My Review

Fear My Mortality is a gripping journey of life and death. I was incredibly intrigued from the first page of this book. It’s so new and well-written that it became so easy to be captured immediately and desperate to find out more with Ava.

The world seems to be filled with a mass of psychopaths that find creative ways to main and kill each other. It’s sounds brutal, of course, except for the little detail of people coming back. Filled with fast healers and slow healers; these people that cannot die find peace with their enemies as a result. After all, what would be the point of fighting when no one can win? Except, peace is rarely that simple and as Ava discovers, there is so much more to the factions that exist in her world. The ability to heal faster is now a determination of superiority, at least to some people. The ability to kill…well it seems to be a high commodity for all the people holding a grudge.

There is this incredible cycle of action mixed with discovery as Ava and Michael run from everyone. Secrets that test the delicate trust between them as well as everyone Ava has known. She barely has time to come to grips with her brothers death before she forced to face her entire life changing. I was really shocked a few times in this book, especially with the action of Ava’s parents. As Ava struggles to survive and decide where she could ever be safe, she continues to think about the brother she lost. Ava eventually discovers all of his struggles and what he did to protect her before his death. It really hit home for me.

Michael is many things. Such a wonderfully complex character that accompanies Ava and is determined to protect her. With an extraordinary ability to heal, he might just have a chance to get her to safety relatively unharmed. Of course, it’s much more complicated than that. For one, he was the one to kill her brother. Two, he also happens to be the son of the man running the operation that’s hunting her. Three, he might have been the one to set off the chain of events that ruined her life. It sounds bad but Michael is a great character that cares for Ava at the risk of his own life.

There’s quite a interesting theme about the concept of this book. That if we are mortal, we have more compassion for others and it’s literally in our DNA. Mortals have the ability to live life to the fullest and grow. It’s brought up that Ava has this quality and shared it with her brother as well. However, strangely it was Michael that displayed the most compassion for me. Not to mention growth. He follows orders and fights like everyone else, careless about his life because he heals faster than anyone. Yet after the startling revelation that he’s killed Ava’s brother, his life has twisted and he rebels against everyone and everything he knew. He plans to leave everything behind and help Ava in anyway he can. As more of his history is revealed as well, Ava comes to understand and trust him.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. It’s action can be slightly disturbing with gore but has this amazing energy that makes the scenes flow so well. I honestly read this in a matter of hours and look forward to reading more from Frost. Ava is a great character with admirable traits and I enjoyed the amazing ferocity, compassion, and smart decisions she made. I’m really looking forward to a sequel.

Excerpt:

Jaxen’s on the edge of the bed with nothing but a pair of gunmetal gray sweatpants on, an empty glass in his hand, and a half-empty bottle resting by his feet.

He looks so tortured. Looks at me as if he wishes he were seeing someone else. Someone less distant and broken. It feels like ice is eating away at my bones. Like fire is scorching every one of my nerves.

“How did your meeting go?” His strangled words slur a little.

“Okay, I guess.”

I make my way over to him, but everything feels so unfamiliar and shaky—like walking into another plane of time. Like stepping on a spider web and finding myself caught as the truth makes its way across, ready to spin me and drain my blood.

He makes a haphazard gesture for me to sit next to him. “That good?”

“It was fine,” I lie, taking the empty glass from his hand. I grab the bottle by his feet, pour myself a shot, and toss it back, reveling in the fiery burn running down my throat that washes away the awful taste the Belladonna I took a few minutes ago left behind.

“So, this is what we’ve become then?”

I hate the desolation in his voice. There’s a desert between us without a hope for either one of us crossing it.

“What’s that?” I ask a little tersely, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand and downing another shot. I’m trying to pretend I don’t know where this is headed. That I don’t see and hear the heartache ripping our guts out right now, because I need to pretend. I need to fake that everything is okay. Need him to believe I’m fine because the moment I don’t… the moment he looks at me, knowing I’ll die and seeing that death reflected in his gaze, then it will all be over.

Everything.

He tries to clear his throat, but the sound is painful. Like he’s swallowing tears. “I don’t know. Strangers? Two lovers who lie to one another? Who hide things from each other? Who can’t turn to each other whenever something bad is happening?”

I don’t recognize this Jaxen. This raw ache in his voice that scratches at the door of my heart, waiting for me to open it. I find myself missing the old him. The one who had his emotions under control. Who could take this pain and survive in it.

I set the glass down. Brace my hands on my knees as the alcohol sends my brain spinning. “I love you, Jaxen. More than I could ever explain to you.”

He laughs like he might be losing his mind. “Yet, here we are, our entire future splitting off from each other.” The cynicism in his voice is as thick as tar, and it’s choking my ability to think. To make sense of what I should and shouldn’t say.

I need a breath of fresh air. Need a new body to hide in. One where I’m safe from his prodding. Safe from myself.

“Jaxen, what am I supposed to do?”

“Stop shutting me out.” His chest heaves, heart throbbing in his neck.

I find a shadow across the room. Feel my regret slip down my cheek.

