Publisher: Rebelight Publishing

Book Summary (Goodreads):

Fitting into a new school in a new city isn’t easy, but dreams come true for Sera with a gift from her parents: a gorgeous and spirited American Paint horse. Sera’s bubble bursts when a mean girl, Brittany, tells her that neither she nor her less than well-trained horse belong with the rest of the “reiners” in their riding class. As Sera sets out to prove Brittany wrong, she risks losing her passion for training and the friendship of Dev, another girl who truly understands her.

An earlier version of this story was originally published by Stabenfeldt (Stavanger, Norway) in 2011 as Wager the Wonder Horse and distributed in six languages: Norwegian, Hungarian, Czech, German, Finnish and Swedish.

Book Excerpt:

As we walk our horses toward the arena door, I see Brittany watching us, and she doesn’t look happy. Talk about jealous! As usual, her mare flattens her ears at Wager. That mare might benefit from Mom and Dad’s lecture on actions and reactions.

“Dani,” Brittany calls, “have you seen some of the other things Wager can do?”

“What do you mean?” Dani asks.

“Yeah, what do you mean?” I echo.

“He’s a good looking horse,” she says. “Flashy.”

She looks at me, as if expecting me to say something. Like what? I’m way too surprised.

“Since they’re going to be at the winter show anyway, why don’t they enter a showmanship class?”

Dani cocks her head to the side. “I wonder,” she says. “Sera, what do you think?”

I’ve watched showmanship classes in Calgary. It wouldn’t be like our lesson. Wager would have to be groomed to look like a million bucks—not a problem for my boy—and must respond instantly to my cues to walk, trot or halt. He’d also have to stand still for very long periods of time.

“Honestly? I don’t think he’s patient enough.”

“Well let’s see,” she says. “Go ahead and walk a small circle with him.”

I feel like today’s lesson has been three-in-one! We walk, trot, stop, and start and backup on Dani’s cues. Finally she calls us in. “I think you’ll do fine if you’d like to try it,” she says. “Good idea, Brittany.”

“No problem,” Brittany says, and I see a strange glint in her eyes. “Wager’s a good boy.” She looks at him. “Aren’t you. Wager? Such a good boy!”

I’m so busy thinking about the show that I don’t notice how closely Wager is listening to Brittany. I catch on just in time to watch Wager offer a vigorous “yes” head-bob, which unfortunately catches Dani’s chin on the upswing.

“Son of a gun!” she shouts after a sharp cry of pain. She’s holding her chin, but manages to look at me and spit out, “What is that?”

“A trick,” I say, my voice small.

She shakes her head. “Bad idea, Sera. Does he always do that when someone tells him he’s a good boy?”

“Pretty much,” I say. “You have to be looking at him.”

“And what if a showmanship judge tells him the same thing?” She lets go of her jaw and gives her head a roll, as if to work out the kinks, and I get the sense she’s not really waiting for me to answer. Her chin is red where Wager whacked her. “I’m not confident that we can train that out of him in one week. Stick to reining this time around, Sera. We’ll work on showmanship another time.” She turns and—muttering the whole way—leads Spike out of the arena.

“Why did you do that, Brittany?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she says, smirking. “Clearly, Wager is a special boy, but that doesn’t mean he can be good at everything.” She sniffs. “You don’t have to show him, you know. He’s a nice riding horse. Why don’t you stick with that?”

My heart and every bit of happy I had in me drops to the arena floor. I don’t know what I did to turn Brittany against us, but it’s pretty clear she doesn’t want us in her world.

We’ll show her, Wager. We’ve got to.

I stroke Wager’s nose. Brittany’s right about one thing. He is a nice riding horse. We used to have so much fun together. When exactly did riding stop being fun?

Dorianna

Dorianna
by Catherine Stin
Publisher: Evernight Teen
Release Date: November 7, 2014
4.5/5 Stars

Book Summary (Goodreads):

Internet followers, beauty, power. It all sounded good.

Until it transformed into a terrifying reality Dorianna couldn’t stop.

Dorianna is a dark twist for the Internet generation on A Picture of Dorian Gray.

When her father is jailed, her mother ships lonely, plain Dorianna to her aunt’s. There, Dorianna yearns to build a new identity, but the popular Lacey bullies her—mostly for getting attention from her ex, Ander.

