Dean Powell Character Interview

IGNITE-REVEAL

Dean Powell:

Dean Powell is the main love interest in Ignite by Lily Paradis. Dean is a very attractive man, a bit of a flirt, and doesn’t do relationships. He’s rather a complex character, with a surprising soft side. He’s had a really rough upbringing, which explains some of his behaviors. But through it all, he’s an amazing person that just wants to love and be loved.

Dean Powell Interview:

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself? My name is James Dean Powell. I like long walks on the beach, and Lauren Lindsay.

How old are you Dean? Twenty-one.

Who is your favorite comic book hero? Oliver Queen from The Green Arrow. I looked him up after the admissions woman mentioned the show to us when I was showing Lauren around campus. I’m trying to make Lauren dress up as Poison Ivy for Halloween.

What college do you attend and what are you studying? University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, studying Biology.

What do you want to be when you finish college? My major is biology, so I’m considering medical school, but that might put a strain on everyone. Maybe once Emma is older.

Do you remember that incident in the steam room? Why did you let that happen!? Oh I remember. That wasn’t that unusual for who I was at the time, unfortunately.

What do you like most about Lauren? Everything. But you’ll learn the specifics in Arclight… 😉

What did you go searching for in the mines and did you find what you were looking for? You’ll learn the answer to this one too. Lauren still doesn’t know, and she thinks I’m an idiot for it. You can make your own judgment once you know, but there’s a hint as to what I was looking for if you look closely at Ignite.

How many girls have you dated?  Dated? One.

What is your ideal date? I have a few ideas… watching Sleeping Beauty on the couch, making s’mores and blanket forts, going to the Snow Ball…

What is the quality you most like in a woman? Compassion.

Who was your first love? Lauren Annabelle Lindsay.

Do you have a secret you can share with me? I lived in 19 different foster homes.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? It’s hard for me to let people in because of the trust that I’ve had broken in the past. It’s easier not to involve emotions, and that’s my weak point.

What is your happiest childhood memory? Getting to hold Jenny in the hospital when she was born.

What is your greatest regret? Most of my childhood and the decisions I made once I left the foster system.

What is your biggest fear? Who have you told this to? Who would you never tell this to? Why? My biggest fear is losing my family, because I already lost them once. It took a long time to get Jenny back, and even longer to find Lauren. I think it’s pretty well known considering my feelings for her.

Who was your role model growing up and why did you look up to them? I didn’t have one until Josiah Lindsay came along and made me stop acting like my father.

Do you have a problem that wasn’t mentioned in the story? You’ll definitely find this out in Arclight…

What do you think of yourself? First I hated myself, and then I didn’t feel anything at all. It’s slowly coming back.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? I think it’s pretty close to perfect right now.

How do you envision your future? I don’t like to picture the future because it gives a false hope for what it could be. But I’m pretty happy with the way things are right now.

Well thank you so much for taking a moment to answer our questions Dean. We look forward to hearing more about you in Arclight (Ignite #2).

Ashalllyn’darkmyr Tallyn(Ash)

Ash

“My name is Ashallyn’darkmyr Tallyn, third son of the Unseelie Court…Let it be known–from this day forth, I vow to protect Meghan Chase, daughter of the Summer King, with my sword, my honor, and my life. Her desires are mine. Her wishes are mine. Should even the world stand against her, my blade will be at her side. And should it fail to protect her, let my own existence be forfeit. This I swear, on my honor, my True Name, and my life. From this day on…” His voice went even softer, but I still heard it as though he whispered it into my ear. “I am yours.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron Queen

Megan Chase and her friend Puck go into the fairy world(Nevermore) to rescue her younger brother that has been kidnapped.  While traveling through the wyldwood, they are chased by Ash and they barely escape.  Megan sees Ash again at the Elysium.  It is held at the castle of the seelie court.  Megan is the daughter of Oberon and Ash is the son of Mab.  To show respect, Megan dances with Ash.  In the end, Megan promises to turn herself over to the unseelie court and in exchange, Ash will help to get her brother back.

