Invaded Release Week Blitz

I am so thrilled to help Melissa Landers with her release week launch party for INVADED! See a note from Melissa below and make sure to enter the giveaway!

Hey, fiction lovers. I’m Melissa Landers, author of the Alienated series (YA sci-fi from Disney-Hyperion), and today I’m bouncing with excitement because THE SEQUEL IS FINALLY HERE!

It’s been a year since we left Aelyx and Cara onboard the intergalactic transport, and INVADED begins with an emotional goodbye as they part ways—Aelyx returning to Earth to salvage the alliance, and Cara continuing to L’eihr to serve out her part of the student exchange. While they’re apart, our star-crossed lovers will face assassination attempts, betrayal, crippling self-doubt, and a sadistic alien Phys Ed class. (Because there’s no escaping PE, even in another galaxy.) When Aelyx and Cara finally reunite…well, let’s just say it’s combustive. 😉

What do reviewers think? I’m glad you asked!

“Readers will love the seamless blend of suspense, humor, and romance set against an interstellar landscape. Dual narratives and a tightly plotted mystery keep the suspense running high, and the chemistry between Aelyx and Cara smolders.” –Booklist

“Excellent character development and integration between modern reality and science fiction. Teens will be rooting for the galactic couple while enjoying the action and suspense that runs through the two volumes.” –School Library Journal

“The protagonists’ forced separation gives greater depth to their romance. Each learns to turn a critical eye upon the flaws of their native societies while confronting genuine obstacles to a future together. These complications only underscore the growing sense of menace that propels the narrative to an action-packed climax.” –Kirkus

I hope you’ll make tracks to the nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of INVADED! If you’re snowed in, here are some easy links to bring the sequel right to you:

Through the Reflection Pond
Original Composition by Rebecca Castillo
Inspired by the novel Reflection Pond by Kacey Vanderkarr

I fell through the reflection pond
It brought me closer to you
I fell through the reflection pond
It gave me a family to love

Darkness surrounds you, every where you go
Let me light the lonely path you’re on
I will guide you, if you want me to
Your soul is so black, let me bring you back

I fell through the image of you
Feathered warrior, wings dark as night
I fell through the darkness of you
Tell me, do you feel my light?

Darkness surrounds you, every where you go
Let me light the lonely path you’re on
I will guide you, if you want me to
Your soul is so black, let me bring you back

I fell through the reflection pond
It brought me closer to you

Reflection Pond, with it’s secrets
Only you are true to me
Reflection Pond, with its darkness
Don’t you really see?
That the light inside of you grows brighter each and every day?

I fell through the reflection pond
It brought me closer to you
I fell through the darkness of you
My true warrior, gentle as a dove

Darkness surrounds you, every where you go
Let me light the lonely path you’re on
I will guide you, if you want me to
Your soul is so black, let me bring you back

I fell through the reflection pond
It brought me closer to you
I fell through the beauty of you
It brought me closer to you

If you can handle my awful guitar playing and terrible recording listen to it here! 🙂

Better recordings to come!

Book Summary (Goodreads):

Callie knows a lot more about pain than she does about family. She’s never belonged, at least, not until she falls through a portal into her true home. The beautiful faerie city of Eirensae doesn’t come free. Callie must find her amulet and bind herself to the city, and most importantly, avoid the Fallen fae who seek her life. Seems like a small price to pay for the family she’s always wanted.

Then she meets cynical and gorgeous Rowan, who reads the darkness of her past in her eyes. He becomes Callie’s part-time protector and full-time pain in the ass. He has secrets of his own for Callie to unravel. What they don’t know is that the future of Eirensae lies with them, and the once peaceful city is about to become a battleground for power.

Book Excerpt:

Just when it appeared the knights would reach their goal at the north end of the invaders, the ground beneath them trembled, and suddenly a gigantic, fiery creature burst from the ground. At the end of its long, muscular arms, were claws hands nearly a pace in length. On its head were four curved horns, two thrusting outward on each side. As the creature crawled from the ground, it stood more than ten paces tall. Rearing back its head, it released a piercing scream which struck fear in the hearts of both man and beast. The horses around the creature bolted in terror, making it almost impossible for the master horsemen atop them to remain in the saddle. “By the gods, what is that?” one of the mages whispered. “That has nothing to do with the gods,” Estinshaw explained. “That is a demon, brought forth by Travendar himself.”

Rowan: Friend or Foe?