Ander takes Dorianna to Coney Island where Wilson, a videographer, creates a stunning compilation of her. She dreams of being an online sensation, as she’s never even had a birthday party, and vows she’d give anything to go viral. Wilson claims he’s the Prince of Darkness and warns her the pledge has downsides.

Dorianna thinks he’s joking. She has no idea of how dire the consequences might be.

My Review:

What would you do for good looks, charming personality, popularity, social status, friends, and a certain amount of power that you’ve never had before? Have you ever been so lonely that you’ve wanted nothing more than to be accepted, included, beautiful, and cherished? That’s exactly what Dorianna Gilliam wanted…

Dorianna by Catherine Stine is a take on the story of Dorian Gray. Stine’s rendition of the tale is a horrifying, dark, and twisted story of a girl that is willing to pay the ultimate price for good looks and immortality. The story begins with Dorianna Gilliam looking plain, simple, buck-toothed, and pretty much disliked by everyone at school. When her father is imprisoned, her mother decides to send Dorianna across the country to live with her aunt on Coney Island. Dorianna learns quickly that this teenage society is pretty much the same as her last. Dorianna at this point is lonely and isolated, and believes her world will always be this way. But what if someone offered a way out from this desolate life Dorianna lives? It just so happens that she meets a boy named Ander whom is charming and wonderful. His friend Wilson takes to Dorianna instantly and decides he wants to give her a makeover. This makeover is exactly what Dorianna believes she needs… or is it? Wilson wants to transform Dorianna, but not for free. This make cover comes with a steep price. Needless to say, Dorianna gets the make over, and spends the rest of the book paying the price. As Dorianna continues down the dark path she’s on, she gathers “followers”, throws parties for her friends, and as she turns darker and darker a beast within her grows hungrier and hungrier for the misdeeds she does, and whispers and encourages her as she sets herself down a cruel and self-destructive path. This beast pushes her until her story meets an epic conclusion that is intense and terrifying. And I’m sure you’re wondering, is there redemption for Dorianna after all the horrible things she’s done? You will have to read the book and find out if there’s hope for Dorianna after all!

There’s so much to love about Dorianna, and trust me, it’s a very dark ride! Even though it’s based on an older tale, it’s very a creative and unique story and very much holds its own. I love the modern twist of the story and I think Stine crafted it wonderfully to fit into today’s society. I also enjoy reads about characters that either are dark and become good or are decent people and become their own worse enemies. To me it’s fascinating to see that transformation over time. Dorianna is so intense, has an incredible story ARC and has an epic climax. It’s darkly enchanting, and you feel helpless as you read Dorianna’s story and watch her spiral into that darkness.

If you like dark, horrifying and twisted tales, then I highly recommend this read! It’s beautifully dark and wickedly captivating!

Exclusive Excerpt: Friend or Foe?

A shrill shrieking erupts from the barn, thickening my blood with fear. Animals screaming for mercy.

In his haste, Jonesy has left the barn door open, allowing the noise to escape onto the night air. Brighton steps in the doorway, slamming it shut, muting the sound of their pain.

I slide the cats from my lap, fighting to control my rapid breath as I slink toward the window. Was Marietta right? I don’t want to know. I don’t want to know.

“You must.”

I move slowly toward the barn, and the world seems to slow as I swallow hard.

I drag my hands up the bumpy fieldstone to grasp the windowsill and stand on tip-toes to peer inside. Two large balls, attached to rods, sit on a wooden table, ridiculously reminding me of metallic dandelions.

However to blow on one of these might mean an electrified-death. Bolts of light leap between the two heads, dancing back and forth, green and red, green and red, as if Brighton somehow captured the lightning from the night sky.

-Brynn Chapman, The Violet Hour (Kindle Locations 788-797).

After that excerpt I can’t help but ask what you think about Brighton. Is Brighton a good guy? Or is he a villain?

The Inspiration for Opening the Veil.

opening the veil1

A Message From the Author:

Thank you for allowing me to guest post on your blog today.

I am often asked where inspiration for my stories and books come from. Actually, it usually comes out more along the lines of “Dang! What is going on in your head? Do you really think of that stuff all on your own?” Then come the sideways glances and questioning looks once I explain that not only do I come up with all of the things I write, but there are even stranger things floating around in my noggin that never make it to paper. To be fair, these concerned looks and comments usually come after people read my short stories that are more in the Twilight Zone vein. Most people who read my New Sight Series, especially if they are “cat people” like me, smile and start telling me about their own cat’s antics. I think I prefer that reaction, mainly because the conversations tend to last longer and those people don’t go out of their way to avoid standing near me.