Ashallyn’darkmyr Tallyn is the true name of Ash.  He is the youngest son of the Winter Queen, Mab and is prince of the Winter Court.  He has two older brothers, Sage and Rowan.  He is a strikingly handsome man with thick black hair, silver eyes, and pale skin.  He is tall, lean, and muscular.  Megan first describes him as looking cold, hard, and inhuman.  Later she describes him as a handsome inhuman faery that is a daredevil and very loyal to those he loves.  He has a strong  winter glamour and is a formidable swordsman.   Ash is often cold and mysterious.  He rarely expresses emotion and it is hard to know what he is thinking.  He can totally close off his facial expressions, appearing blank and unreadable.  He learned this from the winter fey,  who consider emotions a major weakness.  He is a fairly loyal person and true to his word.

Now we ask the question: Friend or Foe?

Does the character do things that have good consequences? or bad consequences?

It depends on where his loyalties lie.  When he was loyal to Mab, he did what he was ordered to do and many of those things had bad consequences.  But Mab is his mother and he was raised to be cold and inhuman.  He does however, agonize over the bad things he has done.  Ash gradually changes after meeting Megan.  He allows himself to feel again and starts making better choices.  So the answer is yes to both questions.  He has done things that have good consequences and bad consequences.

Do they perform acts for personal gain or to help others?

Ash doesn’t do things for personal gain.  He does them out of loyalty to others.  First to his mother and then later to Megan and Puck.  Although he would never admit to doing anything for Puck.

Are their personality traits noble and with good intent?

Many of his personality traits are very noble.  He is loyal to those that he loves and would fight to the death for them, if necessary.  Because of his upbringing, he finds it very hard to let others into his life.  If you should betray him, It will be a very long time before he would forgive you, if ever.  Puck found this out the hard way.  He accidentally caused the death of Ash’s first love.  Although, Ash did eventually forgive him.

Is the character dishonest?

No, he is true to his word as all fairies are.

Does the character only consider their own interests?

No, as I said before, he would do anything for those that he loves.  He always puts their interests first.

Does the character permit selfless acts?

Yes, Ash can be very selfless in his attempts to protect those that he loves.

If the character does something with bad consequences, were they taking a risky action that could have good consequences, but they were willing to take the risk?

Ash is a daredevil and a risk taker.  If it is with his own life, he will take the risk, but if it is with the life of someone he loves, he would be a little more cautious.

Did the character feel guilty about their poor actions?

Yes, he does.  He is very hard on himself.

Does the character kill without thought or reason?

No, their is always a reason and he agonizes over it later.

Does the character do things out of revenge?

Yes, sometimes.  He tried to kill Puck on several occasions, because Puck was responsible for the death of his first love, even though it was an accident.

My thoughts:

Ash did some horrible things while he was loyal to his mother, but he changed after being with Megan.  I wont hold his past against him, because he didn’t know any better.  He became a good person.  I would consider him a friend.  How about you?

She limped toward him, waving frantically. “Hey! Wait! Over here!”

“What the heck were you doing in there?” The annoyed words tumbled out and Bobby regretted them instantly. As she hobbled closer, he could see her white teeth and red-gold hair that gleamed like a coin in the sun.

“I was running. I wrenched my ankle.” The girl extended a hand. “I’m Gabe.”

Bobby took the girl’s hand and shook. “Gabe?” he stammered, his face gone hot.

“It’s short for Gabriella.”

Bobby dared a longer look at the girl. She was tall, only a few inches shorter than him, leanly muscled, with freckled-all-over milky skin that looked like it couldn’t withstand very much sun. Just the same, the fragile skin was stretched over sinewy muscle, an athlete sculpted from a bar of Ivory soap. This girl, Bobby decided, was durable. She didn’t look like she’d break too easily. His heart picked up speed of its own accord and he had to struggle to keep the tremor out of his voice. “You shouldn’t be talking to strangers.”

The girl laughed and shielded her light eyes against the sun. “You don’t look all that strange.”

Bobby shrugged. “You can’t always tell.”

“Well, tell me your name and then you won’t be just a tall, handsome stranger who picked me up on the side of the road.”

Bobby felt himself blush. She had called him handsome. But words came easily to this girl, words she probably didn’t mean, while for him finding the right words was like panning for gold. “Bobby. Bobby Pendell.”