“I can’t even feel your mind anymore. It’s like you’re… you’re purposefully pulling away from me. Like you’re a ghost haunting me.” His eyes are flashing with anger now. He’s two steps from falling off the edge. From losing it all. I want to tell him everything. Want to tell him about my impending death, and that it’s easier this way because he’s going to lose me, only, not because of his curse.

Because of my curse.

“There are things, Jaxen. Things we knew would happen one way or another,” I say, and I find myself surprised by how calm I sound when my heart rattles at the cage of my bones to be free from my irrevocable torture.

“Things,” he retorts, spitting out the word with heavy distaste. “No, Faye. Things are that dresser or this pillow. Things are not the secrets Mack, Weldon, and Seamus has asked you to keep from me. Things are not the way you’ve been handling everything lately. That’s called shutting down. That’s called knowing about something that’s going to happen… that’s going to affect both of us, and you deciding not to tell me.”

I can’t believe the anger radiating off him like heat waves. The fury raging in his eyes as his hands clench and unclench against his legs, like he’s trying to contain the outburst that’s been coming my way since we returned here to Ethryeal City.

  1. How has being a Texan influenced your writing?

Oh my gosh, in every way! My protagonists are Texans, my settings include Texas. One of my favorite authors is a Texan (Larry McMurtry). Texas permeates my novels.

  1. Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?

My favorite books have always had heart, humor, and suspense, so when I started writing stories, that is what I wanted to achieve. Ultimately, I guess you’d say I write romantic mystery. But I also wanted women with strength and intelligence in my novels, and I hope I’ve achieved that.

  1. What was the hardest part of writing this book?

The hardest part of writing Hell to Pay was that I’d just had surgery and had a reaction to the anesthesia that has had a permanent impact on my memory. Even though I write two novels a year, and thus had written the previous six novels in the prior three years, I had trouble remembering them, and even remembering what I had written the same day much less the day before. I’ve tried to develop a sense of humor about it, but it did make it much more challenging than my other novels!

  1. Who are some of your favorite authors you feel were influential in your work? What impact have they had on your writing?

I am very influenced by other authors. For characterization, I hope I learned from Larry McMurtry. For emotion and setting (o glorious setting), I tip my hat to Pat Conroy, who I will miss so much. For humor, I love the first few Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich. For a butt-kicking female protagonist, Sara Paretsky’s V.I. Warshawski takes the cake. And for amateur sleuthing in the mystery world, I love Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple and Peter Fischer’s Jessica Lansbury in Murder, She Wrote.

  1. Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How does that affect your writing?

I’m full-time! Which gives me more time to procrastinate (just kidding). When I was working full-time at a job other than writing, I scrapped to find enough time to write. Now that writing is full-time, I find that I’ve had to figure out how and when I do what activities best. The job of writing involved story planning, outlining, first drafts, rewrites, and the job of publishing takes 50% of my time away from writing, especially now that I have seven novels, two box sets, and six nonfiction books out. I write best, it turns out, in the early afternoon. So I spend my mornings on the business of publishing, and my afternoons on my stories.

Melanie can only pray her secret that the Ace of Hearts is alive and manipulating them all in a final deadly game is never revealed.