20743686

Rowan is a character from the book Reflection Pond by Kacey Vanderkarr.  He is described as being tall with wavy jet black hair that hangs to his shoulders, and light blue eyes.  The fae are beautiful and Rowan is no exception.  He is, intelligent, sarcastic, serious, rude, conceited, and an excellent fighter with both weapons and his hands.  His weapon of choice is the quarterstaff.  There is a darkness inside of him that he tries to keep contained.  One of his friends accused him of acting like an ass and he replied, “I’m not acting.  I am an ass.”  But there is another side to Rowan that he rarely lets others see.  He has put up walls to protect himself from getting hurt.  He can be selfless, loyal, protective and even kind to those that he has come to trust and love.  He does not trust or love easily, but when he does it is with his whole heart.  Each fae has their own power.  Every ones is different.  Rowan is a healer, which is ironic considering he is also a fighter.

Rowan grew up in the human world.  Without family, he was raised in the foster care system and it wasn’t a pleasant experience for him.  One of his foster fathers tried to kill him when he was a teenager.  The faerie trackers found him and he was brought through a portal to the faerie city of Eirensae.  He has been in the city for almost 2 years.  All the young fae, who come here, have an amulet hidden for them to find.  Once they find it they become bound to the city. They must find it by the time they have been in the city for 2 years or they are stripped of their power and sent back to live as a human.  Rowan has yet to find his and time is running out.  He is beginning to believe that he belongs in another fae city, Fraeburdh, the city of war.  He has never felt like he belongs in Eirensae, but he has made a few friends here and is reluctant to leave, especially after Callie arrives.  At first he doesn’t trust her, but she soon wheedles her way into his heart.  It soon becomes clear that Callie is in great danger and Rowan is the only one who can protect her.

Is Rowan a friend or foe?

Here are a few questions to help us find out.

Does the character intend to make good or bad consequences?

Rowan seems dark and angry, but he doesn’t intend to do things that have bad consequences.  A lot of his personality is a front to keep people away.  He is very good at pushing people away.  He is a healer and he enjoys helping people.  If he can’t find his amulet and has to live in the human world, he wants to be a doctor.

Do they perform acts for personal gain or to help others?

Rowan can be selfish, especially with those he doesn’t trust, but it is in his nature to help others.  He would never do anything to hurt the people of Eirensae even though he feels like an outsider.

Are their personality traits noble and with good intent?

Rowan is a mixture of personality traits.  He has some very annoying traits like being rude, conceited, and obnoxious.  These traits have been cultivated to keep people from seeing the real Rowan.  He has some very noble traits.  He can be selfless, loyal, and kind to those he cares about.  He will protect those he loves with his last breath if necessary.

Is the character dishonest?

The fae must tell the truth, but they can twist it a little bit or omit some things.  Rowan is basically honest, but he does try to hide who he really is from others and he will keep things from someone in order to protect them.

Does the character permit selfless acts?

Rowan is a healer and I think you have to be somewhat selfless in order to do that well.  There were a couple of times in the book where Rowan almost died saving Callie’s life.  He holds the life of those he loves more dear than his own life.

Does the character kill without thought or reason?

Rowan was responsible for the death of one person and it weighs heavily on his mind.  It happened when he was a teenager and just getting his power to heal.  His foster father tried to kill him and his foster mother was stabbed when she interfered.  She crawled over to check on him and he used her to heal himself.  He can only heal himself by channeling his power into someone else and then drawing it back into himself.  He was on deaths door and he took too much energy.  His Foster mother died and he blames himself.

Did the character feel guilty about their poor actions?

Rowan tries to protect those that he loves and sometimes bad things still happen.  When he can’t protect them, it makes him feel like he has let them down.  He is very hard on himself and feels a lot of guilt, especially about the death of his foster mother.

If the character did something bad, where they acting out of a past injury?

It is more likely that if Rowan does something bad it is an accident.  He feels like an outsider in the city, but he holds no ill will against the people.  He blames himself and thinks that there is something wrong with him.

Does the character do things out of revenge?

He hasn’t up to this point, but he is very protective of those he loves and I think if something happened to one of them, he could act out of revenge.

Does the character strive to get what they want by any means necessary?

Rowan does strive to get what he wants, but not by any means necessary.  He doesn’t purposely set out to hurt others, except maybe with his tongue.  There is a darkness inside of him and he tries to keep it under control.  It stems from his fae power.   He is very afraid of becoming a monster and hurting others.

I really enjoyed reading Reflection Pond and I must confess that I have read the sequel, Poison Tree.  It was just as good as the first book.  I absolutely love Rowan.  He is a wonderful character.  If you haven’t read these books, I highly recommend them.