“Short for Robert?”

“Uh, yeah. But no one calls me that. Except my dad when he gets pissed off.”

“Well, Bobby Robert Pendell, right now I have no choice but to rely on the kindness of tall, handsome strangers. My cell gets no reception out here and if I’m not back at the restaurant for dinner my dad’s going to kill me.”

Bobby peered at the girl from under his trucker’s cap. Definitely a weekender. She was too buffed and polished to be anything else. “Which restaurant? There’re three in town.”

Gabe snickered. “That many, huh?”

Bobby stuck his hands in his pockets and looked down at his scuffed work boots. It was a waste of time worrying what this girl thought of him. She was clearly way out of his league. And he had more important things to think about. “Look, I, uh—I got to get somewhere. I’ll give you a ride, if you want. But I got to hurry.”

“Where are you going?”

“My brother’s Little League game. Which is probably over by now.”

“Isn’t that the ball park right up the road?”

Bobby nodded. “Yep. That’s why we got to hurry if you want me to drop you at your restaurant. Would help if you just told me which one.”

“Why don’t I come with you?”

The girl was beginning to irk him. Maybe, like the cat that toyed with its injured prey before it pounced for the kill, she sensed her power. Like the girls at school. His high school was located in the bigger town of Waterbury, and the girls there all looked down on the so-called “hicks” from the more rural towns like Graxton and Fernville.

“To the game? Thought you were in a big hurry. I don’t mind driving you to the restaurant, though, if you’d just tell me which one.”

“I love baseball.”

“It’s just a Little League game.”

“I love kids.” She leaned down to pet Pete, who’d been circling her, wagging his tail. “I love dogs, too. I have plenty of time, if you’re giving me a ride.”

“Insistent, aren’t you?”

“I just got up here for the summer and I don’t know a soul. Basically, I’m lonely and bored. Besides, I throw a mean curve ball.”

The girl’s face broke into a wide smile and Bobby’s knees buckled a little. She was pretty. Really pretty. And she seemed a little desperate for company. He supposed it couldn’t hurt to let her join him.

“It’s not even summer yet. Don’t you have school?”

For a flash of a second, Gabe looked fidgety. Then she straightened and tossed her hair behind her shoulders. “My school’s out for the summer.”

“What kind of school gets done in May?”

Gabe looked him square in the eye. “The kind of school I go to.”

“What kind of sch—?”

She brushed past and, interrupting him, said, “C’mon, then. Get in the truck.”

He watched Gabe through the smeared glass of the truck windows. As she opened the door, Pete leapt past her and took his place on the seat next to Bobby.

She laughed and climbed in. “Looks like someone is used to having you all to himself.”

“Guess so.” Bobby started the truck, wishing he weren’t so damned tongue-tied all the time. He cleared his throat and forced out words, hating how gruff his voice sounded. He wished Coco were here. He would know how to talk to a girl like this. Coco could talk to anyone. “What restaurant were you going to?”

The girl smiled and patted Pete on the head. “The Graxton Grill, of course.”

“The Catskill House is where all the weekenders go.”

“Are you implying I’m a weekender?”

“You’re not from here. So that means you’re a weekender.”

The girl rubbed her ankle, then turned back to Bobby. “I’m here for the whole summer. So that makes me more than a weekender.”

“Why the Graxton Grill?”

“What are you, the local food columnist?”

Bobby’s mouth quirked up in a half-smile. “I think I have the right to know, since I saved you from the corn stalks.”

“My dad owns it.”

The air rushed out of Bobby’s lungs. “Your dad? Your dad is Max Friend?”

“That’s me. Gabe Friend. Sadly, also known as Gabby Friend. Welcome to my nightmare.”

“Gabby Friend?” Bobby stifled a snort. “That’s harsh.”

Gabe fixed him with a wry smile. “Imagine my life in middle school. Especially since I was too shy to utter a peep.”

Bobby didn’t talk much at school, either, but he couldn’t imagine this girl ever being bashful and shy.

“I work at the Graxton Grill,” he said finally. “Your dad is my boss.”

“Is that so?”

