Excerpt:

“Oh, man, he’s dead,” Ethan Silver said, looking like he wanted to puke. He got up and ran to the door, then out into the hallway. His shoes squeaked like noisy exclamation points as he yelled for help in a high, girly voice.

The rest of us were statues, staring at the silent form of our teacher lying belly up like a gigantic dislodged mushroom top.

“Is he really dead?” another of the popular girls asked. She huddled into a group of her friends.

I hoped Mr. Sands wasn’t dead. Death was twisted. Ugly. Death fractured a family. With missing pieces, fractions can never be made whole. I could still see the anguished face of my father, hear his final instructions as he’d gripped my arm before Death pulled him away. I clenched my teeth against the remembered hurt. My world had fallen apart. I’d walked around in shock for days, trying to handle my own pain, and yet, still be strong for Mom and my sister. Time hadn’t dulled the pain. My insides were as shredded as if I’d swallowed a porcupine, and every breath I took stabbed me from within.

“Mr. Sands isn’t dead yet.” Riley’s voice was low and impatient.

I tried to go to the teacher to see if I could help him, but Riley stopped me by grabbing my arm. Through the thickness of my sweater and shirt, the contact burned like a hot match to skin, and I didn’t like the sensation.

“Is he going to die?” I asked. I brushed Riley’s touch away. Unable to pull my attention away from the disturbing scene, I could only stare as the knots in my stomach tightened.

“Yes.”

“Why did you do that to him?” I whispered.

“He was going to kill you.”

I raised my eyes to his. “Kill me?” If that were true, Riley, my enemy, had prevented it? Confused, I said, “Why would he want to kill me?”

“I’ll explain when I come to your house later.”

My house? Why would he come to my house? This wasn’t good. I frowned as I tried to make sure I kept what I was feeling—ice-cold fear— from showing on my face. Probation Officers rarely visited the home of common Supernaturals. What was going on?

“Why do you want to come over?” I asked without thinking, not using the humbleness a Supernatural of Riley’s station called for in our world.

“Do you have something to hide?” he asked, his gaze searching my face intently. His eyes narrowed.

I was right. It was bad news. My throat ached as if I’d swallowed razor blades. I looked away, hoping to convince him. “I was curious.” I softened my tone and then held my breath, waiting for his answer, but he didn’t get a chance to respond.

Hot on the heels of Ethan, Principal Ellie Richards ran into the room. She was as thin as a praying mantis with tiny eyes that seemed to see in every direction at once. She wore her usual pencil skirt to cover her pipe cleaner legs.

Several teachers followed in her wake. They knelt down beside Mr. Sands, their voices buzzing together, bees in the educational hive.

“Call 911.”

“Ambulance should be…”

“Don’t try to move him.”

The principal checked Mr. Sands’s pulse, then stood and looked at the clock, then back at all of us. Twenty minutes remained until the final bell. Her chin bobbed when she said, “You’re all dismissed.”

Oblivious to the rumors flowing among our classmates, Riley walked toward the door of the classroom. When he neared the principal, she grabbed his arm with her abnormally long, thin fingers and spoke to him in a low, angry hiss. Her knuckles turned white, and the scraggly muscles bunched in her forearm.

Riley answered in an equally low voice, then jerked free from her grasp. She stared at the door to the hallway for a long moment after he disappeared and then swung her gaze to me.

Something reptilian flashed in her pencil thin black pupils. A hunger.

She blinked and her pupils returned to normal.

I stumbled backward a step, not understanding what I’d seen, and accidentally dropped my history book. The thick book slid across the floor, zooming in front of three seats to land at her feet. She bent and picked it up, holding on when I tried to take it from her.

“Watch out, Juliet.” Her voice, a slithering whisper, made my stomach clench. I knew she wasn’t talking about the book.

Book Excerpt:

Someone gives a feeble clap. “Magnificent! A most rousing speech to rally the heathens, Mason!”

My feet fuse to the floor at the raspy voice that wafts into the room. Tucker strains at his collar. I yank him back, my heart pounding.