After killing the men who tried to steal her father’s research, Juliet—along with Montgomery, Lucy, Balthazar, and a deathly ill Edward—has escaped to a remote estate on the Scottish moors. Owned by the enigmatic Elizabeth von Stein, the mansion is full of mysteries and unexplained oddities: dead bodies in the basement, secret passages, and fortune-tellers who seem to know Juliet’s secrets. Though it appears to be a safe haven, Juliet fears new dangers may be present within the manor’s own walls.
Then Juliet uncovers the truth about the manor’s long history of scientific experimentation—and her own intended role in it—forcing her to determine where the line falls between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science, and promises and secrets. And she must decide if she’ll follow her father’s dark footsteps or her mother’s tragic ones, or whether she’ll make her own.
With inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this breathless conclusion to the Madman’s Daughter trilogy is about the things we’ll sacrifice to save those we love—even our own humanity.

A COLD LEGACY excerpt
p.21-24
Montgomery stopped the horses outside a tavern. He came to the carriage door, opening it just a crack to keep the rain from drenching us. “I’m going to ask directions. We can’t be far now.”

We watched him saunter over the muddy street as though he didn’t even feel the bite of freezing rain. A face appeared in the tavern window. The door opened and he spoke to a woman in a wool dress for a few moments, then stomped back through the mud. “This village is called Quick,” he told us. “The manor’s only five miles from here.”

“Did you hear that?” Lucy murmured to Edward, still stroking his hair. “We’re almost there. Just hold on. Everything will be all right once we arrive.”

Montgomery’s eyes shifted to me. Neither of us wanted to remind Lucy that the prospect of Edward’s fever breaking—and the Beast’s reappearance—was almost more frightening than the fever itself. Delirious, he was less of a threat.

“Let’s go then,” I whispered to Montgomery. “And quickly.”

He closed the door and in another moment we were moving again, passing through the rest of Quick. Then all too soon the village was nothing but fading lights. The storm grew and the road became rougher, and all the while Edward’s eyes rolled back and forth beneath shuttered lids.

Thunder struck close by, and Lucy shrieked. Montgomery whipped the horses harder, pulling us along the uneven road impossibly fast, trying to outrun the storm. I twisted in the seat to look out the back window at the pelting rain. A stone fence ran alongside us.

“We must be getting close,” I said.

“Not soon enough,” Lucy breathed. “We’re going to crash if he keeps driving like this!”

The road widened, straightening, letting us travel even faster. Lightning struck close by, blinding me. The horses bolted. Lucy screamed and covered her eyes, but I couldn’t tear mine away. The lightning had struck an enormous oak tree, twisted from centuries of wind. The oak took flame, blazing despite the rain. A smoking gash ran down the trunk—the lightning’s death mark. I watched until the rain put out most of the flames, but it still smoldered, billowing hot ash into the night.

The horses pawed the earth, and I grabbed the window to steady myself. At this wild speed, just hitting a single rock at the wrong angle would send the carriage shattering to the ground. It was madness to go so fast. Couldn’t Montgomery calm the horses?

Just when I feared the carriage would careen out of control, it stopped short, throwing me against the opposite wall. I tangled in Lucy’s limbs as the chains around
Edward’s body clinked. Balthazar grunted, jerking awake at last. We scrambled in the bottom of the carriage until the door flew open.
Montgomery stood in the pelting rain. I feared he’d say we’d broken another strut or the horses had gone lame or we’d have to spend the night in the harsh storm.

But then I saw the lights behind him, and the night took shape into a turreted stone manor with bright lamps blazing and gargoyles on the roof vomiting rain into a stone
courtyard.
Montgomery’s eyes met mine beneath the low brim of his hat.

“We’ve arrived,” he said.

About Megan:

Hello!

I’ve been many things, like a professional exchange student, park ranger in Montana, and LOST enthusiast, but what I am now is a writer.

I think it’s fair to say I was born into it. I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, raised behind the counter of my parents’ independent bookstore, Highland Books in Brevard. Ah, so many free books. But I never thought being a writer could be a real career. After college I thought I’d end up as a foreign service officer somewhere dashing and exotic, like Canada. I studied French, Spanish, German, and Russian and still speak a few of those. Then I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Senegal, where I learned a few more languages I’ll never speak again and lived in a mud hut with no electricity or running water. You can probably imagine how that experience went, but if you’re curious, here are the dirty details

It wasn’t until a chance aquaintance read something I wrote and said, “have you ever considered being a writer?” that something clicked and I realized it was possible. My husband encouraged me, and I quickly fell head-over-heels in love with writing and children’s literature in particular. I started out writing articles, which have appeared in Faces, Appleseeds, and Calliope magazines, and stories for younger children. I soon realized I wasn’t sweet enough to write fiction
for that age and found myself writing young adult literature instead, which doesn’t require nearly as many tender moments and includes a lot more cursing.