Bobby stole a glance at her, but she just stared out the window, suddenly disinterested. Had he offended her? He really had no idea how to talk to this girl. And, though he was pretty sure it was a bad idea, he really wanted to. Max Friend had a policy against employee dating—knives, fire, and romance are a bad combo, he had told them all the day the restaurant reopened. His daughter would be off-limits for sure. “Um, how’s your ankle?”

“Better. It was just a twist.”

It only took a minute to get to the ball field where Aaron’s Little League game was at the end of the sixth inning. Aaron was pitching a shutout, and in minutes the game ended. His team erupted in a roar, ran to the mound and mobbed the triumphant pitcher, but Aaron had already spotted Bobby watching from the sidelines and broke away from the tangle of bodies. Picking up speed, he barreled into Bobby’s arms, a bundle of sweaty hair, grime, and sparkling blue eyes.

“Dude! We won! We won! We made it to the playoffs!”

“I know. I saw!”

Aaron pulled away, noticing the stranger in their midst. “Who are you?”

“She’s,” Bobby stammered, “…a friend.”

Gabe smiled, all freckles and sunshine, and extended a hand. Bobby’s heart revved up inside his chest, but he kept his expression placid and flat, like the waters of Scratch Lake—before the weird turbulence earlier that morning.

“Literally. I’m Gabe Friend,” she said.

Frowning, Aaron looked from her hand to her face. “I never saw you before.”

“No, you haven’t,” Gabe said. “But I’ll bet I can hit any kind of pitch you can throw at me.”

Pete had picked up a stray ball and hunkered down, gnawing contentedly at it on the grass. Barely limping, Gabe strolled over to a bat that had been flung aside in the chaos. “We could go up on that hill and have a practice.” She gestured toward a sloping tract of mown grass that flattened at the top.

“Thought you were in a big hurry,” Bobby said.

“There’s always time for baseball.” Gabe glanced at her watch. “Besides, I still have time, if you’re giving me a ride. It’s only two-thirty and I don’t actually have to be at the restaurant until four for the dinner rush.”

Bobby glanced at Aaron. “It’s laundry night, but I guess it’s okay.”

Pensive, Aaron’s upper lip quivered into a sneer. Bobby laughed under his breath. Aaron never could walk away from a challenge or a fight. Which was why Bobby needed to show up from time to time at Aaron’s school playground at recess. “Bet you can’t.” Aaron wrestled the slimy ball from Pete’s jaws. “Give me that, Pete.”

Gabe gathered her hair into a hasty ponytail, revealing the sloping curve of her pale neck. Bobby tried to ignore the corresponding shiver that rushed from his thighs to his throat. “We shall see, won’t we, Little Pendell?” she said, hefting the bat over her shoulder.

“My name is Aaron,” his brother said emphatically.

Bobby chuckled as they trudged up to the hill, Aaron and Gabe in the lead. Aaron had no problem dealing with Gabe. Sometimes Bobby wished he were eleven again. In his memories, with Mom still around, those were golden times. But, then again, Aaron was much tougher than him, struggling with things eleven-year-old Bobby had never dreamed of.

Pete straggled behind, investigating the tall grass and weeds that marked the boundary between the neatly mown grass and the woods. The clearing at the top of the hill was bordered on three sides by state land, woods that stretched for endless miles to the east, and ended at the reservoir to the west.

“Go easy on her, A-man,” Bobby said when they’d reached the top of the hill.

“No need.” Gabe was already crouched in a batter’s stance, tapping the ground with the tip of the bat.

“You asked for it,” Aaron said, and let loose a fast, low-riding pitch. Gabe stepped quickly out of the way as it whizzed past.

“What are you, scared?” Aaron called out, laughing.

“That would have been a ball,” Gabe said, back in position, bat slung over her shoulder. “A little higher next time. I’m seventeen, not eleven.”

“Nice and easy, Aaron,” Bobby cautioned. All he needed was for the boss’ daughter to get hurt.

Gabe laughed and blew a stray strand of hair out of her eyes. “Oh, c’mon. I’m not made of glass and fluffy stuff. I play softball.”