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

If there was one thing Melanie
S’velare was sure of, it was that her soul was in jeopardy because she was a
witch. Not because she’d made a demonic deal, but because she suspected her
powers might be stronger than she was. She was afraid that one day, the lightning
and thunder churning inside her would rip through her control, leaving her soul
and body open to the Ace of Hearts, like an unlocked door to a burglar.
The
Ace of Hearts, if it was still alive, would kill for that chance.
“Princess,
are you listening?” Mrs. Elyse Clovis Bouchard asked. Melanie’s tutor in
political arts, Mrs. Bouchard was of average height, average weight, and fish
mouthed, which sent the whole picture of the woman off kilter. When she spoke,
spit flew across the library in direct proportion to how much enthusiasm she
had for the subject. She was currently attempting to teach Melanie the finer
arts of political maneuvering that led to the rise of the Ottoman Empire, known
not only for its wealth, but in the secret world that Melanie occupied, for its
elemental power over huge swaths of civilization. Mrs. Bouchard’s spit had
spattered on Melanie’s notebook paper in three fat drops.
“Yes,”
Melanie said, looking up from the spittle wrinkling the paper. She was in a
class of one, no longer able to attend public school because of the unusual
things that tended to happen when she was in any sort of mood that wasn’t
perfect relaxation. That, and she’d destroyed an entire classroom and
traumatized several students three months previously when an azri had attacked
her, tried to eat her soul and take the Ace of Hearts, her reliquary of power,
from her. Also, Melanie was a huge insurance liability because she tended to
start electrical fires every twenty-eight days or so when her emotions took a
turn into the depressive and destructive, in a three day hormonal sprint.
“Have
you some other place to be?”
Melanie
pushed herself straight in her chair and rapidly blinked her eyes, trying in
vain to force herself awake. “No,” Melanie said. “I’m just having
a hard time staying awake.”
“Do
I bore you, Princess?” Mrs. Bouchard looked down her nose over those fish
lips at her.
Melanie
swallowed. She needed to know these things. She needed this strategy if she was
ever to be a good leader for her people. There were other covens out there in
the world, and the political interactions in the magical community made the
mortal world’s politics seem like commercials for cupcakes. “No, I need to
learn this. Please, keep going.”
“Perhaps
we will take an extended lunch today. Let’s meet back here in an hour.”
Melanie
sighed and nodded. She needed to get out of the dreary library. She gathered
her bag and put her books inside, thinking that she would study over lunch. At
the bottom of the bag, a bottle of unused pills rattled. The prescription
anti-anxiety meds messed with her ability to keep control of her magic, so
she’d stopped taking them weeks ago. She still couldn’t control the flood of
panic every time she thought a shadow was the noir reaching out to corrupt her.
Melanie
wouldn’t be attending a public school again, not until college. She was far too
dangerous. One stray argument with pretty much anyone, and in seconds there
could be an electrical storm of biblical proportions terrorizing all the
teenagers at her high school, setting off fire alarms, with follow-up videos
posted to the internet. The damnable internet.
A
video of Melanie, in the grips of the Ace of Hearts’s consciousness, while she
and her Vanguard tried to destroy it, had surfaced online. She couldn’t afford
to be recognized by anyone as the girl in that video. There would be far too
many questions, and it would endanger the coven. The last thing anyone wanted
was a conflict with the mortal humans. Melanie had also learned that there were
strict international laws about magic and its use in public. The kind of laws
that, when broken, resulted in death, dismemberment, or worse.
According
to several of her mother’s advisors, Lord Rossi’s mustache among them, she
wasn’t fit for public interaction because the risk that she would break one of
those international laws of magic. One fuzzy video of a girl with auburn hair
spewing lightning from her hands at a man who looked like a teacher, and she
was banned from public appearances beyond the rare outing to lunch. Not the
glamorous, paparazzi-filled life of the crown princess.
It was
a good thing she wasn’t in public very often. Her control on her magic was
still weak. She could snap at any second and voila! Twenty thousand volts of
raw witch anger, depression, or just downright irritation could electrocute the
nearest bystander. She could probably solve the world’s energy crisis if
someone hooked her to a set of jumper cables and a battery array. Until she got
control of her powers, she was on a strict “no use” ruling from her
mother.
“Rough
lesson?” Jack, her friend and a member of her Vanguard, asked as he caught
up to her. He’d been reading in an overlarge chair near the door. He was her
guard today. He and his twin sister, Luciana, attended public school, with him
taking classes Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and Luciana attending
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Melanie
sighed dramatically and hiked her bag higher on her shoulder. “Do the
words ‘ce n’est pas terrible’ cover it?”
Jack
didn’t laugh. It wasn’t that funny. With his six-foot-two frame, his shoulders
broad enough to make any body builder salivate, Jack walked with both a natural
swagger and like a man about to crack skulls. He kept pace at her side and
considered. When Jack considered, he took his time about it.
“Want
to get out of here for lunch?” he finally asked, his impossibly deep voice
rumbling in his chest.
“I
need to study,” Melanie said. “I need to know this stuff if—”
“Hey,”
he said. “You’re going to break something if you keep that up. Relax.
Let’s just find a place to eat. Someplace you like, that you won’t accidentally
burn down.” From their mind-to-mind connection, Melanie felt a flicker of
emotion from Jack: a dash of comfort, some humor, a hefty helping of happiness,
and the relaxed satisfaction of belonging. There was only one place that filled
that order: the Tattered Ear, where the local pack of Scottish-bred shape
shifters met. It was also where Ignatius Bruce, the pack’s alpha, and Melanie’s
soul mate, worked during the day.
It
didn’t take much prodding to get her to agree. “We’ll have to sneak
out,” she said.
“Let’s
go then,” Jack said. His huskiness intimidated the shape shifters enough
that Melanie soon learned if any of her Vanguard would be accepted into the
pack’s circle, it would be Jack. Also Ignatius co-owned the local pub with his
uncle, Fergusson. “Sneak out the back?”
“My
thoughts, exactly,” she said. Besides, it was finally warm enough to go
outside without a parka, so walking wouldn’t be miserable.
“Keep
a lid on the weather,” he said. “It’s a dead giveaway whenever you
are up to something.”
Melanie
felt her smile slip. “Right,” she said.
“Mel,”
Jack said, stopping, “I’m sorry.” He ran a hand through his short
brown hair. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
The
problem with having a Vanguard who was blood bound to her is that they could
sense her emotions and her thoughts through touch. Any one of them could
pinpoint her exact location as long as they were within a ten-mile radius of
each other. So when her depression hit her like a two-ton brick, he felt the
shockwave. Likewise, his remorse filtered through the bond, and the combination
was a power-punch of teenage angst, regret, and mutual suffering, that neither
of them wanted or needed more of.
“Don’t