When I’m not writing, I can usually be found horseback riding, day dreaming at coffee shops, or hiking in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. I love to hear from readers, so please drop me a line!

I am represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary.

Book Excerpt:

A yell shattered the quiet, echoing off the hard granite walls.

Ward jumped, his heart racing. He ground his teeth and forced himself to look ready and dangerous like Celia and Nazarius.

Nazarius jerked his chin toward the passage before them. “Up the ramp.”

Frozen by another yell, Celia glanced at Ward, a question in her expression hanging on the edge of her parted lips. Was she asking his permission? Probably just confirming what she already knew: if someone was in trouble, Ward would assist if he could.

The urge to go and help pulled at him.

No. Not this time. He had to stop Allette and not get caught up in someone else’s problems. He could, in the very least, learn from his mistakes.

But Celia’s frowned deepened. Another cry ricocheted around them and then another. The sound filled the passage, turning into a roar of angry voices. “We can’t take a chance on this not being Allette’s doing.”

“You know running headlong into trouble isn’t usually the best idea,” Nazarius said.

Ward snorted. “You think?”

But it does make life more exciting.” Celia flash them a fierce grin and rushed up the ramp.

Nazarius barked a quick laugh and raced after her.

This was a really, really bad idea, but if it was Allette, they would need all the help they could get. Goddess above, she couldn’t be allowed to commit any more murders.

About the Author:

I have always been drawn to story telling. In fact, I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t telling a story in my head or on paper. In grade school, we had journal writing time which I turned into story telling time, weaving tales of magic and adventure that mimicked the fairy tales and myths that I loved to read. It was there, with the help of two very special teachers, that I nurtured this love and started my journey as a writer.
I write fantasy, paranormal romance, and everything in between, seasoned with a good dash of adventure and mystery. Join me on my tales of magic, adventure, and romance.

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

Quote 1:

“No matter what happens, no matter who turns on me, no matter what pompous swine thinks he has power over me, I am still me. I will always be me.”
Sara Raasch, Snow Like Ashes

Quote 2:

“Even the strongest blizzards start with a single snowflake”
Sara Raasch, Snow Like Ashes

Quote 3:

“I need a book that says ‘Here’s how to defeat Spring and restore power to your king, and while you’re at it, here’s how to prove you matter when no one else thinks you do—”

I stop. I’m staring at the bookshelves and not at Theron, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to look at him again without shriveling up from embarrassment. … I can still hear what I said hanging around me, my weak, weak admission, and I can’t bring myself to breathe, let alone face him.

Theron doesn’t give me a choice. He crawls up onto his knees and moves into my line of sight, his forehead wrinkled and his eyes darting over mine like he’s trying to figure me out the same way he figured out that passage. After a moment of silence, he grimaces.

“You matter,” is all he says.”

Book Excerpt:

“What’s up?” he asked conversationally.

Where should I start? My life has spun completely out of control, or someone broke into my locker during lunch and took some of my stuff, or better yet, surprise, I’m not human.

I leaned my back against my locker, closed my eyes and slid down the length of it to the floor. A second later I felt Ian next to me. He didn’t touch me or say anything comforting. Which in my messed up state, I took as a sweet gesture. I was so overrun with dread and fear that I started to shake. I wrapped my arms tight over my chest and fought to pull myself together.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“It’s just been a really bad day,” I replied.

“Looks like more than just a bad day.”

“I shouldn’t be freaking out,” I said. “It’s really not that serious. Someone went through my locker while we were at lunch. You were right earlier when you said I was hiding. I’m a private person, and I don’t like that someone poked around in my things.”

I expected his reaction to be a shrug or some reassurance that it had been a harmless prank. Instead, he took a deep breath and looked me straight in the eye. “I think someone has been following you,” he stated.

That startled me. Could he really know about the black car that tailed me last night. I couldn’t see how. I tried to play it off by laughing. “Why would someone follow me?” I asked.

“Maybe its the guy who stole your book.” I started to object, but he stopped me. “It’s okay, Alison. You’re not in this alone.”

I wasn’t sure what he meant by that, but I wanted to get away from him and his concern as quickly as possible. I tried to get up, but he put a hand on my shoulder and held me back. “There’s a lot I need to tell you,” he continued, “but not here.”

“You have a lot to tell me about what?” I asked lightly.

He bent his head to meet my gaze straight on. “You can trust me,” he whispered. “I’m not here to hurt you.”

I shook my head at the absurdity of it all. It sounded like he was repeating words from a movie. Was this really my life?