Focusing, Aaron drew his pitching arm back and hurled the ball hard. It sailed cleanly toward Gabe at waist level and Bobby cringed, imagining it slamming into her stomach. But Gabe took a fierce swing. The bat connected with a loud crack and soared above Aaron’s head, clear into the woods.

“Hey! That was our only ball!”

“Pete’ll find it,” Bobby said. “He’s a hunting dog. Get it, boy! Go get the ball!”

The dog tore through the weeds into the woods, the three of them bounding after him. Gabe, apparently recovered from her strained ankle, was right on Aaron’s heels as they crunched between the towering oaks through the underbrush after Pete.

Pete had already stopped, sniffing at the ball, which had come to rest at the base of a large tree, when a strange tightness in his skull tugged Bobby in the opposite direction. His gaze fell on a faded strip of material snagged in the bark of a dead tree trunk. Drawn inexplicably toward it, he crunched through the ferns and dried leaves, the sounds of laughter and Pete’s barking muted, drowned out by the thump of his heart in his ears.

Standing at the base of the tree, his boots rooted to the forest floor, the back of Bobby’s head had begun to throb.

Not this again.

He reached for the strip of cloth as if sticking his hand into fire, and…saw the vague form of someone running wildly, breathing hard…

Crashing through the woods. Heart speeding, each beat like the swing of an axe. Can’t do it. Can’t run anymore. Have to stop. To stop.

Bobby yanked back his hand from the bit of cloth as though it had burned him. The vision still fluttered in front of his eyes like the final images from a broken movie projector. It was as if he were that person, hearing fragments of their frantic thoughts, yet he could see them as though he were watching from a distance.

It was like a memory. A vividly terrifying memory.

But it wasn’t his memory.

Book Quotes:

“Me? Die? Didn’t they tell you, princess? I’m Robin Goodfellow.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

War?” Something cold touched my cheek, and I glanched up to see snowflakes swirling in a lightning-riddled sky. It was eerily beautiful, and I shivered. “What will happen then?”
Ash stepped closer. His fingers came up to brush the hair from my face, sending an electric shock through me from my spine to my toes. His cool breath tickled my ear as he leaned in.
“I’ll kill you.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

“Careful, human.” Grimalkin appeared on the corner of the stage, overshadowed by the dead chimera. “Do not lose your heart to a faery prince. It never ends well.”
“Who asked you?” I glared at him. “And why do you always pop up when you’re not wanted? You got your payment. Why are you still following me?”
“You are amusing,” purred Grimalkin.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron King

My Thoughts:

This entire series is amazing! The story continues with Meghan in The Iron Daughter (book 2), The Iron Queen (book 3), and from Ash’s point of view in The Iron Knight (book 4). Each book just get’s better and better. Each of them are entirely epic andfantastic and the last book is my all time favorite of the entire series. If you like fantasy, fae, adventure, and a love story that’d doomed from the start, then be sure to check this book out! The first book always made me think of the movie the Labrinth since Meghan goes through the land of fae in order to find her brother, only with a few technological twists. And if you like the Iron Fey, be sure to check out Evan’s point of view in the Call of the Forgotten Series!  Check out The Iron King on Goodreads!

Quote 1:

“A person can be educated and still be stupid, and a wise man can have no education at all.”
Jennifer A. Nielsen, The False Prince

Quote 2:

“You are the biggest fool of a boy I’ve ever known,” Mott said. Then his tone softened. “But you will serve Carthya well.”
“I wish I felt ready to do this,” I said. “The closer we come to the moment, the more I see every defect in my character that caused my parents to send me away in the first place.”
“From all I’m told, the prince they sent away was selfish, mischievous, and destructive. The king who returns is courageous, noble, and strong.”
“And a fool,” I added
Mott chuckled. “You are that too.”

But as Rowansmark bears down and uneasy alliances are tested, will Rachel and Logan’s love for each other be enough to surmount the unbelievable odds against them?

My Review:

I loved this book!  It was a great end to a wonderful series.  The story is well developed and beautifully written.  I was on the edge of my seat through most of the book.  I love the characters, especially Rachel and Logan.  They had to endure many hardships in this book and at times, I was very worried, but that is what makes great storytelling. Rachel and Logan have a wonderful love story.