worry about it,” she said, forcing her thoughts away from the one thing
she couldn’t think of, the one thing she kept a secret from everyone. The one
thing that terrified her as much as her out of control abilities did.
“Let’s just go.”
Jack
nodded and waited for her to go first, still feeling as sorry as a kicked
puppy. Which made it worse, because Jack was like a puppy. He just loved
everyone. When he was sad, it was like a double shot of negativity in her brew
of already-hard-to-swallow latte called life.
The Manor
was huge. Castle huge. It was also decorated with expensive furnishings that
were the remains of Melanie’s family history. Her ancestors were mostly
Italian, and the frescoes and tapestries were of spreading fields of olives and
grapes and European landscapes. It was all very idyllic, very much a lie
compared to the truth about the S’velare’s.
Under
normal circumstances they would shift
out, using their magical abilities to travel through the space. Lately,
Melanie’s magic had become a liability rather than a boon when jumping from
place to place. It was safer to walk. The last time she’d made the attempt with
another person, it had been in the depths of February, soon after Valentine’s
Day, and she and Luciana had ended up waist-deep in a frozen pond, halfway to
their destination. An emergency trip to the witch doctor had saved them both
from hypothermia. Still, Melanie hadn’t tried to shift since. She didn’t trust her control not to accidentally drop
her and Jack over a cliff, or worse, inside
it
.
“Let’s
go out the back this time. I’ll throw you over the wall or something.”
Melanie
had to smile at the joke. She sensed his humor in her mind, and it helped.
Her
smile vanished when they rounded the corner and her black-eyed brother, Owen,
stood in the exact middle of the corridor, waiting for them.
Jack
placed a protective hand on her shoulder, ready to draw her behind him. She
could feel his pulse through the contact, his shock and the sudden instinctive
fear that matched her own.
Owen’s
eyes were black as pitch, like an azri’s, but he wasn’t one. He was still a
mage, but he no longer had a soul. He’d been totally exposed to the raw
darkness of the noir, black magic. What looked out through his eyes was neither
human nor azri, but something in-between. Melanie felt stripped down to her
soul when he turned that black gaze on her, as if he could see every secret she
was keeping from the coven, her Vanguard, and her boyfriend. Worse still, Owen’s
soullessness was her fault.
She swallowed.
“Someone
is looking for you,” he said, tonelessly. “To give you a message.
Listen carefully to what he has to say. It will be very important.”
“Who
is looking for me?” Melanie asked.
Owen
frowned. “I don’t know. I just know that someone is looking for you. I
will cover your escape.” Then a slight tug of power filled the air and her
brother vanished, shifting as if it
were child’s play. He was only thirteen and such abilities should have been
beyond him, or at least more difficult. But without a soul, Owen was thirteen
going on infinity.
A cold
sweat broke out over Melanie’s body.
Let’s agree to not think about it,
Melanie thought to Jack.
He
nodded, his brown eyes still wide. I’m
going to have nightmares tonight
. I
wish he wouldn’t do that.
Melanie
didn’t respond. She always had nightmares. Ever since the Ace of Hearts had
come into her life, night was rife with terror of the thing she couldn’t let
her waking self think about. No one could know.
The
guards posted in the early spring garden were absent. Jack gave Melanie a leg
up near the back wall closest to the dark forest of silver aspens and spruce
spires before he pulled himself over and joined her on the other side.
Melanie
took a deep breath of the free air. When she first arrived in Park City, Utah,
she had hated it. At the time it had been under several feet of snow. Now, a
cool wind caused the trees to sway gently, and the spring shoots poking through
the waves of gray dead grass from last season, rustled under foot. Park City
was beautiful, and possessed a wildness all to itself that conjured images of
plaid button-downs and leather boots. Everything smelled perfect, no hint of
city pollution for miles in any direction. The trees and mountains parting its
streets dispelled any urban feel and replaced it with artsy communities of
athletic outdoorsmen. Park City itself was an elementally charged place. Even
without the magical inhabitants, it was a magical place tucked away from the
rest of the world.
The
walk into downtown wasn’t long. Soon the sounds of main street were close, the
rumble of cars and conversation of people interweaved with nature’s rhythms.
Jack,
his hands in his pockets, sighed. “I love this town, but you know,
sometimes I just wish we could leave.”
Melanie
smiled at him. She didn’t have to say that she did too.
How
many times had she wondered that? The shape shifters could do it. In fact,
Ignatius, Nate for short, had done it several times when he needed a break.
She’d never seen him leave before; he was always where she could find him, or
finding her when she wasn’t looking for him. But she knew he had escaped into
the wilderness more than once. At night, when he wasn’t allowed in the
ManorManor, he would sit at the edge of the trees and watch over her until the
moon rose high and heavy among the stars. Those were the nights when she slept
until morning. For him, it wasn’t anything to melt into the trees and disappear
from a world that was happy to forget about him.
Perhaps
that was the problem. The world was not ready to forget about Melanie S’velare,
Keeper of the Ace of Hearts, heir to the S’velare throne, the strongest witch
ever to live.
“I
think you’d end up living in a rockslide or something,” Melanie said as they
stepped from the forest onto concrete sidewalk.
“Probably,”
he said. “But that would be pretty cool. I bet I could.” Jack’s
reliquary was the King of Spades, meaning he was a mage gifted with power over
earth. Luciana’s reliquary was the Queen of Spades and she also had power over
earth, but over plants instead. Together they were a badass team of nearly
unstoppable power.
Melanie
smiled and adjusted the bag on her shoulder. It was a warm day, the Utah sun
already beating down, promising a dry and brutal summer ahead. She shielded her
eyes and looked up toward the tallest buildings, the two and three story
historic constructs comprising main street, a mass of artistry, talent, good
food, and outrageous resort pricing. The ski lifts were still active in April
due to the unusual snowfall this year. Snowboarders and skiers carried their
equipment in bikini’s and swim trunks. Here, the beach wasn’t a sandy stretch,
it was where the snow met the street. Lawn chairs were set out and people were
sunbathing.
This
year the resorts were doing well. Melanie’s nightmares messed with her emotions
enough that, for several weeks, nightly blizzards had coated the resort town in
some of the best powder Utah had experienced in years. The result was a longer
season and a boosted economy. So while she was damn good at destroying
buildings with accidental tornadoes, many members of the coven had complimented
her on the increased income her instability had brought them. Lord Rossi and
her mother were decidedly not pleased by this.
“What
are you looking at?” Jack asked, leaning down next to her and squinting in
the direction she was looking.
“I
think there’s someone standing on top of the theater.” With the sun behind
the person, it was hard to tell. It could be a movie gimmick, or something from
one of the new indie films coming to town. The wind picked up and the man’s
clothes shifted. His coat, too warm for the unseasonably warm weather, swept
out behind him like a cape and Melanie recognized him.
Gavin.