A shrunken man with an unnatural stoop steps into view. My skin crawls with a new level of fear. My guns in the Crematauto, along with the rest of the weapons. I fumble around in my pocket and latch onto my switchblade. A trickle of sweat runs down behind my ears. The man standing in the entry looks freakishly old and frail. Tucker could take him down in a heartbeat, but my brain sounds an inner caution. He probably didnt come alone.

Before I even finish my thought, the doorway darkens and four armed men in black fatigues troop through. Big-shouldered, faces set like flint on necks thick as tree stumps. Schutz Clones! I tighten my grip on Tucker and command him to stay. One false move and hell end up another carcass waiting to be incinerated. He minds me, but tension radiates through his collar.

“Welcome to the Craniopolis,” the old man says. “My apologies for the modest welcoming committee, but your timing is most unfortunate. Everyone is at the unveiling of our new Hovermedes prototype.” His body shakes out a shallow breath, as he shuffles toward me. “Allow me to introduce myself. I am Dr. Lyong.”

I slide my gaze in Masons direction. His face registers confusion. Then a flicker of recognition.

“What … happened to you?” he asks, in a half-whisper.

Dr. Lyong jerks to a stop in front of me and lets out a long, trembling sigh. Its all I can do not to gag. His breath smells of decaying compost.

“Restructuring DNA proved more complex than I had hoped.” Dr. Lyong runs a finger under his beaked nose and waves it dismissively in Masons direction. The skin is stretched so tight over his hand I can see the grape-colored veins forking out beneath it. He barely looks human.

I cant repress a shudder.

Deceived (Soul Keeper Series) Review

LONE STAR LITERARY LIFE Blog Tours

L.A. Starkey’s
SOUL KEEPER SERIES

They say a soul is the immaterial essence, the animating principle, the actuating cause of an individual life.
But what if you had to share yours with the one person you hated the most?
The soul mate principle states that for every one soul there is another that will recognize its match, hence creating the perfect union.
But what if you had two soul mates, which would you choose?
What if your choices had eternal ramification?
Deceived, the debut novel in the Soul Keeper Series, is a modern day love story about the implications of having more than one soul mate, and having to choose between the two of them. The decisions of the gods has left the next generation, their heirs, torn between fate and reality, and the balance of the future hangs in anticipation of what’s to come.

My Review:

What can I say about this book? I read it in a day, that’s how amazing it was! I would definitely give this a 4.5 out of 5 star rating. I’m honestly not too big into soul-mates, but I definitely made an exception for this book. There’s so much to love about this book. To start with, the writing is amazing. The main characters are wonderful and their story unwinds with ease. There’s so many twists and turns, and one flat out surprising ending that left me needing, not just wanting, but needing to read book 2 in order to find out more. I honestly was surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. But her characters and their story just reels you in from the very first page. I simply couldn’t put the book down.

Deceived is a story about an orphan girl named Sam that has dreams about two deliciously handsome young men. She barely remembers them when she wakes up, and can barely remember what they look like. In return, Marcus and Nicholas remember her clearly, and have been sharing dreams with her for 400 years. Marcus and Nicholas are the grandson of Zeus and are immortal. They are also the children of one of the Fates along with their sister Julianna. A prophecy surrounds Sam and the children of the Fates, one that is a direct result from a very long vengeful war between Zeus and Prometheus. I don’t want to get into too much detail about the prophecy, since it’s pretty awesome and you don’t figure out all of it until the middle of the book, but lets just say it basically has to do with two boys falling in love with one girl, and one girl deciding which boy to love.

I’m also not huge into love triangles, but there’s such an awesome twist to this love triangle that I find it flat out brilliant. I cannot wait to see whom she chooses and though I thoroughly enjoyed both brothers, whom have their faults, their differences, their charms and unique personalities, I most definitely have a brother I am rooting for. I honestly wasn’t sure at first which brother I would like more, but something happens in the book (that I dare not say) that definitely seals the deal for me on which brother I prefer. But to put it plainly, both brothers are pretty awesome.

One aspect I really enjoyed with this book is how connected she feels to the brothers. It doesn’t feel like the love just bam happened. You definitely feel how the love has been building up for the brothers all this time. How they’ve gotten to know her for 400 years and how much they feel for her. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, their love for her. And as for Sam, she feels connected to them, feels drawn to them, she feels like she knows them even though she can’t remember and its very believable that she could love these young men though she barely really knows them in the story. Deep down, she has know them herself for 400 years even in past lives. I actually don’t particularly like books about reincarnation either, but for this particular story I think it adds a wonderful element to the story. Plus, there’s just so much to love about this book.