Rachel lives in a society where woman have very few rights.  They must have a male protector and they are not allowed to go out in society by themselves.  Rachel was raised by her father to be self reliant and to think for herself.  She is smart, confident,  cares deeply for her family and friends. and is a natural leader.   She is also very much in love with Logan.  She would do anything to keep him save, including sacrificing herself.

Logan was trained to be a courier by Rachel’s father.  When Jared  goes missing, Logan becomes her new protector.  Logan is an orphan, an outcast, and an inventor.  He will do anything to protect Rachel and soon realizes the true depth of his feelings for her.  He becomes a great leader through the series and many people rely on his ability to make plans.

At the beginning of this book, Rachel and Logan are separated.  Rachel  has been kidnapped by Ian, while Logan is surrounded by Rowansmark trackers and the Commander and his army.  Will Logan be able to come up with a plan to escape and rescue Rachel in time?  You will have to read the book to find out.

If you haven’t read this series, you definitely should.  The series contains the books Defiance, Deception, and Deliverance.  I would recommend them to anyone who likes books about dystopian societies or post apocalyptic literature.  I give this book 5 stars.

Grace Brisbane

GRACE

“I fell for her in summer, my lovely summer girl,
From summer she is made, my lovely summer girl,
I’d love to spend a winter with my lovely summer girl,
But I’m never warm enough for my lovely summer girl,
It’s summer when she smiles, I’m laughing like a child,
It’s the summer of our lives; we’ll contain it for a while
She holds the heat, the breeze of summer in the circle of her hand
I’d be happy with this summer if it’s all we ever had.”
Maggie Stiefvater, Shiver

Grace Brisbane is a character from The Shiver Trilogy by Maggie Stievfater.  The books include Shiver, Linger, and Forever.  These are great books for anyone who loves a good werewolf story.  Grace is a wonderful character.  She is described as having long dark blonde hair, brown eyes, and fair skin.  She is slender and very pretty with fading scars on her shoulders from a wolf attack.

Grace is very independent due to the neglect of her parents.  She is a mathematical genius and likes her things to be neat and orderly.  She is the kind of girl that prefers solitude and writes down her New Years resolutions.  It is hard for her to let people in, but once she does, she is very loyal to them.  She would do anything to help her friends.

Grace was attacked by wolves when she was eleven years old.  She was saved by a wolf named Sam and now she feels a deep connection to him.  The connection goes both ways, because Sam comes to the woods beyond her house and watches for her.  Grace watches for him also, and thinks of him as her wolf.  Sam is waiting for her to change, but she  doesn’t, because she was left in a car on a very hot day.  The resulting fever kept her from changing.

Some hunters in the area lead an illegal hunt after the death of a local teen.  They are killing any wolf that they can find.  Sam is shot and ends up on Grace’s back porch.  She knows it is him and now it is her turn to pay him back for saving her.

Now we ask the question:  Friend or Foe?

Does the character perform acts for personal gain or to help others?

Grace is very selfless.  She only tries to help people and she doesn’t care about personal gain.

Is the character dishonest?

She is a very honest person, but she would lie to protect those that she loves.

Does the character kill without thought or reason?

The answer is no.  She has a great respect for life.  I’m not sure if she could even kill a fly.

Does the Character permit selfless acts?

Yes, Grace would gladly give up her life to save those that she loves.

Does the Character do things out of revenge?

No, she would never even consider it.

Does the character do things that have bad or good consequences?

Grace would try to make sure that the consequences turn out good.  She would weigh her options very carefully.  If she did something that ended up with bad consequences, it wasn’t by intent.

Are the characters personality traits noble and with good intent?

Yes, she is very noble and tries to do the right things.

Does the character strive to get what they want through any means necessary?

No, she would never do anything that would cause injury to another.  Not even when that person has caused them great harm.

Does the character stand by while others perform horrendous acts?

No, she would try and stop it.  She is determined to find a way to save the wolves from the illegal hunters, without hurting the hunters.

Are actions or intentions more important?

I believe that actions are more important and I think that Grace would agree with that.  Without actions, good intentions are worthless.