She
swallowed and lowered her hand and he disappeared in a sliver of black vapor.
Gavin was an azri, a soul eater. He was also her birth father.

Killer Pursuit Blitz and Excerpt

Killer Pursuit
by Jeff Gunhus
Genre: Adult Thriller
Release Date: January 10th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

When a high-society call girl is murdered in her Georgetown home, investigators find two cameras hidden in the walls of her bedroom. One has its memory erased, presumably by the murderer. The second is connected to the Internet through an encrypted connection…and no-one knows who’s on the other end.

Special Agent Allison McNeil is asked by beleaguered FBI Director Clarence Mason to run an off-the-record investigation of the murder. The most direct path to apprehending the killer is to find the videos, but with rumors that the victim’s client list may have included Mason’s political enemies, Allison worries about the director’s motives. As she starts her investigation, she quickly discovers that she’s not the only one pursuing the videos. In fact, the most aggressive person racing against her might be the murderer himself.

Book Excerpt:

The two members of the tactical squad approaching from the front reached the deck that wrapped around the front of the building. As they strode across it, the old wood floorboards groaned. The men froze. The seconds stretched out. Allison became suddenly aware of the hum of insects in the air around her. The dampness of her own skin. The sound of a bird calling in the distance. All of her senses were wired tight. An entire year of her life was wrapped up in the next few seconds. And if she’d got it wrong, Garret would have the ammo he’d been looking for to get her out of his unit once and for all. But she wasn’t worried about herself. What really bothered her was the chance that she had it right, that this was Kraw’s hideout, but that somehow they’d spooked him and he’d already slipped away. If that had happened, he’d be hundreds of miles away by tomorrow, scouting for his next victim as he traveled.

Movement in the cabin. Just a flutter. Like a bird trapped in a cage. Only her intuition told her it was more than a bird. It had been an arm. A human arm. Sam Kraw.

Based on the lack of movement from the tactical team, she realized no one else had seen it.

“I’ve got movement,” she whispered into her mic. “Window to the right of the front door. An arm.”

“I didn’t see anything,” Garret whispered.

Allison ignored him. The men around the cabin responded immediately, reorienting to the front door. Guns pointed at the window.

One of the men produced a miniram, a high impact, brute force breaching tool. Coordinating with his partner, he crouched next to the door while the other man readied a flash-bang grenade.

There was a pause, as if someone had pressed a button on a TV remote. Everyone was in place. The air seemed to still as if the world knew something was about to happen. Allison had her binoculars trained on the window where she’d seen the movement. If Kraw was inside, then the nightmare was almost over. She’d know in a few seconds whether that was the case or not.

But in that second, she saw the movement again.

Only this time, she knew something was wrong.

It was a man’s arm, she saw it clearly this time. But it was too stiff. The color was off. And, attached at the shoulder, she saw a coil of wire.

A mannequin arm on a spring.

Meant to make them think someone was inside.

It was a trap.

Artificial
by Jadah McCoy
Genre: NA Sci-fi
Release Date: April 4th 2016
Curiosity Quills Press

Summary from Goodreads:

She struggles to feel human.