Deceived is poetic, and lyrical. It’s breathtaking, and heartbreaking. It’s a read you don’t want to miss.

This book is a modern day Greek Mythological story. If you like books based off Greek Mythology, love triangles, mystery, twists and turns around every corner, and emotional rides, then I highly recommend this read.

Chapter One Excerpt:

There was no moving in this moment. Her body afforded her no such luxury, as swirling white mist covered the soft green grass, giving the world an ethereal appearance. Crimson danced against the golden sky as the evening moved in quickly, hoping to make way for its dark lover.

Sam gazed around her, trying to make sense of the familiarity she felt with her setting, but she failed to hold onto the fleeting memory. The soft crunch of grass moving changed everything as realization dawned—she was no longer alone.

Her dark sapphire eyes narrowed, brow creasing as a figure cut through the dense, chalky air. He towered over her by a head or two, and judging by the large expanse of his shoulders, he often left the gym stained in his scent. As his shape continued to gain clarity, from color and size to the defined lines of a life well lived, the swell of anticipation grew within her at the story his facial features might tell.

As he drew close enough for focus, her jaw slackened and her eyes widened with wonder. He was for all intents and purposes a teenager, and yet by his exotic appearance, she guessed him to be a foreigner. Wherever he was from, he was simply beautiful.

He stopped just before her, his gaze locked on hers, and try though she may words escaped her cry for assistance. His piercing jade eyes bore into her, dark orange rays stretching lazily from the iris, his skin seeming to glitter as if kissed by the sun.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

“For me?” Sam blinked in surprise, taking a hesitant step back.

“Ah, Samantha,” he breathed out, his brow creasing ever so slightly. “Same questions every time, my love. Shall I give you the same answers?”

“W-what a-answers?” She shook her head, attempting to draw in a breath that wasn’t filled with the smell of pure male.

There would be no relaxing in front of him for something was so very familiar and yet alarming to all of her protective senses. Brick by brick, her heart constructed a thick wall that would promise protection. He took a step forward and reached for her hand, but was a bit too late to infiltrate her senses as the wall was up and impenetrable.

She exhaled softly as their skin connected and instinctively let her fingers wrap around his as a sign of friendship. The warmth of his touch sent tingles racing along the corridors of her body and yet still the cold loneliness remained because she demanded it so. No one would ever penetrate her defenses again. Self-preservation had become her lifelong companion simply because life required such company.

New York Times bestseller James Lee Burke returns with his latest masterpiece, the story of a father and son separated by war and circumstance—and whose encounter with the legendary Holy Grail will change their lives forever.

From its opening scene in revolutionary Mexico to the Battle of the Marne in 1918, and on to the bordellos and saloons of San Antonio during the reign of the Hole in the Wall Gang, House of the Rising Sun is an epic tale of love, loss, betrayal, vengeance, and retribution that follows Texas Ranger Hackberry Holland on his journey to reunite with his estranged son, Ishmael, a captain in the United States Army.

After a violent encounter that leaves four Mexican soldiers dead, Hackberry escapes the country in possession of a stolen artifact, earning the ire of a bloodthirsty Austrian arms dealer who then places Hack’s son Ishmael squarely in the cross hairs of a plot to recapture his prize, believed to be the mythic cup of Christ.

Along the way, we meet three extraordinary women: Ruby Dansen, the Danish immigrant who is Ishmael’s mother and Hackberry’s one true love; Beatrice DeMolay, a brothel madam descended from the crusader knight who brought the shroud of Turin back from the Holy Land; and Maggie Bassett, one-time lover of the Sundance Kid, whose wiles rival those of Lady Macbeth. In her own way, each woman will aid Hackberry in his quest to reconcile with Ishmael, to vanquish their enemies, and to return the Grail to its rightful place.

House of the Rising Sun is James Lee Burke’s finest novel to date, and a thrilling entry into the Holland family saga that continued most recently with Wayfaring Stranger, which The New York Times Book Review described as “saturated with the romance of the past while mournfully attuned to the unholy menace of the present.”