The inspiration for Opening the Veil, and all of the books that will follow, started with my own cat Ali”i. Ali’i means queen in Hawaiian and I admit that was probably not the best name choice for my cat because she lives up to that every single day – in spades. All of the vocalizations of Allie in the books are actual sounds that my beloved cat makes to me on a daily basis. Although she is very vocal, even to the point of chewing me out at times, she sadly does not talk to me in my head. Where the book idea originated was with her flipping out every time I took a shower for the first year or so of her life. I have no idea why she couldn’t handle me in the shower and my speculation turned into the premise of the relationship between Cassie and Allie in my book series.

As for the ghost part, well, let’s just say I have had more than one occurrence with the unknown. There are certain aspects of Cassie’s new life that resonate with my own experiences and I thought others might be interested to read about them. Come on, who hasn’t enjoyed a good ghost story around a campfire or darkened room with friends?

I have to say one of my personal favorite things since writing this book has been the fans that have emailed me, passing along their own cat stories or personal experiences with spirits and the unknown. It’s great being able to connect with other people whom I might never have had the opportunity had I not put my story out there. I hope that you check out my book Opening the Veil and pass along your thoughts or experiences, too.

When asked about where her story ideas come from, she usually smiles mischievously and remarks, “My fingers have a mind of their own.” Often found peeking under rocks, wandering through graveyards, and poking her nose into abandoned haunted houses, she has a particular love for black cats, breaking mirrors, and running with scissors.

In The Time Of Dragon Moon Teaser

22504696

In the Time of Dragon Moon (Wilde Island Chronicles #3)

by Janet Lee Carey (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

An epic fantasy about dragons, dark secrets, Pendragons, and magic

On the southernmost tip of Wilde Island–far from the Dragonswood sanctuary and the Pendragon Castle–live the native Euit people. Uma, who is half Euit and half English, and not fully accepted by her tribe, wants to become a healer like her Euit father. But the mad English queen in the north, desperate for another child, kidnaps Uma and her father and demands that he cure her barrenness. After her father dies, Uma must ensure that the queen is with child by the time of the Dragon Moon, or be burned at the stake.
Terrified and alone, Uma reaches out to her only possible ally: the king’s nephew Jackrun, a fiery dragonrider with dragon, fairy, and human blood. Together, they must navigate through a sea of untold secrets, unveil a dark plot spawned long ago in Dragonswood, and find a way to accept all the elements–Euit, English, dragon, and fairy–that make them who they are.

Excerpt:

Jackrun’s eyes fell on my double-belted waist. I’d put on Father’s belt–missing Mother, missing Father, feeling alone on this strange new island full of English—and forgotten to take it off.

“If you have been given this power,” I said, “why hide it?”

Jackrun began pacing the bluff, keeping his path small, as if the grass caged him. “Just give me your promise.”

Never trust the English, Father said. I could not make promises so easily anymore. I needed to gather information as sure coin to use if I needed it. “I know some warriors in my tribe who would love to have such power.”

He barked a short, bitter laugh. “You don’t know what you’re saying, Uma.” His feet moved, his arms, his hands. “I have to get back,” he added, glancing toward the castle.

“And I have firewood to gather,” I said. You are the fox. They are the hounds. You must learn to survive.

“I’ll give you a hand,” he said. We headed down the hill. Summer stars winked above, a treasury of diamonds. On the beach I slipped off my shoes and felt the sand between my toes as Jackrun rolled up his sleeves, fell to his knees, and dug a hole with his bare hands to bury the dead bird he’d burned. When he was done, he patted the small mound with care as if he were tucking in a child.

He stood tall again, brushing off his hands. Green dragon scales covered his right forearm, each diamond-shaped scale the size of a coin. “I nearly burned Desmond tonight over that,” he said, looking down at his scaly arm. “Not my scales, but my sister’s. He insulted Tabitha. He called her neck scales repulsive. He said it in the middle of the feast, loud enough for everyone to hear. Tabby ran from the table in tears.” He swiped a hand through his hair, a swift, hard pass as a man skins an animal with a sharp blade. “He’s the same callus bastard he’s always been.”

I tasted the words callus bastard, liking the sound. The callus bastard had shed the blood of my people, the callus bastard whipped me and my father, the callus bastard slobbered on my neck, reached up the front of my dress.