In 2256, the only remnants of civilization on Earth’s first colonized planet, Kepler, are the plant-covered buildings and the nocturnal, genetically spliced bug-people nesting within them: the Cull. During the day, Syl leaves her home in the sewers beneath Elite City to scavenge for food, but at night the Cull come looking for a meal of their own. Syl thought gene splicing died with the Android War a century ago. She thought the bugs could be exterminated, Elite city rebuilt, and the population replenished. She’s wrong.

Whoever engineered the Cull isn’t done playing God. Syl is abducted and tortured in horrific experiments which result in her own DNA being spliced, slowly turning her into one of the bugs. Now she must find a cure and stop the person responsible before every remaining man, woman, and child on Kepler is transformed into the abomination they fear.

He struggles not to.

For Bastion, being an android in the sex industry isn’t so bad. Clubbing beneath the streets of New Elite by day and seducing the rich by night isn’t an altogether undesirable occupation. But every day a new android cadaver appears in the slum gutters, and each caved in metal skull and heap of mangled wires whittles away at him.

Glitches—androids with empathy—are being murdered, their models discontinued and strung up as a warning. Show emotion, you die. Good thing Bastion can keep a secret, or he would be the next body lining the street.

He can almost live with hiding his emotions. That is, until a girl shows up in the slums—a human girl, who claims she was an experiment. And in New Elite, being a human is even worse than being a Glitch. Now Bastion must help the girl escape before he becomes victim to his too-human emotions, one way or another.

My Review:

The Requiem Red is a wonderful historical fiction with a blend of darkness, mystery and romance. It’s a beautifully crafted Gothic Romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the world Chapman created and the characters she brought to life. I loved all the history she brought into this story and it clearly shows how much work she invested into this novel.  Her characters were, though odd, very captivating. The way Chapman reeled you in with their personalities and their stories was truly enchanting, especially Jane, patient 29! Jane is very interesting. She grew up in the insane asylum and had to be around all the horrors that happened there. Talk about freaky!

One thing I really loved was the musical element that Chapman brought to this novel. Jane sought refuge in her music, and I always enjoy books that try to incorporate music, art or dancing. I also really enjoyed the paranormal element to the story. The monster that roamed the halls and was taking Jane’s roommates in his attempt to get her was intense and scary and I loved this plot in the story!

As for the love stories, one of the love stories I thought was very adorable, but I feel like the other could have had a little more substance to it. Overall though I enjoyed both love stories, something I am often very picky about.

The ending was exciting and left on a cliff hanger and all I can say is I REALLY hope there’s a sequel so the questions I have can get answered.

Her characters, her plot, her world building, her ability to use history to set the stage, these are all strengths of Chapman. If you are into historical fiction, gothic romances, or horror stories, than you should definitely check out The Requiem Red.

Trial by Fire (Going Down in Flames #3)
by Chris Cannon

Release Date: April 4th 2016

Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

Bryn’s hopes for a peaceful new semester at school go up in smoke when someone tries to kill her—again. She’s not sure which is scarier, facing the radicals who want to sacrifice her for their cause, or her impending nightmare-of-a-Directorate-arranged marriage to her nemesis, Jaxon.

The one bright spot in her life is Valmont, her smoking-hot knight who is assigned to watch over her twenty-four hours a day. Is what she feels for him real, or just a side effect of the dragon-knight bond? At this point, stopping the impending civil war might be easier than figuring out her love life.

Trial by Fire cover

Excerpt:

Sunday, Bryn was happy to find herself at Suzette’s without Jaxon, watching Lillith and the other Blue women ooh and ahh over baby clothes. It made the normally cold and standoffish Blues seem far more human and likable.

And the pie was awesome. Bryn dug into her third piece of cherry pie, while her grandmother handed another gift to Lillith. It seemed her grandmother and Lillith had become friends, which was nice and terrifying at the same time. Nice because Lillith seemed like she needed friends, and terrifying because it implied to all present that they were working at cementing an alliance between the two families, aka the nightmare marriage between her and Jaxon.

Valmont stood on guard off to the side, with a polite smile plastered on his face.

“Isn’t this adorable?” Lillith held out a tiny tuxedo.

A tuxedo for a baby? Seriously? There was even a tiny bow tie. Poor kid. If Clint thought penguin suits were uncomfortable now, what would they be like for a baby?

Bryn leaned over and spoke to the woman next to her. “Can you really get a baby to wear one of those?”

“Of course.” She seemed shocked by the question.

No wonder Jaxon and his friends acted so stiff and formal. It had been drummed into them since birth.

Lillith unwrapped Bryn’s present next.

“Oh, Bryn, I love it.” She held out the silver rattle with Westgate engraved down the side so everyone could see.

Warmth bloomed in Bryn’s chest, somewhat filling the gaping hole left by her parents death. If she had to marry Jaxon, at least she’d gain Lillith as a mother-in-law. Oh, holy hell, are there drugs in the cherry pie? How’d I think that without flinching?

She smiled at Lillith. “I’m glad you like it.”

“You know, if things turn out like we expect, you could receive one of these one day.” Lillith beamed.