Mayan Blood Character Interview and Giveaway

 Mayan Blood (Stone Legacy #1)
by Theresa DaLayne
Release Date: December 29th 2015
Limitless Publishing

Summary from Goodreads:

Their empires have fallen, but their mythology lives on…

Zanya Coreandero is a seventeen-year-old orphan with only a single friend and no hope for a normal life. Diagnosed with anxiety and night terrors, no one believes her cuts and bruises are a result of an evil entity, and not a brutal case of self-harm.

With the only home she’s ever known being the isolated institution—where breakfast is a handful of medications, the psychiatry sessions are mandatory, and her every move is watched—the only relief is her red-haired roommate named Tara, who’s more like a little sister than her best friend.

Free will is strong, but destiny is stronger.

When Zanya is kidnapped, she meets a group of gifted Mayan descendants, each with a unique ability. Gone from a nameless castaway to the only hope of mankind, Zanya is forced to make a grueling decision: bond with an enchanted stone and save humanity from rising underworld forces, or watch helplessly as Earth falls victim to a familiar dark deity from her dreams. This time, he’s playing for keeps.

A wicked secret hides behind a handsome face…

When Arwan, a dark-eyed timebender, takes interest in Zanya’s mission, it’s unclear if his intention is to help, or if he’s on a hell-bent mission for revenge. Wary of falling for another guy with major secrets and a tainted past, Zanya fights to keep her distance. If only her heart gave her a choice.

Character interview with Thresa DaLayne

Character Name: Arwan

Character Bio:

Orphan and gifted Riyata, Arwan grew up at Renato’s estate in Belize after his mother was murdered by an underworld enemy. For years he has denied his Mayan ancestry and shunned his bloodline. Now that Zanya—the Stone Guardian—is back and bonded with her stone, he must face the darkest part of his soul in order to find the revenge he continues to seek.

I don’t have a photo of Arwan, nor do I want to assign one. He is a unique looking twenty-something year old with tan skin, dark eyes, sharp cheekbones, long-ish dark hair, and a keen talent for martial arts. He also has a very rare ability called timebending, which he does not often use in fear of changing the course of history and affecting the future in negative ways that he cannot undo.

If you can add a dreamcast pic of the character that would be awesomeJ

Me: Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

Arwan:

Focus. Normally that would be a good quality, but I tend to be overly focused on a goal and do not stop perusing it until I’ve accomplished it.  Maybe that’s how I earned Zanya’s affections. Once I knew I wanted her, I couldn’t stop until I made my best effort to earn her trust.

Me: Have you?

Arwan: It’s a work in process.

Me: Do you think you deserve her trust?

Arwan: No. Not in the least.

Me: Why?

Arwan: Can we move to the next question please?

Me: Why?

Arwan: Because I’m not entirely comfortable telling you something I haven’t told her first.

Me: Fair enough. What about your best quality?

Arwan: I would say patience. I need patience while training—especially with Peter due to is lack of practice. He spends far too much time with Tara and not enough time in the dojo.

Me: It sounds like you’re angry with him.

Arwan: Angry? No, I’m not angry. Just…concerned. I don’t want him to fall behind. But knowing Zanya now, I can’t blame him for being hesitant to leave Tara. It’s hard to be away from the person you care about.

Me: What are you most afraid of?

Arwan: Failure. I’ve worked my entire life to prepare for the moment I can finally avenge my mother’s death. Plus, now I have more than just myself to protect. There’s no one else to lead the rest of the group, and I have to be there. It’s my job, and I can’t fail.

Me: What do you want more than anything?

Arwan. Peace.

Me: What kind? There are a lot of kinds of peace.

Arwan: All kinds. For too many years I’ve struggled to achieve inner peace, but that’s not possible because of who…what, I am. Maybe someday I can find a balance. That’s about the best I can hope for.

Me: What is your relationship status?

Arwan: It’s…complicated.

Me: You’re not going to improvise, are you?

Arwan: No, I’m not.

Me: Okay then. How much of a rebel are you?

Arwan: I think that’s more of a question for Jayden. Me? I prefer structure. Though I suppose Renato wouldn’t completely agree with the current events.