My thoughts:

Grace is a great protagonist.  You might even consider her actions to be heroic.  In my opinion, she is definitely a friend.  If you haven’t read The Shiver Trilogy, you really should.  It is a great series and Maggie Stievfater is a master story teller.

Trial by Fire (The Worldwalker Trilogy #1)

by Josephine Angelini (Goodreads Author)

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying experiences that others in her hometown of Salem take for granted, which is why she is determined to enjoy her first high school party with her best friend and longtime crush, Tristan. But after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class, Lily wishes she could just disappear.

Suddenly, Lily is in a different Salem—one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruelest of them all is Lillian . . . Lily’s other self in this alternate universe.

What makes Lily weak at home is what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. In this confusing world, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can’t hope to shoulder alone and a love she never expected.

Quote 1:

“Sorry about today,” he said sincerely.  “I didn’t mean to drag you into it.”
“That was some slap.  How’s your face?”
He sighed dramatically.  “Unfortunately, the nurse said that slap was loaded with cooties.”
Lily sucked in a pained breath.  “Cooties.  You know what that means?”
“They’ll have to amputate.”
“Girls across the tri-state area will be inconsolable.  A national day of mourning is sure to follow.”
He smiled at her lazily, his mouth inches away, eyes locked with hers.  Lily desperately wanted to forget the whole thing and kiss his cootie-infested face, but something held her back.

Quote 2:

She was on the floor, her fever eating her up inside, and then it all shifted.
She saw herself lying there, teeth clacking together, spine bowing and arching as her muscles pulled her bones and joints to their limits.  She hovered there, above herself, watching her body tear itself apart.  Then–she didn’t hear a girl’s voice, not exactly.  It was fainter than that, like it was coming from far away, and the words were being placed inside her head.
You are sick in this world.
Lily wondered if she was talking to herself.
Come to me and be the most powerful person in the world.
But … I don’t want to go, Lily thought.  The faint voice went away,
and Lily fell back into her body.

An engrossing, complex, romantic fantasy perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore or Maggie Stiefvater, set in a wholly unique world. Salome Montgomery fears winter—the cold, the snow, the ice, but most of all, the frozen pond she fell through as a child. Haunted by the voices and images of the strange beings that pulled her to safety, she hasn’t forgotten their warning to “stay away.” For eleven years, she has avoided the winter woods, the pond, and the darkness that lurks nearby. But when failing health takes her grandparents to Arizona, she is left in charge of maintaining their estate. This includes the “special gifts” that must be left at the back of the property. Salome discovers she’s a key player in a world she’s tried for years to avoid. At the center of this world is the strange and beautiful Nevin, who she finds trespassing on her family’s property. Cursed with dark secrets and knowledge of the creatures in the woods, his interactions with Salome take her life in a new direction. A direction where she’ll have to decide between her longtime crush Colton, who could cure her fear of winter. Or Nevin who, along with an appointed bodyguard, Gareth, protects her from the darkness that swirls in the snowy backdrop. An evil that, given the chance, will kill her.

Exclusive Excerpt!

The pond water rippled while the trees bent beneath the strong gusts. Soon, everything became so  white I couldn’t see the house. In the distance a strange tinkling sounded, like dozens of wind chimes. Not the chimes. Not the chimes. Not the chimes, I repeated over and over in my mind.

What had the shrink told me to do?

Ten, nine, eight. Breathe. Seven, six, five. Shit! I held my head in my hands for a long moment. Get it together.

Panic stole my thoughts and I raised my head, backing away from the pond as the flurries swirled toward me. Chasing me.

I bumped into something—something that felt quite human. A firm chest, arms, hands. Not something, someone. A shriek tumbled from my lips and I spun around to face my captor.

“It’s okay. I won’t hurt you,” a soft masculine voice said, pale hands clinging to my arms as he kept me from falling.

My gaze followed those long fingers, then up black leather sleeves, to the most gorgeous face I’d ever seen. My breath caught in my throat. I was gawking. But I couldn’t help it. His raven hair was shot with strands of blue, his face was pale and perfect, like an ice sculptor had chiseled it into existence. His eyes—oh God, his eyes. They were the palest blue I’d ever seen. Glacial. He had to be over six feet tall, muscles evident through the tight shirt he wore beneath his unzipped leather jacket.