Bryn opened her mouth to object, vehemently and with great gusto and many obscenities, at the idea of giving birth to Jaxon’s children. It was bad enough she’d thought about marrying him, but having his kids deserved a whole other level of freaking out. Then she realized every woman in the room was staring at her. She swallowed her, over-my-dead-body response, and said, “It is a possibility.”

Her grandmother nodded, but Bryn didn’t know whether it was a response to how Bryn had handled the situation or if she was nodding in agreement. She ate two more pieces of pie to quell the instinct to run screaming from the room.

Bridges Burned (Going Down in Flames #2)

by Chris Cannon

Release Date: January 19th 2015

Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:

Since discovering she is a shape-shifting, fire-breathing dragon on her sixteenth birthday (surprise!), Bryn McKenna’s world has been thrown into chaos. Being a “crossbreed”—part Red dragon and part Blue—means Bryn will never fit in. Not with dragon society. Not with the archaic and controlling Directorate. And definitely not when she has striped hair and a not-so-popular affection for rule-breaking…

But sneaking around with her secret boyfriend, Zavien, gets a whole lot harder when he’s betrothed to someone else. Someone who isn’t a mixed breed and totally forbidden. And for an added complication, it turns out Bryn’s former archnemesis Jaxon Westgate isn’t quite the evil asshat she thought. Now she’s caught between her desire to fit in and a need to set things on fire. Literally.

Because if Bryn can’t adapt to the status quo…well, then maybe it’s time for her to change it.

EXCERPT:

“I can’t believe you roped us into this stupid cruise,” Sarah said in a tone of voice that clearly carried her frustration with parents who never appreciated her very important social calendar. She stood in the middle of her parents’ bedroom with her hands on her hips, chin stuck out for emphasis.

“Sarah, we don’t want to hear another word about this. You’re going, and that’s final. Now go pack your bag.” Sarah’s father turned his back on her to walk into his large bedroom closet. She lost sight of him as he turned the corner. The closet, trimmed entirely in dark cedar, was larger than many of her friends’ bedrooms.

Sarah’s mom stepped over and took Sarah’s hands in hers. “I’m sorry, sweetie, but your father is right. We’re all going, and you can’t stay behind. It’s important for your dad’s business that we all be there. But don’t look so glum – it’s going to be fun!”

Sarah knew her mother was trying to sell her on the idea by using her especially chipper, upbeat voice. The annoying one. She rolled her eyes and pulled her hands away. “Oh, please. Like being stuck out in the middle of the ocean with you guys and those loser Buckley kids could ever possibly be fun. Not in a million years, Mom. I’m not in the damn chess club, you know.” The thought of being on a cruise with the two Buckley nerds was too much. Sarah had a boyfriend and a convertible, neither of which was going on this cruise. What was so difficult for her parents to understand?

Sarah’s mom sighed and walked over to the dresser without responding, putting her fingers up to her temples to massage them. Confrontation wasn’t her strong suit, and Sarah used this to her advantage as often as possible.

Sarah’s father, on the other hand, wasn’t one bit shy about going head-to-head. He stepped out of the closet carrying an armload of things for his suitcase. Without even sparing her a glance he said, “Don’t talk to your mother that way, Sarah. Just go pack.”

“But … ”

“Not another word, or you’re going to be very sorry.” He caught her eye, giving her one of his famous warning looks.

Sarah knew what that meant. Either he was going to take away the keys to her car and turn her into a social castaway or forbid her from seeing her boyfriend Barry.

“Fine!”

She turned and stormed from the room in a huff. She tried to stomp her feet for emphasis, but they didn’t make a sound on the heavily padded, ultra thick carpeting. It was very unsatisfying.

On her way down the hall she stopped off at her twin brother’s room and leaned in the doorway. Her eyes scanned the sports posters on the wall, the thirty or so perfectly arranged trophies on the shelves, and the small modern metal and glass desk with a computer sitting on it. He was always so neat with his stuff. “Kev, can you believe this crap? It’s total B.S., right?”

Sarah’s brother Kevin was packing a duffle bag he used for rugby. She watched him move back and forth, grabbing things from different places. He always looked so at ease with himself. His muscled arms and back showed how hard he worked out so he could excel at his favorite sport. He was like most rugby players – he laughed at football players because they had to wear pads and helmets. Rugby players had to worry every game about broken bones and ears being bitten off, or so he said.

He continued to open drawers, pulling out wads of clothes and shoving them into his bag as he responded. “Whatever. I’m gonna go to the all-you-can-eat buffets and put them out of business. Then I’m gonna drink beer until I puke. Then we come home. No big deal.” He didn’t bother looking up.

Sarah snorted in disgust, a look on her face as if she’d smelled something bad. “Is that all you ever worry about? Food and beer?”

“What else is there to worry about?” he asked, dead serious.

“What about Gretchen? She’s not going to be there.”

“But there will be other girls, and Gretchen isn’t the only fish in the sea.” He sniggered at his own poor cruise joke.

“I’ll bet she wouldn’t be so thrilled to hear you say that.”

He looked up at his sister to fix her with his threatening look. “She’s not going to hear anyone say that, or else.”