Me: What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?

Arwan: Taking control of my darker side. Commanding it. That is by far my greatest achievement to date.

Me: What is your current state of mind?

Arwan: I’m nervous.

Me: Why?

Arwan: Because I’m not used to people probing into my personal life. Into my head. Marzena, the young dreamwalker, gives me space. She doesn’t intrude into my thoughts. This interview feels a lot like when she reaches into my head.

Me: What is your most treasured possession?

Arwan: Does it have to be an object?

Me: Yes.

Arwan: My glaive.

Me: What’s that?

Arwan: It’s a weapon I use in both training and fighting—a spear with a long, curved blade at the end.

Me: You don’t have anything more personal you cherish?

Arwan: I don’t have many personal items. I’ve never needed them. I live with Renato, have the dojo at my disposal, and the jungle as my refuge.

Me: Which living person do you, most despise?

Arwan: I suppose it would be wrong to say Jayden. *grins *

Me: I don’t think Zanya would be thrilled to hear you say that.

Arwan: No, she wouldn’t. And in reality it’s not the truth.

Me: So who is it?

Arwan: Sarian—and my father. Both of them equally and as fiercely. The end.

Me: What is your greatest regret?

Arwan: Existing.

Me: Why?

Arwan: I’d rather not elaborate. Are we almost finished?

Me: Yes, we are. Lets change things up. What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Arwan: Stubbornness and self-confidence.

Me: Most men dislike a stubborn woman.

Arwan: Not me. It tells me she knows what she wants. I like that.

Me: Which living person do you most admire?

Arwan: My mentor, Renato. He is like my father, and I have great respect for him.

Me: What is your motto?

Arwan: You always have a choice.

Me: We’re all finished up. Once again, Arwan, thank you for the interview.

Arwan: Great. Thank you.

About the Author

Theresa DaLayne is a north-south-east-western kind of girl with a quirky personality to match her nomad life. Born in California, she migrated to three different cities in Washington State, a tiny island in Alaska, North Carolina, and finally to the suburbs of Ohio where she currently lives with her husband, three kids, vegetarian cat, and her ungrateful fish.

Always on the lookout for a new story, Theresa is a shameless eavesdropper and will take anyone who provides inspiration and mold them into a character without a second thought. She enjoys writing both paranormal and contemporary stories, considering her mind wanders between worlds of fantasy while she’s forced to live in the real world, very much against her will.

Can anyone survive being lost in Luntharda?

No amount of training has prepared Jaevid Broadfeather for the frontlines of battle. Now facing the true horrors of war, with Luntharda looming on the horizon, Jaevid has begun to question everything he thought about his heritage. The only thing keeping him going is his oath to protect his dragonrider brothers. But in an instant, even that slips through Jaevid’s fingers as he steps from the safety of his dragon’s saddle into the depths of his mother’s wild homeland—the kingdom of the gray elves.

Stranded in Luntharda with his partner, Lieutenant Jace Rordin, Jaevid must finally confront the demons of his own past as he uncovers the truth about a war that began before he was ever born. Armed with a new appreciation for destiny, and flanked by his trusted friends, Jaevid moves to make the final strike against an enemy that has hidden in plain sight for far too long.

One kingdom’s traitor will become the world’s last hope.

Fledgling NEW 1800x2700

When Jaevid Broadfeather is given the rare opportunity to become a dragonrider for the king’s army, the 15-year-old boy has no idea that he is part of a conspiracy that will rock the very foundations of the kingdom.

Jaevid Broadfeather has grown up as a wartime refugee, hiding from the world because of his mixed racial heritage. He feels his future is hopeless, until a chance encounter with a wild dragon lands him in Blybrig Academy—a place usually forbidden to anyone but the rich and royal. But Jaevid’s case is special; no dragon has voluntarily chosen a rider in decades, so the proud riders of Blybrig must begrudgingly let him join their brotherhood despite his bloodline. Lieutenant Sile Derrick, a sternly tempered man with a mysterious past, becomes his instructor and immediately takes a peculiar interest in Jaevid’s future.

While struggling through the rigorous physical demands of training, things begin to go awry. Jaevid witnesses the king’s private guards kidnapping Sile in the dead of night. When none of the elder riders are willing to help him, Jaevid begins a dangerous adventure to save his instructor.

