smiles at me before beckoning me up the ladder.  I think I know what he’s so excited about.

I might’ve completed my first mission, but of course there’s more to this game.  Another rank:  the healer.  I can see her already.  She’s without a doubt going to be prettier than me and she’ll have bigger boobs.  She’ll probably be soft-spoken and so perfect and sweet that I’ll want to barf every time she graces my presence.  And Gediyon is probably in love with her.

Of course he is.  He probably had to rescue her on many accounts and she won him over with her damsel-in-distress-like lifestyle.  I don’t know why this bothers me so much.  I mean, I’m a little too young for Gediyon anyway, but I have a feeling I’ll become the third wheel once she joins our party.