Jackrun was on the move again, this time walking to the shore. Water hissed up to our feet, touched his boots and my bare toes. I pointed across the sea at the dragon flying under the stars, black as a torn piece of night. It might be Jackrun’s dragon, Babak, or Lord Kahlil. Too far away to tell. Dragons combine earth, wind, and fire in their bodies. They have a power like the sun. Jackrun had this same life force in him.
“You are the only one who can do what they do with fire.”

Jackrun’s mouth tightened. He hooked his thumb around the jeweled dagger at his belt. “You don’t understand. It’s dangerous. I’m dangerous.”

“You didn’t harm Prince Desmond tonight,” I said. “You ran outside before you burned him.”

“He deserved to burn.” His body was rigid. He glared down at me. I kept his gaze.

“Yes. He does.” Had I spoken the words out loud? For a moment his fire had released me.

“Uma Quarteney.” Jackrun’s gaze softened. Then he crouched to fill his hands with seawater and rinse his face. Water ran down his cheeks and chin, his wrists and arm scales. He looked calmer when he stood again. “You remind me of someone,” he said. “Someone I lost years ago.”

I waited for him to explain, taking in his thoughtful mouth, the weight of sorrow around it. But he never told me who he was thinking of. We circled the beach, gathering firewood.

Excerpt:

I should have tossed out a welcoming smile and a “Nice to meet you. Gotta run,” but the strong outline of his back did nothing to prepare me for the siren song of his front. Melancholy practically poured off him, nearly visible, yet transient as smoke. His tousled brown hair, square-ish face, Johnny Depp lips and intense brown eyes nearly knocked me backwards. In that brief instant of eye contact, I felt the disorienting fuzziness that comes between sleep and wakefulness. Tiny flecks of autumn amber sparkled in his eyes, beckoning me deeper. My lips parted, as if not under my control, and prepared to utter some sort of greeting but stopped. I noticed the slightest twinge in my brain.

Strange but not unpleasant, it felt like a warm breeze had just blown away a cobweb from my mind. Jarred by all these things happening in an instant, I turned away. Even so, I could feel his eyes on me as I fled. It made the entire length of my spine tingle.

Nineteen minutes to say goodbye to the world they knew, forever, and to prepare for a new Earth, a new Sun.

Generations after solar storms have destroyed nearly all human technology on Earth and humans have reverted to a middle ages like existence, all knowledge of the remaining technology is kept hidden by a privileged few called the Reticents and books are burned as heresy.

But when Alana is chosen against her will to be the Vessel, the living repository for all human knowledge, she must find the strength to be what the world needs.

“Kinder?”

He stopped what he was doing and looked at me hard, searching my scarred face.

“Do I know you?” He demanded, grabbing my wrist.

It was him, no doubt, but what was he dressed as a Reticent for? Too late, I realized my mistake. He was one of them. I tried to pull away, but his bony fingers had a better grip on me than I thought and he wouldn’t let me go.

“Recks?” he asked in a hushed, angry voice, as if he didn’t want the others to hear.

I twisted my arm, squirming out of his grasp and pinching the horses flank to make him balk. Kinder released me to keep from tumbling off the prancing stallion. I ran without looking back, sloshing water all over my pants from the jug I carried. I almost threw it down, but we needed the water.

I made up my mind to tell Recks it was time to leave the city. Now. Today. It wasn’t safe. Not with so many Reticents here and especially not with Kinder being one of them. What other lies had he told Recks? I couldn’t even think about it now. My breath cam in panicked gasps as I ran to the hidden apartment.

ABOUT LISA T. CRESSWELL:

Lisa T. Cresswell

Lisa, like most writers, began scribbling silly notes, stories, and poems at a very young age. Born in North Carolina, the South proved fertile ground to her imagination with its beautiful white sand beaches and red earth. In fifth grade, she wrote, directed and starred in a play “The Queen of the Nile” at school, despite the fact that she is decidedly un-Egyptian looking. Perhaps that’s why she went on to become a real life archaeologist?

Unexpectedly transplanted to Idaho as a teenager, Lisa learned to love the desert and the wide open skies out West. This is where her interest in cultures, both ancient and living, really took root, and she became a Great Basin archaeologist. However, the itch to write never did leave for long. Her first books became the middle grade fantasy trilogy, The Storyteller Series. Her first traditionally published work, Hush Puppy, is now available from Featherweight Press.

Lisa still lives in Idaho with her family and a menagerie of furry critters that includes way too many llamas!