Everything Jaevid learned at the academy will now be put to the ultimate test.

Avian NEW 1800x2700

Jaevid wants to pass his Avian year of training . . . but will he even survive it?

What kind of power is lurking inside him? After a year of training to become a dragonrider, Jaevid Broadfeather has been sent home to rest during a three-month interlude. But when he returns to find the king drake has chosen Beckah Derrick as his new rider, Jaevid realizes something big is about to happen. Every fiber of his being is pushed to the breaking point as Jaevid battles through his avian year, preparing for the final graduation test of the battle scenario. But there is more standing in his way than a few pushups and fancy sword moves. Jaevid must face a new fear as he is tormented by a gruesome nightmare of a mysterious gray elf warrior murdering the royal family of Maldobar. It seems obvious to him that this is some kind of message about how the war started long ago—until Felix assures him the king is very much alive. With his strange powers growing stronger by the day, and that violent dream replaying in his mind every night, Jaevid no longer wonders if he will pass his avian year or not—he wonders if he will even survive it.

The truth will soon be set loose.

Book Excerpt:

Balancing the books in my arm, I reached for the lock trying the combination. I’d had the same lock for five years; I had it down to basic muscle memory. A frown settled on my lips, as the first three tries were unsuccessful. “Ah come on seriously?” I muttered trying it again. “Don’t quit on me now.” Having to get another lock would just throw off the whole system. There was no way I could memorize another combination quick enough. I thought about the embarrassment of having to write it down, and having to pull out the combo for the first month and a half of school just to get my books, no thank you.

“Uh, can I ask what you’re doing breaking into my locker?” The voice made me jump. I whipped around quickly. My eyes lifted to find a boy, with a very serious and rather intimidating look on his face standing there, his emerald green eyes staring at me clearly waiting for an explanation. My words were caught in my throat as I stared in return, my own eyes wide I suspected I looked much like a deer caught in headlights which probably made me look guiltier than I actually was. He didn’t look familiar to me; I couldn’t help but focus on that. In Port Moyle, almost everyone was familiar. His nearly raven hair contrasted significantly against the serious lack of tan he was sporting, which led me to believe he was definitely not from California.

“Hello?” he added a hint of impatience in the tone and I realized now that I’d been staring at him without even uttering a simple response.

“Sorry, I um- sorry,” I said quickly, leaning against the lockers to support my weight, fighting the blush that was forming on my cheeks.

“Do you mind?” he asked and nodded to the locker and I stumbled backward allowing him access to it.

“Sorry,” I muttered again and watched as he opened it with ease. Suddenly my eyes turned to the one next to it. Yes, that was my locker and fighting the blush seemed to no longer be an option, as I felt the familiar burn of embarrassment flush my face. My eyes turned back to him and watched as he changed the books in his bag and I couldn’t help but wonder who he was.

“Do you stare at everyone like that or am I just lucky?” he asked turning his eyes to me. “Eamon Abbot,” he said offering his hand in greeting.

“Finn,” I said taking his hand.

“I know,” he said lifting my hand to show me the bracelet that held my name engraved across the surface.

“Right,” I said with a nervous laugh and he dropped my hand quickly. As I turned, I opened my own locker and quickly began switching my books. “So where are you from?” I asked turning back and I blinked, surprised to find he was already gone. Turning around again, I found myself alone in the now empty hallway and the question from my lips lingering in the air.

I am an Irish-Canadian Young Adult author who was born in Winnipeg, Canada (yes, it really does exist). I love my city and love even more that it’s become Hollywood’s running joke (Don’t believe me? Just check out Youtube).

I have always been a writer, from poems in my Grade 6 diary (Ode to Hobbits), to short stories in the back of my math’s book. I have always loved to create stories and find myself constantly creating new characters.

I am a dedicated Fangirl of many proportions and I have a knack for getting expressions all wrong and saying incredibly stupid, but often hilarious things (My graduation gift from my friends was a book of my own quotes).

I am a proud alumna of St. Mary’s Academy, an all-girls Catholic prep school and I studied Theatre and Film at the University of Winnipeg. Currently, I am still hanging out in Winnipeg.