He sounded just like their dad. Sarah was sick of being threatened, but she knew that Kevin meant either he would share one of her secrets or he’d tackle her and mess up her hair – totally not worth it.

Gretchen probably had no clue that her brother was just using her like he did all the girls before her. The only thing he really cared about was rugby – and food and beer, of course. When he went to rugby parties, there was always beer there, provided courtesy of the older alumni of the team who still came to watch matches and party afterwards.

Sarah continued, “Whatever. I’m not going on this cruise and pretending like I’m having fun. We’re gonna be stuck with those Buckley idiots the entire time, I just know it.”

She paused in her ranting to carefully admire her latest manicure. Her nails were a rosy pink with white tips – flawless. Her skin was already very carefully bronzed to match her summer outfits. Her hair was expertly highlighted. All of it was going to be wasted on this stupid business cruise.

Kevin paused in his packing to spare her a glance. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll ditch ‘em as soon as Mom and Dad aren’t around, and I’ll make sure they keep it to themselves and don’t rat us out.”

Sarah stood up straight and took a step into the bedroom. “Ooh, are you going to threaten them? That should be entertaining.”

“No, I’m not going to threaten the twerp or his sister. I’m just going to explain to them that they’ll have much more fun doing things with other kids more their speed.” He stopped, pointing a finger at his sister. “And don’t take another step into my room, or I’m gonna tackle your scrawny butt and mess up your hair.”

She gingerly stepped back, knowing her brother wasn’t kidding. Then she continued, “Awesome. That’s one issue out of the way, at least.” Sarah was picturing Jonathan and Candace Buckley, who she saw from time to time at school in the hallways or at lunch. What is it with those people who can’t even look in the mirror and see what they’re wearing, anyway? she thought to herself.

“Consider it done.” Kevin finished packing his duffle bag, zipped it up with one quick, practiced motion, and threw it over his shoulder.

“Sounds like a plan,” said Sarah, holding her hand up for a high five as he came towards the door.

Their hands met with a loud crack. “I’m outta here. Tell Mom I’ll be back before four.”

“Tell her yourself. I have to pack for this disaster.” She pushed off the doorframe, stepped around him, and went into her room across the hall.
“You’re a serious pain in the ass, you know that?” he yelled after her, shutting his door behind him.

She didn’t bother to answer, other than to slam the door in his face as he walked by. She could hear him muttering behind the door, walking down the hallway towards the stairs.

She reached under her bed, pulled out her Louis Vuitton suitcase and carry-on make up case and put them on the bed. She turned towards her huge closet, throwing open the doors. So, what does a girl wear on a cruise from hell? As her eyes landed on the short, black skirt her aunt had bought for her on their last shopping spree, an evil glint came into her eye. Well, this little number for starters…

Her parents were going to be sorry they forced her to go on this stupid trip. She laughed out loud thinking about her revenge.

Escape from the Past I 600x900 pixels

Excerpt

I leaned forward because all of a sudden my chest was killing me.

I was stuck in a truck-sized vise, my ribs squeezing together,

body compressing. My lungs throbbed and I couldn’t breathe,

not even a little. My arms and legs felt numb. Do something, I

thought. I pushed myself to stand. Something is wrong with the

game, stop the game, my mind urged. But I couldn’t. Lights

exploded behind my eyelids and I had to pay every shred of

attention to the task of breathing.

It occurred to me that I was having a heart attack.

My mother’s face flashed by. I wanted to shout for her, but my

lungs had quit for good, my tongue a rigid piece of meat. She’d

find me in the morning dead on the carpet. My sight turned

foggy then black. I was passing out. I sucked frantically and

drew in a bit of air. Slowly with each breath the crushing

heaviness disappeared.

Blinking away the haze, I wiped my sweaty forehead. I

should make an appointment with the family doctor.

Something moved ahead. There at the edge of a clearing

cowered the man in rags holding his right elbow. He trembled

and now that I was closer, I saw blood dripping from his wrist.

The three riders had surrounded him, their blades pointing

toward the man’s neck. One rider dismounted, his face shadowed

by a half helmet and curled brownish beard, his hands covered

by steel gauntlets like lizard scales. The other two sat motionless,

waiting. I tried to get a better view of what the horsemen were

doing when I looked down.

And froze.

I stood on the root of an oak tree. Surely I imagined things.

But those were definitely my Nikes I’d forgotten to take off when

I returned home. I moved my foot. Leaves crackled. A twig

snapped. Something terrible had happened, something I couldn’t

wrap my mind around. I blinked and looked to my right. Trees

and undergrowth were losing themselves in the gloom. I remembered

the mouse in my right hand, but when I lifted my arm, my

fingers came up empty—except for the smear of something sticky

on my palm. I was bleeding.

Wait.

The bush next to me was covered in blood. Not mine, I

realized with relief. Disgusted I wiped my shaking hands with a

fistful of leaves and turned to look behind me. The woods

stretched into darkness—shadows within shadows nearly black.

My room was gone.