His mouth turned up at the corners as if enjoying my scrutiny. A cocky grin that made my cheeks warm and my whole body buzz. “You’re trespassing.” I tried to keep the tremble from my voice. “This is private property, or can’t you read the signs?” Bravo. I’d scare him off with my bitchiness.

He chuckled. And it sounded like the low song of chimes. “Doris doesn’t mind me coming around. In fact, I’ve met you before, Salome.”

My name on his lips made my knees go buttery. I groaned inwardly.

Rebekah was born and raised in Michigan (just look for the mitten-shaped state on the map). She’s lived there most of her life other than the few years she spent in the U.S. Army. At which time she got a chance to experience MO, KS, SC, and CA.

She works full time for the court system and in her free time she writes YA stories. Pretty much any genre within the YA realm is game for her, but her favorites are fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, thrillers, light sci-fi, and some time travel.
She also has a big family–she like to considers them the modern day Brady Bunch. When her hubby and her met and got married, he had 3 children from a previous marriage, she had 2 and have 1 together. It’s a lot of fun though.
And she can’t forget her other family members–yep, they’ve got some pets: 4 dogs, 3 cats, and 1 turtle. Everyone in the family has one…she won’t bore you all with their names (unless you really want to know). Okay, you talked her into it! Jack, Pearl, Grr…(yes that’s her dog’s name), Callie, Shadow, Mooshoo, Grouchy, and Sorbert. Other than writing some of her other hobbies include: reading (mostly YA of course), singing, swimming, football, soccer, running, camping, sledding, church, hanging with her kids, and traveling. She belong to a fabulous writing group called YA Fiction Fantatics (YAFF) and you guessed it they all write YA!

REPPED by Jennifer Mishler and Frances Black of Literary Counsel. And that’s her in a big ‘ol nutshell.

Guardian of the Underworld Review

21898862

Guardian of the Underworld (Underworld Chronicles, #1)

by Rachel Tetley (Goodreads Author)

Book Synopsis(Goodreads):

Two worldsNeither can exist without the other

And one guardian to ensure their survival

But a family with a score to settle

Forces one boy, into a dangerous adventure

Jake Summers is an ordinary boy with an ordinary family- so he thinks. He has just spent another summer holidays building dens in the woods with his best friend Paul. But when someone special unexpectedly dies, Jake is determined to find out the truth, unaware that it will change his life forever.

He discovers a key to Grandpa’s forbidden room, and is plunged into a long-forgotten magical world, together with class mate Arianna Brown and a strange creature called Noggin. Stormy seas, underground carts pulled by Golden Eagles and a dragon all stand in his way. He must race against time to fulfil an ancient magical prophecy and save the world.

Quote From Book:

“The storm disappeared as quickly as it had started.  All that was left was the rhythmic dripping of water from the leaves no longer able to hold their weight, and the distant but constant trickle of the river that ran through the woods.

A kingfisher sat on a branch high above, looking down at Evander.  The man’s body was hidden by night’s cloak, but his face glowed in the moonlight.  In fact, it seemed as though all the light that lit the woods — the shimmering reflections, the glowing fireflies — was now focused on his face, and was getting brighter.  It held at its brightest for just a second, then faded and spread out amongst the trees.

A second kingfisher appeared on Evander’s chest.  It flew up to join the other and they peppered each other with kisses before flying side by side into the heart of the woods.”

My Review:

This book has a lot of good things going for it.  It was a little slow at first, but soon picks up speed.  Then it is a roller coaster ride to the end.  The story is well written and very imaginative.  The main characters, Jake and Arianna, are very likable and easy to relate to.  The villain is truly despicable.

There were some things that I didn’t like about the book.  Sometimes there wasn’t enough description to understand what was going on.  I would be reading and then I would think what? and then I would have to go back and read it again to get things a little clearer in my head.  Also, the author created a good villain and then didn’t use him to his full potential.  There should have been an epic showdown between him and the main protagonists.

Overall, it was a good read and I would recommend it to middle school age children.  I would also recommend it to any one who likes the  Harry Potter and  Percy Jackson series.  I give this book four stars.
